Well, here I am again. At the last regular SNRW meeting, I was voted in as President Pro Tem until such time as either President Shari James or Acting President/1st Vice President Jill Di- mock is able to resume the presidency. I am honored to once again serve as your president on a temporary basis. I am pleased that Sharla Hales has agreed to step into the Vice President- Program position. She has already done a marvelous job in selecting speakers for our next meetings. We had a great meeting in May, with candidates for Assembly District 39, Robin Reedy and incumbent Jim Wheeler, fielding questions prepared by the Board. The questions were: What do you think the biggest issues facing the evada legislature will be in the next session? What factors will you consider in decision-making? What role should constituent opinion play? How will you determine what constituent opinion is? What is your position on new taxes? What is your position on the "no new tax" pledge? What are your personal priorities to accomplish in the next legislative session? How is your campaign being funded? This was followed by questions from the floor. Following the above scheduled presentation, and after some regular business before the membership, other candidates were invited to introduce themselves and tell about their campaign. We are so fortunate to have so many candidates attend our meetings, so we can be truly informed voters.. Don't forget, early voting starts May 24th. Date, time and location are located on the front page of your Sample Ballot. The Primary Election Day is Tuesday, June 10th (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). YUM YUM

April 26th was a day my husband Jack and I were looking forward to and one we will always remember. The reason was that at the SNRW’s St. Patrick’s Day dinner, we had won the bid for a dinner with Ron Knecht and his family, cooked by Ron and his lovely wife Kathy, and Ron and I had agreed on this date for the meal. When Ron told me it was a dinner for four, we asked Nancy and Phil Brisack to be our guests.

It is difficult to put into words a dining experience as pleasant and satisfying to our palates as this one. The menu included Ron-grilled filet mignon with béarnaise sauce, Kathy’s special green salad with “secret” blue cheese dressing, delicious rice with water chestnuts, and cherry cobbler for dessert.

Particularly enjoyable was our varied conversation which included Ron’s political views and diversified profes-sional background, Phil’s semi-sesquicentennial (75th) birthday that very day, and some of Jack’s Navy career experiences. It was also delightful to talk with Kathy, 12-year-old Karyn Knecht and Kathy’s mother Christina.

We were so interested in one another that we remained at the Knecht home much later than anticipated. Our camaraderie was amazing as the evening literally “flew” by. We certainly want to thank Ron and Kathy for their graciousness and willingness to share their home with us. We hope they will continue the dinner as an SNRW tradition so more members will have the opportunity to know the Knecht family on a more personal level.

SNRW HOLDS CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION AT MINDEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

On May 19, 2014 members of the SNRW Constitution Committee joined fifth graders at Minden Elementary

School, along with their teachers, to hold a Constitutional Convention. This is the third time that such a

convention, organized by our committee, has been held at this campus.

All of the students, teachers and committee members placed themselves in 1787 Philadelphia. The stu-

dents were divided into the twelve state delegations that had come to Philadelphia for our first Constitu-

tional Convention.

“Special appearances” were made by Delegate George Mason from Virginia (otherwise known as Marie

Schnock), James Madison, also a Virginia delegate, (looking a lot like Lynn Muzzy) and Daniel Carroll of

Maryland (probably Mary Porter). Gold Star Mother, Sally Wiley also attended. Sally has been a delegate

at just about all of our Conventions, and her presence makes the point that the sacrifice some, such as her

son, Sean, have given so much in the defense and protection of our Constitution.

Chief Delegate, Commissioner Barry Penzel, instructed the delegates that they were to search the pocket

Constitutions that had been distributed and answer the question posed to each delegation. After their

searches were completed, the secretary for each delegation reported the answer to the entire convention.

Barry also passed around a parchment copy of the Bill of Rights for the students to see.

The students at Minden Elementary School were interested and polite. A few stopped us to say thank you

at the conclusion of the event. Their parents, and teachers, can be proud of the children they are raising.

Sally, Marie, Lynn, Barry and Mary are happy to share their recollections of the Convention with SNRW

Members. A few photos are presented with this article.

Recommended Reading

The Constitution Committee has made a number of book recommendations since its initiation a few years ago.

Committee members are continually on the lookout for suggestions. Please do not fail to bring a book recom-

mendation to our attention.

This month your attention is directed to Non-Negotiable, Essential Principles of a Just Society and Human Cul-

ture, by Shelia Liaugminas, Ignatius Press, 2014. The author addresses the question of how it is determined

that a law is just or unjust at a time when laws affecting marriage, euthanasia, abortion and conscience protec-

tion are challenged and changing. She examines the influence of our nation’s founding documents that cur-

rently are under some scrutiny and even attack.

The well-written book can be said to be directed to religious audiences only, but it deserves a larger reader-

ship. One may not agree with some or all of the author’s analyses and conclusions. However, the issues

raised are food for thought, discussion and debate.

On the evening of May 20 Republican Lieutenant Governor Candidates, Mark

Hutchison and Sue Lowden stopped in Douglas County for their final pre-election

face-off. In a question and answer session that was part of the Candidate Forum

at CVIC organized by our Republican Central Committee, they addressed

unfunded pensions in the public sector, ownership of public lands, Sunset taxes,

Common Core, Obamacare and attracting business to our state.

Republican Assembly District 39 Candidate, Robin Reedy, an SNRW member,

and Incumbent Assemblyman, Jim Wheeler, an SNRW associate, fielded

questions about Nevada’s Land Management Task Force, bringing business to

Nevada, cutting back state programs, Sunset taxes, Obamacare and same-day

voter registration. State Senator James Settelmeyer, another SNRW associate,

spoke to the audience briefly. He is unopposed for re-election.

Candidates for Douglas County Sheriff, Dave Brady, Michael Gyll and incumbent

Sheriff Ron Pierini were the final candidates to answer questions. They were

asked about the organization of the department, equipment required, efforts to

stop illegal drug traffic and the department’s role in dealing with illegal

immigration.

The Moderator, Jerry Evans, owner of The Evans Broadcasting Company, Inc.,

laid out the ground rules and posed questions to all of the candidates. These

questions were selected from those offered by individuals before and at the

forum. Candidates had not seen the questions in advance.

Forum attendees had the opportunity to meet the candidates. They also voted for

three candidates in a 2016 Presidential Straw Poll. Winners in the order of

finish were Dr. Ben Carson, Governor Scott Walker and Senator Ted Cruz.

Senator Rand Paul finished a close fourth.

DCRCC’s Candidate Forum was sufficiently newsworthy to have been the lead

story on that evening’s Channel 2 Eleven O’clock News. The forum would not

have been nearly as successful without the hard work of forum committee co-

chairs, Richard Schwabe and Nicholas Maier, and the volunteer efforts of SNRW

members and associate members, Jerri and Bob Bolinger, Jan and Lynn Muzzy,

Marie and Carl Schnock and of course, DCRCC Chair Marco Caldana, who is an

SNRW associate member.

State Senator Dan Gustavson recently posted the following on his website concerning a

petition that is being circulated to require proof of identification when casting a vote. This

is of crucial interest as you will see when you read his message:

“Most states now require proof of identification when casting a vote. Sadly, Nevada is not yet in that camp. The Nevada Legislature has failed to take any rational steps to protect the most decisive part of our democratic process. WE THE PEOPLE MUST ACT NOW TO PROTECT THE INTEGRITY OF NEVADA'S ELECTIONS! The ACLU's recent attempt to deny voter identification requirements in Nevada have failed and a Nevada Judge has cleared the path to let the Citizens decide. Nevadan's must move quickly to get this measure on the upcoming November ballot! We must act swiftly to qualify this measure well in advanced before the upcoming November Election. Our deadline to collect signatures to qualify is June 12th. If everybody receiving this email collects a minimum of 20 signatures, we could qualify this to be placed the Nov. 2014 ballot. We cannot do it without you! Please help us get the required signatures now by going to my website to download the petition & instruction guide. Public confidence regarding fairness & integrity at the ballot box is at an all time low. This is why a large majority of Americans demanded Voter ID laws in their state. Nevada deserves the same assurance as other states to guarantee that our ballot box is also safeguarded. Time is of essence! The deadline is fast approaching! Download the petition & instruction guide now and remember to return your forms BEFORE June 12th! Please do not hesitate to call me at 775-972-0229 if you have any questions.

Until then, yours in Victory!

Don Gustavson, Nevada State Senate P.O. Box 51601 Sparks, NV 89435 www.DonGustavson.com “ These petitions will be available for you to sign at our June 11 meeting. However, if you

have the time you might down load a petition and instructions, and circulate it among your

friends and neighbors in our County.
