Growing into our
Years
“10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed
for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.[c] 11 You will be enriched in every
way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; 12 for the
rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with
many thanksgivings to God.” II Cor. 9:10-12
The fertile land surrounding our church—farmed by the Dawleys, the Sittigs, the Hansons, the Meyers,
and others—are yielding yet again the green shoots of bean and corn plants that will soon be crops in the bin
again. For generations, these cared for fields have continued to grow the food needed for our world to keep
going. We always thank God for the bounty of the land.
Beaver Valley Lutheran Church has been around for a long time. We, like the land that surrounds our
church buildings, are a well-tended bunch of believers. Many faithful generations have gathered each week,
through thick and thin, and trusted in a power that is not our own. And, trusting in the Spirit’s daily, guiding
presence in our lives, we as a congregation continue to branch out and quite literally “grow” into the years of
ministry to come! We thank God for the bounty of this congregation.
St. Paul would have us remember that the bounteous supply of God is not just for the members of the
congregation (the “saints” as St. Paul calls us), but is the source of our “overflowing” return of thanks back to
God. Our growth into our years is God’s work to be humbly received. Words from St. Paul’s second letter to
the church at Corinth remind us that it is the same God who inspires and makes happen the miracle of two
hundred+ bushels per acre corn who also inspires and makes bountiful the lives of those who place their trust in
Christ Jesus. The growth of all good things (both physical and spiritual) must be seen as a gift from the One
who “supplies seed to the sower and bread for food.”
I pray that Beaver Valley is thankful for God’s presence among us as we enter into busy, June weeks of
ministry. Please read about and involve yourselves in the growth of our ministry as you are able. In this issue
of the Tidings read about:
Outdoor, Wednesday evening (7:00 p.m.) campfire worship (begins June 5th)
Vacation Bible School for our children and their friends (begins June 7th into Sunday morning June 9th)
Heritage Sunday—Our Sunday, June 23 celebration of our Mid-Sommer tradition.
Shetek Bible Campers load to go to camp on Sunday afternoon, June 23.
Growing conversations concerning Phase III of our Beaver Valley alive project: Outdoor ministry area.
As we ask God to guide and inspire our work, we will grow into what God wants us to become. I am
thankful for St. Paul’s words that remind us God will help us grow in just the right way if we but remember to
give God the thanks!
Blessings,
Pastor Greg Johnson
Beaver Valley Alive! We are almost there! What began almost three years ago as a prayed over
$150,000 capital campaign challenge to revitalize our ministry campus, (based upon our
perceived past and future strengths), is completed at the end of May.
We are close! As this newsletter is being written, we are within $3,361 of our goal
with a few days left in May. The Outdoor Ministry Committee have started the plans for our
future outdoor ministry area. Thank you to those helping on the Outdoor Ministry Committee:
Randy Nelson
Kevin and Georgia Backer
Kate Brick
Jason Haak
Sue Johannsen
David Schnabel

Greg Johnson
A grand total of our gifting to the Beaver Valley alive campaign will be celebrated
in June. We invite you to join in with whatever “second mile” (above and beyond regular
giving) you feel called to give.
Many Thanks,
Pastor Greg Johnson, on behalf of the Beaver Valley Alive co-chairs: Kevin Petterson,
Janet Anderson, Larry Johnson
June 1st, Saturday – Megan Johnson & Alex Knust Wedding A 4:30 p.m. wedding ceremony is planned. The couple thanks the congregation for their
prayers and support. Megan is the daughter of Pastor Greg and Nancy Johnson. She is
Marrying Alex Knust, son of Doug and Judy Knust of Chamberlain, SD.
June 4th, Tuesdays, 9:00 a.m. & 6:00 p.m. - Yoga classes
Yoga meets two different times on Tuesdays with Beaver Valley’s own Gingi Hanson. Through meditation,
stretching and breathing techniques you will be led to a sense of peace and well-being. All are welcome. If you
have questions, please contact Gingi at 582-6448.
June 5th, Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m. – Outdoor Worship Begins This summer we will again gather for worship on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. We are
going to recommit to making sure that a campfire is lit as often as possible with some s’mores
being enjoyed around the campfire after worship is over. There will occasionally be guest
campfire worship leaders. Bring your lawn chairs and remind your neighbors, especially those
who were gone over the weekend, to join you!
June 6th, Thursdays, 7:00 a.m. – Men’s Breakfast Men, this is our chance for some “small group” time. We meet at Tailgators restaurant for good
food and fellowship and some faith talk mixed in. Our numbers are growing! Come and join in!
We order right away and folks can leave when they need to leave.
June 7th – 9th, Friday – Sunday – VBS “Yee-Haw” This weekend event is taking shape thanks to the hard work of many. The board of
education along with the women of the church (food and snacks) are getting ready
to fully support another early summer chance to help our kids grow in their faith.
IF YOU HAVE TIME TO HELP IN ANY WAY, PLEASE CONTACT APRIL PROHL
VIA E-MAIL: [email protected]
June 12th, Wednesday, 7:45 p.m. – Bethany Befrienders Training Sharon Richards, new director of Life Enrichment and Activities at Bethany Home Brandon, has agreed to
come and spend some time with those from Beaver Valley who are interested in volunteering up at Bethany.
This training time will not be just for those who are interested in what we have called “Bethany Befrienders”
work. This one-on-one companionship program is a good way to be of service, but it is not the only way that a
person can volunteer in support of the Bethany ministry. Please let Pastor Greg/church office know if you plan
to attend this Wednesday evening training session.
June 13th, Thursday, 5:30 p.m. - WELCA Leaders Meeting At Sue Johannsen’s house.
--June Highlights--
June 13th, Thursday, 7:00 p.m. – Church Council Meeting The church council will meet to conduct monthly business on this second Thursday of June.
Members of Beaver Valley are always welcome to sit in on these meetings. Any business or
concerns that you would like to present to the council should be made known to church council
president, Gary Parker, at any time.
June 15th, Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - Art Gathering- Bring your supplies and join other
art enthusiasts on the 3rd Sat. morning of each month in the Fellowship Hall at 9am. This is a great
time for those who enjoy doing artwork-watercolor painting, acrylics, drawing etc. – to gather to work
on their projects and to learn from and inspire one another. Questions - call Sylvia Benson, 582-6795.
June 16th, Sunday, 9:30 a.m. – Father’s Day Father’s Day is another great day to stop and celebrate the importance of the
lives of parents. As we do on Mother’s Day, we will give thanks for the parent
who prayerfully raises their child in the faith through simple and dialing
kindnesses offered to their kids.
June 23rd, Sunday – Mid Sommar Celebration! The Church Council has approved plans for a simple but fun Mid Sommar Sunday this year. The day will begin
with a special coffee hour before worship!
8:30 a.m. come for egg coffee and some special treats.
9:30 a.m. head up for worship at 9:30 a.m.
11:00a.m. then there will be a second chance for a cup of coffee following worship (just coffee this time)
as we wait for the Dinner Bell to ring at 11:00 a.m.
With restricted use of the church kitchen all through the month of June, it was decided to have Tony
Catering do the grilling of pork loin and chicken breasts for us. All the other fixings will come together and
make this a fun, sit-outdoors-if-you-like celebration of God’s creation.
--June Highlights--
June 23rd, Sunday – Kids go to Shetek Bible Camp It is no small thing to report that eighteen youth from Beaver Valley (ages 3rd grade – 8th grade) will be heading
off to Bible camp on this Sunday afternoon. Some parents have already contacted the church office and
informed us of their need to deliver their child to camp without carpooling from the church. All other youth and
parents are invited to gather at the church to load and leave for Shetek Bible Camp by 1:30 p.m. Each
household should know what it owes by the time their child heads to Shetek. FINAL PAYMENT WILL BE
MADE BY EACH CHILD/PARENT AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION. Gifting by Beaver Valley
members has reduced each campers cost by $185 this year! Thanks everyone for your generous support of fund
raisers for our youth throughout the year. If you do not know what your remaining balance is contact the
Church Office (NOT Shetek) for that information.
June 25th, Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. – Pastor Greg at Helping Hand Assisted Living About every six weeks Pastor Greg leads morning chapel at Helping Hands. These short, half hour long
services are a gift we as a congregation share with the Brandon community. Currently our member, Terry
Knutson is a resident at Helping Hands.
--June Highlights--
Church family,
Thank you for the wonderful & sincere letters you’ve sent! I miss BVLC very much but
am getting more & more excited to come home in June. It’s nice to get a slice from home every
once in awhile. It makes my day to get a letter! I hope this winter is clearing up and that you’ll
get a lovely, warm spring with minimal flooding from here on out.
Love, Arohanui, (much love / big love)
- Alexa

Angel Fund. We appreciate your continued assistance to take care of essential needs that come
up over the course of the year. We are Blessed that you share with us.

Will be guitar /or keyboard led.
Will feature occasionlly guest preachers.
WELCA
Welcome to May. There are lots of exciting things happening with the WELCA group. Our last general
meeting went well. Information was shared about the countertop choice, the hardware, baskets, committee
needs, bylaw adoption and of course all of the help everyone provides. We are blessed with the generosity from
all of our members. We will be helping with the VBS meals coming in June. We will be asking for all
members to consider helping with either food donations or time donation. We will be placing sign-up sheets on
the bulletin board. Thank you in advance for any efforts you may be able to contribute. The Beginning Baskets
for the Childrens’ Inn are completed and will be delivered in the next couple of weeks. What a blessing to those
in need. I will be asking for volunteers to help Eileen with funeral planning. If this is something you would
like to help with, please contact either me or Eileen. The second committee needs we have will be to assist with
kitchen overseeing. Anita Schnabel and I will be involved, but we could use 2 or 3 more to help. Please
consider it--- it is easy ---I promise. Our next general meeting will be in July.
Lastly, I want to share an update on the countertop project. Beginning on May the 24th, the project will begin.
We will be closing the kitchen for 30 days to allow the surface to cure as a recommendation from the
manufacture. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and support during this time. We will be utilizing the
music room for whatever preparation is needed for Sunday gathering or any other events. We realize this is
inconvenient but will try to place all of the needed supplies in containers in the music room. If you have
concerns for particular needs, please let any of the leaders group know. The inconvenience will be worth the
result.
I look forward to increasing our member attendance and your continued support in our efforts.
Sue
Final Delivery of the New Beginnings Baskets has been made to Childrens’ Inn for the mothers. Thank You again to congregation for all your support on this big project.
VBS Weekend “Yee Haw”
(Celebrating God’s Greatest Gift)
At Yee-Haw VBS, kids will go on a frontier adventure where they’ll discover that God gives
good gifts! This VBS is filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences kids see, hear, and
touch. Team-building games, cool Bible songs, and multisensory Bible adventures are just a few
of the activities that help faith flow into real life. (Since everything is hands-on, kids might get a
little messy. Be sure to send them in play clothes and sturdy shoes.)
Parents, grandparents, and friends are invited to join us for a Sunday Celebration on Sunday,
June 9, 2019, a dramatic, open-range celebration of God’s love you won’t want to miss.
