Message from the Chamber...Dear readers-It is hard to believe a month has gone by so quickly! We passed the Guilderland Central School District Budget (congrats to all you moms with fall kindergarteners!) and the trees, fl owers and lawns are much improved! I am now looking forward to summer, but we are so busy at the chamber that I hope I can squeeze in some vacation time!
The two biggest events we have planned for summer are Restaurant Week from July 20-25, and a new and fun community event called Hop-n Shop. Hop-n-Shop will run from July 1-Sept 1, and includes any chamber business who wants to be in the game. The game is for community members to go around to participating stores and businesses and get the game card signed-the more places the better. Game cards will be available at the
Guilderland Chamber in Star Plaza, and at all participating businesses. No purchase is necessary, and at the end, you turn your card in to enter a drawing for one of the 2 top prizes, including a fl at screen TV!
We are also planning our second annul restaurant week, and have eleven restaurants, including Mezza Notte, Athos, Siver Hills, Aromi D’Italia, Hana, peaches and more! For $18.03, you get a three course meal! Menus from participating restaurants are available on www.tasteofguilderland.com or at the chamber offi ces. Bring your Hop-n Shop card in while you are there!!
I’d also like to say congratulations to our Annual Dinner awardees and encourage you to also stop by these places and check them out!
Have a great June!Kathy BurbankExecutive Director, Guilderland Chamber of Commerce

Andrea Fortuin, Director of Orenda Yoga and Healing Arts, Guilderland
Center is heading to Washington DC. She will spend 3 weeks in June interning at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, teaching Integrative Restoration, a meditative form of yoga, to active duty combat soldiers diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Research programs using complimentary and alternative therapies have been ongoing. This particular approach is proving to be benefi cial in treating the symptoms of PTSD and TMI. The program at WRAMC is a model. After completing the 3-week internship in the Specialized Care Unit, Fortuin intends to bring the program home to Albany.

GRIMM WITHDRAWSFROM SUPERVISOR RACE
I wanted to take this opportunity to speak directly to Guilderland residents
concerning my withdrawal from the town supervisor race.Given the town’s current political climate, a Grimm-Runion race this year would fracture the town no matter who wins. I feel this is not what’s best for the people of Guilderland. What’s best for Guilderland is a renewed focus on the issues people care most about --- easing our tax burden, improving the assessment process, mitigating traffi c problems, consistent zoning, more open government, and others. As a town board member, I will continue to ask the questions that need to be asked, hold elected offi cials accountable, and work to solve problems for my constituents.I am so grateful to the many people who supported my candidacy. Their faith in open and fair government is the foundation for my commitment to serving the public good.

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways or lateral curvature of the spine. It begins as a postural distortion and can become a permanent deformity. Allowed
to progress, it can interfere with bodily functions, effect physical appearance and even quality of life. There are three causes of scoliosis; congenital (genetic),habitual postural, and idiopathic (unknown). Regardless of the cause, early ACTIVE intervention, rather than a ‘wait and see’ approach is essential. Ifallowed to go its course, scoliosis will usually worsen. However, interventionwith proper spinal analysis, gently chiropractic care and postural retraining and strengthening exercises can produce a very different outcome- reducingor minimizing the curve, decreasing or stopping pain altogether and helping to maintain a stronger, healthier spinal structure for what lies ahead in their lives.
In 17 years of Chiropractic practice I have seen dozens of young people withscoliosis. Many have been told there is nothing to do except wait and see and then brace or consider surgery. Waiting is not treatment. Surgery has hugerisks. Chiropractic care is a proven safe and natural solution for scoliosis. There are documented cases of scolioses resolving, minimizing in degree or failing to progress as expected with nothing other than chiropractic care. Chiropractic adjustments address spinal subluxation (areas of the spine that are misaligned, fixated and interfering with proper nerve communication) which will help the structure and function of the spine. Specific exercisesdesigned for the individuals curve will strengthen and improve posture. Pain will be minimized or completely resolved. It makes my day when I hear ayoung girl say they are playing sports pain-free or that their latest set of x-rays showed no further progression of the curve or to see their pelvic tilt even out. I’ve seen it over and over again in my office.
With three young boys myself, I breathe a sigh of relief in the summer from the taxi service that is called Motherhood. However, summer is a greatopportunity to begin your child with scoliosis on a spinal care program. If your child has scoliosis or you notice a high shoulder or low hip on your child, or their shoes are wearing improperly, this can be a sign of spinal distortionthat can lead to scoliosis. Chiropractors like myself are uniquely educated to pick up the early warning signs of scoliosis before the curve even changes.
For further information or to schedule a consultation at no charge, please call The Spinal Wellness Center at 869-3415.
Dr. Noonan resides here in Guilderland with her husband David, who is also a Chiropractor, and her sons Connor, Noah and Aiden. She is a graduate of Guilderland High School, SUNY Cortland and New York Chiropractic College. She has served families in the community with chiropractic for over 17 years.

Roman Jewels has been a full service jeweler for over 16years in the city of Albany.
We specialize in 18k Italian gold jewelry that we directlyimport from Italy ourselves.
About 3 years ago, when the gold market started to spike, jewelry sales started to decline. We needed to dosomething to generate business, so we started advertising that WE BUY GOLD. It has been a true success. Having knowledge of all types of jewelry and also bringing in afull time coin expert, has given us an edge to the “buying”market. Recently, we’ve started buying antiques and collectibles and have a booth inside the Coxsackie Antique Center.
Never ever put your gold or valuables in an envelope and ship them out. National news channels have uncoveredthe scams and how you get so much less money thanbringing it to your local jeweler. You also can’t trust the “here today, gone tomorrow” buyers that rent out hotel rooms. Some of us locals have sent out spies and they payless than half of what we pay. We try to work on volume so that we can offer the best price in town. We evaluate each item by the piece. We don’t just melt every piece of beautiful or antique jewelry. It’s worth more than just scrap to us. Before you bring your gold anywhere else, at least let us evaluate it and give you a price at no cost.
We are open Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to5:00 p.m. and staying open until 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays. We also make house calls on Sundays by appointment outside the city of Albany.
Conveniently located at 1190 Western Avenue, across from The University at Albany.

Who Do You Trust When Selling Gold? GHS PARTNERS WITH GUILDERLAND POLICE DEPT.TO PRESENT RAPE AGGRESSION DEFENSE (R.A.D.)
PROGRAMFOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR GIRLS
GUILDERLAND, NY—Guilderland High School is teaming up with the members of the Guilderland Police Department to present an invaluable workshop for the young women of GHS: the nati onally-recognized Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) program. The program is open to all senior girls and is part of an ongoing transiti on program to prepare graduates for life beyond the halls of high school.
The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realisti c self-defense tacti cs and techniques—it is not a marti al arts course. Taught by nati onally certi fi ed R.A.D. instructors, the program is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, preventi on, risk reducti on and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.
To date, more than 35 seniors have signed up for the program. Guilderland High School Assistant Principal Lisa Pati erne, who organized the event for the school, hopes to off er additi onal sessions for both interested senior girls and female staff members later this spring.

Q Awith Pat Sunkes
Happy Homesitt ers
Q. What year did your business start?
I started placing my ideas into moti on in the Spring of 2008.
Q. How and why did you get into the business?
Aft er my reti rement, many of my friends and co-workers had become snowbirds seeking a warmer climate, only to return fi nding their homes not exactly how they left them. The unfortunate stories of storm damage, failed sum pumps, broken pipes and even criminal acti vity, prompted me to start my business of watching over and caring for these homes that were left unatt ended. Hence, a business that would babysit your vacant home.
Q. Do you have many regular customers?
I do have clients that travel very oft en and have used my services. Whether it be a vacati on, business trip or unexpected travel, short term or extended, they want someone to care for their most valuable asset.
Q. Are you known for anything special?
I treat and respect your home as if it were my own and I also off er on the spot repairs for minor problems. I can arrange to meet contractors, collect mail, shovel doorways, and prepare your home for your return. I off er several diff erent packages as well as customized programs that fi t the needs and requests of the homeowner. I run a professional, reliable, and insured service.
Q. What hours are you open?
Technically speaking, my business is a 24/7 operati on subject to emergency calls, sub-zero weather, storm issues, as well as night ti me visits.
Q. What do you love most about your business?
I love the sati sfacti on I receive when a client relates to me how relieved they feel when I’m watching their home. I take over their worries, and knowing their home is safe and secure, allows them to enjoy their ti me away. Your home is your castle, let us remove the hassle!
Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business?
My biggest challenge is exposure, either through adverti sing or word of mouth, to let people know that there is this type of service available, one that off ers peace of mind.
I have also reached out to vacant estates, and homes waiti ng for real estate transacti ons.
Q. What do you want the community to know about you?
I have spent my enti re life in the Capital Region. I know many people in the area and can provide several references. Id like people to know they can trust me watching over their most prized possession, their homes, in a caring way.
Q. Any customer stories to tell?
I have a not so funny story to tell that does have a humorous side to it and embraces why my service is so valuable.
A vacati oning homeowner returned to fi nd their home at a balmy 88º. The programmable thermostat batt ery had died and defaulted to 88º. Their shocking uti lity bill was more than enough to pay for several weeks of my services. The good news – their houseplants had grown several inches and bloomed earlier than expected. An expensive lesson learned!
My web site is www.happyhomesitt ers.com, or I can be reached by phone at 518-424-2632 and e-mail at happyhomesitt [email protected].

Guilderland Named One of the Best Communiti es for Music Educati on
The NAMM Foundation announced the results of its tenth annual “Best Communities for Music Education” survey, which acknowledges schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support of music education. The Guilderland Music Department is proud to announce that the Guilderland school district has again achieved this honor.
The designated programs exemplify community commitment to include music education as part of a quality education for all children. The NAMM Foundation and its music education advocacy efforts work to ensure that all children have access to quality music education programs that encourage lifelong participation in music making.
As the economy challenges state and local school budgets to adequately support education, the 124 school districts named by the NAMM Foundation demonstrate the unwavering commitment to provide music education for their students. The NAMM Foundation’s mission is to ensure that all children have access to quality music education programs that encourage lifelong participation in music making.
This year’s roster of musical schools represents 21 states with a record amount of communities from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Texas.
“The potential of music to help children reach their full development is understood by the school districts represented in this year’s survey results,” said Mary Luehrsen, executive director, NAMM Foundation. “We celebrate these communities that are committed to providing access to music education programs and bettering the lives of their students.”
Participants in the survey answered detailed questions about funding, enrollment, student/teacher ratios, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and other relevant factors in their communities’ music education programs. Research reveals strong correlations between quality music education in school and academic achievement. Students actively involved with music programs develop skills needed by the 21st century workforce, including critical thinking, creative problem solving, effective communication and team work.
Additional information is available from District Music Administrator, Lori Hershenhart at 861-8591 x1106 or the district website at www.guilderlandschools.org.

The Continuing French Presence in the Hud-son Valley
Long after French explorers and settlers followed trade routes through New York and beyond, traces of French culture can still be found right here in the Hudson Valley. The Guilderland Public Library is holding two programs and an exhibit that explore how and why this is so.
A Brief History of the French in North AmericaMany people in the Capital Region share common ancestry with early settlers of New France. On Wednesday, June 3, at 7 pm, Dr. Eloise Brière, professor of French at the University at Albany, will provide a capsule history of French exploration in the Northeast. She will show how descendants of the earliest settlers keep the French presence and culture alive in our area.
The French Language in the Northeast TodayEvery wondered why French sounds different in Montreal than in Paris? On Thursday, June 25, at 7 pm, Dr. Cynthia Fox, professor of French at the University at Albany, will explain the differences in the French language as it is spoken in France and as it contin-ues to be spoken even in our own area, revealing its roots in 17th century speech.
Cases in the lobby will feature a display by Professor Fox featur-ing photos and artifacts from Franco-Americans who continue to speak French as learned at home as the language was handed down from descendants of early settlers of New France.
Want to learn more about connecting your own heritage to early settlers of New France? Watch for upcoming programs fea-turing resources and tips for tracing back to the founding fathers and mothers of French North America.

Consumer Health Programs
Where’s Your “File of Life”?
Suppose, just suppose, the unthinkable happens: You’re home alone, and you have a serious health emergency. How will fi rst responders know what medication you’re taking, your special medical conditions, who your emergency contacts are, and – critically – what allergies you have?
That’s where the File of Life comes in. On Saturday, June 6, at 11 am, staff from the Western Turnpike Rescue Squad will be on hand to help you fi ll out a free File of Life form that you can keep on your fridge. This handy form (in a magnetic holder) lists all the medications you are currently taking and other pertinent medi-cal information. Should you have an emergency at home, rescue squad workers will have immediate access to this potentially life-saving information.
Drop in, spend 10 minutes with the Rescue Squad, and be pre-pared!
Memory and Aging: What's Normal, When to Worry, and What to Do
How many times have you walked upstairs to get something, only to stand in the middle of the room wondering what you wanted in the fi rst place? Or struggled to come up with someone’s name?
On Friday, June 5, at 3 pm, Gia M. LaRuffa, PhD, a local neuropsy-chologist in private practice who specializes in identifying cogni-tive impairment will talk about how aging affects memory. She’ll examine the links between depression and memory, medications and memory, and some mental and physical strategies for improv-ing memory.
If you’re at all worried about what you are forgetting, attend this afternoon program and have some of your questions answered. Call Adult Reference at 456-2400 x 7 to register.
Note: All Library events are free unless otherwise posted. The Guilderland Public Library is located at 2228 Western Avenue, Guilderland. Call 456-2400 x 12 for more information, or visit the Library's website at www.guilpl.org. Please e-mail any comments you have about the Library or its programs to [email protected].
