The White Mountain National Forest was established in 1918 as part of the 1911 Week’s Act. You can explore most of the 800,000 acres of the White Mountain National Forest within New Hampshire’s borders. Hike over 48 4,000 footers as part of the 1200 miles of hiking trails, enjoy natural waterfalls, explore rock formations and 6 designated wilderness areas that are used solely for recreation and scientific purposes. The White Mountain National Forest is one of the most visited outdoor recreation sites east of the Mississippi. Even though US History is young in comparison to the other world history the geographical history of the White Mountains goes back 124 million years.

Mount Washington stands majestically over the 27 towns that call the Mount Washington Valley home. At 6,288’ tall, this mountain is the tallest peak in New England. It is also hometo the legendary Mount Washington Observatory, nationally revered for maintaining a year-round mountaintop weather station, conducting cutting edge research and educational programs. It is famous for the endless adventure you can enjoy on your vacation. Take on the mountain by hiking, driving, cycling, motorcycling, taking a train and snowshoeing up and skiing down; Mount Washington has even seen someone take a unicycle up! With all the various ways to get to the top, one thing is for sure, the view will always be worth it! The first European to mention the mountain was Giovanni da Verrazzano, viewing it from the Atlantic Ocean in 1524.

• Visit the Red Stone Quarry for a history lesson in bygone industries of the valley.
• Follow the spectacular 100 mile White Mountain loop taking you through the best of everything the White Mountains have to offer. Enjoy seven covered bridges, 32 scenic overlooks, historical sites, roadside waterfalls and quaint New England villages.
• Follow the Kancamagus Highway, almost 35 miles of extraordinarily beautiful scenery. It climbs to about 3,000 feet with numerous overlooks and views, historic sites, trails, waterfalls, rivers; a spectacular national scenic byway.
Follow the WALT! The Weeks Act Legacy Trail (WALT) is a new, self-guided driving tour of the White Mountains using multimedia and mobile technology. The tour spans 100-miles and stops at 40 signature White Mountain destinations. Destinations are categorized by eight themes: Art and Literature, Conservation History, Ecology and Nature, History and Cultural Heritage, Kids and Families, Recreation, Scenery and Photographic Opportunity, and Water. Tour guides to help travelers along the way include an audio tour, a print tour, an online virtual tour and a mobile tour customized for smart phones. All tour guides are located at weekslegacy.org.
RIVER FUNSuggested Experiences:
• Participate in rver excursions, white water rafting and team building activities on the water.
• Visit the Saco Ranger’s station on the Kancamagus Highway.

Saco River: Twisting and turning throughout the Mount Washington Valley, this river makes its journey from Saco Lake in Crawford Notch, covering a little over 1,000 square miles it eventually empties out into the Atlantic Ocean.Androscoggin River: The Androscoggin begins in Errol, New Hampshire where the Magalloway River joins the outlet of Umbagog Lake. The river flows generally south but with numerous bends past the towns of Errol and Milan and the city of Berlin before turning east at the town of Gorham, New Hampshire, to cut across the northern end of the White Mountains and enter Maine.
