Welcome to the BMD Northcliffe Surf Club.

Please find the following information that will assist you through the 2017/18 season. Throughout the booklet you will find information on the running of our Junior Activities program. We understand there is a lot of material covered and you may not read the entire book, but please refer to it if you are unsure of anything. If you have any further questions that aren't answered in this booklet please contact Tiarne Smith. (details pages 22-23) Although Surf Sports is a great recruiting tool for the club our main aim is to provide the following - • Instruction in surf safety & surf awareness • Lifesaving & first aid skill development • Competitive sport activities • Platform to senior patrolling duties • To increase fitness and be involved in an active lifestyle • Enjoyable social activity for children & parents

BMD Northcliffe club days are the foundation from which we build our basic surf and competition skills along with awards and accreditations such as the Surf Rescue Certificate. Club days are held every Sunday between the months of September and March and begin at 8.15am. We also have a break over Christmas for a few weeks.

Each age group has an Age Manager with one or two assistants. The Age Manager is responsible for the education, training and organisation of the group during Sunday Nipper days and Carnivals.

The coaches of water and beach activities have overall control of the Junior Development Training Squad sessions, school holiday program and extra activities.

The BMD Northcliffe Junior Activities are managed by the Junior Activities Committee consisting of our Vice President - Junior Activities, Age Managers/Assistant, Team Manager, Registrar, Gear Steward, Coaches and Chief Water Safety Officer. They meet on a monthly basis to discuss future planning and current operations. All members are welcome to contribute at these meetings by contacting Tiarne.

2017/2018 JUNIOR PRELIMINARY SKILLS EVALUATION

Every junior member must participate in both the Pool and Beach Evaluation, conducted by the club, prior to undertaking any water activity.

The Pool Evaluation can be completed at our Sign on day and must be completed before any nipper can join.

The Beach Evaluation is carried out in the first few weeks of nippers and consists of a continuous effort of sand running, freestyle swimming in the ocean and sand running which must be completed competently. Any child that doesn’t complete the beach evaluation, will be restricted to in-shore water activities at the discretion of the club.

The Competition Evaluation must be achieved before being eligible to compete in inter-club competition. This is a minimum standard water proficiency requirement. Distances may be adjusted by the Chief Assessor dependent on surf conditions. To compete in a Branch/State event, the nipper must gain their respective age award prior to close of nominations.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT NIPPERS

The nipper program will always depend on the surf conditions on the day. If the conditions are favourable, more time will be spent in the water than on the beach and vice versa. Below is an example for an U10 age group on a “good” day

The majority of our Sunday Nippers are based on fun activities whilst teaching beach safety. The younger age groups (U6-10s) do have some Sundays at Evandale lake to encourage further participation in an open water environment.

The club also runs 3 Championship Days to determine an Age Champion and place getters. To be eligible for Age Champion, the nipper member must attend at least 50% of Sunday nipper days. The best 2 overall days will determine the age champion. Points are awarded as follows 1pt = 1st place, 2 pts = 2nd place etc. The nipper with the lowest points total wins. Championships days are to be advised when the carnival schedule is available On the following pages you will see the range of activities and skills the program aims to conduct.

U9s - Surf Aware 2 Beach Evaluation : 50m run, 50m open water swim, 50m run

Competition Evaluation : 150m open water swim

Surf Aware 2 builds on Surf Aware 1. Personal Safety Networks are introduced so partici-pants are comfortable asking for help; Ecosurf talks about the impact surf lifesavers can have on the beach. Safety of self steps up a gear by introducing safety tips and the ability to identify hazardous surf conditions. As an U9, participants can begin to use a nipper board, so basic board positioning and paddling is introduced. Other surf sports skills focus on; body surfing, sand running technique and diving for a beach flag.

Participants will identify adults at the surf clubs they can ask to help them, in Ecosurf they focus on water conservation and in sun safety the spotlight is on the consequences of skin damage. Participants learn about rips, recognising unsafe behaviours and relating these areas to preventative actions. Resuscita-tion is introduced for the first time with an opportunity to experience CPR on a manikin. Rescue techniques are also introduced for the first time as participants learn to use body boards to assist distressed swimmers and experience rescue tubes. Surf sports skills focus on; entering and negotiating the surf on a board and beach relay baton changes.

• KEY OBJECTIVES - As above U9s plus below • Perform introductory self rescue skills • Understanding training terminology • Catching unbroken waves from swimming, swim to back break • All above with confidence and speed, slipstream • Continue to advance skills in all events, Knowledge of tactics in flags and wade • Has completed beach evaluation

U11s - Surf Safe 2 Beach Evaluation : 50m run, 100m open water swim, 50m run

Competition Evaluation : 288m open water swim

Surf Safe 2 takes a significant step up in the level of content. As U11’s they have the ability to learn more technical aspects of lifesaving and are able to be more physical in surf sports skills. Participants are encouraged to persist when needing help and Ecosurf gets into ener-gy conservation. There is a strong focus on recognising ‘at risk’ people and recognising and managing patients suffering from a range of basic first aid cases. As a 10 year old par-ticipants can learn how to perform CPR and there is an opportunity to work towards a Re-suscitation Certificate. There is also a strong section on communication both interpersonal and through beach signage. There is a significant percentage of surf sports skills which focus on; board dismounts, catching waves on a board, board relay, surf swimming tech-niques, crouching beach sprint starts and ironman/ironwoman & cameron relay transitions.

• KEY OBJECTIVES - skill development, enjoyment, fun, group interaction, self confidence • Begin to concentrate more on specific area (beach/water) but still train at both • Work on “intermediate skills” and have reasonable knowledge of rules • Begin moderate endurance training to help with Iron and extra events now available • Increase confidence in surf and surf awareness • Promote good training ethics and desire to train to improve

U12s - Surf Smart 1 Beach Evaluation : 50m run, 100m open water swim, 50m run

Competition Evaluation : 288m open water swim

Surf Smart 1 continues similar to Surf Safe 2. Participants begin to learn about their rights and responsibilities as a member of SLSA, the Ecosurf lesson looks at how weather im-pacts on the beach environment. Personal health & wellbeing and sun safety is focused on skin cancer and staying fit and healthy respectively. The role of patrols is first introduced to this award as is the managing rips and using them to assist in rescues. As an 11 year old, participants can work towards a Basic Emergency Care Certificate (as well as a Resuscita-tion Certificate). This certificate comprises of lessons in the human body, complete basic first aid and resuscitation. Some more signals are introduced that compliment the first set previously learnt. Previous board skills come into play as participants learn how to conduct a board rescue. The focus of surf sports skills is to complete all the skills in each skill set and includes; rolling under a wave on a board, diving under large waves, beach sprint arm and leg drive and beach flags race strategies.

• KEY OBJECTIVES - skill development, enjoyment, fun, group interaction, self confidence • Hold body wave using arm, correct wading • Advanced board rescue skills. Negotiate surf using correct choices, late take offs • Speed drills introduced, fine tune skills on beach

U13s - Surf Smart 2 Beach Evaluation : 100m run, 100m open water swim, 100m run

Competition Evaluation : 288m open water swim

The last of the junior development awards, Surf Smart 2 looks to wrap up the skills and knowledge learnt in all the previous awards. Participants learn about what the SLSA Mem-ber Safety and Wellbeing Policy is, and in Ecosurf they tackle the issues of Global Warming and Climate Change and how they will impact on surf life saving. Surf Safety is wrapped up into the 10 Surf Safety Tips, Communication focuses on the importance of communicating with beach users, Patrols identifies other professional emergency services and participants will experience performing a tube rescue. Participants can work towards a Basic Emergen-cy Care Certificate. This certificate comprises of lessons in the human body, complete basic first aid and resuscitation. The focus of surf sports skills is on bringing all the skills learnt in previous awards together to participate in an event for each of the disciplines: board race, board rescue, surf race, run swim run, beach sprint, beach relay, beach flags, ironman/ironwoman and cameron relay.

• KEY OBJECTIVES - skill development, confidence, fitness, fun, team work, responsibility • Demonstrate surf awareness and emergency care • Begin moderate endurance training to help with Iron and extra events now available • Promote good training ethics and desire to train to improve

U14s - Surf Rescue Certificate Beach Evaluation : 100m run, 100m open water swim, 100m run

Competition Evaluation : 288m open water swim

Up until the Under 14’s, the Junior Development Program, covers lessons in areas of surf lifesaving including surf awareness, first aid, resuscitation and surf sports skills to provide a learning pathway towards the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC). This is the introductory award for patrolling surf lifesavers and allows the recipient to take part in beach patrols. A member must be 13 years of age to sit the examination for this award. Completion of this award is a minimum requirement for participation in surf sports competition. Following their training, all SRC holders are required to complete some patrolling duties. These are important for the junior to utilize the skills that they have learnt.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

My son turns 5 in October 2017, can he join then?

No, sorry, he needs to be 5 on the 30th September to join for that season. He will

be able to join the following season.

My child is currently 11 (12 in January 2018), what age group will he be in?

The age group that your child is, is the age they are as at the 30th September, therefore your child was 11 on the 30th Sept 2017 (turning 12 in January) and therefore is classed as being in the Under 12 age group (even though they turn 12 during the season).

Can I drop my children at nippers and leave?

No, it is absolutely necessary that a parent or designated guardian is at the

beach during the entire duration of nippers.

I have 3 children and can’t be with all groups at the same time?

That is fine. Parents of U6 & U7 children need to be with their group at all times.

Parents of U8-14s just need to inform the Age Manager where they will be if they

are not going to be with the group. My friend’s birthday puts him in a different age group. Can they be together?

Sorry we need to obey the policies set by SLSA that children are put into groups

where their birthday falls - they will be able to make new friends and still be able

to socialize before & after. How often do I bring my child to the beach?

Our Nipper Days are held each Sunday (start 17th Sept - 25th Feb with a few weeks off over Christmas). We understand that families are busy so the program doesn’t require 100% participation but your child will benefit from regular attend-ance. We also have mid-week specialized training sessions available to those who wish to improve their skills and fitness. Check the email newsletters and club notice board What does my child need?

Club cap and high visibility rash shirts are compulsory. Togs, water bottle, towel, goggles, sunscreen. Check out the apparel on pages 20-21 What do children do in Surf Life Saving?

Depending on their age group, Children will cover sprints and flags, swimming, board paddling, wading, basic CPR/ first aid skills, junior development and lots of FUN activities. They will also learn surf lifesaving skills, surf awareness, and intrinsically develop personal and emotional skills.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Junior Awards – what are these for my child?

Each age group award has sessions that they participate in to acquire relevant skills and knowledge. They will need to attend and participate in all of the compulsory sessions to attain the award. They must also complete the pool and Beach Evaluation to obtain the award.

Does my child have to be able to swim?

Yes, for U8-U14 age groups as they need to complete their Pool Evaluation including a swim and a float. U6 & U7s need to show competency in the pool. This is carried out before participating in any Junior Activities session to assess their swimming and self survival ability in the water. This will determine whether they can progress to Junior Activities. They will then be required to complete a Beach Evaluation (Run- Swim-Run) to participate in water activities. The next step is for them to train to complete their Competition Evaluation which allows them to compete at inter-club carnivals. Only those who wish to compete are required to complete the Competition Evaluation.

Is this a learn to swim program?

No. Although your child will benefit enormously and increase their confidence from exposure to open water based activities including swimming and board paddling. We do not provide specific learn to swim training or stroke correction. This is strongly encouraged to be taken up externally.

My child is not a strong swimmer / competitor but wants to be part of a team. Is there anything they can do?

YES! There are two traditional events - March Past and Rescue & Resuscitation (R&R). Both events are judged on accuracy and technique, not speed. Training is required to be competitive (just like swimming). See pg 7 for training times.

What can I do to help?

Parents can become involved in many areas of Club activity. Areas can include – helping at Sunday nipper days (Beach setup/pack down, helping run activities, being an age observer) carnival officiating, first aid officer, fundraising, providing water safety at Sunday nippers, training and carnivals (if you gain your Bronze Medallion), most of all supporting your child in their Junior Activities. All courses are covered in your Junior Associative membership.

What happens when my child finishes all the various Junior Activities age groups and awards?

The Junior Development Program is designed to gradually introduce your child into the role of a qualified Surf Lifesaver and assist in patrolling the beaches. They can continue to be involved in a variety of competition events if desired. They will undertake various other awards and learn many facets of community service involvement. They can be taught specialist areas of competition and compete both at a state and a national level.

MEMBER SAFETY

Our club endeavors to provide the safest environment for all members participating in club activities to ensure minimal injury. This is done through

complying with SLSA Water Safety Policies, providing high quality water safety services and having club contingency plans in place.

Several measures have been established to ensure minimum risk.

The Chief Water Safety Officer or Junior Coach will complete a risk assessment before each activity commences which will also be monitored

throughout the activities by the Age Managers.

Identify hazards - rips, shallow bank, dumping waves, debris

Assess the risk - is the surf too dangerous?

Determine measures - will certain children/groups stay out of water?

Review, apply and monitor - have the conditions become worse?

Water Safety - that minimum Water Safety ratios are met and adhered to

It is important to respect the decision of the Age Manager or coach if they have limited your time or distance in the water.

Water Safety Risk Management Strategy Water Safety’s aim is to -

* Minimise nippers losing their craft * Minimise nippers bumping into each other * Ensuring the nippers ability can handle the conditions * Encourage and guide members in the water * Attend to any incidents if needed

Safety Signals - Nippers

SAFETY SIGNAL - ASSISTANCE NOT REQUIRED It is a good idea to have a safe signal such as “THUMBS UP” between a nipper and water safety to ensure the nipper is ok, in the case where they may lose their board or dumped by a wave. SAFETY SIGNAL - ASSISTANCE REQUIRED Remind nippers that if they do get into trouble and need assistance, the

signal is to put their arm straight up and remain calm (treading water and tak-ing deep breaths) until help arrives

If you have any concerns over the safety of your child, please see our

Water Safety Officer - Shannon Van Balen or Junior Co-ordinator, Tiarne Smith.

15

INCIDENT RESPONSE

In the event of an incident such as a missing person or emergency, there is a process that has been devised that all members should be made aware of.

Sunday Nipper Days

Each Age group will have an “Observer” who will be overseeing water ac-tivities from the beach. They will carry a bag which will include an air horn, small first aid kit, roll call sheets and the Water Safety Guidelines booklet

including the rescue response checklist.

In an emergency, the observer will raise the alarm by sounding the air horn. This is the signal for all nippers & water safety to return to shore.

Nippers are to assemble for roll call at their age group flag. No parents are to be near the children or take their child until approved by the roll caller.

Water safety members are to head to the area where the horn has been

sounded & await instruction from the WSO who will instigate the SAR plan.

SURF SAFETY & EDUCATION

The majority of surf education will be provided on the beach, not in a class room or formal environment (except the SRC / Resuscitation course for the older age groups). The best way to teach surf safety is through physical demonstrations, drills/exercises and visual aids (such as spotting a rip).

Please note our Junior Activities Program is not a learn to swim program.

We strongly encourage your child to attend swim lessons. Being confident swimming in a pool contributes immensely to

being confident swimming in the ocean.

COMPETITION

Competition is quite possibly the most successful recruiting tool for the Surf Life Saving Movement. The Surf Sports program offers a wide range of competition

events for all ages culminating in the Junior Queensland Championship each year.

Who can compete? • U8-U14s who have completed their run-swim-runs & competition evaluation • Nippers who have obtained their age award can attend Branch or State • Carnivals are divided into U8-10 carnivals and U11-14 carnivals • Participants need to wear a fluoro pink singlet, club togs and club cap • Have paid the competition levy

Where are carnivals held? • Mainly held on the Gold Coast although some are held on the Sunshine Coast

How long do the carnivals go for? • U8-U10 Carnivals are usually held over one day • U11-U14 carnivals can be either 1 day, 2 day or 3 day events • Club warm up is at 7am, with marshalling at 7.45am, carnival starting 8am • Carnivals involve long hours so be prepared to be at the beach most of the day.

How to enter?

• For some endurance / specialty carnivals, members need to enter themselves • An online entry form will be emailed with the newsletter, approx 2-3 weeks

prior & needs to be filled in before the closing date or your child may miss out • It costs $11 per nipper to enter into a carnival but these costs are covered in

your membership fees. The club does not get a refund if you don't compete.

What to Bring? • BMD Northcliffe tents are provided for our members and families • You are more than welcome to bring your own umbrella/tent/chair & sit nearby • You will require plenty of water and good nutritional food to last the whole day • Suncream, nipper cap, club togs, high vis singlet, towel, goggles if needed &

warm clothes if the weather/wind turns

Club Craft • Foam boards are available for U9-13s • Limited fiberglass boards are available for U11-13s competitors at carnivals • Surf rescue mals available for U14 members when they complete the SRC • Club craft will be transported to the carnival via our board trailer • You need to bring back any craft used to the tent immediately after your race.

Team Selections?

• Team selections are made by the head coach, Chris Redler with input from the coaching staff and feedback from the Age Managers & coaching staff. The ultimate decision lies with Chris Redler

• Based on performance (not necessarily results) at previous carnivals, championship days, nipper days, training sessions. Surf conditions and time table also considered

• General carnivals : participation, Branch carnivals : qualifying, State : performance

• Team may include younger age group members if required

CARNIVALS & EVENTS

There are a range of carnivals that members can enter throughout the year Nippers must have completed their competition evaluation to attend carnivals.

If you are unsure about whether or not your child should be entered into a carnival please speak to your Age Manager. Carnivals can be an exciting change from the normal nipper day

but with so many clubs attending, it can also be a daunting event for new nippers.

South Coast Branch (SCB) Point Lookout (North Stradbroke) to Burleigh Heads Point Danger Branch (PDB) Tallebudgera to Rainbow Bay (near NSW border) Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) - State centre comprises of over 36,000 members from 59 surf clubs within 6 Branches. All carnival fees are included in the Junior membership except where indicated with *

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT & BENEFITS OF BEING A MEMBER

For more information, please read our Junior Activities Parent Guide

We are a family club & we need the help of every family to share the workload so that we can continue to maintain a high standard & enjoyable environment for everyone.

Running a successful club of this size only comes from the ongoing commitment of volunteers and help offered by parents.

Please note the following expectations the club requires from their nipper parents.

• As a parent or guardian you are REQUIRED to be at the beach at all times during Sunday activities. Your child remains your responsibility. Medication, trips to the toilet and the individual general welfare of each child on Northcliffe beach is the responsibility of the parent / guardian. Nippers is NOT a child minding program. U6 & U7s nipper parents need to be with the age group at all times.

• It is club policy that at least one parent registers as a member (Associative). You are then able to assist with beach and water based activities, (see below)

• At all times, abide by the Member Code of Conduct (see notice board at club)

It is of great importance that BMD Northcliffe has a depth of personnel to call on during activities to provide our junior members a safe, educational surf awareness program whilst developing their skills.

Officials • Help with the running of the carnivals either by judging, marshalling competitors,

presenting medals, recording results or starting races. • You will need to complete a Level 1 Surf Official course. 3 hours course, plus

practical component at a carnival. Course - 7th November

Water Safety • Water safety mainly spend their time monitoring nippers in the water/shoreline on

nipper days and/or carnivals either on rescue boards, swimming with tubes/ fins • You need to have either a current Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion • 1 week course (4 full days plus exam), or 8 week course (Sunday mornings 4.5hrs)

Observer • Required for Sunday Nipper days, observers “keep an eye on” water activities from

the beach of their Age Group. • You will need to complete an Observer Certificate course. (2 hour course)

Beach Setup Task Force • Responsible for the set up / pack up of equipment at carnivals and nipper days • Depending on the amount of volunteers we have, you may be asked to help on a

few nipper days setting up and/or putting away of equipment and/or at a carnival.

We are always looking for parents to help with a variety of tasks. Please don't hesitate to put your hand up and ask your Age Manager if they need any help. You will need to hold a current working with children Blue card. Please see Tiarne for forms if needed.

APPAREL

Compulsory at Sunday Nipper days: Club age cap and high visibility rash shirt (hot pink)

Compulsory at open water activities : High visibility singlet (hot pink)

Compulsory at inter-club carnivals : Club cap, club togs and high visibility singlet (hot pink)

We encourage all members to wear the club swimming costume. Apparel for adults also available too.

Nipper apparel will be available at the Sign On Day or at nipper days. Outside of these times, please see the reception at the club from 7.30am

LOST PROPERTY

Please name all your children’s belongings with a black permanent marker preferably on a part of your item that can be seen. The amount of rashies, togs, towels, water bottles, etc that is left behind on a Sunday is astounding. • There is a lost property bin in the club near the notice boards.
