A Labor of Love Comes To Life

On behalf of the Festival Committee, I would like to sincerely thank you for coming out to enjoy this year’s Festival. Our committee put in hundreds of man hours over the past few months to create this Festival in an effort to begin the revitalization of the Juneteenth Holiday within the North Texas community. Throughout the day, over 150 performers will take the stage at the Bandshell at Fair Park in celebration of the freedom that Texans experienced 147 years ago in Galveston, TX. These performers will be sharing their gifts of dance, music, fashion and food with the thousands of members of the community. We are more than excited about what this day will hold!

Meet Celebrity Guest Host:

DARRIN DEWITT HENSON, is an actor, dancer, choreographer, philanthropist and producer. But above all, Darrin is a thinker. Starring in hit films such as "Stomp the Yard," "Tekken" and "Blood Done Signed My Name," (to name a few) and appearing on 5 seasons of the original television series "Soul Food," Darrin has become a true renaissance man, working with major players in the music industry including Michael Jackson, Prince, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Usher, THE SPICE GIRLS, 'N SYNC and J-Lo.

As an incomparable choreographer whose dance abilities has blessed such artists as Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and 'N Sync, Henson got his start with the late legendary hip hop DJ, Scott La Rock of Boogie Down Productions at age 14, when he joined La Rock's Vermont school tour. Darrin is an MTV music award recipient for his work with 'N SYNC and a two time nominated image award actor.Henson's most recognizable dance routine by far is 'N Sync's "Bye, Bye, Bye." Meet Tuskegee Airman:

Lt. Calvin SpannIn 1944, upon receiving his wings at Tuskegee, graduating in Class 44G, Calvin Spann was sent to Walterboro, SC for overseas training in the P-47 Thunderbolt. His orders designated him a replacement pilot at the Ramitelli, Italy Air Base, and a training manual to fly the P-51 Mustang.

Lt. Spann flew 26 combat missions including the longest and most historical mission of WWII, from Ramitelli, Italy to Berlin, Germany. Spann is among the elite group of pilots and living legends, of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 100th Fighter Squadron who served Col. Benjamin O. Davis, upholding the impeccable record of “never losing a bomber to enemy air attacks.”

Today Dr. Spann speaks to audiences and youth, inspiring the Can-Do Attitude of achieving excellence. Dr. Spann has been graced with many accolades and citations from the military, private and public corporations. More recently he was inducted into the NJ and Texas Aviation Hall of Fame. He also received an Honorary Doctoral Degree of Public Service from Tuskegee University. The Tuskegee Airmen were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor from President Bush and accepted an invitation to the inauguration of President Obama.

Dr. Spann has made many appearances from corporate to military events, educational programs, entertainment venues, grand openings, sporting events and more. His favorite is speaking to our youth, encouraging them to overcome any objections and to succeed with excellence. His remarkable story will inspire, motivate and empower audiences from all walks of life. After lifelong residency in NJ, Dr. Spann is now a resident of this great state of TX.

Fresenius Medical Care and Celebrity Chef Aaron McCargo Jr. Promote Healthy Lifestyles for Dialysis Patients

Maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise are goals for many of us, but for people with chronic illnesses, a healthy lifestyle is critical to their well-being and survival. Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA), the nation’s leading network of dialysis facilities, recently launched its Healthy Lifestyle initiative, aimed at helping people with chronic kidney disease live a better life on dialysis by becoming more physically active, eating healthy foods and enjoying more flexible lifestyles.

To help FMCNA drive the campaign, Chef Aaron McCargo, Jr., star of Food Network’s "Big Daddy’s House," developed tasty, satisfying and new dialysis-friendly recipes for people on dialysis. Those with kidney failure receive dialysis treatments typically every two to three days and follow a strict renal diet. Chef McCargo has a down-home approach to cooking, which means getting the whole family involved in preparing meals and sharing quality time together.

All dialysis patients at FMCNA facilities work with a dietitian to develop a healthy meal plan that includes plenty of protein, and limits the amount of sodium, sugar, potassium and phosphorus that they eat. In addition, patients are encouraged to eat a wide variety of renal diet foods to keep their meals exciting, while limiting their fluid intake to safe levels each day.

Along with a healthy diet, the Healthy Lifestyles initiative also encourages people with kidney failure to get moving and be physically active because it can help them have a better life on dialysis. Fitness is important for many reasons: it keeps the heart and other muscles strong; increases flexibility; improves circulation, digestion, and sleep; and helps control blood pressure and body weight. Patients can also make choices in their care to help them live more normal lives, such as choosing to receive dialysis treatments at home. Many patients who receive care at home feel more empowered to live a healthy and active lifestyle, and may also feel like they have regained control over their lives.

Jalapeno, Lime, and Smoked Mozzarella Turkey Burger By Chef Aaron McCargo Jr. & Fresenius Medical Care North America

Ingredients:•1½ pound ground turkey•1 jalapeno or 2 Tbsp finely diced jalapeno*•Juice of 2 limes and zest** of 1•1 Tbsp black pepper•1 Tbsp reduced-sodium Worcestershire sauce•4 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil•¾ cup shredded smoked mozzarella cheese•6 hamburger buns

Preparation: Preheat outdoor grill (a George Foreman® grill may also be used). In a medium size bowl, mix the first 5 ingredients plus 2 Tbsp of olive oil. Make equal size burger patties and lightly brush with remainder 2 Tbsp of oil. Cook for 5-7 minutes, flipping once, or until an internal temperature of 165° F is reached. Top each with an equal amount of cheese and melt in a toaster oven or in oven on broil. Serve on a toasted bun. (If using George Foreman® grill, once cooked, unplug the grill and add cheese to the burger. Leave the grill open and allow the cheese to slightly melt.)

Three Pea Salad with Ginger Lime Vinaigrette By Chef Aaron McCargo Jr. & Fresenius Medical Care North America

Ingredients: •1 cup sugar snap peas•1 cup snow peas•1 cup fresh blanched peas or frozen thawed sweet peas

Vinaigrette:•2 tsp chopped fresh ginger•½ cup canola (option to use grapeseed oil instead)•¼ cup fresh lime juice•1 tsp fresh lime zest•1 tbsp coarse fresh cracked black pepper•2 tbsp hot sesame oil•1 tbsp sesame seeds•1 tsp low sodium soy sauce

Preparation: Blanch all 3 types of peas for 2 minutes, then shock in cold water and drain thoroughly.Whisk soy sauce, black pepper and lime juice with zest for 1-2 minutes or until well blended. While still mixing, add ginger and slowly drizzle in canola or grapeseed oil, then sesame oil until well incorporated. Mix salad dressing with pea mixture and toss with sesame seeds, and then serve.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

One of General Granger’s first orders of business was to read to the people of Texas, General Order Number 3 which began most significantly with:

"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.“

The reactions to this profound news ranged from pure shock to immediate jubilation. While many lingered to learn of this new employer to employee relationship, many left before these offers were completely off the lips of their former 'masters' - attesting to the varying conditions on the plantations and the

realization of freedom. Even with nowhere to go, many felt that leaving the plantation would be their first grasp of freedom. North was a logical destination and for many it represented true freedom, while the desire to reach family members in neighboring states drove the some into Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Settling into these new areas as free men and women brought on new realities and the challenges of establishing a heretofore non-existent status for black people in America. Recounting the memories of that great day in June of 1865 and its festivities would serve as motivation as well as a release from the growing pressures encountered in their new territory. The celebration of June 19th was coined "Juneteenth" and grew with more participation from descendants. The celebration was a time for reassuring each other, for praying and for gathering remaining family members. Juneteenth continued to be highly revered in Texas decades later, with many former slaves and descendants making an annual pilgrimage back to Galveston on this date.

Food was abundant because everyone prepared a special dish. Meats such as lamb, pork and beef which not available everyday were brought on this special occasion. A true Juneteenth celebrations left visitors well satisfied and with enough conversation to last until the next.

Dress was also an important element in early Juneteenth customs and is often still taken seriously, particularly by the direct descendants who can make the connection to this tradition's roots. During slavery there were laws on the books in many areas that prohibited or limited the dressing of the enslaved. During the initial days of the emancipation celebrations, there are accounts of former slaves tossing their ragged garments into the creeks and rivers to adorn clothing taken from the plantations belonging to their former 'masters'.

Texas Blazes the Trail

On January 1, 1980, Juneteenth became an official state holiday through the efforts of Al Edwards, an African American state legislator. The successful passage of this bill marked Juneteenth as the first emancipation celebration granted official state recognition. Edwards has since actively sought to spread the observance of Juneteenth all across America.

Juneteenth In Modern Times

Today, Juneteenth is enjoying a phenomenal growth rate within communities and organizations throughout the country. Juneteenth today, celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures.

Juneteenth Festivities and Food

A range of activities were provided to entertain the masses, many of which continue in tradition today. Rodeos, fishing, barbecuing and baseball are just a few of the typical Juneteenth activities you may witness today. Juneteenth almost always focused on education and self improvement. Thus, often guest speakers are brought in and the elders are called upon to recount the events of the past. Prayer services were also a major part of these celebrations.

Certain foods became popular and subsequently synonymous with Juneteenth celebrations such as strawberry soda-pop. More traditional and just as popular was the barbecuing, through which Juneteenth participants could share in the spirit and aromas that their ancestors - the newly emancipated African Americans, would have experienced during their ceremonies. Hence, the barbecue pit is often established as the center of attention at Juneteenth celebrations.

Griot (GREE -OH) is a West African word for storyteller. Lady Griot enjoys telling tales about history and culture. Her storytelling career began in South Florida. She presented “The Japan Show” that was underwritten by the Morikami Museum of Japanese Culture in Boca Raton, FL. Her original story “Petit Jacques”debuted at Le Festival de Francais sponsored by The Boca Museum of Art in Boca Raton, FL. She has worked with the Norton Museum of Art and The Kravis Center of West Palm Beach, FL.

In January 2012, model/designer Charles “Harlem Child” Brame, founded Lumen Signifer Clothing to touch on topics that had been long forgotten with an entity that has been mistaken for something misunderstood.

“This line is about individuality and getting people to see that there are others in this world who think and believe differently - who see more then a one-sided spectrum. There are many walks that people walk and different, non-socially acceptable points of view that turn off most. My line is here to illuminate those things.”

The name Lumen Signifer is from the latinlanguage which means Light Bearer. Lumen Signifer Clothing is based on symbolism and blunt truth of what people want to represent but do not always have the confidence to speak on.

“I wanted to represent a truth and a knowledge of a world that is not just for the masses... Tradition is cool, but not everyone is traditional and not everyone believes the same things. My objective was to call out those who are afraid and give them an avenue to have self expression without words through Lumen Signifer Clothing.”

KWESI KANKAM (ACOUSTIC SOUL)

Soulful music runs through our life like water. It feeds a hunger, satisfies the heart, and reaches out for connection. Joy, passion, peace and pain are lifted through sound, creating a touchstone of emotion. For some, that well runs deep & wide; with the potential to transcend the moment. Kwesi Kankam’s voice is a vehicle for that emotion; as clear as a running stream and as expressive as his story suggests. Born within the glow of the Northern Lights of Anchorage, Alaska, Kwesi has seen much in his young life and time. From a West-African father of Ghanaian descent and a mother from Ft. Wayne Indiana, his music is a tapestry of relaxed grooves and melodic hooks that stay true to his world view and artistic nature.

PETERSON BROTHER BAND (BLUES)

The Peterson Brothers were born and raised deep in the “Lost Pines” of Bastrop, Texas. Alex, 13, on bass and violin and vocals; and Glenn Jr., 15, guitar and lead vocals are two brothers, two hearts and one sound. Their music combines the classic blues sounds of legends with their own unique blend of soul-infused inspiration. In just a few short years they have had the opportunity to open for B.B. King; and play with Buddy Guy and Pinetop Perkins. Voted as one of the top 10 bands in the Austin Music Awards in 2010-2011 in the blues, soul and funk category; the boys gained the attention of the legendary Bootsy Collins who has become their mentor. The band is currently in the studio workingon their debut album.

NARDA SHIRLEY & THE NATION (GOSPEL)

Narda Shirley and the Nation have made a name for themselves through a unique style of melodic vocals, heart wrenching lyricsand high energy music. This team of ministers have traveled the midwest providing a holistic worship experience for audiences at the State Capital. They have also served as the state representatives for several music festivals hosting international participants. A true worship experience is not limited by cultural, generational or denominational boundaries. “The Nation” is comprised of born again believers who are outstanding singers and world class musicians. Together, they are carrying the message of the “Bond of Peace” that crosses cultural, generational and denominational boundaries in homes, villages, and nations alike.

A Detroit, Michigan native, Jonathan "JWhite" White is a young vibrant, versatile performer. JWhite is creating his own destiny, paving a path for new jazz musicians with all-around talent rarely seen in the entertainment world. In fact, JWhite has already shared the stage alongside many industry greats like Smokie Norful, Dave Hollister, Darryl Coley, gospel saxophonist Angella Christie, Eric Roberson, Liv Warfield, P.J. BLACK NATURE BAND (REGGAE)

Black Nature is an original musical artist who composes and performs positive music that incorporates a unique blend of African Rhythms, Reggae, Dancehall, Rock, Hip-Hop and R&B. As a young child, Black Nature was greatly influenced by the rich musical culture of Sierra Leone. In the midst of the country’s brutal 10 year civil war, he fled to neighboring Guinea where he was placed in a refugee camp. During his time at the camp, he and other Sierra Leonean refugees formed a band that later became the world renowned Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars. While remaining a member of the All Stars, Black Nature also established his own band in San Francisco called the Black Nature Band. The diverse musicians perform all over the world.

MESHA (R&B)

Neo soul singer/songwriter Mesha was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and has always had a very strong passion for music. This talent has graced the stage of local venues such as House of Blues Dallas, Absinthe Lounge and the formerly Erykah Badu owned Black Forest Theather. She brought her stage presence and vocal talents to many Festivals and Expos throught the DFW metroplex. Her performance record also includes singing soparno in The Black Academy of Arts Letters Martin Luther King Jr Choir which has sang with such artist as Fantasia(2009), Ruben Studdard(2010), Chrisette Michell and Ledisi(2011). She has also lending her voice to sing backup for aspiring Dallas gospel artist Van Artist as well as singing lead for soulful rock group Xinfiniti.

ANDE’ & GIALLO (NEO-SOUL)

ANDE' feat Giallo was founded by acclaimed singer/songwriter, Andrea Lawrence, or as her fans know her " ANDE". For 2 years, the Neo- Soul/ R&B band has thrilled audiences across Texas with their tremendous energy and their proven ability to woo audiences of all ages. Melding the essence of Jazz, gospel, R&B and Neo- Soul in the styles of Nancy Wilson, Sade, Jill Scott and R. Kelly ANDE' feat Giallo combines a mixture of smooth sensual lyrics and strong vocals while entertaining and captivating audiences with their sincerity and passion for music. ANDE' featGiallo's catalog includes their critically acclaimed 2011 releases, “I Woke Up", " Let it happen", and their latest that released in the Spring of 2012 "The Heat".

DYNAHSTI (CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN)

Dynahsti is a female Contemporary Christian vocal duo group from Dallas, Texas assembled in 2006. Dynahsti launched with original members Krystal and Ashley Stepney, who are sisters. Their motto is "Created for such a time as this” - Est. 4:14. They seek to inspire therir generation to remain strong in the faith and grow into leaders. The inspiration for the duo came from their family – many of whom are gospel singers, musicians and ministers. After many of their friends were going through sickness, abuse, and family issues, the sisters were inspired by a vision to encourage hearts through music. Dynahsti’s distinctive vocal style is best described as Jazzy accents with a Techno groove.

DUCK (HIP HOP)

Houston’s own Damien Duckworth better known as Duck is an up and coming rapper and lyricist hailing from South Park. His focus is delivering high quality music that hip-hop and rap enthusiasts can relate to and enjoy. If Duck’s sound comes off as hustler music, that is because it is. Even encrypted in his club bangersare anecdotes about handling money wisely, having ambition and obtaining the American dream by attacking it from unexpected angles. Recently referred to as a rapping Barry White, his deep seductive voice is accompanied by inventive, though provoking punch lines and natural Southern charisma. By the end of his performances, venues are filled with a feeling of euphoria abouthis music and more importantly the message behind it.

SACHA (ACOUSTIC)

Sacha, currently residing in the Greater Toronto Area, was born in the city of Montreal, Quebec. This Canadian Singer/Songwriter and Composer, got her Acoustic, Country, Folk, background from beingrooted and grounded in the small town of Warkworth, Ontario. With her mother being her number one influence at a young age, music became ingrained in her body of work. Sacha's only instrument at a young age was her voice, that was her God given ability. As she matured as a young lady from her teens to adulthood, Sacha'smusic career started becoming apart of her way of thinking and living. She taught herself guitar, and would sing at every opportunity she had. Now Sacha is embarking on her professional career with the release of her first single now available on Itunes, "Nothing To Lose".

BLACK ROCK REVIVAL (ROCK)

Black Rock Revival takes the best part of the Memphis groove andcombines it with up-tempo, heavy and pure rock music. The group is made up of Sebastian (The Leader), Hype (The Beat Master) and Blue (The Bass Man). Sebastian is the lead singer and plays guitar. He also writes most of the bands songs. Hype is a twenty+ year veteran of the drums and Blue plays bass and sings background vocals. For security reasons, Blue's real name and past can not be revealed. Partially because he won't tell anyone. Black Rock Revival plays hard, funky and loose during their liveperformances. It's been a long time since there has been rock music that you can move and groove to. We like to call it Rock Soul.

ANONYMOUSCULTURE (HIP HOP)

A Dallas local and Pleasant Grove native, AnonymousCulture is combining clever lyricism, dynamic and out-of-the-box music videos, hip electronic and southern beats, and high energy performances to create a powerful artistic mixture for his fans in Dallas and beyond. Recently, he has had a song, “The Truth” debut on the NFL Network and UPN television network, had videos featured on FlavaTV and MTVTres and showcased at the Canadian Music Festival, the NX35 Conferette and the Neon Reverb Festival, and the Juneteenth Cultural Festival among other shows and opened for Mystikal, Dom Kennedy, Z-Ro and Trae thaTruth, and many more. He has also launched his brand of empowerment, I AM A Culture, to encourage people everywhere to be true to themselves.

RUMILL (POP) **YOUNG & GIFTED ARTIST**

Rumill (pronounced Ruh-mill) is a 17 year old American Pop/R&B/Hip-Hop Recording Artist originally from Memphis, TN who currently resides in Irving, TX. At birth doctors proclaimedthat Rumill would be a singer due to the octave range she exercised when she cried! Rumill is now completing her first studio demo. She is working with producer Rob Diggy of Chicago who received a Grammy Award in 2004 for the keyboard arrangements on Superstar Beyonce` single ‘Crazy in Love’ and producer/bass player Bryan Nesbitt of the Bar-Kays. Rumill has performed at numerous events in Dallas including 97.9 the Beat Live Summer Tours, Harambee Festival, House of Blues Underground and Kwanzaa Fest as well as Wet Willies and Hard Rock Café in Memphis, TN.

ALCAM (HOLY HIP HOP)

Equipped with high energy and very passionate lyrics alcambring's a unique style to the genre of Hip Hop. Being influenced by some of the most popular artist of our time his flow is inspired by many but emulated by none. Alcam is known for his ferocious freestyles, good lyrical content, and the ability to make great songs. Born in St. Louis MO, Tyrell Alcam Walker grew a passion for music as a young child. Throughout his life he continued to perfect his craft as a secular artist until the age of 22 when he surrendered his life to Christ and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. "I surrender my life to God and took a break on music sothat I could learn my purpose, learn who God is, and learn God'swill for my life. Now that I know about the God I serve I intend to give him all praise and glory for who I am today by telling my life story.” And that’s exactly what Alcam did in his 2010 debut mixtape "Rais'n the Bar. Since then Alcam continues to make music that reflects his life and lifts up the name and character of Jesus Christ.

THE VISION

HappyNia is a new stylish and intellectually provocative African American dance theater company residing at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters in Dallas that showcases community talent connected on a national and international level. Happy stands for HIV/AIDS Prevention Protecting Yourself and Nia is one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa which means purpose. The purpose of HappyNia is to directly explore social issues of HIV, Domestic Violence, and Substance Abuse through dance and drama. Its mission is to impact members of the community to self actualize and heal through performing arts.

THE DANCE COMPANY

HappyNia is a professional community company that was started by Dereque Whiturs, a Dallas native, former principal dancer of the esteemed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. HappyNia is nomadic and built on the work ethic of non-complacency encouraging its members and audience to positively move forward with their lives through its message. HappyNia is a company of highly talented dancers and actors ranging from ages 16-52. Their goal is to impact and inspire audiences through dance and acting with a fresh, bold voice of youth and experience in the process of living life.

Yuan, Christine Lawson, Homer Bryant, and George Skibine, and Maria Tallchiief, Mr. Whiturs is an Alumni of California Institute of the Arts in Valencia California.

Mr. Whiturs believes that through the arts, song, dance, and drama one can communicate in a way that all can understand, Mr. Whiturs started the company Nia Dance Theatre in Dallas Texas 8 years ago before he moved to Chicago Illinois where he met Mr. Taron Webster who was the director of a company called Happy which means HIV/AIDS Prevention Protecting Yourself. The two companies merged to serve in a way of educating the youth as well as the adults in the African American communities. His goal was to dispel the fears and educate.

Mr .Whiturs continues to do the work necessary here in Dallas Texas. He is persistent in being a voice through the arts to fight injustices in communities everywhere. Mr. Whiturs knows that he cannot do it alone. He is a firm believer that It takes a whole village to raise a child, even the child within ourselves.

THE FUTURE

HappyNia Dance Theatre continues to perform and partner with organizations both nationally and internationally. In the coming months, they will partner with AIDS Walk in Dallas, TX and The Gospel Connection in Milan, Italy to continue spreading awareness and healing through the arts to people across the world.
