THE
PETTMAN JUNIOR ACADEMY
of Music
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
2012 has been another busy and successful year for the Pettman Junior Academy, it being the second year of our new extended programme including the Primary Academy, the Junior Academy and the Special Scholarship programme. It was also the second year for our outreach programme in Tauranga and also became the first year of our Auckland branch.
In Christchurch, the year started with the annual Akaroa International Summer Festival, followed by the Pettman Junior Academy Launch and Special Scholarship auditions at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Akaroa on 3 March.
After this positive start, the year became rather complicated when the University of Canterbury announced a review of both the School of Music and the Pettman Junior Academy. It very quickly became evident that the Pettman Junior Academy was under threat. However, the Pettman Junior Academy staff, parents, students and most importantly, the sponsors, stayed firmly behind the programme.
We are now proud to be able to say that the Pettman National Academy of Music has not only survived the crisis but is on the way to being stronger than ever.
Wolfgang Kraemer
THE LAUNCH – TRIP TO AKAROA SATURDAY 3 MARCH
Having set a wonderful precedent in 2011, the launch of the 2012 Pettman Junior Academy also took place in Akaroa, with a reception and concert on Saturday 3 March. Akaroa is a special place for the Pettman Junior Academy, not only as the perfect setting for the International Summer Festival, but also because it is the Academy’s sponsors, Professor Barrie and Mrs. Maureen Pettman’s hometown in New Zealand. The Akaroa community has welcomed the Academy into its midst and has been very supportive of our events.
On the morning of 3 March students and their families gathered at the College of Education to catch a bus to Akaroa. Although the weather forecast was not promising, this did not dampen the spirits of the passengers! After arriving in Akaroa in the early afternoon, everyone gathered to enjoy a lunch together, giving both returning and new students and their families a chance to get to know each other. The strong sense of community created a welcoming presence for all involved and perfectly reflected the values of the Pettman Junior Academy.
After lunch came the highlight of the day – the 3pm concert held at St Peter’s Anglican Church. This concert doubled as the auditions for the Academy’s Special Programme Scholarships and all of the performances were of an exceptionally high standard! It was a superb start to the year’s concert series.
After the concert, everybody met together once again for an afternoon tea with our very generous sponsors, Professor Barrie Pettman and Mrs Maureen Pettman.
The students and parents enjoyed this opportunity to meet the Pettmans in person and to thank them for their generosity towards the Pettman Junior Academy. Despite the rainy weather, we all had a wonderful day and it was a fantastic way to start the year for the Pettman Junior Academy.

Reports
THE PRIMARY PROGRAMMEThe students of the Primary programme have been very active in the Solfège, choir and orchestra classes. The benefit of their intensive training is now becoming evident and after two years of choir work they have all developed into competent singers. They also have a basic knowledge of the pronunciation rules of several languages and, through Solfège training, are confident rhythmically and have developed good aural skills.
THE JUNIOR ACADEMYOne of the highlights of the year for the Junior Academy students was Professor Charles Castleman’s visit in May. Professor Castleman came to Christchurch for a whole week and offered intensive tuition for all string players, with the cellists benefitting as much as the violinists. Professor Castleman also appeared in a recital with Stephen Larsen, Serenity Thurlow and Edith Salzmann.
The 2012 National Final of the CMNZ Secondary Schools Chamber Music Competition was held in the Auckland Town Hall and had an excellent representation from the Pettman Junior Academy: Alice Morgan (soprano saxophone), Andrew Robinson (violin), Han Sol Jeong (piano) from All’Aperto performed “Quartet for an outdoor festival” by Robert
Aldridge, becoming the KBB Award Winners. Diane Huh (violin), Hye In Kim (cello), Amy Ga Hee Lee (piano) as Trio Poeme, performed “Trio No.1” by Dimitri Shostakovich. Chan Woo Park (piano) from Elektra, performed “Music for a Summer Evening” by George Crumb. Daniel Sun was highly commended in the composition section for his work “Ten Thousand Tear Drops”.
As usual, many Junior Academy students and alumni were chosen to participate in the NZSO National Youth Orchestra: violins – Salina Fisher (Concertmaster), April Ju, Grace Leehan; viola – Martin Qi; cellos – Catherine Kwak (Sub-principal), Sarang Love Leehan; Flute – Hugh Roberts (Principal); Bassoon – Todd Gibson-Cornish (Principal).
OUTREACHOur outreach programme in Tauranga has developed into a programme for the upper half of the North Island. It now includes students from both Tauranga and Auckland. These students are a welcome addition to the Pettman Junior Academy programme; they are very talented and motivated to succeed.
THE SPECIAL PROGRAMMEThe students chosen for the Special Scholarships in 2012 were: Hugh Roberts, Todd Gibson-Cornish, Benedict Lim, Hye In Kim and Diane Hu.
Hugh Roberts (flute) was invited to participate at the International Summer Academy in Nice where his playing was very well received. Hugh had some competition success in the 2012 Gisborne International Music Competition, where he was a semi-finalist and won the Professor Jack Richards New Zealand Woodwind Player Award. In December, he travelled to London and auditioned for the Royal Academy of Music and was accepted into second year study toward his Bachelor of Music, where he will be starting in September 2013. Hugh will be in the flute class of Paul Edmund-Davies who is currently one of the leading flute teachers worldwide.
Todd Gibson Cornish (bassoon) undertook reed-making lessons with Robert Weeks (Principal Bassoon NZSO) as part of the Special Programme and is now making ‘Kiwi bassoon reeds’ for Howarth of London, one of the worlds leading reed suppliers. In November, Todd played professionally in the NZSO for the Mahler 7 Tour at the age of 17 years. Then he travelled to the UK to audition for further study and was awarded immediate scholarships to all three of the prestigious music schools he applied to. Todd has accepted

Benedict Lim (violin) was selected to perform in the International Young Musicians Festival “PASSION OF MUSIC 2012” Winners’ Concert at Weill Recital Hall at the Carnegie Hall, New York in January 2012. He then went on to participate in the Kocian Violin Competition in the Czech Republic, where he received the second prize in his age group. In May, Benedict travelled to Italy to compete in the Andrea Postacchini International Violin Competition, where he won a special prize. His playing was exceedingly well received by the leading violin teachers in New York and Vienna and his achievements are of the highest level for such a young player.
his place at the Royal College of Music, London and will go into the second year of study towards a Bachelor of Music (Hons). He will be a ‘Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother Scholar’ and it is the first time this full scholarship has been awarded to a woodwind player.
Hye In Kim (cello) travelled to Italy to participate in the International Padova Competition, Italy where he won the first prize in his age group and the fourth prize of the International Concerto Competition Category. The Concerto Competition category was open for players up to 30 years of age and the level of competitors was extremely high. This fourth prize is a tremendous achievement for a 13 year old.
Hye In was also a finalist in the CMNZ Secondary Schools Chamber Music Competition with his chamber ensemble, piano trio “Trio Poeme”.
Diane Huh (violin) competed in the 2012 Gisborne International Music Competition and was selected as a semi-finalist. This was a wonderful accomplishment for such a young competitor. Diane was also a finalist in the CMNZ Secondary Schools Chamber Music Competition performing Trio No.1 by Dimitri Shostakovich with other Pettman Junior Academy students, Hye In Kim and Amy Ga Hee Lee in their chamber ensemble, the piano trio ‘Trio Poeme’. They narrowly missed out on the first prize in the national finals and the ensemble received a very favourable review for their performance.
OTHER SUCCESSESJoo Eun Kim (cello) was highly successful at the International Padova Competition in Italy, winning first prize in her age group with the score of 100 points out of 100 points.
Dominic Lee (cello) won the Concerto Award (Richard Carey Award) at the Tauranga Competitions and was the overall winner of this competition.
Anna Lee (violin) won the first prize in her age group at the Tauranga Competition.
Both Hugh and Todd were also chosen as principal players for the NZSO National Youth Orchestra and were selected to be 2012 NZSO Fellowship students. In addition, they were both successful in gaining a 2012 NZSO Alex Lindsay Award. It is marvellous to see our woodwind students so well represented at this level.

Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration Concert
NELSON 17th MARCH / MOTUEKA 18th MARCH
2012 was of course the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and to celebrate this event, a series of concerts were held in Nelson. The Pettman Junior Academy was very fortunate to be invited to take part.
On Friday 16th March, two mini-buses full of string-players departed from Christchurch and travelled to Nelson. Academy students Diane Huh, April Ju (violins) and Grace Leehan (viola) were joined by university students Emily Wilby (violin), Sunny Yun (cello), Bryony Gibson-Cornish, a former Academy student (viola) and lecturers Stephen Larson (violin) and Edith Salzmann (cello). All of the musicians were kindly

billeted by families in Nelson and after a good night’s rest, set about rehearsing at the Nelson Cathedral on Saturday morning. The conductor was Carl Browning and the large choir was made up of the combined choirs of Blenheim, Nelson, Motueka and Golden Bay.
At the conclusion of this rehearsal it was decided that a spot of busking at the Nelson Markets would be a good idea and from the reaction of the shoppers, they certainly thought so too! Many were quite surprised, but delighted, to be serenaded with Mozart Divertimenti as they shopped.
The big concert was then held on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Cathedral. A large audience gathered to hear a spirited performance from our strings, local Nelson musicians on trumpet, timpani and oboe, and the combined choir. The programme contained great variety, but some highlights were: Handel’s ‘Arrival of the Queen of Sheba’ and ‘Zadok the Priest’, Mozart’s Divertimenti and the finale from Bach’s Mass in B Minor. After the concert, an
afternoon tea was held so that the audience could chat to the performers, which was a very enjoyable experience for all! After a social meal, all returned to their billets to be ready for the following day.
Motueka was the destination on Sunday for a second performance of the concert at the Motueka Memorial Hall. Once again, the concert was a great success and
enjoyed hugely by all. Afterwards, the performers made the trip back to Christchurch and arrived back tired-out, but very satisfied with their wonderful weekend full of music. These concerts were a great opportunity for the current and former Academy students to perform with a full choir in a professional context.

Charles Castleman has conducted master-classes in Kiev, London, Montreux, Salzburg, Vienna, Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo, Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Toronto, Vancouver, and over 50 U.S. Universities.
He is founder/director of THE CASTLEMAN QUARTET PROGRAM, which is in its 42nd season, now at S.U.N.Y. Fredonia in New York State, and University of Colorado at Boulder, an intensive and extensive workshop in solo and chamber performance. Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma have donated master-classes there, Mr. Ma praising it as “the best program of its kind… a training ground in lifemanship.”
At the conclusion of his visit to Christchurch, Charles Castleman was joined by Stephen Larsen – violin, Serenity Thurlow and Vyvyan Yendoll – violas, and Edith Salzmann – cello, to give a concert at 7pm on Friday 25 May, St Andrew’s at Rangi Ruru. St Andrew’s at Rangi Ruru

Musical Weekend
Saturday 6th October – Sunday 7th October Jack Mann Auditorium, Solway Avenue
The Pettman Junior Academy Musical weekend was again a very successful and positive time for our students. The concerts showcased not only our full time students, but also the part time students, who performed in the Sunday afternoon concert, along with the Junior Orchestra of The Pettman Junior Academy.
WIND MASTERCLASS – ZEPHYR WIND QUINTET
Saturday 6 October, 10am Jack Mann Auditorium, Solway Avenue.
New Zealand’s finest woodwind players have been combined to form the creamy and colourful sounds of Zephyr. The ensemble last toured for CMNZ with Diedre Irons in 2009, garnering praise from critics and audiences alike. Made up of principal players in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Bridget Douglas (flute), Robert Orr (oboe), Philip Green (clarinet), Ed Allen (horn) and Robert Weeks (bassoon), Zephyr has been described as rivalling world-famous chamber ensembles. The members
are all experienced chamber musicians in addition to their orchestral work, performing with groups such as Flight and the contemporary ensemble Stroma.
“The players immediately showed that wonderful ability to create a beautifully blended sound when needed, but also a distinctive timbre…” The Tribune
On Friday 5th October, Pettman Junior Academy students also attended the CMNZ concert given by the Zephyr Wind Quintet. The programme included works by Françaix, Ross Harris, Hindemith and Ibert.
