Just Arts and Management Mission Statement Just Arts and Management Charter Middle School will prepare students for secondary studies and beyond through an innovative, in-depth, thematic educational program that emphasizes the entrepreneurial and business aspects of the Music industry by exposing students to a curriculum centered on the performing arts. How to use the Course Catalog The Course Catalog has been designed to give an overview of the curriculum and to assist students as they make their course selection. NOTE: The availability of courses listed in this catalog is dependent upon the number of course requests. All courses may not be offered every year.
Schedule
There are seven periods in the Middle School day. It runs on an alternate A / B schedule.
A days are periods 1, 3, 5, and 7. B days are periods 1, 2, 4, and 6.

ELA All sixth grade students are required to take Reading. FSA Level 1 and 2 students are required to take an Intensive Reading class. Language Arts is offered at a regular and advanced level. Placement is based on student performance and teacher recommendation.

Electives Digital Art and Design 1, 2, and 3
Students explore the fundamental concepts, terminology, techniques, and applications of digital imaging to create original work. Students produce digital still and/or animated images through the single or combined use of computers, digital cameras, digital video cameras, scanners, photo editing software, drawing and painting software, graphic tablets, printers, new media, or emerging technologies. Through the critique process, students evaluate and respond to their own work and that of their peers to measure artistic growth. This course incorporates hands-on activities, the use of technology, and consumption of art materials.
Theatre 1, 2, and 3
Students learn the basics of building a character through such activities as pantomime, improvisation, and effective speaking using articulation, projection, and breathing. Students also learn the importance of technical theatre and explore the use of such elements as costumes, props, and scenery. Students practice writing for the theatre and
explore various theatre roles and functions. Public performances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom.

Chorus
Students build on previous choral experience to expand vocal, technical, musical, and ensemble skills through rehearsal, performance, and study of high-quality choral literature. Singers focus on increasing knowledge of music theory, music literacy, and aesthetic response. Public performances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend
and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom.
Guitar 1, 2, and 3
Students develop basic guitar skills and knowledge, including simple and full-strum chords, strumming patterns, playing/singing simple melodies, foundational music theory, parts of the guitar, and ensemble skills. Beginning guitarists explore the careers and music of significant performers in pop/rock, jazz, blues, classical, country, bluegrass, and hard rock/metal genres. Public performances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom. This course may also require students to obtain a musical instrument (e.g., borrow, rent, purchase) from an outside source.

Visual Arts
Students are introduced to the rigor and routine of the art production process including: planning, producing, and reflecting on art. With an emphasis on studio arts, students explore a wide range of 2D and 3D media, skills and techniques, as related to contemporary and historical art perspectives. Projects may include but not be limited to: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, pottery, and sculpture. Students develop technical skills, foster their expressive abilities and employ the use of the elements of art throughout the production process.
Spanish Advanced
Students apply their knowledge of the language and its culture. Students will be able to engage in listening and speaking activities, and demonstrate understanding of reading and writing selections on familiar topics. Culture, connections, comparisons, and communities are included in this one-year course.
Spanish Honors (High School Credit)
The purpose of this course is to enable students whose heritage language is Spanish to develop, maintain, and enhance proficiency in their heritage language by reinforcing and expanding skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as Spanish grammar skills acquired in Spanish for Spanish Speakers 2. Students are exposed to a variety of Spanish literary genres and authors from a variety of cultural authentic sources. Language Arts Standards are also included in this course to enable students to become literate in Spanish and gain a better understanding of the nature of their own language as well as other languages to be acquired.

Robotics
The curriculum is built around the fundamental understanding of the systems that make up robots and the development of workplace competencies. The cornerstone of the class involves solving engineering design problems.
Physical Education
Students will participate in developmentally age appropriate physical activities. They will develop and reinforce cooperative behaviors and establish life-long fitness goals.
Dance
Students build technical and creative skills relative to choreographic structure, performance, dance science, and somatic movement practices; and attend to alignment, collaborative problem solving, dance conditioning, and safe studio practices. They study works of historical significance and make multidisciplinary connections to create new works inspired by environmental, social, cultural, and current events, employ dance as a healthy life skill, and use dance terminology to describe the expressive and aesthetic qualities of performance. In parallel with their learning opportunities in dance, students investigate careers in a wide variety of fields. Public performances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom.

Music Production
This course offers an introduction to the fundamentals of composition and music theory, music production techniques, including live audio and recording software. Students will analyze musical recording and how the influence our everyday lives and cultures.
Journalism / Yearbook
The purpose of this course is to enable students to gain skills in one or more of the following areas: journalistic media, page design, advanced publishing techniques, copywriting, editing and photography, while producing a creative and innovative yearbook, which records school memories and events.
