Bareback Riding Five time qualifier, Kaycee Feild dominated at the WNFR and won back to back World Championships with $286,850 season earnings. The Payson, UT, bareback rider won the title by more than $56,000 over second place. Feild joins an elite few to win back to back championships, including his father, Lewis, in 85-86 and the most recent, Bobby Mote, in 2009-2010. He joined seven others in making a qualified ride on all ten horses. Kaycee placed in the money in eight rounds, followed by Bobby Mote placing in the money in seven rounds. Round 1 was won by eight time qualifier, Wes Stevenson, with an 87 point ride on J Bar J’s Freckled Doll. “I’m pretty pumped - it’s an important win,” Stevenson said. “But a guy needs to keep doing good.” Round 2 was shared by three time World Champion, Will Lowe and five time qualifier, Kaycee Feild. “Everyone wants to be the rankest person out there,” said Lowe of his 86.5 point ride on Classic Pro Rodeo’s Bi Polar. “Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t”. Feild’s had this to say after his ride on Carr Pro Rodeo’s Riverboat Annie, “I was a little rusty last night. I redeemed myself tonight. I loosened up and had fun.” Round 3 was won by Will Lowe, for a second night in a row, with an 88 point ride on Flying U Rodeo’s Comanchero. “It’s going to be a race to the end,” said Lowe. “You just go day by day.” Round 4 was another for Kaycee Feild with an 87 point ride on Classic Pro Rodeo’s Kattle Katie. Round 5 was won by Casey Colletti. He was the first rider out and posted an 88.5 on Classic Pro Rodeo’s Scarlet’s Web. “I had her at Cheyenne Frontier Days in the short round and did real good,” Colletti said. Round 6 was also won by the first rider out. Winn Ratliff rode Kesler Rodeo’s Star Burst for a score of 83.5. “It’s just an awesome feeling to have the opportunity to come here and then win the sixth round,” said Ratliff. Round 7 was won with an 85 point ride by Caleb Bennett aboard Frontier Rodeo’s Times Up. “I’m definitely

happy and humbled,” replied Bennett. “There are guys who still haven’t placed yet.” Round 8 was another for Kaycee Feild riding Kate’s Hot Sister of Harry Vold Rodeo. Feild’s third time in first place at this years NFR. “I just need to keep it up and get on each horse with a mindset of no mistakes and concentrate on perfect rides,” Feild said. “I’m happy with the way everything is turning out.” Round 9 was won by Steven Peebles, four time NFR qualifier, in spite of his injured hip. He scored an 84.5 on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Vitalix Hell’s Fire Hostage. Peebles said, “I’ve been trying not to overdo it and look at the NFR as another rodeo, but one that has ten head of horses to get on.” Round 10 went to JR Vezain with an 86.5 point ride on top of Top Flight from Lancaster & Pickett

Pro Rodeo.

BULL RIDING

Rookie Cody Teel, came out on top of the bull riding by $1056 over JW Harris. Teel’s sixth place finish in the average is what pushed him out in front. The Kountze, TX, bull rider became the youngest world champion bull rider, at 20 years, 6 months old, since Bill Kornell won the title in 1963 as a 19 year old rookie. The bulls had a 72% buck-off rate and only two riders rode to the eight seconds five out of ten rounds, equaling an NFR low. There were only two qualified rides all finals that didn’t earn a check and only two rounds that paid out to all six places. Nine of the fifteen bull riders showed up on the Justin Sports Medicine injury report during the finals. Round 1 went to JW Harris, with a 90.5 ride on Four Star Rodeo’s Stink Eye. For the first time all season, Harris took the lead over Cody Teel. “Any time you can ride for 90, it’s special,” replied Harris. “I don’t care if you’re at a little $1,000-added rodeo or here at the NFR.” Round 2 was won by Cody Whtney. He scored 89 points on a ride from Wild Card Rodeo’s The Grinch. “I’m focused on riding bulls and in ten days they’ll tell us who wins what, that’s just the way I am looking at it,” said Whitney. Round 3 saw Cody Teel regain his lead in the world standings. He scored an 88 point ride on Kesler Rodeo’s Whiskey Jack. Teel said, “I feel great about what I’ve been able to do so far, but i’m staying level headed about it.” Round 4 was won by injured Clayton Savage, with a 78.5 point score on El Captain from Rafter H Rodeo Livestock. Savage suffered a perineum contusion in the third round. “I do hurt pretty good, but man, going to pick up that buckle is going to cure about all of it,” Savage said. “I just had to block out the pain and I’m ready to ride some more.”

Round 5 went to injured Seth Glause. Glause scored 87.5 points on Growney Brother Rodeo’s Canadian Tuxedo. In round 2, he suffered a broken nose. “I guess getting popped in the face must’ve woke me up a bit,” said Seth. “The broken nose hasn’t really affected me, and putting on a helmet was a little different the first time, but now I’m just here to do my job and it doesn’t matter what’s on my head.” JW Harris regained the world standings lead by $7,189 over Cody teel. Round 6 went to rookie Beau Schroeder, atop Frontier Rodeo’s Feeling So Fly, with a score of 89. “I’m sure there’s a party and everybody is excited right now,” the China, TX, cowboy said. “It’s a town of about 1,400 people and there’s only one stoplight, so if you blink, you’ll miss it.” With his 79.5 ride in the tenth round, Beau posted 423 on five head, to win the average. Round 7 was won by Brett Stall with an 88.5 point ride on Cowboy Compactor from Frontier Rodeo. “It takes all the pressure off my shoulders; my dream has come true and my goal was to win a round this year at the Finals, and I did it,” Stall said. “It sets me

up for my next set of goals.” Round 8 went to reigning World Champion Shane Proctor. Proctor scored 83.5 points on Lancaster & Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Cowboy Coffee. “I expect to win every time and that made me ride tight here at the beginning,” Proctor said. “I’m starting to loosen up now.” Clayton Savage was the only other bull rider to make the whistle. JW Harris leads the world with just under $2,500, however, Cody Teel is ahead in the average. Round 9 had only one bull rider ride for eight seconds. Trevor Kastner rode for an 84.5 on Bailey Hou from Mo Betta Rodeo. Leaving Kastner with over $40,000 in ground money. “I think the only person happier than me is my mom,” said Kastner. Round 10 went to Shane Proctor, with an 86.5 point ride on Squawk Box from Wild Card Rodeo. Cody Teel was crowned the World Champion by $1056 over JW Harris. “This is what you work all year to do and I think right now that it doesn’t matter how you do it, as long as you get the job done,” Teel said. “It’s my first gold buckle and I just couldn’t stop staring at it when they handed it to me.”

2012 National Finals Rodeo continued

Saddle bronc riding Jesse Wright from Milford, UT, won the world title by just over $796, over Cody DeMoss. “This is better than what I ever thought it would feel like,” said Wright. “I didn’t have that great of a Finals, but to come down to the end of it and to ride my horses and win the world title, without being high up in the average, feels outstanding.” Cody DeMoss won the average with a 798.5, being the only rider to cover all of his horses.

Round 1 got started off with a win for the two time World Champion, Taos Muncy. He scored 87 points on Fire Lane from Andrews Rodeo. “After the first two jumps, he stayed underneath himself and was really an awesome horse that I’d like to get on everyday,” said reigning World Champ, Muncy. “I love the atmosphere here and the way the fans are; it’s something that you can’t explain and it’s just unreal.” Round 2 was split by Wade Sundell and Jake Wright. They each scored 84.5 points for the round win. “I’m loving this and I can’t wait for tomorrow,” said Jake Wright. “I’ve always wanted to come here and do really good and it’s come true.” Wade Sundell commented, “I feel good and I’m ready to rock and roll. The knee feels awesome and I think it’s where I need it to be.” Round 3 set a record, with Jesse and Jake Wright becoming the first twins to share a round victory in NFR history. “I wouldn’t want to split a round with anybody else,” said Jesse. Tonight was outstanding for both of us.” Jake said, “Last night I said that I’d split first all night long as long as it was with good company and my brothers. But money is the last thing on my mind right now because I’m just having a great time being here

and sharing with my brothers and soaking it in.” Round 4 was to go to Jesse Wright with the NFR’s first 90 point saddle bronc ride. Wright rode for 90 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Wild Bill. This boosted Wright’s world standings lead, now more than $30,000 over Wade Sundell. “It just took me falling in the dirt in round 2 for me to remember why I’m here and what I’m doing,” Wright said. “Now I’m just back to hav-ing some fun and riding broncs with my buddies.” Round 5 had a tough pen of horses, with only three of the fifteen making a qualified ride. Rookie Cole Elshere put up an 83 point score on Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic Fringe to win the round. “He was the horse I wanted because I knew I could ride him and he fit my style,” Cole said. “It worked out and I’ve been lucky to place in a few rounds before tonight, but win-ning a round was my goal in my first NFR.” Round 6 split with 84 points going to Wade Sundell and Taos Muncy. Sundell rode Classic Pro Rodeo’s Lori Darlin and Muncy rode Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s Flaming Desire. “This was a big deal tonight, because last night I stubbed my toe and missed an opportunity,” said Wade. In this round, Cody DeMoss became the only cowboy to ride all of his horses. Round 7 went to Jesse Wright with a score of 84 on Gold Coast of Classic Pro Rodeo. “I know there is a lot on the line and the pressure is there,” Wright said. “It hangs over my head a little bit. But what can I do about it? If I don’t ride good, it won’t matter. I really try not to think about it because if you let that stuff bother you, it’ll hurt you.” Round 8 went to rookie Tyrell Smith, with an 84 point ride on Cool Runnings from Carr Pro Rodeo. “At first I was a little jittery to be at my first NFR, and I put some pressure on myself that I should have more money than I do, or be higher up in the standings,” replied Smith. “I started to fall back in my own routine and it’s been going well.” Round 9 was won by reigning World Champion, Taos Muncy. Muncy spurred Wayne Vold Rodeo’s Awesome to an 84 point ride to win the round. At this point, it could be any one of the top three riders that win the buckle. “They all ride real good and it’s going to come down to that last horse,” said Muncy, of the world champion saddle bronc race. “To me, all those guys deserve a buckle.” Round 10 was all Cody DeMoss. He won the round with an 86 point ride on Painted Feather from Smith, Harper & Morgan Rodeo and was the only rider to cover all ten horses, leaving him the average winner.

Tracye’s Bucking Report

Paiden Gillis.....giving up roping for riding

by Tracye Dethero

Paiden Gillis of Woodland was barely six months old when he started riding in the saddle with his mom. By the time he turned two, he started roping and then began to work on the family’s ranch as he got older. Gillis started competing in rodeos at the age of eleven. When he got into high school, he competed for California High School Rodeo Association District Three calf roping and team roping. Gillis made the trip to the California State Finals Rodeo for high school four years in a row and the High School Challenge Rodeo twice. Challenge is a rodeo that the top three cowboys and cowgirls in each district go to mid season to compete with cowboys and cowgirls from other districts. It is basically a preview to the competition at the state high school level. After graduating from high school, Gillis continued on to college in Quincy, CA. He attended Feather River College, and studied Agriculture Business and competed on the college rodeo team. He was coached by Jesse Segura and NFR qualifier, Billy Bugenig. Gillis got on his first saddle bronc horse while attending Feather River College and has never looked back. He gave up calf and team

roping for saddle bronc riding. At the end of the school year, Gillis went to Brentwood, CA, to train with John Holman of John Holman Performance Horses, and learned everything he could about riding broncs. Gillis has been riding professionally for the past two years. To help give back what he was given by Holman and his training techniques, he now goes to clinics in Brentwood and helps to teach other riders the basics and more advanced aspects of riding saddle bronc horses. The clinics consist of approximately five to fifteen cowboys. “One thing John taught me was to be consistent. Consistency is a key part of being a saddle bronc rider,” said Gillis. “I am able to ride 75 to 80 percent of the broncs that I get on.”As they say, the rest is history…… Since embarking on his adventure of riding saddle bronc horses, Gilles has been competing in the NPRA (Northern Professional Rodeo Association) and the CCPRA (California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association), along with open rodeos. Currently, Gillis is riding in 40 to 50 rodeos per year. Gillis qualified for this years CCPRA Finals in the saddle bronc in 10th place, but had to

Page 9: Just Bucking News Volume 2

Just Bucking News 9

med out of the finals due to a broken wrist and separated shoulder. Healing needed to be his first priority. “I was pretty bummed that I couldn’t ride at the finals, but I knew that if I did, it would just become worse in the end,” said Gillis. Between now and the start of the 2013 season, Gillis plans to spend as much time as he can in the practice pen so that he can continue making each ride count. His favorite part of saddle bronc riding is marking out his horse as it comes out of the bucking chute, along with getting a call to ride, even if he is unable to. “It really gets your heart racing when you are marking out your horse,” said Gillis. “It is exciting.” For Gillis, his best advice for others that want to ride saddle bronc horses is to find someone that will teach you the correct fundamentals, and learn slowly. Learning at a slow pace will help you learn to ride better and you will be able to cut out a few of the harder lessons by getting hurt as often. As soon as you form a bad habit, it needs to be broken for your own safety. Take good care of your rigging because that is one of the most important tools that you have, and to always be consistent in what you are working on. Riding saddle bronc is a tough sport.

Gillis looks forward to each and every ride, spending time with his friends behind the bucking chute, getting on great horses, and everything that goes along with being able to rodeo. When he is not competing, Gillis works on the family ranch along with shoeing horses. At some point, he would like to start his own company building furniture, which is something he has always enjoyed. Gillis also enjoys going out branding and training horses. Before attending Feather River College, Gillis was home schooled so that he could rodeo and work in the fields. He started working when he was 15 years old out in the fields and hasn’t stopped enjoying what he does.

“My ultimate goal is to make something of myself in the sport. If I don’t make it, I can always say that I tried,” said Gillis. “It will make a great story and I am carrying on the family tradition of professional rodeo.” Paiden Gillis

Over the past decade, there have been countless story lines associated with the International Finals Rodeo, but year-in and year-out, the most consistent story has been Shawn Minor. It hasn’t been a question of will Shawn Minor win a world title, the question has always been how many world titles will he win.

Minor hopes the answer will be three, as he headlines the collection of the finest contestants in the International Professional Rodeo Association at IFR 43, set for Jan. 18-20, in Oklahoma City. The top 15 contestants in each event will compete at the championship event. Minor first qualified for the IFR after a stellar 2003 season that was capped by an IPRA world bareback riding title. While the all-around buckle went to Cord McCoy that year, there has only been one other occasion when Minor didn’t win the all

around; Erik Wolford claimed it in 2005. The odds are pretty good that the Ohio cowboy will add to his string of all-around championships, as he heads into IFR 43 with a little more than a $7,000 lead over No. 2 Justin Thigpen, a timed-event dynamo who has won world championships in both tie-down roping and steer wrestling, but thanks to Minor, an all-around title has evaded him so far. While Minor will have to work to earn the title in the all-around race, he has a virtual lock on the bareback riding. With a $14,000 advantage over No. 2 Joshua Crager, the defending IPRA world champion and IFR average winner, it will be a race for second place among Crager, D.V. Fennell and Joe Courville, who have less than $2,000 separating them. Fennell has multiple IFR and NFR qualifications to his credit, while Minor (2003-06, 08-09), Crager (2010-11) and No. 15 Billy Griffin (2007) each have IPRA world bareback riding titles on their resumes. Other bareback riders to watch include past IFR qualifiers Mark Kreder Jr., Blake Arp, Danian Nutt and Luiz Moreira. Four IPRA rookies made the top 15 this year: Zaine Seales, Pier-Anthony Boudreaux, Cody Parker and Philippe Harvey.

The saddle bronc race is more open, with Minor, the world champion in 2007, 2009-10, a distant third and almost out of contention. The race will likely be between 2008 world champion Sean Prater and defending world champion Eddie Parlier separated by less than $2,000. Parlier was also the average champion at IFR 42. A rare event with no IPRA rookies qualifying for the finals, there is plenty of experience in this year’s field. Look for IFR veterans like Tyler West, Will Abshure, Luc Clothier, Austin Joseph, Benoit Bouchard, Rodney Weese, Buck Johnson and Shane Hand to make some noise. The bull riding championship race will boil down to two competitors. Joshua Baker, who lost out to Shane Rickly a year ago by a mere $800, has about a $5,000 lead over No. 2 Luke Haught. Haught has already made his presence known in past seasons in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, but is finishing his rookie year in the IPRA. Rickly, also a talented team roper, is at a distant third. In a field heavily-laden with IPRA rookies, Haught, Jay Miller, Nicholas Brien, Winston Quesenberry and Peyton Stewart will each make their first IFR appearances. Several past qualifiers also return, including Jake Anderson, Rowdy Rice, Eric Isabelle, Dustin McMullen and Ian Charman.

*** By this time, we all know who the PRCA’s world champions are. Congratulations to bareback rider Kaycee Feild, saddle bronc rider Jesse Wright and bull rider Cody Teel for their achievements. While Feild won his second consecutive title fairly decisively, the other two had much narrower margins, making the races all the more exciting. But as happy as everyone was for Wright, you can’t help but feel for No. 2 saddle bronc rider Cody DeMoss, who has yet to win a world championship, but finished second five times now.

*** We’ve already addressed that Shawn Minor and other roughstock cowboys have consistently claimed the IPRA’s all-around championship, but in the PRCA, it has been Trevor Brazile and other timed event cowboys. Ty Murray was the last person to win the all-around eight seconds at a time, when he did it for the seventh time in 1998. Since then, Fred Whitfield, Joe Beaver, Cody Ohl and Ryan Jarrett have each had it a year with Brazile winning it on every other occasion. But it is at least worth noting that three of the top five of 2012 were roughstock guys. Bobby Mote (who actually works both ends of the arena), Steven Dent and Seth Glause came in second, third and fifth, respectively.

*** This is only the second issue of JustBuckingNews, and I’m already suspicious that there might be a jinx associated with what I write. Of the three that I wrote about last month, only Wade Sundell made it to the pay window at the Wrangler NFR. Now I’m not superstitious. I was merely sad that good guys like Jared Keylon and Tate Stratton got shut out. I do find consolation in the fact that all three subjects were good interviews and had intelligent things to say, so hopefully I was able to translate that into some good reading. Thanks for reading. I’ll admit I had experienced a little burnout, but after laying out a few months, I’m enjoying writing about rodeo again.

Nashville Recording Artist

Buck Ford by Tracye Dethero

Vacaville, CA, native, Buck Ford, has lived his life listening to country music starting at a very young age as his parents had it playing in the house all the time. Ford started singing at home and playing the guitar when he was 18 years old. He began singing professionally approximately three years ago. Buck also raced motocross for over a decade. He would take his guitar out on the road with him and would ‘pick away’ at his guitar to pass the time as he and his father, who was also his coach, would travel to the next race. After racing for 12 years and a full ride endorsement with a Honda team through the West Coast Super Cross Series in 2009, Ford put

his riding career on hold to pursue his country music dreams. “After racing for 12 years, it hit me, that making country music is the lifestyle that I wanted to pursue,” said Ford. “My heart was more into music than motocross. It was my time to follow my dreams. I had to choose between the two to be successful in the business. Racing motocross was like going to boot camp to prepare for a career in the country music industry.” Ford did just that, and has recently released his third album in June of 2012, titled ‘Country Never Goes Outta Style.’ Prior to his recently released album in 2012, were albums titled, ‘For Now,’ and ‘Guitar and Gasoline.’ All of his albums include self written songs, some that were written or pitched to him by other artists and songs that are traditional country. ‘Guitar and Gasoline’ was released in 2009, with his CD ‘For Now,’ coming out in 2010. Ford enjoys the more traditional forms of country music and looks towards country legends such as George Strait, Keith Whitley, Merle Haggard, and George Jones to name a few. Buck and his Pure Country Band pride themselves on bringing back the old sound and feel of country music with tunes such as the title track, ‘Country Never Goes Outta Style’, and songs; ‘I Miss My Truck’, ‘No Place For A 17 Year Old’ and ‘Country Thing’. Ford’s Pure Country Band has six members, all of whom enjoy each and every moment of playing with Buck Ford and being out on the road with him. “I love singing traditional country and am trying to keep all of my music deep within those roots,” said Ford. “Who doesn’t like George Strait and other traditional country music artists?” Ford can be found at any time, singing at different venues around the United States; including clubs, rodeos, fairs, festivals, private venues, weddings and more. Currently, Ford is playing more venues on the West Coast and southern California. Most recently, in November of 2012, he took a month off from performing to make a trip to Nashville to spend time writing with other artists and playing at clubs, making new connections to help build his budding career as

a country music artist. Ford is planning to make the move back to Nashville in January. “I learned from motocross that if you want something really bad, you have to put your heart and soul 100% into that to fully fulfill your goal. I believe that being a part of the sport taught me the real value of hard work. I hold my experiences in motocross responsible for my hard work ethic I put into my music today. I am glad that I was a part of the sport, because it has helped me know how to overcome hard situations and obstacles, not only in the sport of motocross, but in life,” said Ford. “All the years and countless hours training, racing, broken bones, falling down, getting back up, and the ups and downs of it all helped me in this music world very much along the way. I’ve been blessed to have family support and determination behind me, pushing me to the limit to achieve my goals as well.” Ford has played for audiences of all ages and enjoys sharing his talent with everyone around him. He has the pleasure of opening for many big name artists such as Darryl Singletary, Jason Michael Carroll, Steve Azar, Easton Corbin, John Michael Montgomery, Clint Black, Dustin Lynch, and most recently, Mark Chesnutt. At

the 100 Years of Aviation celebration, Ford performed for approximately 80,000. Held at the North Island Navel Aviation Station in Coronado, CA. this was Ford’s largest audience, so far. To Ford, all of his fans are like family and he greets them with hugs or a casual wave if he is up on stage performing. He is an amazing down to earth young man who is respectful and up beat to everyone he comes in contact with. He includes good morals and values in his songs. I was fortunate to be able to meet Buck for the first time at the Jukebox Music Festival in Anderson, CA, in July. I started shooting photos and talking with him more about his music approximately two months after that. His songs stick in your head, and when he performs a song that has been recorded by another artist, he makes it his own, and each time you think of or hear the song, you think in your head, “Wow, there is Buck’s song,” and you

can hear his voice rather than someone else singing the song. Buck was born and raised in the small town of Vacaville, CA, and performs for his friends, family and others in the community every chance he gets. “The people of Vacaville have been very supportive of my career. They include me in all of the community celebrations. I am proud to have been born and raised here,” said Ford. “I have also been very blessed by my family, whom have always supported me in all of my endeavors and helped me to follow my dreams.” If you would like to learn more about Buck Ford and his music, you can follow him on the following websites. www.buckford.com, and facebook. His albums are also available at www.itunes.com and www.cdbaby.com.

Rodeo Pick-Up Riders - GHOSTS OF THE ARENA! By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Steve_Benedict]Steve Benedict When was the last time you noticed the pick-up men at a rodeo? If they just seem to blend into the arena background, they’re doing an excellent job. In all the excitement of rodeo’s rough stock events, the job of these ghosts of the arena might mean the difference between life and death for the cowboys. However, you’d never know it to watch the action. The rough stock rider has everyone’s attention for 8 seconds. However, when the ride is over, getting the cowboy out of the arena alive and unhurt literally rides on the broad shoulders of the pick-up men. The crowd doesn’t notice them, but you can bet your boots that the rider knows where his pick-up men are! Pick-up men go through their own rituals. Most rodeo performances have the bareback riding kicking off the show. While the flags of the grand entry circle the arena, the rank bucking horses are loaded into the chutes. The fans get cranked up and the excitement becomes electric! Meanwhile, off behind the arena, the pick-up men are going through their own rituals. Two pick-up riders are required during a rodeo performance. It’s a dangerous job. Heavy saddles are slapped on, cinches tightened, ropes checked. Horses paw the ground nervously and each pick-up man puts his game face on. These guys know that lives depend on them, and the responsibility etches a few more lines in their weathered faces. Lightening quick response! Most rodeo pick-up men bring several horses to each performance. A lighter, faster horse is used for the bareback and saddle bronc events. There are two things that can happen when the chute gate opens. The rider either makes the 8 second whistle or he gets bucked off. Either way, the pick-up men and their horses have to respond with lightening speed. When the cowboy makes the horn and scores an official ride, he quits spurring and hangs on for a rough ride. His horse usually quits bucking and heads straight for the fence. That’s when the pick-up men earn their money. Their job is to get to the cowboy as fast as possible and let him grab on to their arm, shoulder or the back of their saddle. Then, if all goes well, they set him down gently and disappear like ghosts into the background of the arena again. Skill and experience make the difference. If a cowboy gets hung up in his rigging, or the pick-up men can’t catch up with the bucking horse, the outcome could be a disaster. That’s when skill and experience of a good pick-up rider can make the difference. If a cowboy’s hand gets stuck in the rigging or a boot hangs up in a stirrup, both pick-up men need to communicate with each other and the cowboy. One will try to get a rope on a bareback horse or grab the saddle broncs halter rope to stop him from running. The other tries to avoid flailing hooves and move in on the other side of the bucking horse. If he can help the cowboy get loose, he takes his

Page 19: Just Bucking News Volume 2

Just Bucking News 19

shot. If not, he’ll try to crowd the bucking horse enough to slow him down and still get the cowboy loose. With some good luck, all injuries are avoided and it’s on to the next contestant.

Bulls don’t usually go quietly out of the arena. The last event of each rodeo performance is bull riding. For the fans, it’s the most exciting part of rodeo. For pick-up men, it’s the ultimate challenge. This is where his heavy horse earns his oats. The bullfighters and barrel men are there to distract the bull, so the cowboy can get out of the arena. Most of the time bull riders are not counting on the pick-up men for immediate help. When the bullfighter has the attention of that big and dangerous bull, the rider scoots up the fence and out of danger. Then, the job of both pick-up men begins as they haze the bull out of the arena, before he can do much damage. With almost a ton of beef on the hoof, the pick-up men hope the bull goes quietly through the return gate. If he decides to get stubborn though, all bets are off and the pick-up men must rope the bull and drag him out of the arena. Many good pick-up men have had their horses gored or knocked down. When that happens, a pick-up rider’s life can get very interesting. When the rodeo is over, most of the rough stock guys stop by to sit on the tailgate of a truck, near the pick-up men. They all crack a cool one and have some laughs. Still, you can hear some quiet murmurs of thanks as the bronc and bull riders get ready to leave. They know how much those ghosts of the arena mean to each of them. My name is Steve Benedict and I love rodeo. As a former rodeo producer, announcer and Executive Director of the National Senior Pro Rodeo Association, I’ve gone from rodeo to rodeo, rolling out my sleeping bag under the stock semi-trailer with some of the legends of rodeo. I’ve edited a rodeo newspaper, was a panelist at the PRCA Committee Convention and served on the PRCA Animal Welfare Committee. I want to help pass the legacy of rodeo down to future generations.
