SHOUT OUT TO RON!

We are all grateful for having a roof over our heads, but let’s not forget those new roofs

were the result, in part, of Ron Kennedy’s helpful hand. Ron graciously accepted the

position of liaison between Southbrook residents and Accurate Construction. Any

concern on the part of the homeowner or Accurate was directed straight to Ron, and

he always responded quickly to resolve the issue. That’s where Ron excels.

This might be due to Ron’s training and career as a police officer, combined with his

experience as a roofer, too. Actually, Ron has never said “no” when asked to help the

community.

Accurate was good, but Ron was great, and those now shouting from their rooftops are

just showing their appreciation for their beautiful homes and neighborhood to match.

Janis and John Ulerys 9124 Duckhorn Drive

While they may be new to Southbrook, the Ulerys are not new to

Charlotte, for they have called the Queen City their home for 40

years. Let it be known though, they are a couple of transplanted

Buckeyes having relocated here from Columbus, Ohio. Janice

and John have 4 children (shown here with daughter, Lisa.)

All four offspring reside in Charlotte. They also boast of having

6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

WELCOME NEW RESIDENTSA WARM AND HEARTY WELCOME TO OUR NEW NEIGHBORS

Lynn Whitehurst 8606 Tayland Cellars Court

Another Buckeye, Lynn hails from Sylvania, Ohio. The move

here was prompted by her son who also lives in the area. As a real

estate broker, he played a big part in selecting Southbrook for his

mother. Lynn is a retired practical nurse. Moving to Charlotte

meant leaving behind in Ohio another son, a daughter, and five

grandchildren. Joining Lynn in her move to Southbrook was Lacy,

her Cavipoo (a designer mix of King Charles Cavalier and poodle).

Drink in the Beauty

On a warm, Tuesday

afternoon in April,

approximately 20

residents of Southbrook

gathered at the pool

for a delightful afternoon of art

instruction and wine. This activity

was sponsored by the Southbrook

Social Committee under the

leadership of Julie McNally.

The instructor for this art activity was South-

brook resident, Anita Brown who previously

attended several “art and wine” activities herself.

In addition, she has taught art classes to small

groups for several years. Anita led the Southbrook

participants through the step-by-step process of

creating a flower painting using acrylic paints. Her

instruction included techniques such as blending,

shading, and brush strokes. Attendees included

those with artistic talents as well as those with

no artistic ability whatsoever, and Anita showed

infinite patience with all (for which we are grate-

ful!). She assisted participants as they delved into

their inner Rembrandt and came out with some

pretty good results (note picture of Anita with

Judy Bobrek and Judy’s finished product). As the

instruction progressed through the afternoon, wine

was served, and needless to say fun was had by all.

We encourage all residents of Southbrook to take

advantage of the Social Committee activities; it’s

a great way to get to know your neighbors while

having lots of fun!

SOUTHBROOK ART CLASS

What’s On Your Nightstand? THE ART OF NEIGHBORING Jim Pathak, Dave Runyon

O nce upon a time, people knew their neighbors. They talked to them, had cook-outs

with them, and even went to church with them. In our time of unprecedented

mobility and increasing isolationism, it’s hard to make lasting connections with

those who live right outside our front door. We have hundreds of “friends” through online social

networking, but we often don’t even know the full name of the person who lives right next door.

This unique and inspiring book asks the question: What is the most loving thing I can do for

the people who live on my street or in my apartment building? Through compelling true stories

of lives impacted, the authors show readers how to create genuine friendships with the people

who live in closest proximity to them. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter make this

book perfect for small groups or individual study.

Meet Glenn

Q What is your hometown, Glenn? A. Massapequa, New York

Q How long have you resided in Southbrook? A. Fourteen months. However, I have been a resident of Charlotte for 42 years. Prior to my move to Southbrook I owned a home in Piper Glen.

Q Care to tell us a little about your family? A. My folks live in California. I have a daughter in Virginia Beach and son in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. He’s an aeronautical engineer. My daughter is married to a Navy aviator. He’s on his 6th tour in Iraq and is probably bombing ISIS as we speak. As for me, I am single; recently divorced.

Q What about you? Are you retired? A. I am self-employed. I’m in the Art business, and have been since 1985. I am a design artist.

Q Will you share with us about your company? A. My company is called Absolutely Picture Perfect. We install and relocate art collections and pictures. I am a professional art handler with more than 20 years’ experience in the field. My clients range from single condo owners to major corporations. We provide the technical expertise and vision to help them make their spaces look their best.

Q We have been told you have a passion for boating, is that right? A. Well, it’s boating and bicycling actually. In the last six years I cycled across four European countries. Italy, Germany, France and Austria.

Q We would like to hear more about those trips. Perhaps we can persuade you to share that experience in a fu-ture issue of our newsletter. Will you tell us now, though, about the time you spend on the water? A. I have just returned from a three-day trip out in the ocean in my kayak. I have three kayaks in my garage. One is for lakes and rivers, one is for salt water and one is for ocean long distance.

Q How long have you been kayaking? A. On and off for over forty years. Since Christmas, I have done a number of two- and three-day weekend trips to Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, North Carolina and the Inter-coastal Waterway.

Q Do you venture out alone on these trips or are there other kayak enthusiasts who accompany you? A. I sure do. I am in a group called the Catawba Paddlers. We travel a five-state area. I also belong to a group out of Georgia and another from Asheville. And that’s pretty much all I do. Well, that and cycling.

Q With all the time you spend on the ocean and cycling is there anything else that still remains on your personal bucket list? A. If all goes as planned, next summer I am going to kayak 8 or 10 national parks.

Q That sounds exciting. What are your plans for this kayak adventure? A. I plan to leave in late August next year. I will be traveling with a friend. We will be hauling four kayaks by car, two each. We plan to visit Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah. Most likely that will take us to 8-10 parks. We just plan to wing it as we move along, no plans to be in any special park on a certain date. We plan on tent camping or using hotels as needed. We plan to be gone about 4 weeks.

Q Can’t wait to hear all about that. What would you say is something people might never guess about you? A. Possibly this- I started riding motorcycles around 1971. Starting in 1977 till 2005 I motorcycled 48 states and I motorcycled every Canadian province.

Q If you could, what might be one thing you would change or add to the Southbrook Community? A. I wouldn’t change a thing. I think our Board of Directors do a great job managing Southbrook. I love it here.

NOTE: Lightly edited for brevity and clarity.

Q What is your hometown, Jerri? A. I am a twin and we were born in Newton, N.C., a small town near Hickory and the county seat of Catawba County. My sister and I were adopted at age six and we lived in Virginia.

Q And how long have you lived in Charlotte? A. More than 40 years, I guess.

Q Where did you live before you relocated to South-brook? A. Right down the road In Union County. I owned a home in the Somerset development. The home was sold while I was hospitalized for a seven month period.

Q We note that you are dependent on a wheel chair and walker. Is that the aftermath of your hospitalization? A. Yes. I had major surgery to replace a mitral valve. The surgery itself went well, but I was near death a couple of times and had to be resuscitated. My organs were shutting down; I needed to have a pacemaker installed and I was on dialysis for nine months. But now, thankfully, I am managing pretty well. I am divorced and my ex has returned to his home in South America. My daughter, though, is living with me temporarily. She attends Appalachian State, but she took a year off to care for me.

Q How long have you resided in Southbrook? A. I moved here about two years ago.

Q Why did you choose Southbrook? A. I was familiar with Southbrook years ago, and might have moved here then, but my daughter was in middle school at that time and she was reluctant to move and leave her friends behind. Southbrook is the perfect location for me as it is near my doctors and I know the area, so it’s really ideal.

Q You started to tell us a little bit about your family. You have a daughter? A. Yes. She’s twenty-two and attends Appalachian State. She took a leave of school to take care of me and my cats. At one time I had eight cats. I required the use of a handicap van and she drove that. I get around pretty well by myself now. I have trouble walking, but I can drive.

Q We understand that you operate a couple of hair salons. Will you tell us about that? A. Yes, I have three Great Clips franchises. One is on Johnston Road, one in Fort Mill, and another right down the road in Tega Cay, South Carolina.

JERRI ZENA TAPIA 8603 Bookwalter Court

Jerri shown with her two feline friends, Raleigh and Baby Doll

Q How long have you been involved with that business? Do you participate in the active operation of your shops? A. I began franchising in 1999. I have never done hair myself; I’m a C.P.A. The salons are just an investment. Each shop has a manager and many of my staff have been with me for years. I have very little turnover. As a former C.P.A. I do all the books, of course.

Q Interesting. Where did you attend school? A. I went to Salem College in Winston Salem for two years and transferred to North Carolina State where I graduated with a degree in Sociology. I then attended Lenoir Rhyne in Hickory, N.C. and received a degree in accounting.

Q What do you like best about being a franchisee of three Great Clips salons? A. Getting to know the girls who work for me and interacting with them. One of them, Debbie, has been with me for twenty years.

Q Let’s change the subject for a moment. What did you want to be when you were a kid? A. (Long Pause) I guess it would be that I wanted to grow up, get married, and have a family.

Q What do you like to do in your free time? A. I don’t have any hobbies. I am in my office every night until about eight.

Q No hobbies? A. Not anymore. At one time I was in to Latin dancing.

Q If you could, what would be the one thing you would like to add or change to Southbrook as a community? A. I wish that they could change my driveway so that it wasn’t so steep (laugh).

Think PawsitiveMy neighbor can only be described as a ragamuffin. And that conjures

up a fairly negative picture, I know.

One dictionary, in fact, defines ragamuffin as “a sorry creature in

rags”. But before you start mumbling, “There goes the neighborhood”, let me

explain. My neighbor resides at 11709 Silverado Lane. Because he is housebound,

however, you may never actually see him, unless he’s peering out the front window.

Fudge, is his name and I can tell you firsthand he’s quite handsome. He’s also

friendly, talkative, and appears to sport a very impressive coat. So, he doesn’t fit

the common definition, and that’s because he’s a ragamuffin; the feline variety.

Fudge was acquired by Melissa McCauley (the very talented graphic artist for

our newsletter) from a friend who traveled too much to give him the love and

attention he deserved.

Melissa tells us that she had a cat ten years ago, and pets were always a part of

her childhood in upstate New York, but Fudge is more like a dog than a cat. He

comes when called, he enjoys meeting people, he’s very friendly and follows her

everywhere. He is constantly by her side.

As Ragamuffins are one of the largest cat breeds, we’re talking double Fudge here.

And Melissa thinks that’s just purrrfect.
