A Newsletter for Members and Friends of the Museum of Science

Look Inside Yourself Like Never Before! Our newest blockbuster exhibition reveals the human body at every stage of life.

Visitors to Tokyo’s National Science Museum in 1995 were treated to an unprecedented experience— a gallery of real human specimens that showed the inner workings of the human body in intricate detail. The debut of BODY WORLDS marked the birth of a phenomenon that continues to enthrall

and educate today. It’s the world’s most-visited traveling exhibition (seen by more than 47 million people), and now you can experience a new chapter, Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life, opening at the Museum June 16 (member preview June 15)!

Breathtaking Biology If you saw the BODY WORLDS exhibit that was hosted by

the Museum more than a decade ago, you’re still in for a truly

life-changing experience. For the first time, you’ll see how

your body changes through the years—from infancy to old

age, and as it grows, matures, peaks, and finally, wanes.

More than 100 real human specimens, including whole-body

plastinates, healthy and diseased organs, and individual

tissues, demonstrate the complexity, resilience, and vulnerability

of the human body in distress, disease, and optimal health.

BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life Opens June 16 | Member Preview June 15

This exhibition is ideal for a school field trip!

For more information: mos.org/educators

Continued from cover

Among the full-body plastinates you’ll encounter: a man performing tai chi, a

swimmer, an acrobatic couple, football “gladiators,” a limber gymnast, and a

senior who walks with a cane. Other full-body displays thoughtfully illustrate the

unique details of bones, muscles, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, and organs.

Behind the Scenes

The human specimens are preserved through Plastination, a special technique

invented more than four decades ago by German anatomist and licensed

physician Gunther von Hagens when he was a resident and lecturer at

Heidelberg University’s Institute of Pathology and Anatomy. During the

process, natural body fluids are replaced with fluid plastics to provide the flex-

ibility and strength needed to maintain realistic forms for an unlimited period

of time without decaying. Dr. von Hagens and his wife Dr. Angelina Whalley

(BODY WORLDS curator) have perfected this procedure over the years.

The exhibited bodies and specimens come from donors who will them during

their lifetime through a program founded by von Hagens in 1982 and man-

aged since 1993 by the Institute for Plastination in Germany. The donors wish

to serve the BODY WORLDS mission “to inspire visitors to become aware of

the fragility of their bodies and to recognize the anatomical individual beauty

inside each of us.”

Remarkable Reality

The use of real bodies is a key element in making this exhibition so powerful.

The Museum has the privilege of offering you a chance to see real specimens

in a safe, educational environment. Authentic human bodies show details of

disease, physiology, and anatomy that cannot be captured by artificial models.

This is more than just a chance to discover what’s happening beneath the

surface. You’ll learn firsthand how poor health, good health, and lifestyle

choices shape your body. And you just might be inspired to make some

changes in your own life after you experience BODY WORLDS & The Cycle

of Life, on exhibit for a limited engagement, only at the Museum of Science!

Admission to this exhibition requires purchase of a separate timed ticket. Members receive a discount (details in calendar).

This exhibit perfectly complements the Museum’s many offerings celebrating human biology, including the Hall of Human Life, that help us all to connect to science and technology in a personal way.”

– Christine Reich Vice President of Exhibit Development and Conservation

CONTINUE YOUR EXPLORATION!

While you’re here, you can learn even more

about the human body by checking out

our engaging live presentations, special

BODY WORLDS-related programming,

and of course, our popular Hall of Human

Life. With more than 70 interactive

components, this exhibit is revolutionizing

how you engage with your biology and

Great Bear Rainforest Opens July 5 in Omni

There’s a place on Canada’s Pacific Coast where grizzlies

battle for the top fishing spots, 1,000-year-old trees nearly

reach the sky, humpback whales are seasonal visitors, and

traveling salmon and herring come to spawn. Get a front-row

seat to all the action with Great Bear Rainforest, opening July

5 in the Mugar Omni Theater, home to New England’s only

IMAX® Dome Screen.

Indigenous Guardians

Approximately the size of Ireland, the Great Bear Rainforest

is the world’s largest coastal temperate rainforest—a rare

environment type defined by mild temperatures and heavy

rainfall that is vanishing worldwide. “The First Nations people

are a big reason this wild and unchanged place still exists,”

says narrator Ryan Reynolds of Deadpool fame, who was born

near this natural wonder.

Reynolds is referencing the inhabitants who protect this area

they have called home since the most recent Ice Age. Among

them is Marven Robinson, assigned by an elder chief to look

after the rare spirit bear. This all-white subspecies of the black

bear is neither an albino nor related to the polar bear. The

film shows how Robinson guides his 12-year-old son Nelson

Untouched Natural Beauty Visit the home of a rare species in the new giant-screen film Great Bear Rainforest.

(whose native name translates to Baby Spirit Bear) so the

legacy of defense can continue.

Struggle and Reunion

One of the world’s 200 spirit bears is Mox, who struggles to

find food in her storm-destroyed territory. But you’ll cheer

when she finds food in an old home and is reunited with a

fellow spirit bear in an emotional Oscar-worthy scene. And

although the spirit bear is the film’s star, you’ll meet plenty

of other species that live, eat, and play in the air, land, and

sea of this special slice of Earth.

Director Ian McAllister hopes this film will give people a

sense “that ecological protection can be something exciting

and beautiful” and that “maybe some will also be inspired to

engage with the rainforest in their own way or to get involved

in environmental work.” Find your inspiration when the film

opens July 5.

Great Bear Rainforest is a Spirit Bear Entertainment film presented by Seaspan and directed by Ian McAllister, produced by Jeff Turner and executive produced by Kyle Washington and Byron Horner. Distributed by MacGillivray Freeman Films.

over $100,000 from hundreds of supporters,

including trustee Michael Bronner, who provided

a $50,000 matching gift. Individual gifts like the

ones we received are used to help develop new

exhibits and live presentations, feed our friends

in the Live Animal Care Center, and more. On this

day, almost 3,000 visitors enjoyed an assortment

of hands-on, math-themed activities throughout

the Museum to celebrate all the ways math pops

up in our everyday lives and the world around us!

1 Making an Impact Jeff Leiden, CEO of Vertex Pharmaceuticals

(shown with Gwill York, chair, Museum

board of trustees), accepted the 2019 Stars of

STEM award on behalf of the Boston-based

biotechnology company during the Museum’s

annual signature celebration. Vertex is

passionate about inspiring discovery and

innovation through medicine and shares our

commitment to inspire future scientists.

This year’s event gave attendees a chance

to experience the Museum through the eyes

of a child while raising funds for our

educational programs. Learn more about

Vertex and its commitment to the STEM

leaders of tomorrow at mos.org/stars-of-stem.

2 Planetarium Show Adds Pioneer’s Voice The Museum-produced Planetarium show

Destination Mars: The New Frontier was

recently updated with physician and NASA

astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison voicing a fictional

astronaut traveling to Mars. The first woman

of color to travel to space, Jemison is a leader

across multiple industries and an advocate

for human space exploration. “We wrote this

script with her voice and pioneering role

in space travel specifically in mind,” says

Planetarium director Dani LeBlanc. “And

we’re thrilled that we share the same mission

and goals of connecting people to space.”
