I don’t know why we keep doing this to ourselves. You know what I mean...getting up so early. They say get plenty of rest, eat right, and exercise and you will live along healthy life. But “THEY” forgot about trucks and crusing around with the guys.

The Pres Says... by Jeff Hornsby

On New Years Eve day I was on my way to help a club member with his power windows. On that drive to Huntington Beach I gave Ed a call to wish him a happy New Year. He ask where I was going so I told him I was on my way to Dan’s to work on his windows. He told me that Rudy and Dusty were at Chris’ to help him with his rear springs. I thought to myself how cool this is. The club I in vision is not just at the meetings, car shows and rod runs. It is friends interacting with each other and helping each other when needed. We all have special talents to contribute. I could fill this page with the stories of how one club member came to the aid of an-other and many of them would be how you have helped me. All you have to do is ask or complain loud enough and some one will step forward. This is the best thing about this club knowing you have friends that want to and do help each other. I thought that January and February were going to be a little slower than usual but NOOOO. First we had some friends come down from the frozen north to spend some time in sunny California (it rained most of the week they were here). Chris put a day tour together for them and what fun. You can read all about it later in this news letter. Most of you know me I will only get up early 4:30 am to go to a car show or to play golf. So to say I was happy to set my alarm to 4:30 am to go out into the cold dark morning would not be true, but I have to tell you it was one of the best days I have had in a long time. The Canadians Cruzin’ California was a blast and we got to meet some new friends and talk about hot rods all day. As all of you were getting ready for the big game I was up early again to attend the National Council meeting. I picked up Rich Miller and we headed out in the rain. I am happy to say that sweeping legislation was passed and we had a good breakfast with friends from the other Chapters. More on the changes in a few pages in the National Council report. On February 8, Chris as always was looking out for our mental health and organized a trip to Pomona for our yearly fix of tire smoke and nitro methane. We do this every year and what fun. We even talked Bill Degain to come and allowed his son play hookey from school. Dan and his son were there along with Rich, Dusty, Bill Chisel, Chris and his friend and ex-top fuel driver from the 80’s Bob. My hearing came back sometime in the next day. On the way to the parking lot Rich and I were talking about the Orange Plaza car show as they only take 400 cars and it sells out in a week. Chris heard us and said he received his confirmation and so did Dan and I thought Rich and I were the only ones from O.C. going COOL like minds think alike. So 2008 started out a bit slow but what a bunch of fun. Keep on Trucking Jeff

Well, 2008 started out with a lot of rain on the West Coast. And between the rain drops and a busy work schedule, I was able to get one of my items off my “To Do List” from 2007. One big item for me was upgrading my wiring. I didn’t know much about the wiring job that someone had done before I purchased the truck but I did know it needed to be upgraded.

I used a Painless fuse block I had gotten from Bill Lee a year or two ago. I spent months before starting the project just planning out the steps in my head. Relays here and there, gauge of wire there, new this and that. Man, once I got started, as you know, it’s hard to stay on track. One thing led to another and the next thing I knew everything that was on the inside and was now in the back of the bed for a month. Little plastic bags marked and filled with screws I had taken off of things, old wiring everywhere on the floor, new tools purchased to replace ones that I had broken.

It was all good in the end. I got everything done I wanted to and even tackled things that I haven’t done before. Yes I did learn a few things along the way. It sure was nice to have my friends from the club for help and the internet to search projects and get some answers to questions that came up.

I have to take a moment and mention FTE (Ford Truck Enthusiasts). FTE members extend a helping hand on all topics related to FORD trucks. It’s a great to have this source of information for truck related stuff. There are some nice things available that others have already done for reference. Check it out at www.ford-trucks.com and I’m sure you will agree.

The next thing on my list is to re-do the brake system. I’m sure it will get me into things that will require some hits on the FTE site and fellow club member too, but that’s half the fun of this hobby. It also takes the stress of the day, and blows it away. Enjoy your truck whenever you can.

See Ya Soon.:)Ed

National Council Meeting...Super Bowl Sunday As I said earlier in this newsletter, I was up at o’dark thirty to go to this meeting. I picked up Rich about seven and we were off to the meeting. Usually I am the first one to arrive but not this time almost everybody had ordered breakfast and was waiting for us. The meeting started around 8:00am and after taking roll and reading the minutes, the business of the day started. By chapter vote, it was decided that any Chapter that wants to, can accept 1948 - 1968 / F-1 - F-100 Pick-ups, Panels, Long Beds, Flat Beds. Each Chapter can decide what they will allow and change their By-Laws to reflect the change. This took us a year but I remember when they wanted to get the Panels in it was a harder fight. The other changes were: • Each Chapter may choose to adopt a jacket and T-shirt unique to their chapter• Regular meeting may occur at least once per month• Each member truck will have 2 votes Jim Moore was there and read the accounting of the 2007 North/South run. He presented the Council with a check for our proceeds from the run. He also passed out flyers for this year’s North/South run which you will find in this newsletter. The event is moving to San Luis Obispo to a much nicer hotel and with more excitement planned. The dates are August 15-17 and the Host Hotel is Embassy Suites Hotel. I called Embassy Suites last week and they told me the rates for the room will be $159.00 per night their regular rate is $229.00 per night all rooms a suites for those of you that went last year I am sure you heard that Big America was raising there rates to $150.00 per night. But wait their is more! The Hotel is next to a mall with shops and eateries plus you get a to order breakfast and happy hour with your room. On Friday, the hotel is providing hoses, buckets and towels to wash our trucks. Still not cool enough for you? The banquet is going to be at the hotel plus the show and shine. On Thursday night there is a farmers market in SLO and Friday morning I will be going to Morro Bay with a few new twists. Friday night will finds us in Atascadero for Hot El Camino Night This is a big cruise in this region and Orange County member and Past President Bob Busick has secured his Bother in-laws Jeep dealer-ship front parking lot for us to park in when we are not cruisin. There will be a Santa Maria style barbecue right there. Saturday will be the Show and Shine at the Embassy Suites. How cool I can sleep in and still get a good spot. So what are you waiting for I got my reservations and sent in my registration. THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN see you there! We also talked about the plaques and National Council thinks that we have had them for 40 years and they are part of the club so trying to change them I feel will be an up hill battle, but there is nothing in the Constitution about Chapter Plaques if want to have one, we can do so. The new Chapter Presidents are: San Diego Vince Jacket Inland Empire Gary Ewing San Gabrial Meguel De Anda Pomona Greg Foster Ventura Dave Bryan

GO TRAVIS GO!!!Travis Noack may be new to our group but he is definitely not new to trucks. As editor of Street Trucks Magazine, Travis has the op-portunity to lay hands on all the latest stuff that exists. I guess that’s why he decided to do a “56 F-100 for his next project...the best truck should have the best goodies on it. I’m hot sure if he will make it to the Western Nationals this year or not as the SEMA show is his target, but we could always get one of our work parties together to help him!

Join me and the gang for a stroll down that lane we call the Veteran’s Stadium swap meet. We leave at 6:30 SHARP to get a good parking spot and a first shot at the goodies so bring your money...

We don’t miss too many of these. Dale’s Dinner took great care of us today.

Can you say Project Truck?

Besides our trucks, there were 5 or 6

F-100’s in the lot plus several F-1’s and

I think Dusty found something he just can’t live without!

The Heap of the Week...When I worked on the high school weekly newspaper back in the ‘60’s, I remember doing a column called the heap of the Week. Every week I went out into the parking lot to see what I could find to write about. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good. So here is the latest in a sometimes installment that I will call the “Heap of the Week”.

A few weeks ago on a foggy morning, I was heading over to Glenn’s Brake and Alignment to check on the front end re-build he was doing on my truck when I stumbled on to this guy at the gas station on the corner of Brookhurst and Hamilton. He told me that he had some apartments in the area and had been using this truck for years as a “basic beater”. Check it out, he was hauling away an old Christmas Tree in this “show rig”. This truck may not look so perfect, but he had trans-planted Dana axles and a Diesel into it for something that could really pull out the tree stumps if you know what I mean; and check out that exhaust! I had my camera but no note pad so I do not have a name fo this gentelman. At at least I had a Western Nationals flyer to give him. Those F-100’s just keep rolling along!

Spray Can Alley.....By Larry Lopez

It’s the season of love, the nights are cold and wet, make sure you keep your favorite truck warm and dry. Oh ya, we can’t forget our better half. Hope all of you had a wonderful Valentines day.Speaking of cold weather, its that time of the year when you should replace them old wiper blades and make sure the heater is still working, if you have one. I’m still working on mine, about the time it warms up, I should have it finished. Secretary Wise there is nothing new to report. It’s a little slow for me right now. I did want to mention our newest meeting place. I have to admit it’s a nice place to have our meeting but I kinda felt I was it was a little too nice. The cars in the background were a nice touch but I would rather have our trucks for the background. During the summer it will be nice to seat out on the patio area but that would be for a few months. I understand it’s a difficult thing to find, our group seems to be growing at a good pace so I guess it’s a good problem to have. I’m sure most of you got a taste of the music they have, that’s about the time the meeting ended. That’s just my 2 cents about Original Mike’s

I received an email from Chris today regarding a summer picnic. At first I was thinking, ya that would be cool, then I opened the email and realized it was just someone playing around. I think it would be a great thing if we could do a picnic that doesn’t involve a car show. I know that we could come up with a great place to have a club picnic for the day. It’s just something to think about. Will I hope everyone has had some time to work on there trucks. I know its difficult to balance fun with work and family but if your like me, driving my truck around town just seems to make it all worth while.

Keep on having fun! Larry

How long has it been since you came to a meeting? It’s more fun than ever at Original Mikes. The food and service is fantastic and the location is great. This group looks like they arehaving fun doesn’t it? http://www.originalmikes.com/

Indianapolis Motor Indianapolis Motor SpeedwaySpeedway Tour Tourtext & photos by Steve Stillwell

It was only 30 degrees outside, but I was determined to see the Indy Museum!

As many of you know, I joined Bobit Business Media back in September as Editor of Truck & SUV magazine. I will be attending a number of SEMA events throughout the year, including this past February 8th and 9th when I was in India-napolis, Indiana for the Off-Road Expo. The Indiana Convention Center is packed with the world’s leading equipment suppliers and off-road equip-ment suppliers. Bobit Business Media had a booth to distribute magazines and advertising materials. Since we had to get into town a day early to set up the booth, I could escape the Convention Center once that task was accom-plished. What to do in Indy? Hmmmm, go to the race track and take a tour of the World famous museum which houses more vintage race cars and memorabilia than you are likely to see anywhere else.

The first museum was established in 1956, only large enough to display a handful of cars. In 1975 Tony Hulman built the larger, more modern museum with it opening coinciding with the country’s Bicentennial. Interesting that the museum rotates up to 75 display vehicles among the ones pictured being, The Marmon Wasp, which won the 1911 inaugural Indy 500, Four two-time winning cars, the Boyle Maserati and the Blue Crown Special. A.J. Foyt’s four Indy winning cars, a Duisenberg which won Indy and the French Grand Prix and the list goes on.

Take a close look at the Ford powered sprint car turned Indy racer that Foyt took to the winner’s circle. My per-sonal favorite has to be Granatelli’s turbine powered Indy race car, which I personally saw race at tracks in New Jersey and Pennsylvania in 1967! The car was unbeatable, however, as I recall a failed bearing sidelined the car at Indy. The car only produced a turbine whine at speed, and a lot of race promoters felt the lack of race engine noise would affect track attendance. The real problem with this powerful car was the lack of engine compression, so all the corner braking was from four disc brakes…none from the engine.

If you ever get close, take a tour as it is well worth the money. I even dropped an extra $3 for a tram tour of the track. Best part was a close-up look at the original brick start-finish line. The almost flat ribbon of asphalt winds 2½ miles, which means a race car would have past the bus 15 times in the amount of time it took us to com-plete one lap! This is one track straight out of the Americana history books.

Some guys have a real attitude about going to work...

The Winternationals have been not only a Southern Cali-fornia tradition for years, but a way of life for many of us. Along with friends and family, I have been either ditching school or work almost every year to attend this event with this year being no different.

It was just 5 short years ago that I attended this race with about 8 buddies, my cousin and his 3 boys, my nephew and my brother Mike. We always gathered quite a group and had a fantastic time like we did this year. There we were, betting on each race (quarters only) and talk-ing crap to each other. It wasn’t the races that really mattered, it was being together and getting back to basics of life, just like with you guys here at Pickups Limited. Since the mid ‘60’s we had been doing this event together but this year was going to be different. When we left the track and said good by to each other, I had no idea that this would be the last good by I would be able to say to Mike. The very next morning he passed away suddenly at the age of 54. You can see why this event is always so special to me.

The idea here is not to get all mushy on everybody, but to again make my important point...why do we do what we do? You know, it’s a ton of fun to hang with the guys on the starting line at the drags or get grease all over your-self at the junk yard or sit with others at the donut shop or just that impromptu conversation on the phone while driving home from work. For most of us it is who we are, like it or now! We are truly an extended family like Pat Ford says at each of his events. The comon bond is F-100’s and cars in general so keep it fresh and keep it fun!

If you want a real treat some time, stop by Glenn’s Alignment & Brake Service in Costa Mesa, located at 2135 Canyon Drive. This is more than an old fashion type of shop. It is quite the opposite in fact with all of the latest equipment for every job. Sure you will see plenty of vintage cars, trucks, and street rods, but the fact is that the majority of the business is made up of every day family drivers. These guys just flat out know how to do things right the first time and my truck is a estimate to that. Glenn drives his ‘56 F-100 every chance he gets and stays plenty busy working in the shop (proba-bly cherry picking the fun jobs) as well as running this fine tuned business. Glenn joined up with Pickups Limited of Orange County last year and has joined us once or twice at the Donut Shop on a Saturday morning or two, but maybe, just maybe we can coax him out to a meeting or two sometime.
