Welcome to June! We are officially half way through what it is turning out to be a very busy year. There are a few important items I would like to address as we open this months newsletter.

As the weather cools, let us be reminded of the need for warm clothing. Please take the time to check your loved ones wardrobe for appropriate winter clothing. A message from Bianca Ivancic Cont’d…

The Blakehurst Aged Care Centre community was a buzz with events, gatherings and cele-brations this month. The weather may be a get-ting a little cool outside, but there is definitely a large volume of warmth surrounding our facili-ty. With colourful decorations that never seemed to come down, it wasn’t difficult to find a great deal of laughter in the everyday hap-penings of an aged care community. I applaud those who continue to take the time to add vi-brancy and zing at every opportunity. Thank you.

On a serious note, I would like to remind all vis-itors to the facility of our residents safety. When exiting and entering our community, please check with staff first before letting any resident/s exit the front door. This topic will be discussed at the next Resident and Relative meeting in more detail.

We have many wonderful opportunities coming up in June to enjoy all that Blakehurst Aged Care Centre has to offer. If you require a little extra assistance to join in on the many social events and activities that occur throughout the month, please speak with a lifestyle or care team member and we will endeavour to help you every way we can. Please remember, all family members and carers are invited to pro-vide feedback, suggestions and comments at all times. We also encourage regular conversation in regards to the specific needs of your loved one. My door is always open. Until next time - Life is for Living. God Bless, Bianca Ivancic ESM

This month we took some time out to soak up the last of the Autumn sunshine. Heading to Como for a picnic was a wonderful adven-ture, with many excursion goers finding a moment to take a stroll amongst the natural landscape of the Como Reserve park. Residents enjoyed a lovely lunch and cold drink under the shade of a tall gum tree, while the rest of the world hurried along making the most of another busy work day. Days like this are the foundation of retire-ment living at its finest.

Well didn’t we have an absolute ball at Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. The facility was decked in all things 60s with a large cardboard combi becoming quite the HIT at this years event. Residents also en-joyed a delicious morning tea as vinyl rec-ords hung from the ceiling and daisy chains graced the tables. Although this event is designed to raise research funds for an illness that devastates many lives each and every day in Australia, we cer-tainly found a way to host the morning tea with a huge smile on our dial.

Mother’s Day was a beautiful event once again this year at Blakehurst Aged Care Cen-tre. The ladies were pampered with a gift and a delicious lunch, as we gathered to-gether to recognise the amazing effort of all mums worldwide. We also received a visit from a few family members this year, which made the event that little bit extra special. It was great to see everyone having such a wonderful time at this years gathering.

On the 29th of June we will be once again head-ing to the Annual Win-ter Orchid Show. This years event will be held at Woolooware Shores by the regular host, Sutherland Shire Orchid Society.

“In 1952 a number of local orchid growing enthusiasts came together to form the Sutherland Shire Orchid Society. The Society's members soon became known for growing a large range of high quality exotic spe-cies and complex hybrids, but it was in the area of Australian Native orchids that the Society be-came especially noted. It is still highly regarded for its members' expertise with native orchids to this day”.

This event never fails to in delighting visitors with the many beautiful orchid varieties on dis-play. Join us: June 29th 10.00am

Hello and welcome to June!

May will go down as one the most memorable months of the year. We had so much fun at a variety of cele-brations this month - it was great to come back to work while all of the festivities were in full swing.

As most of you know, I was able to take some time off in May to explore Thailand in search of a little rest and relaxation. I can confirm that my search was met with success, as I spent a great deal of my holiday chilling and shopping. To walk out of my room and straight into a pool every morning, made it that little bit easier to start every day with a smile. While I was on vacation, Renee kindly kept my seat warm and made sure all of you were served a 5 star lifestyle. I am incredibly grateful for her efforts in my absence and I know you all loved having her lead the lifestyle way in my absence.

Taking a closer look at May I would have to declare the 60s themed Aus-tralia’s Biggest Morning Tea as one of the best gatherings I have ever been a part of. The combi prop we constructed for the festivities was certainly received with a huge round of applause by you all, you only have to take a look at the photos to see how much fun this item added to this very worthwhile gathering.

I would also like to thank all staff in-volved in decorating the dining areas for our Mothers Day celebration. Un-fortunately I was not here to attend this years event, however, after looking at the many pics of this day, I can see that you all had a lovely

time.

Coming up in June, Italian Republic Day kicks off the month on June 2nd. Domenico will be stopping by to provide an authentic dose of Italian music to the occasion. The Italian Republic day was enjoyed immense-ly last year and I am sure you will all appreciate the culture of this colour-ful country again this year. We also have another picnic coming up this month, weather permitting of course. Our last picnic was such a beautiful day due to the absolute perfect weather we were gifted with. Fingers crossed the sun shines for us on the 13th for the Bay and Park residents attending this picnic.

Please be reminded that we have a public holiday - the Queens Birthday - on the 12th of June. Although there will be no Lifestyle staff availa-ble this day, there will be plenty of care staff available to offer enter-tainment and activities.

Let’s get June started. Until next time - Life is for Living!

We had quite a few things to smile about this month, from the warmth of the sun to the hugs of a family member, at another Blakehurst Aged Care Centre celebration. Mother’s Day was a beautiful occasion with many family members finding the time to drop in. Residents also found a prime op-portunity to pop out, when Rhonda hosted a picnic at beauti-ful Como Reserve.

The monthly birthday party was the party of all parties

once again, as Miss M dropped in to entertain our birthday

boys and girls. Australia’s Big-gest Morning Tea had every-one in stitches as we hopped inside a cardboard combi to reminisce about days once

spent cruising the 60s scene.

Ridiculous Riddles... ? Answer on Page 11.

The more you take, the more

you leave behind. What am I?

The Cunning Fox and the Clever Stork.

Once upon a time, there lived a very cun-ning and mischievous fox. He used to speak to other animals sweetly and gain their trust, before playing tricks on them. One day the fox met a stork. He befriended the stork and acted like a very good friend. Soon, he invited the stork to have a feast with him. The stork happily accepted the invitation.

The day of the feast came, and the stork went to the fox’s house. To her surprise and disappointment, the fox said that he could not make a big feast as promised, and just offered some soup. When he brought the soup out of the kitchen, the stork saw that it was in a shallow bowl! The poor stork could not have any soup with its long bill, but the fox easily licked the soup from the plate. As the stork just touched the soup with the tip of its bill, the fox asked her, “How is the soup? Don’t you like it?”

The hungry stork replied, “Oh it is good, but my stomach is upset, and I can’t take any more soup!” “I’m sorry for troubling you,” said the fox. The stork replied, “Oh dear, please don’t say sorry. I have some health problem and cannot enjoy what you offer.”

She left the place after thanking the fox, and inviting him to her house for dinner. The day arrived and the fox reached the stork’s place. After exchanging pleasant-ries, the stork served soup for both of them, in a narrow jar with a long neck. She was able to have the soup very easily with her long bill, but the fox obviously could not.

After finishing hers, the stork asked the fox if he was enjoying the soup. The fox re-membered the feast he himself had given the stork, and felt very ashamed. He stam-mered, “I…I’d better leave now. I have a tummy ache.” Humiliated, he left the place running.

June 4, 1944 Europe: During World War II, Rome was liberated by the United States 5th Army. Rome had been declared an ‘open city’ by German Field Marshal Albert Kessel-ring amid Allied concerns the Germans might stage a Stalingrad-style defence that would devastate the historic 'Eternal' city.

June 5, 1783 The first sustained flight oc-curred as a hot-air balloon was launched at Annonay, France, by brothers Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier. Their 33-foot-diameter globe aerostatic ascended about 6,000 feet. In September, they repeated the experi-ment for King Louis XVI, using a sheep, rooster and duck as the balloon's passen-gers. Imagine that!

June 6, 1872 Pioneering feminist Susan B. Anthony was fined for voting in a presiden-tial election at Rochester, New York. After voting rights had been granted to African American males by the 15th Amendment, she attempted to extend the same rights to women. She led a group of women that vot-ed illegally, to test their status as citizens. She was arrested, tried and sentenced to pay $100, which she refused. Following her death in 1906 after five decades of tireless work, the Democratic and Republican parties both endorsed women's right to vote. In Au-gust of 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was finally ratified, allow-ing women to vote.

June 10, 1652 In Massachusetts, silver-smith John Hull opened the first mint in America, in defiance of English colonial law. The first coin issued was the Pine Tree Shil-ling, designed by Hull. [information source historyplace.com]
