DEAR COLLECTORSA sampling of all we share
Sometimes we look at the stamps we’re covering in a particular issue of Details, and we can’t get over how just a fraction of the offerings in our annual stamp program can depict such a wide range of important topics to Canadians.
Take this issue, for example. We’re revealing our third set of stamps on
UNESCO World Heritage sites, which feature dinosaur stomping grounds, the early Basque whaling industry and a park that exemplifies the long and peaceful relationship we’ve enjoyed with our neighbours to the south – not to mention some beautiful, typically Canadian scenery that you’ll want to collect and share in your mail.
Then there’s our Weather Wonders stamp issue. Let’s face it, Canadians love to talk (and sometimes gripe) about the weather – and these stamps show
just how amazing the elements can be. Then there’s our tribute to author Alice Munro, beloved here at home not only for writing her short stories, but also for capturing the attention of the world when she became the first Canadian woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Clearly, the stamps in this issue of Details capture it all – our nature, history, peace-loving temperament, culture, art and achievements. It’s a sampling of all that Canadian stamps have to offer, and we hope you enjoy it.
Jim Phillips, Director, Stamp Services

WEATHER WONDERSIssue date: June 18, 2015
Sunny, cloudy, pleasant or miserable – we feel the weather deeply. There’s no escaping it… but who would want to? The intense beauty of good, bad or even dangerous weather captures imaginations, sparks conversations and inspires artists.
From brilliant flashes of lightning to crystal-clear ice veneers, the images on these stamps showcase the incredible variety of weather we experience in Canada – all thanks to the photographers who braved the elements to capture these meteoro-logical marvels.
Armed with these spectacular visuals, Kosta Tsetsekas and Defne Corbacioglu – of Vancouver-based Signals – designed a set of stamps that are tied together seamlessly.
“We used themed icons as a nod to the long history of weather iconography – the small suns, clouds and raindrops you see in your daily weather forecast,” explains Tsetsekas. “The icons add spice to the stamps without clouding the wonderful photography,” adds Corbacioglu.
The five photographs come from every corner of the country. Daryl Benson snapped hoar frost (1) covering a tree near Beaumont, Alberta. Geoff Whiteway focused on hazy, early-morning fog (2) at Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site in Newfoundland. In Saint-Gédéon, Quebec, Mike Grandmaison chased a rain shower to shoot a double rainbow (3), while Dave Reede captured radiant flashes of lightning (4) near Winnipeg, Manitoba. Further north, in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Frank Reardon caught rarely witnessed sun dogs (5), created by ice crystals in the air.
Each weather wonder was carefully chosen with expert assistance from Environment Canada’s senior climatologist, David Phillips, who shares our fascination with weather. Says Phillips, “I marvel at the beauty – and violence – of weather in Canada, which these stamps spectacularly depict.”
Weather is both dazzling and deadly, and that is why it is so attractive to us.David Phillips, senior climatologist at Environment Canada

Our multi-year journey through the wonders of Canada’s UNESCO World Heritage sites continues with this third issue composed of three U.S.- and two international-rate stamps. This long-running series is being produced along with a fourth issue comprising domestic definitives that will be released later this year. This is in response to many requests we’ve received over the years for stamps that depict the natural and cultural beauty of our country.
Home to most of the tallest peaks in North America and the largest ice field outside of the polar caps, Kluane National Park and Reserve (1) in the Yukon and British Columbia’s Tatshenshini-Alsek Park (1)
are the Canadian components of a vast, unbroken ecological unit that covers 97,000 square kilometres. The only human interaction with the land is a historic Aboriginal presence. This World Heritage site also includes Alaska’s Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve (1) and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (1). It was the first transboundary site to be placed on the World Heritage List.
Dinosaur Provincial Park (2), in the badlands of southeastern Alberta, contains some of the most important fossil discoveries of more than 40 dinosaur species dating back to the Late Cretaceous Period, 75 million years ago. The retreat of the last ice age about

13,000 years ago created the Red Deer River Valley, along with the hoodoos, isolated mesas and low-lying coulees of the badlands. It also left the Earth’s greatest concentration of Late Cretaceous dinosaur fossils. Since digging began in the 1880s, more than 300 dinosaur skeletons have been pulled from a 27-kilometre stretch along the Red Deer River. These remains can be found in museums around the world.
Wood Buffalo National Park (3) is the very embodiment of northern Canada. Its 44,807 square kilometres encompass boreal forest and plains and some of the largest undisturbed grass and sedge meadows left in North America. These meadows
sustain the largest free-roaming herd of bison, the nesting habitat of the world’s last remaining wild migratory flock of whooping cranes, and some nesting sites of the peregrine falcon.
The idea to unite two national parks, Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta and Glacier National Park in Montana, was first proposed in 1931 by the Rotary clubs of Alberta and Montana. A year later, the two combined to become the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park (4), the first park of its kind in the world to promote peace and friendship between nations. A diversity of wildlife exists within its boundaries, including an international herd of elk
This year’s series is a beautiful patchwork of differing landscapes, of textures and colours, of contrasts in scale and perspective, and of historical, geographical and cultural history.Lara Minja

that migrates annually between a summer mountain habitat in Glacier and winter prairie ranges in Waterton. An Aboriginal presence dates back 12,000 years, and in both parks remain places that hold deep significance for First Nations peoples. In fact, Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park stands on the land of three nations: Canada, the United States and the Blackfoot Confederacy.
In 2013, the World Heritage Committee chose Red Bay Basque Whaling Station (5) as the newest site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the
16th century, whalers from France and Spain came to the Strait of Belle Isle to hunt the then-plentiful right and bowhead whales. A thriving whale oil industry developed along the Labrador coast throughout the 1500s. Also a National Historic Site of Canada, Red Bay houses the remains of rendering ovens, cooperages, workshops, temporary dwellings, wharves and whale bones. Underwater rest the remains of vessels exempli-fying 16th-century European shipbuilding techniques, including four whaling ships and smaller boats.

ALICE MUNROIssue date: July 10, 2015
Alice Munro is one of Canada’s most celebrated and beloved writers. She was born in 1931 in Wingham, southwestern Ontario, the region that inspired the setting for many of her stories. Regarded as an author who renewed the short-story form, her early work was published in Canadian literary journals and featured on CBC Radio’s Anthology. In the mid-1970s, her stories began to appear in The New Yorker, which brought her a broader, international audience.
Many collections of stories followed, along with numerous awards, culminating in 2013, when she became the first Canadian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature – an achievement celebrated with this commemorative issue.
The stamp features a photo of the author taken by her daughter Sheila Munro and a vintage photo of Wingham. Samples of the author’s handwriting are ghosted over the image. The Official First Day Cover also features these elements and other images from the region; it is cancelled in Wingham, Ontario.
The stamp was designed by Marcio Morgado and art directed by Paul Haslip of HM&E.
