Announcements: President Mary Cain announced Doris Johnson turned 88 on September 1, 2013, and the club serenaded her with a different rendition of Happy Birth-day – not too slow, and not too fast, but half-fast.

Alan Jefferson (AJ) announced that the World Series raffle email will soon be sent out to the mem-bers. This year, it will be included as a part of the Foundation and Fund Raiser, and will have both a pool winner as before AND a winner of a $500 drawing at the Fund Raiser for non-pool winners. He also announced the lineup for several future speakers, includ-ing Maryland Secretary of Public Safety Gary Maynard and Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot.

Laurie Reuben announced that there will be a meeting after break-fast to consider the seven, not six, nominations for the Community

Service Above Self award and rec-ommend one to the Trustees. All are potential winners.

Anne London sent an email to all who had volunteered for the Police Pace race this weekend. All are to meet at 7 am at the Centennial/ Rte 108 entrance to the park.

Tom Allen announced the fundrais-er is seeking auction items. Mary Cain chimed in to say it would be on November 1, 2013 at the Ten Oaks Ballroom this year.

Foundational Moment: Darren Easton told us about grants for health, hunger, and humanity, and mentioned the Paul Harris Founda-tion Road in India that connects poor villages to the greater com-munity and provides via grants schools, microloans, and toilets.

Vocational Moment: Dawn Audia informed us that under the pending changes to health care under Obam-acare, small-business owners now must count part-time employees in their insurance plans. In January, the ratings will change (increase) based on the ages of all family members.

Membership Moment: Joan Athen challenged all club members to bring a guest/potential member to a meet-ing this month.

Program: Kaitlin Bowman, Vice president, Strategic Partnerships and Development, Junior Achievement (JA) of Central Maryland, was our speaker. JA began in 1919 as a high school afterschool program, and in the

1980s the program began looking at improving behav-iors and skill sets for financial readiness, and now focuses on kindergarten through eighth grade classes. In 1957, it began in Maryland with funding from McCor-mick, Black & Decker, and Northrop Grumman. Over 3,300 community volunteers in business help today. Why JA? Because students start considering dropping out of school in middle school, and

JA helps them decide to stay in school. The goals focus on Financial Literacy, Work Readiness, and Entrepreneur-ship, and the curriculum aligns with Common Core and the county financial literacy curriculum. JA is a partner with the Maryland State Department of Education and with Howard County (HoCo) Board of Education. There has been an increased focus in HoCo over the past two years, with job shadowing at a volunteer’s business a highlight. There are 10 staff members serving 4,300 stu-dents, so JA needs volunteers. Students have 19 hours in middle school and then take an online simulation to make a budget. Over 88% of students surveyed saw a real-world connection with the materials learned. There are volunteer opportunities to teach in a classroom or to host a job shadow program. Phil Komornik talked about his time teaching, and noted JA provides all materials and curriculum for volunteers. JA hosts a 10,000 square-

foot “town” complete with stores and other businesses, and students spend a day there learning. JA will host a fundraiser Bowl-a-thon at the Brunswick Lanes on Rte. 40 on Saturday, November 2, 2013. It has a $1.6 million budget and spends about $200,000 in HoCo.
