The Alchemy of Individuation

Two, one-week seminars, inspired by the same theme — each with its own unique orientation

the ancient practice of alchemy sought to transform non-precious materials into gold and healing elixirs. During the Middle Ages, alchemy also became

a spiritual discipline as alchemists realized that this transformation could serve as a metaphor for the transformation of the human personality.

In the second half of his career, C.G. Jung became interested in alchemy, viewing it as an unconscious projection of the process that he

would come to call “Individuation,” an unfolding of our basic nature and true self or, as it has come to be known, “Self-realiza-tion,” with a capital S. It is, as Jung writes, the “gradual emergence and clarification of something that was always there.”

The challenge we face in moving towards our own Individuation is a never-ending one. Yet there are tools we can use and skills we can learn to enhance our search for the Self and increase our chances of finding the wholeness we seek. Jung spoke of the importance of integrating our shadow, that part of us we disown because we fear it, don’t like what we see, or are ashamed of it. He also spoke of hold-ing the tension of opposites within us until what he called the “transcendent function” emerges — a resolution that is neither this nor that but a third, entirely new entity.

Individuation, as Jung saw it, is a life-long process. It is the search for inner spirituality through a connection with the Self, the center of the totality of our personality, conscious and uncon-scious. It is unique and mysterious in each of us. There is an old Hasidic ad-age that no person in the world is the same as another person; if he or she were, there would have been no reason for that person to be born.

We invite you to join us and experience an outstanding faculty of Jungian analysts and presenters for a hands-on and inspiring exploration of the Alchemy of Individuation. Each day’s seminar will combine engaging presentation and experiential work with a focus on personal and professional development over the course of the week.

“Just as a man still is what he

always was,so he already is what he

will become.” —C.G. Jung

Alchemy and TransformationAnn Belford Ulanov, Ph.D. Jung, who originally experienced al-chemy as abstruse in its symbolism and its vocabulary “nonsense” and “impos-sible to understand,” ultimately came to realize that taken symbolically, the alchemists spoke directly to where we get stuck. Transformation happens in us; it happens and we host it — yet we too get transformed. Ann Belford Ulanov will delve into how Individu-ation, understood as an alchemical process, turns out not to be only about reaching wholeness but rather finding and creating our personal Self within the wholeness of the whole.

ann belford ulanov, Ph.d., is a Jungian analyst in private practice in New York City, a member of the Jungian Psychoanalytic

Association, and Christiane Brooks Johnson Professor of Psychiatry and Religion at Union Theological Semi-nary. She is the author of numerous books, including Spiritual Aspects of Clinical Work; Religion and the Uncon-scious; and The Wisdom of the Psyche. Her most recent books include The Unshuttered Heart: Opening to Aliveness and Deadness in the Self and The Living God and Our Living Psyche.

From Earth to Water to Air to Fire: Recipe for TransformationThomas Elsner, J.D., M.A.“Indeed, if you turn the earth into water, and the water into air, and the air into fire then you would reach the wisdom.” In describing alchemy, the English alchemist George Ripley drew on a rich cross-cultural, archetypal tradition — and this ancient alchemical recipe has much to say to us if we understand it as a symbolic description of the Individua-tion process. Drawing on Jung’s writings on alchemy and the writings of contem-porary Jungian analysts, Thomas Elsner will present just how the “rotation through the four elements” might serve as a useful means for the development of consciousness.

Thomas elsner, J.d., m.a., Jungian analyst, is on the faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, where he also has a private

practice. A former attorney, he left the practice of law and trained at the Jung-Von Franz Center for Depth Psychology in Zurich. A member of the Jung Study Center of Southern Califor-nia, his areas of special interest include alchemy and the depth psychology of folklore and literature. He is currently completing a book titled Coleridge and the Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

The Landscape of the Soul in NatureJeanne Bresciani, Ph.D.The elemental forces of earth, air, fire, and water are native within and around us as active principles — ready to be manifested in body and soul. Today, guided by Dr. Bresciani, we will contact these energies, participating in enact-ments that elicit the elixirs of alchemi-cal space and time. Our setting will be the Mohonk Mountain House, nestled within thousands of acres of wilder-ness. Together, from rose garden and maze, lily pond and forest, meadow and mountain trail, rock face and crag, we will move far outward to the threshold of science, art, and magic to touch the living, natural sanctum within.

Jeanne bresciani, Ph.d., is Artistic Director of the Isadora Duncan International Institute and director of its Certificate Program in

Myth, Movement and Travel. Former faculty member at New York Univer-sity, she has lectured, performed, and led workshops internationally, includ-ing at the British Museum, the Dream Museum of Russia, the Delphi Museum in Greece, and New York’s Lincoln Center. A former Fulbright Scholar, she performs internationally and is a choreographer and creator of festivals, specializing in dance, myth and movement studies.

The Mohonk Mountain House — a Victorian castle situated on spectacular cliffs above Lake Mohonk, surrounded by thousands of acres of preserved pristine forest and winding trails — will be our setting for Jeanne Bresciani’s workshop and presentation.

Individuating from the Garage: An Earthbound Archetype Full of Treasures and JunkJan Bauer, M.A.The humble garage is rarely ad-dressed as a psychological space: full of surprises and creative potential. While “garages” house our cars, symbol of autonomy and freedom, they also house our junk and are a symbol of all we accumulate but cannot integrate- literally or psychologically. Jan Bauer will illustrate how garages, basements and attics, marginalized areas of our homes and psyches can be rich places of Individuation. In a sort of garage sale of the psyche, we will see how these earthy, “not Main House,” spaces contain elements of alchemy: fire-inspiration; air-imagination; and water-emotion.

Jan bauer, m.a., earned master’s degrees at the Sorbonne and Boston University. A graduate of the Jung Institute of Zurich, she lives in

Quebec; practices as a Jungian Analyst (in both French and English); teaches in Jung groups throughout the United States and Canada; and lectures at the University of Montreal. Former Director of Training for the Inter-Re-gional Society of Jungian Analysts, her publications include Alcoholism and Women and Impossible Love.

Everyday AlchemyGary Trosclair, L.C.S.W., D.M.A.In life, no obstacle is meaningless when viewed through the lens of the philosophy of alchemy, turning lead into gold. In Jung’s view, it is important not only to look back but also to look forward and ask, “Where does this issue or problem lead me in my personal journey?” Gary Trosclair will explore with us why it can be so difficult to embrace this outlook and help us bridge the gap from the theory of alchemy to its use in everyday life.

gary trosclair, lcSw, dma, is a Jungian analyst practicing individual and couples therapy in New York City and Westchester.

Faculty member of the Jung Institute of New York, he has lectured at the Metropolitan Opera Guild, the 92nd Street Y, and the Association for the Psychoanalysis of Culture and Society. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Jungian Theory and Practice, Quadrant: A Journal of Contemporary Jungian Thought, and the Huffington Post.

Stories of the CauldronSylvia Perera, M.A.Alchemists used many vessels. Symbols of the feminine aspect of the Self, these containers represent ancient cauldrons in which our ancestors embraced the “Elements” and enabled their transfor-mation for food and magic. Jung recog-nized the cauldron as a Celtic symbol in the West and precursor of the medieval Grail. Sylvia Perera will examine early Welsh and Irish myths about the vessel in which the Elements were combined to create potentials for the transforma-tion of consciousness. Together, we will explore some of these stories to under-stand their relevance in the analytical- and Individuation process.

Sylvia brinton Perera, m.a., Jungian analyst, lives, practices, writes, and teaches in New York and Vermont. Faculty and Board member of the

Jung Institute of New York, she lectures and leads workshops internationally. Her publications include Descent to the Goddess: A Way of Initiation for Women; The Scapegoat Complex: Toward a Mythol-ogy of Shadow and Guilt; Dreams, A Portal to the Source; Celtic Queen Maeve and Addiction: An Archetypal Perspective; and The Irish Bull God: Image of Multiform and Integral Masculinity.

Individuation: Mysterious, Subtle and Inaccessible Manisha Roy, Ph.D.The process of Individuation is mysteri-ous, subtle, and often inaccessible to the conscious mind. Yet, if we are in tune with our unconscious, setbacks and im-pediments that life may put in our path can further our own Self-realization. For these often contain what Jung referred to as the “prima materia” — the fire that moves us towards transformation and Individuation. Dr. Roy will illustrate how the old-fashioned virtues of toler-ance, endurance, and patience allow the alchemy of Individuation to take its course.

manisha Roy, Ph.d., is a trained geographer and anthropologist and received her diploma in analytical psychology from the C.G. Jung

Institute in Zurich. A training analyst on the faculty of the Jung Institute of Boston, she has taught both anthropol-ogy and analytical psychology at several universities. In private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she is author of numerous articles and books, includ-ing Bengali Women; Cast the First Stone: Ethics in Analytic Practice; and The Reckoning Heart: An Anthropologist Looks at Her Worlds.

Individuation: From the Red Book to the Great Works on AlchemySanford L. Drob, Ph.D.Jung held that the process of Individua-tion is a creative one in which opposing elements of the psyche must be inte-grated into a unified whole. With Sanford Drob, we will examine the history of this concept in ancient and modern thought, and explore its use in Greek, Chinese, and Indian philosophy, and its promi-nence in Gnosticism and the Kabbalah as well as Chinese and European alchemy. Additionally, we will learn how Jung drew from these sources to create the Red Book and form the foundation of his unique theory of the Self.

Sanford l. drob, Ph.d. is a core faculty member of the doctoral program in clinical psychology at Fielding Graduate University in Santa

Barbara, California. He holds doctorates in philosophy and clinical psychology and served for many years as the Direc-tor of Psychological Assessment and Senior Forensic Psychologist at Bellevue Hospital in New York. His publications include Kabbalistic Visions: C.G. Jung and Jewish Mysticism; Kabbalah and Postmod-ernism: A Dialogue, and his most recent book, Reading the Red Book: An Interpre-tive Guide to C.G. Jung’s Liber Novus.

professionals about how they integrate Jung’s theory into their work.

Multiplicity and Unity: Alchemical Mysteries Monika Wikman, Ph.D.When working with someone, Jung was known to ask how many parts of the person were listening or participating in the analysis. His approach leads to the opening to the depths and complexity of the psyche and personality. Dr. Wikman will explore with participants what the alchemists called “cibatio” mysteries, the subtle body phenomenon in which the field of synchronicity is activated. Once this transformation takes place, a subtle body-synchronicity field awakens expo-nentially among the diverse aspects of our psyche. Dr. Wikman will make reference to 12th-century depictions of alchemy and its mysteries, with parallels to our lives.

monika wikman, Ph.d, is a Jungian analyst and astrologer. Author of Pregnant Darkness: Alchemy and the Rebirth of Consciousness, she has

contributed articles and poems to numer-ous journals. Internationally, she leads retreats for inner renewal through the activation of the subtle body realms and lectures on mythology, dreams, wellness, alchemy, and creativity. A graduate of the Jung-Von Franz Center for Depth Psychol-ogy in Zurich, she has taught in the graduate department at California State University and currently has a private practice in Tesuque, New Mexico.

The Neuroplastic Psyche: Matrix of Individuation and HealingAshok Bedi, M.D.Our medical and psychological problems, our complexes and relationship tangles, our accidents and synchronicities are the calling cards of our soul. They beckon us to embark on a journey guided by ar-chetypes and myths, active imagination, dreams, and the neuroplastic mysteries of our complex physical reality. Dr. Bedi will illustrate how we can move from ill-ness to wellness in our quest for healing and wholeness to access the “Healing Zone,” and become full participants in our journey towards Individuation.

ashok bedi, m.d., Jungian psychoanalyst and board-certified psychiatrist, is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a

Distinguished Life Fellow of the Ameri-can Psychiatric Association. Dr. Bedi is Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin and President of the Jung Institute of Chi-cago. What Is a Mature Spirituality? We are awash with claims upon us. Many of them are external — career and family, social, political, and economic entreaties — and many of them are internal — the hopes, fears, archaic

agendas, and complexes that drive us. How does one evolve a mature spirituality out of this mélange of values, drives, and agendas? What makes us larger human beings? What brings us nearer to the achievement of being that which the soul demands of us? What most opens us to the mysteries in which we swim all our days? SatuRday, July 20

Hauntings: Dispelling the Ghosts Who Run Our LivesOur ancestors believed in ghosts, and perhaps they were not far off the mark. So much of daily life is driven by invisible psychic forces, archaic agendas, and imperious admonitions and prohibitions, all the more pow-erful because they operate unconsciously. What are the features of such “hauntings,” and how might we gain some further foothold on a more conscious conduct of life? In this intensive daylong exploration, Dr. Hollis will draw on literary and case studies to illustrate the presence of “haunt-ings” in people’s lives and the invisible powers that govern our daily lives.

James hollis, Ph.d., is a Zurich-trained Jungian analyst in private prac-tice in Houston, Texas. Internationally acclaimed analyst and author, Dr. Hollis is former Executive Director of the Jung Educational Center of Houston and professor of Jungian Studies at Saybrook University, San Francisco, California. Additionally, he is retired Senior Training Analyst for the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, first Director of the Philadelphia Jung Institute, and President Emeritus of the Philemon Foundation. Among his publications are numerous articles and four-teen books (some of which have been translated into sixteen languages), including The Eden Project: In Search of the Magical Other; Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life; What Matters Most: Living a More Considered Life; The Middle Passage; and most recently, Hauntings: Dispelling the Ghosts Who Run Our Lives.
