PRESIDENT’S MESSAGESteve Hurst – Steve E. Hurst Construction

BUILD WITH PROFESSIONALS

This month we are launching a new PR campaign to help promote our quality HBA members to the public - “Build with Professionals.” The goal of this campaign is to educate consumers about the HBA’s reputable member companies and our support of this community.

A special thanks goes to our 1st VP, Steve McSwain with Maplestone Construction, who brought the need of community education and awareness to our attention earlier this year. Communications Manager, Beverly Hayes, created the campaign ad and made Steve’s concept come to life.

We have already had initial coverage of the campaign. There are articles and advertisements in the June Forsyth Family and

the summer edition of Home ReSource. Each article covers the HBAWS – Building with Professionals, our Habitat partnership and the Vocational Education Program. Pick up a copy of each of these great regional magazines.

You, HBAWS members, are the “cream of the crop” in the building industry and we want others

to recognize your efforts. We believe this campaign will help highlight you to the public.

This month’s newsletter includes a special insert, Build with Professionals. Please use this to promote your HBAWS membership by posting it in your showroom, office and/or store. With your help, we can make this campaign a success!

For more information about this campaign and your HBA, visit www.hbaws.net.

HBAWS members are easily found on the HBA online directory

Recent events in Japan and the Middle East, along with rising oil prices, are refocusing America’s attention on finding reliable energy alternatives. Luckily, we have a clean, abundant and reliable energy resource right here at home – natural gas. In fact, due to recent technology improvements in extracting natural gas from shale rock formations, the United States now has more than a 100 year supply of clean-burning natural gas at current levels of consumption. Shale gas deposits are to the United States what oil is to Saudi Arabia.

As an industry professional, you already know about the benefits of natural gas: more comfortable heat, quick-recovery water heating, efficient cooking and clothes drying, and the convenience of natural gas fireplaces, generators and grills. And, with the increased supply of natural gas helping to lower and stabilize prices, natural gas is more affordable than ever. As home buyers seek the best value for their money, the affordable cost and many benefits of natural gas will drive demand.

Did you know?• Natural gas heat can cut your customer’s home heating bills in half compared to heating oil or propane• Heating water with natural gas saves the average home owner in the Triad $145 annually compared to a comparable electric water heater!

Not only does natural gas cost less, the efficiency with which it is delivered to the end-user through transmission and distribution pipelines represents a real advantage to the natural gas customer. For every cubic foot of natural gas produced, ninety-two percent

NATURAL GAS TO PLAY A LARGE ROLE IN AMERICA’S ENERGY FUTUREof its original energy value reaches the customer’s meter. In contrast, only 28 percent of the original energy value used to generate electricity is ultimately delivered to homes and businesses due to conversion losses and losses associated with the transmission of electricity. This means that 72 percent of the energy needed to produce electricity from sources like coal, natural gas or nuclear is lost in the process. No matter how “smart” the electrical grid may be or become, it will not approach the efficiency with which natural gas is produced, transmitted and distributed to customers.

Growing environmental concerns, more socially responsible energy consumers and rising oil prices are translating into increased demand for natural gas in homes and businesses. As an abundant, domestic and affordable energy resource, the time is right to consider and choose natural gas to heat our homes and water, cook our meals and dry our clothes. To learn more about the benefits of natural gas or to inquire about getting natural gas in your next project, call 1-877-279-3636 or visit www.piedmontng.com.

Fall Parade Association HomeLocated at Brookberry FarmThe 2011 Parade of Homes Association House is quickly taking shape. The grading has been done and the back yard has taken on a whole new look. The deck and adjacent patio area will soon become a private backyard retreat, surrounded by lush landscaping, a wooded back yard, and common area.

Beyond the trees sits one of the many the lovely neighborhood lakes. There will also be an outdoor fireplace to enjoy roasted marshmallows or a warm fire on a cool evening. Whether you are inside or outside, this home provides both comfort and functionality for the entire family.

“If you can dream it, we can build it.” This is a saying that Buck Horn Construction truly believes…. Building a new home means starting with a clean slate. A blank canvas. You have a chance to make the choices for the home you’ve always dreamed.

What’s important to consider when building your new home is finding someone who listens and is able to transform your ideas into a gorgeous home. They should stand out as a capable craftsman with a love of the trade, and one who truly enjoys working and creating a home for his customers. Buck Horn Construction is the perfect choice for they exemplify these incredible traits.

If you can dream it, we can build it.

REMODELERS UPDATEMike Scardina, President, NAHBR, HBAWS

Remodelers Council Second Tuesday of each month

6pm - WFU Deacon Tower

Professional Women in BuildingMeets 1st Tuesdays Monthly

6:00 p.m.

So, we are at the half point of 2011 already! I hope everyone is seeing an up turn in their business as our economy seems to be improving. For this month’s program, we will have Don Dockery with us for an annual codes update. Boring maybe, but we are all aware of the importance of keeping up to date with recent code changes so I look forward to seeing everyone at our dinner meeting on June 14!

Last week, the compressor on my heat pump, (installed in 2005) locked up for the second time. I had the compressor replaced in 2008 while under warranty and now, I am being told the entire unit is out of warranty. Although I am not done pushing the manufacturer and distributor to stand behind their products, this has renewed my commitment to stand behind my products and services, above and beyond any written warranty. As remodeling professionals, we need to emphasize the value of doing business with a true professional, someone you can count on for service before, during, and after the sale.

Even during tough economic times, this service, or commitment to our customers, does have value to our customers and they will be willing to pay a fair price for it. Let’s make it a point during our presentations to emphasize the value of dealing with a true professional!

The PWB participated in the Belk Charity day by selling $5.00 off coupons for the April 16th event. We raised approximately $200.00 which will be donated to Hospice in memory of Darlene Good, a long time HBA employee and advisor to the then Women’s Council.

Our June 7th meeting will be a membership social at the home of Wanda Wilson.

If you are thinking of joining PWB, we would like to extend an invitation to attend the social.

GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS REPORTNancy Gould - Joint Governmental Affairs Director

NEED-TO-KNOW INFO: HWY. NC 109 IMPROVEMENTS

If you are looking at property located in southeast Forsyth

NCDOT Customer Service Office answers the toll-free customer service line, 1-877-DOT-4YOU, from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Another great source of information can be found at: www.ncdot.gov/projects/nc109improvements/. Their website includes maps of the study area and five corridor options. Also, there is a link to Vince Rhea, the NCDOT Project Manager in Raleigh. If you wish to be personally kept up to date, simply send him an email request with your postal (not email) mailing address.

County or northeast Davidson County, it may be located in one of five roadway corridor options for future improvements to NC 109 (from US 311 down to Old Greensboro Road).

Since the early 2000’s NCDOT has wanted to make the drive between Winston-Salem and Thomasville safer, easier and more efficient. NCDOT is currently evaluating public input from the past few years and will be selecting one of the five corridors as the “preferred alternative” late this summer / early fall.

During summer 2012, the department will present its final design planes to the public, at which time another set of public meetings will take plans to see if further refinement is needed.

Although these major improvements may not take place for several years, you need to be aware of these plans if you are preparing to list, market, show, buy, lease or build on a property within or near one of the corridor options.
