Well, what a busy month July was. It was nice to have last weekend off,
as it were, to recover and relax a bit, ready for the onslaught of August
which is even busier with regard to the number of events we are attend-
ing. Before I talk about future events, I need to thank Anne for the splen-
did BBQ she and her team put on for us at “All Jaguar Night” on the
19th July and also to thank Guy from Lancasters of Sevenoaks for bring-
ing the new XJ for us to have a good look at. Over 50 people partook in
the BBQ so maybe we should do food at every Club Night; we certainly
get a better turnout when we do.
This is the final reminder for Finchcocks on the 5th September. I need a
minimum number of 30 by Club night on the 16th August otherwise we
cannot do it as they have a minimum number for private tours. The cost
is £10 per person for a private tour & recital & then we can stay there
all afternoon if we wish and re visit the museum at leisure. If I don’t
have the numbers we need it will be cancelled.
So, events for August include National day at Althrop House on the 1st; a
classic car show at Cooling’s Garden centre on Saturday 7th contact Ted
Partridge he may still have places left; our regular visit to Cranliegh on
the 15th contact Ray Tyler; Herne Bay Motor show on Saturday 21st and
the Bexhill Classic on bank Holiday Monday 30th. For the last two I have
booking forms if you wish to go, but don’t delay too long.
Ray Tyler has asked me to mention that we are presently a bit thin on the
ground for Cranleigh which is surprising considering that it is one of the
biggest and best events we attend with plenty for the ladies and lots of
stalls plus a good show in the arena. Do please give him a call if you
plan to go.
August Club night on the 16th at the Dog & Bear is a “Noggin & Natter”
so hope to see you there, if not at one of the events.

I expect that you’ve all heard of El-
vis Impersonators but this takes the
biscuit. This is a picture of a Morris
Dancer who is one of a very small
number of Ted Partridge imper-
sonators. I think he’s awfully good
but is there any call for it? This next picture is of Trevor Lang casting
his eye over the new XJ that Lancasters
kindly brought to the Barbeque on our July
Club night. It had a mixed reception but don’t
all departures from an established theme get
an initial thumbs down from the diehards?
Time will tell.
STOP PRESS Ray Tyler has just announced that another factory visit to Castle
Bromwich in January 2011 Those of us who went this year enjoyed a wonderful tour
of the XF line and Ray hopes to do the same kind of thing for the XK. Please do let
him know if you’re interested so he can decide whether or not to go ahead with it.

Le Mans Classic, 2010
On Thursday 8th July, the Club Houx Annexers went to Le Mans for the
Classic 2010 with invited guests Chris Fox and yours truly – Stan Rogers.
We stayed in a hotel near Calais overnight before making the 200 mile
journey to a hotel some thirty miles from the circuit which meant early
starts each morning if we were to get to the track-laps which preceded the
daily events.
As we all followed Rikki round the track on the first day, little did we
know what was in store for us.
Chris, driving his 60 year old XK120, thought that he was out of petrol
and pulled off the track to replenish from his emergency can to his embar-
rassment and to the vast crowd’s amusement. The car still wouldn’t start
and inspection showed that the forward core-plug had blown, flooding the
distributor and rendering the electronic ignition unit useless. A recovery
team got him safely back to the compound where we pushed him to our
reserved space with help from an international array of willing souls.
What to do next? Find a solution of course and so we proceeded to beg
borrow and cadge the spare parts we needed plus the skills and know how
to convert the ignition back to its original state. We worked in tempera-
tures of 35 degrees with bottled water costing a ‘cool’ 3 Euros and we
finally succeeded by 2:00pm on Sunday, just in time to enjoy 20 minutes
of the last race.
My own spectacular claim to fame was running off the track at about
120mph. completing a round turn and two half hitches before traversing
the track backwards out of control. No other cars around thank goodness.
This was a successful and enjoyable event and thanks are due to Mark
Bideleux for all his efforts to make it so.
Chris Fox had a good journey back to his home in Spain, a drive of about
1000miles
