Dear Janssen School Community,
Happy New Year!
Our students arrived to school after winter break to start 2018 in such a
positive way. Our staff was ready to welcome them back. Our school was
filled again with people, voices, and smiles. Everywhere I walked, I wit-
nessed students learning, staff collaborating, and volunteers helping in
classrooms. What an awesome way to start the new year.
With January comes the end of Semester I and progress reports. Our
teachers are completing their assessing of students’ progress toward their
learning goals. You will have access to your child’s progress report within
Infinity Campus for semester one by the end of this month. Because our
parents and teachers communicate frequently throughout the school year,
the progress reports will confirm for you what your child can do and with
what he/she may struggle. As always, whenever you have concerns on how
your children are doing, please connect with their teachers.
Our annual science fair is this month. Our scientists are putting their fi-
nal touches on their experiments and presentations. Because of their re-
search and experimentation, our young scientists are uncovering science
concepts that they find interesting. A big thank you goes out to all staff
and parents for their support in making the science fair a time for our stu-
dents to practice being scientists. You are invited to attend.
Starting this month, we will be working with Sgt. John Schuette with the
Outagamie County Sheriff’s Department when we need police services for
any investigative and citation matters. Officer Brandon Stahmann, Metro
Police Department, will continue to serve as a School Resource Officer
(SRO) to deliver educational programs.
‘Safety always’ should be on our minds when dropping off and picking up
our students. With winter weather conditions, continue to make the effort
to slow down and watch for pedestrians in our parking lot and on Wallace
Street. Finally, please notice an update in this newsletter about dropping
off students between the handicap parking signs in front of our school (see
page 3.) We have posted new signs to inform you that this area is not a
drop-off area.
To a great 2018!!!
Sincerely,
Hercules Nikolaou, Ph.D.

EMERGENCY MEDICATIONS
Please be aware that emergency medications
that are provided for use during the school day
will not be accessible before or after school
hours. Parents and students must plan ahead to
have emergency medication available during
school activities such as clubs and sports. If an
emergency arises and a student does not have
their emergency medication available, 911 will
be called.
JANSSEN COUNSELOR CORNER
Happy January Janssen Families!
I hope that everyone had a great holiday season
and has had a wonderful start to the year. It is
hard to believe that our school year is already
almost half over!
Life Skills Class Updates
All classes have been finishing up our focus on
understanding and accepting others’ feelings.
Over the next few weeks, our focus will change
as I deliver lessons on “Protective Behaviors” for
every grade level. Each year, I am required to
deliver these lessons as part of our Personal
Safety unit. At each grade level, we will be talk-
ing in grade level appropriate terms about safe
vs. unsafe touch, how to deal with strangers, and
who the trusted people are in each child’s safety
network. These lessons can often prompt serious
questions and/or thoughts from our students. If
your child comes home with a question about
any of the topics I listed above, please take the
time to have those important conversations with
them. And as always, if you have any questions
about the lessons or materials that I use, please
do not hesitate to contact me.
Mindful Mondays
Starting on Monday, January 29, I will be start-
ing a “Mindful Monday” club for 4th grade stu-
dents. Students will be given the opportunity to
spend their 2:00 recess on Mondays engaging in
activities that promote mindfulness. This will be
a time for them to unwind and settle their
thoughts. I will be using kid friendly mindful
moments from Mind Yeti. All 4th graders all
welcome.
Have great January!

PBIS JANUARY UPDATE
Below are some updates from our Janssen PBIS
team!
Monthly Character Trait
For the month of January, our character trait is
Honesty. In addition to our usual focus on this
trait, we will be participating in the Great Kind-
ness Challenge during the week of January 22.
Please see the parent letter with these send
home papers for more information.
Club House Winners!
This year in specials, classes get the opportunity
to earn Club House Seats. A Club House Seat is
earned if the class has shown the Janssen Way
for the entire specials class. Each quarter we will
be having different contests to see which classes
earn the most seats.
For the second quarter the classes have been
competing in their grade levels. The winners of
this quarter will earn a class pizza party and ex-
tra free play and dance time in the gym. Winners
will be announced after the end of our quarter,
which is Friday, January 19.
Quarterly Reward
Each quarter we celebrate the hard work of all of
our students. The second quarter reward will be
an awesome laser show on February 22. More
details to come!
MVP’s
Each month every class selects an MVP. This is
a student who has shown the Janssen Way and
been an excellent role model for their classmates.
There is a bulletin board across from the office
that highlights these students. If you are in the
building, check it out!
DROP OFF/PICK UP PROCEDURES
Just a reminder that the preferred method for dropping off
and picking up your child(ren) is to use the drop-off/pick-up
lanes in the parking lot. Please note that the handicapped
parking in the front of school is not a drop-off/pick-up area.
Please take notice to the new signage posted.
For drop-off and pick-up procedures and a map, please click
HERE for the flyer explaining these (or refer to our website
at www.kimberly.k12.wi.us, click on Janssen, Forms and
Documents, School Information 2017-18, then arrow down to
Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures.)
Dear Families,
As part of Janssen’s PBIS system, each month we focus on a character education trait to help the
students learn more about themselves, each other, and how to be the best Bulldogs that they can
be. We are excited to announce that in addition to our general focus on kindness for the month,
that we are also participating in the 2018 Great Kindness Challenge. During the week of January
22nd, Janssen will join thousands of schools across the country to create a culture of kindness.
Your child will be part of a powerful and positive bullying prevention initiative that will lead to more
kindness, unity, and respect at school and beyond.
During this week, our school will focus on the importance of acts of kindness through fun activities
like dress up days (see flyer included with send home papers), art projects, a special section of the
library highlighting “kind” books, as well as thoughtful lessons and discussions in their classrooms.
In addition, each child will receive a Great Kindness Challenge checklist that includes kind activities
that students will complete throughout the week with their class or on their own.
We also invite you to participate as a family using the Family Edition Great Kindness Challenge. This
checklist, as well as more information about the Great Kindness Challenge, can be found on their
website, www.thegreatkindnesschallenge.com
Together, let’s show the world that…..
