Heather Cutknife knows a thing or two about art. Heather constructed an entire set for the “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead” for the Rabid Marmot Production’s season finale at the TransAlta Arts Barns. Cutknife said “I did all nighters for a week” “I was building it in my spare bedroom. I couldn’t get a sense of scale. But it looks pretty good” and “It’s a really repetitive process. My fingers were really really rough when I was finished”. She used basic glue and acrylic paint for most of the set. Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead is about a futuristic look into the teen years of Peanut star Charlie brown and friends discussing topics such as suicide, drugs and homophobia. Executive producer Nicholas Mather said “Cutknife’s set fits perfectly with the drama inspired by the cartoon character Charlie brown. Cutknife who goes to school in Edmonton and is from Samson, also went to school in Paris France. Cut-knife studied from 2006-2010 earning a BFA for her hard work.

ure and adjacent 3.5m of pipeline on either side of failure which did not indicate further visual internal corrosion issuesThe pipeline was immediately isolated and depres-sured following the notification of leak. The area was fenced off from public and a hydrovac unit on site to remove all free liquids on May 8, 2012. The preliminary soil testing and excavation of affected area began May 9, 2012 – NOTE all excavated con-taminated soil was placed on matting on site pend-ing analysis to confirm suitable disposal site.Approximate 35m x 35m area of farm land was af-fected by some pooled liquid and soil staining due to presence of condensate liquids in pipeline.

At approximately 12:00pm on May 8, 2012, an area farmer contacted CNRL operators in Bonnie Glen area and notified of a suspected pipeline leak at the 10-12-044-24W4M locations. AltaGas field opera-tions and crews were immediately notified by CNRL operations to isolate the affected section of line and ensure all production tied-in to that pipeline was shut-in. Emergency Response Program (ERP) was initiated by AltaGas from its head office in Calgary office to coordinate the response and ensure all required communication was made to affected stakeholders. The pipeline failure was suspected to be due to internal corrosion. The initial review of the failed pipeline segment indicated a single point of fail-

Road repairs begin

Public Works have been busy as of late. Public Works are getting a new grater and it will be delivered on June 10. But before all that they started working on the roads and on April 23rd they were patching the soft spots on 3-5mile. On April 30th they started on

bridge road up to Cranes Crossing and laid down clay followed by gravel which in total cost when up to $10,000 for gravel/mixture. On May 11th they fin-ished up to cranes crossing and started to work to-wards the highway from the crossing. What’s the plan after cranes crossing? Begin work-ing from the highway starting on 3mile and work their way to 4, 5, and 6mile, the “main roads” are the priority. Samson energy is helping to haul gravel with 2 of their trucks which makes a total of 5 trucks and 2 graters with Public Works and as stated earlier an additional grater coming on June 10th. This might be the first time the roads are being reconstructed since they got put in for the oil companies in the 1950s.

Maskwacis Minor Hockey League This year has been a positive one for the association, due to Samson Cree Nation’s generous hospitality in taking on the start up costs of the league fees and insurance for the kids. They also kept the arena run-ning for the year to ensure the program had a home. The association is forever thankful for all that Samson has done.We had 19 teams, consisting of 358 players register for the year with 192 coming from Samson, compet-ing in the North Central Minor Hockey Association. The majority of the coaches and managers were also from Samson as well. This year we had the midget A team win the league championship. At the Alberta Treaty Hockey Association Champion-ships we sent 19 teams. We won the banners in the Bantam female, Peewee A, and Bantam A divisions. We also sent 14 teams to the Alberta Native Provin-cials and came out of that tournament with the Pee-wee and Bantam Eagle banners.Other things to note during the season were hav-ing 4 boys selected to be flag bearers at the open-ing ceremonies of the IIHF World Juniors Champion-ship held in Edmonton and Calgary. Cole Brown and Ethan Smallboy were selected from our Atom A team and Nolan Twins and Jayden Wildcat were selected from the Atom B team. These were 4 selections out of 29 total from the province. They were on the ice be-fore the games and had 2 tickets to watch the game afterwards. They also got the chance to meet a few teams and skate in Rexall.Theoren Fleury was the special guest for our year end banquet. He signed whatever he could, posed for all pictures that came his way and mingled with everyone there. The Olympic Gold Medalist and Stanley Cup Winner delivered a powerful and mov-ing speech on working hard for your goals, stand up to abuse and to never quit before the miracle. The

metis member is truly a walking living miracle and an inspiration hockey players and abuse victims all over the world. He applauded our success on having a program with over 300 youth and how the whole community is in support. We also honored our local talent at this event. These members of the community have gone on to Jr A or higher levels of hockey. A few to mention are Raylene Cutknife (Samson) played with Mount Royal College ACAC, Suede Omeasoo (Samson) played with Calgary Mustangs Jr A, Devin Buffalo (Samson) played Flin Flon Bombers Jr A*, Thomas Ward-Cardinal (Ermine-skin) played Grand Prairie Storm Jr A**, Keaton White (Ermineskin) played Olds Grizzlies Jr A, Emery White (Ermineskin) played Olds Grizzlies Jr A, Dean Dion Jr (Samson) played Battleford Northstars Jr A, Brody Raine (Louis Bull) played Quebec Remparts QMJHL, Austin Buffalo (Samson) played Thunder Bay Golden Eagles Jr A, Huston Buffalo (Samson) played Brooks Bandits Jr A, Ryan Johnson (Samson) played Coquit-lam Express Jr A, and Stephen Wagner (Ermineskin) played Denver Pioneers NCAA***. I know there’s a lot more and we are searching for them. We will honor all of them by hanging their respective jerseys in the arena for all the youth to look up to. These are our local heroes.*Devin Buffalo won rookie of the year in the SJHL.** Thomas Ward-Cardinal, at 19 years old, signed a professional contract with HK Acroni Jesenice in Eu-rope.***Stephen Wagner was drafted by the St. Louis Blues 157th overall in the 1996 NHL Draft. He mentors our goalies throughout the year, giving back to the com-munity.It was a long and challenging year but a successful one. And we look forward to next year.

Samson Cree Nation Chief and Council are work-ing diligently and collectively in strengthening ac-countability by providing updates to the Nation on a monthly basis. These updates will include a listing of attendees at Regular Council Meetings. Regular Council Meeting was called to order at 9:41 a.m. with Chief Marvin Yellowbird presiding as Chair-man. The agenda was adopted with additions based on business arising from March 2012 Regular Council Meeting.

Strategic Planning: Chief and Council will facilitate their own planning session to prioritize and provide direction to Nation programs and services for the re-mainder of their term.Assembly of Alberta Treaty Chiefs (AOTC): Chief and Council abstained from AOTC Resolution 15-03-12#003R; based on conflict of interest with Montana Nation being recognized as a sister Nation to Sam-son. Jurisdiction issues need to be resolved locally and Nationally before any decisions can be made on this matter. Currently the case is before the courts since the Province of Alberta regulates the tobacco industry.

PAGE 9 ACIMOWIN

National Youth Crime Prevention (NYCP): The Four Chiefs and one technician from each Band will be ap-pointed as the steering Committee. Their role is to develop a proposal accessing these grants to reduce gang activity within the Four Nations. Community Mobilization Program: The HUB program is a unique program that assists in reducing crime within Communities. All programs and services work collectively to address social issues by working with families and children who are at risk. National Child Benefit Reinvestment Plan: A proposal will be submitted to AANDC to enhance services for Nation members. These funds are allocated to the Socio Economic Development pillar to assist families with parenting and personal development skills that strengthen capacity building and independence.Samson Tribal Enterprises: The plan is to liquidate off-reserve land owned by Samson Cree Nation. Pro-ceeds from the sale will be held in abeyance until Samson Cree Nation Chief and Council make a final decision. All Nation matters were dealt with and the Regular Council Meeting was adjourned at 3:20 p.m.Note: May 8, 2012 Regular Council Meeting update will appear in the June 2012 Newsletter. The June Regular Council Meeting update will appear in the July 2012 newsletter. The reasoning is to wait for formal adoption of minutes by Samson Cree Nation Chief and Council prior to submission for the news-letter. You are welcome to request for clarity on all items from the Samson Cree Nation Chief and Coun-cil and the Band Administrator.
