Summer is here and our community looks great. Everyone has been working hard these past months in preparation for the 2011 season so we can all enjoy an excellent summer of lake, beach and recreation activities. Fawn Lake is the best it has been in years. Without the debris and weeds, it really shines. The natural lake management plan which began with the Fall draw down has transformed Fawn into an excellent recreational asset, chemical-free. I encourage everyone to use the community launch at Inverness Court and discover Fawn Lake. The beach and playground have been replenished with sand and new picnic tables and grills are being installed. Picnic tables also will be installed at the South Beach Pavilion. The office, lodge, and other community buildings are being repaired and painted by the Maintenance Dept. and the wellhead area next to the restaurant has been resurfaced to better protect our water as recommended by DEP. This summer work will be done to fill the cracks in our roads and extend their life. And on July 4 we will unveil the new flagpole and memorial park at South Beach at a 10:00 am service. Still to be resolved is the water situation at the Firehouse. The water well has been brined because of its location to the maintenance salt shed and the water is not drinkable. Spring water dispensers are currently used; drilling a new well is being investigated. We are fortunate to be able to accomplish so much and fully fund our operations, given the poor state of the economy. The just concluded fiscal year saw costs up in employee health insurance, gasoline, fuel surcharges for garbage services, and other areas. Revenues were down with rising foreclosures and delinquencies. The new fiscal year started very well in terms of members paying their dues, so our outlook is cautiously optimistic. By holding the line on expenses, we should be in good shape this time next year. The Board of Directors has been busy in other areas as well. We have changed the volunteer activities of the community, particularly involving the keeping of funds. For many years all volunteer activities were paid out of the volunteer line in our community budget with oversight by the Treasurer. Several years ago a separate cash fund was maintained off-line from regular treasury activities. The Board has ended this practice and has restored the volunteer services to their traditional role out of the Beach and Recreation Dept. The Board has also streamlined administration operations, with a staff of three accomplishing what used to be done by four. The busy start of the fiscal year in June when members pay their dues was handled very well by the office staff. We are lucky to have such dedicated employees in the office, maintenance, security, and beach/recreation departments. Security ReportEight Ways You Can Help SecurityThis Summer

The ice and snow are gone, thesummer is here, and Gold Key’s SecurityDepartment beefs up for the season. Butwe can’t be successful without the eyesand ears of the members. How can youhelp the Security Dept. secure thecommunity this summer?

Here are eight ways you can help:1. Call Security whenever necessary,

24/7. The number is: 686-3636. We arehere to serve the members.

2. Get your vehicles registered anddisplay the GKL sticker. Have yourguests register for Guest Passes in theoffice. This is the only way we canreadily identify who should be in ourcommunity and who should not.

3. Obey the road rules. Be on thelook-out for members walking, bikeriding, and playing near the road. Don’tspeed!

4. Report incidents you witnessimmediately. The quicker we learn of theproblem, the quicker we can resolve it.

5. Make sure your vehicle sticker isvisible when entering the community. Ifit is old, come into the office and get anew one.

6. Do not use Turf Rd. We have beensuccessful keeping non-members fromentering our community, but now ourneighbors are doing the same to us. GoldKey does not own the road past the gateand traveling on it is trespassing. AndSecurity has no authority in incidents thathappen outside of our community. Thebest advice is not to use Turf Rd.

7. Always have your member/guestbadge visible when at communityamenities.

8. Let the Security Dept. or Boardknow of any security issue or suggestionyou have.Enjoy the Summer!Francis RuggieroDirector of Security

updating the Employee Handbook and, thissummer, will be evaluating all regularemployees for budgeted bi-annual raises.

We have had to deal with many culvertproblems, including member andcommunity lots. It is the responsibility ofevery member to clean their culvert. Afailing culvert can mean the damage of aneighbor’s property. Fortunately mostmembers have been cooperative, but fineshave been issued. Gold Key will beworking on its own culverts and ditches thissummer.

Lastly, extra effort has been made to getthe word out about vacancies on the Boardof Directors. This August five positions willbe filled in the annual election. We haveadvertised this fact on the TV channel, GoBoard, and in the newsletter. Hopefully ourefforts will yield many good candidatesinterested in continuing Gold Key’sprogress. Make sure you vote.

I hope you and your family have anenjoyable summer!

Francis Ruggiero, President

From The Treasurer’s DeskAs I write this article, our fiscal year 2010/11 is not complete. However, we find

ourselves relying on next year’s income to finish this year. While miscellaneousincome is some $20,000 behind what we projected, dues income is substantiallyshort of projections. We have many homes currently in foreclosure where banks andmortgage companies have not as yet paid us. Others have vacated their homeswithout forwarding addresses and, while foreclosures will eventually occur and wewill be paid, that will not happen for many months. Others have their homes listedfor sale and will pay us at closing. All this has left a large gap between anticipatedincome and what has been received.

We currently have a reserve fund and all our bills have been paid. Our auditorwill provide us with a final report for the year ending May 31, 2011 and this will beavailable at our August meeting. This has been our most difficult year since I wasfirst elected to your Board in 1999 and we continue to be in good financial shape.

In the May 19, 2011 edition of thePike County Dispatch appeared aninterview by AOCA with DistrictMagistrate Alan B. Cooper concerningcommunity associations. According toMr. Cooper, community association lawin Pike and Wayne counties is differentthan in other parts of the state in that wecontinue to own our roads rather thantownships taking over the roads. He wenton to say that if a member has a legalright to use that private road, thatmember has an obligation to pay his/herfair share.

Communities can go back 20 years tocollect dues and if not paid we can gothrough District Court, obtain a lien, andseize personal property and, if we use aSheriff’s Office, seize bank accounts.

Loose dogs off a member’s propertywithout a leash is a crime. ATV trafficon a community road is a trespassingoffense subject to his court and a $300fine plus expenses and up to 90 days injail.

Your Gold KeyAddressBy Francis Ruggiero

In April Gold Key members werenotified that the Pike County 911 and theU.S. Postal Service had changed ouraddresses from the current box address toa 911 address. In one year, mailaddressed the current way without the911 address will not be delivered.

The Board is recommending thatwhen possible members use a four-lineaddress as follows:1. Line One — Your Name2. Line Two — Your current box address3. Line Three — Your 911 Street Address4. Line Four — City/State/ZIP

For example:

Mr. Joe Goldkey2121 Gold Key Estates100 East Lake DriveMilford, PA 18337

It is critical that the 911 address lineappear in the line immediately abovecity/state/zip. If you can only use a threeline address (for instance, on yourtelephone bill), then only use the 911address.

By including your current box addresson the second line, you guarantee themailman will know where to place yourmail.

The Board will keep you updated onthis matter as implementation progresses.

ObservationsThe winter of 2011

was a good one for thosewho enjoy the snow andcold. There werenumerous opportunities toappreciate the beauty ofsnow falling during astorm and the cold winterair that eventuallyfollows. There was abountiful amount of snow and coldduring the winter of 2011.

There were plenty of birds at GoldKey feeders. Suet feeders wereparticularly active due to the coldtemperatures. A pair of Yellow BelliedSap Suckers stayed all winter. Therewere no winter migrations of Redpolls orPine Siskin noted this year. Otherwise, the standard two dozen different types ofbirds were observed using feeders.Excluding raptors…

The spring bird migration started inMarch. Birds that left our area last fallare now returning to nest. Some warblerspecies are just passing through tobreeding areas further north. The firstEastern Phoebe arrived late March. ThePhoebe is the first fly catcher to returneach spring to Gold Key. The EasternPhoebe has a very distinct call…Theyshout their name... Phoebe! Listen forthem… Common Crackles and Red-Wing Black-birds were the next migrantbirds to return. Turkey Vultures alsoarrived in April. Bald Eagles weresighted on many occasions within GoldKey in April/May. Osprey was alsosighted.

Vocalizations of Spring Peepers werenoted as anticipated in late March.Arrival of the Spring Peepers is a suresign of changing seasons! Other frog andtoad vocalizations were noted comingfrom Green and Bullfrogs. NorthernWater Snakes were observed along thelakeshore. Snakes are harmless. Pleasejust give them some space.

Black bears were regularly sighted inApril and May. On occasion a pack ofcoyotes have been heard in the earlymorning hours. Skunk, Raccoon, andOpossum are around; rabbits and a fewblack squirrels have been sighted. BlackSquirrels are a color phase of the GreySquirrel.

Breeding populations of Large MouthBass were sighted in April/May along theshallow lakeshores of Autumn and FawnLake. Large populations of spawningshiners were observed in the streamoutflow of Fawn Lake in early May.

Gold Key BirdWalksThe Gold Key

Lake andEnvironmentCommitteesponsored a seriesof spring birdwalks within ourcommunity in2011. We walkedthe vicinity of South Beach and the“Misty Cove” area near the Gold KeyLake Dam. The group enjoyedidentifying many resident birds and a fewearly migrants. The best birding day waswhen three mature Bald Eagles flew overthe Gold Key Dam area at tree topheight! We all shared in some goodtimes in the woods. The birds below wereobserved over the three different birdwalks.1. Canada Goose2. Mallard Duck3. Wild Turkey4. Killdeer5. Bald Eagle
