Potholes in roads, toilet paper at Portman, storm-water flow, and new housing in Lakeside were among some of the topics brought to the mayor’s attention. The meeting format to everyone’s surprise

was one-on-one with the mayor. Others in the room didn’t necessarily know the issues of concern from their neighbors. The mayor took notes so she can address the comments in the future.

Lakeside/Lester Park has had several motels and places of lodging over the years. Some buildings were only plans and never were built such as Image 1 planned to be near railroad the tracks near 60th Ave. E. The image to the right (Image 2) was built in 1889 at 6003 London Road. The architect was Oliver Traphagen. The veranda faced Lake Superior. The hotel was destroyed due to a fire March 30, 1897.

Mayor Comes To Lakeside Mayor Emily Larson was inaugurated as the mayor of Duluth on January 4, 2016. She received 72% of the votes from the fall election. Mayor Larson, and the new District 1 City Councilor Gary Anderson were set up at Portman May 10 to receive comments from the community as part of City Hall in the City. Over 40 people turned out to express their concerns or compliments to the mayor or councilor. The new fire chief and parks manager were also present as well as a few other city officials.

food made by the diverse local people. I’ve since explored finding a local organization for my heritage. I’m joining the Italian American Club of Duluth. I’m half Italian and half Luxembourg heritage. I haven’t seen sign of a Luxembourg Club in Duluth. The Swedish Cultural

THE SUMMER IS SHORT but we have more daylight hours to get outdoors. Catch a summer concert (see page 3 ad and page 7 listing). But, bring a blanket along. This spring I was invited to attend a Tartan Day celebration by the local Scottish Heritage Association. Held at the Kitchi Gammi Club it had a program lasting over two hours with music, dancers in folk attire, and food, including Scotch eggs. That event inspired us to travel to

Kimberly Rines opened The Grooming Shack at 4711 E. Superior St. She has been involved in grooming pets in Duluth and Seattle since 1994. Her business offers full service grooming for dogs and cats by appointment. Nail trims, facial scrubs, shampoo, including skunk shampoo, is available. Brian hales from a small town in southeastern Minnesota called Hayfield. He came to Duluth for graduate school work with geology Professor George Rapp and stayed in Duluth following school. He worked as an archeologist for the Superior National Forest and spent time in the eastern half of the Boundary Waters with a work crew to look for artifacts prior to ground disturbing activities, such as before portage maintenance, trenching for a prescribed burn or digging a latrine. After leaving the Forest Service he began his own carpentry business, Glass Oak, LLC, where he builds pergolas to bookshelves to cupboards or drawers. He has also been renovating his family’s 1885

home in Lakeside where he lives with his wife Shannon and young daughter.

The family enjoys living in the neighborhood of Lakeside/Lester Park and being close to Lake Superior and just a hop, skip and a jump from Brighton Beach. With grocery and other shops nearby Lakeside was their choice for living and raising their family.

Brian goes winter camping near Sawbill each year and in the summer canoes when he can on parts of the Boundary Waters he hadn’t been through with his archeology work. He is fascinated with geology and teaches community education classes that contain field trips exploring local

geology. He is offering summer geology classes with field trips through the Duluth Community Education program at Ordean East.

Brian lives in a house built in 1885 in Lakeside and added stained glass and wood cabinetry he made. He teaches community

education geology classes and gives presentations on local geology to groups.

Brian taps maple trees in his yard and uses his scrap wood from

wood projects to boil it down.

Carillon Chimes at Faith

Have you heard the bells near Glenwood and 51st? It wasn’t actual bells but rather recordings of bells being played via specialized tapes. Lakeside resident, Jergen Fuhr, has been the operator of the “Carillon Chimes” at Faith Lutheran Church in Lakeside over the last 40+ years. He is holding an example of a tape used that has the sounds of a chiming bell. The church has played a collection of bell tapes with hymns or holiday music selections. As mentioned on the front page, Faith Lutheran Church is closing in June.
