Dear Visitor, It’s truly my pleasure to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to Bermuda.

Located two hours from most East Coast gateway cities and six hours from Europe, Bermuda is 21 square miles of breathtaking beaches, quaint roadways, gorgeous scenery, unique architecture and the bluest waters as far as the eye can see.

We have a host of events and activities showcasing Bermuda’s thriving culture and rich history. Events include the Newport to Bermuda Yacht Race, the 15th Annual Bermuda Music Festival, Annual Gombey Festival and much more!

If you’re a golf enthusiast, you’ll be pleased to know that this year Bermuda will play host to one of the world’s most prestigious golf tournaments – the 30th Annual PGA Grand Slam of Golf. It’s an event not to be missed and some of golf ’s greatest stars are expected to descend on the Island for this tournament.

As Bermudians, we take great pride in our genuine hospitality and whether you are residing in some of our finest properties, dining in our exceptional restaurants, relaxing in our many spas, playing a round of golf or exploring our many attractions, I am certain that during your visit, you will see this warmth displayed time and again.

I sincerely hope you enjoy your visit to our shores. We’re very pleased that you have chosen Bermuda for your vacation.

Sincerely,

Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown, JP, MPPremier Minister of Tourism and Transport

Bermudian architecture is unique. It is also picturesque, so much so, it has become a favorite subject of artists, whether local or visitor. As Canadian artist John Lyman wrote in 1914, “The old Bermudian dwelling has a charm quite independent of its definable architecture, the charm of setting, the charm of texture and surface, the charm of spontaneous design and proportion...a tactile quality as though modeled by sculptors’ hands.” Many of the paintings in the Masterworks Museum Collection picture varying aspects of Bermudian architecture, especially cottages and, frequently, these depictions display the very qualities noted by Lyman.

The main drive of the Masterworks Foundation has been the repatriation of paintings about Bermuda and over the two decades of its existence more than 1200 works of art have been collected. Many, although not all, are of Bermuda houses.

Many years ago, while teaching at a college in the southern US, I was involved with the design of a new building for an art department. I remember asking the architect whether he had a rendering of what the building was going to look like. He replied that he did not, but that if the building functioned well, it would also look good. That is true of the historic Bermuda cottage as well. It is an age-old example of that modernist slogan, of form following function. Indeed, there is a notable organic quality to Bermudian architecture.

The current exhibition at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is about the Bermuda house. Using examples from their collection, plus other architectural objects, the exhibition showcases our distinctive way of building and living. The Bermuda house is at the centre of a total lifestyle, a style that is Bermudian in many different aspects of daily existence, including, speech, food, dress, customs, as well as architecture.

But what are the principal characteristics of the Bermuda house? The most conspicuous feature is its roof. This evolved over the first century of the Bermuda settlement, but has since proved to be of such practicality we continue to utilize it. It provides shelter and being white washed, it reflects the heat waves away, thus helping keep the house cool. Primarily, it is used as a water-catch, thus providing water for each household. Additionally, being of considerable weight, it stands up well to high winds. The Bermuda roof, if regularly cleaned and whitewashed, will last for centuries.

A trip to Bermuda would not be complete without a visit to the island’s newest attraction, The Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. Opened in March 2008, this state of the art building is the first purpose built museum in the history of Bermuda.

Housed in the beautiful Botanical Gardens in Paget, five minutes from Hamilton, the new museum is in itself a work of art. To learn about Bermuda’s culture and history there is no better stop on your vacation itinerary than the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art!

close relationship with the artists, many of who now work exclusively on commissions for the Gallery. Mr. Hind visits Zimbabwe up to three times a year, personally helping to source, quarry and truck stone to the artists’ workshops where the sculptors set about making hard, beautiful Zimbabwean stone such as springstone, butter jade and serpentine, live and breathe. The Gallery teems with handsome tribal chiefs, elaborately braided women, prowling leopards, and intricate herds of antelopes and elephant. The pieces can weigh up to 400 lbs but the Gallery can ship pieces all over the world at reasonable cost. Each piece has already travelled more than 8,000 miles, packed in custom boxes, made by the Gallery’s experienced staff in Zimbabwe. The Gallery will repack, fully insure and ship within days of purchase. Remember that original works of art are duty-free into the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Smaller pieces up to about 25 lbs can be taken as accompanying baggage.

MasTerwOrks MUseUM OF berMUDa arTs 441 236-2950, www.bermudamasterworks.com Set in the Botanical Gardens, Bermuda’s first ever purpose built museum houses a collection of over 1,200 pieces of Bermuda inspired art. Renowned artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Winslow Homer and Albert Gleizes are part of the permanent collection, and there are continuously evolving shows of local artists on display. Masterworks Foundation was started 21 years ago with just a few paintings, and has grown to the collection we see today. In March 2008, after five years of construction, the new Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art was opened to the public. The museum presents an impressive new facility for educational purposes for all Bermudians, as well as providing an exciting new destination for visitors to the island. A museum shop sells local art and cedar woodworks, and a cafe is set to open in the summer of

2010. Museum is easily accessible with a ramp and elevator. On display in the Butterfield Family Gallery from June 20th through to the end of the year is “We Are Sailing”, an exhibition featuring approximately 45 works, ranging in date from 1793 to the present. This is a special exhibition exploring Bermuda’s bond with the sea and the wide-ranging effects of the island’s unique seascape, topography, and light on the many artists who experienced them. The exhibition includes works by a diversity of artists, including Albert Gleizes, Marsden Hartley, Winslow Homer, and Malcolm Morley. The exhibition coincides with the mid-June arrival of the fleet of tall ships participating in the Atlantic Challenge 2009, a race, last held in 2000, that circumnavigates the Atlantic Ocean. Bermuda Breeze…..Our newest and exciting fragrance launching now, exclusively in Bermuda. This ‘fruity floral’ was inspired by our island’s tropical sea breezes with aromas of natural fruits and flowers.

After successfully launching Bermuda Blue four years ago, our locals & visitors wanted a new fragrance, something that would remind them of Bermuda.

A perfect scent is a hard thing to create… but we managed! We tried several different scents; you don’t want something that’s too fruity or too flowery. We tested on family & friends, choosing different variations of local

flowers and fruits…unanimously choosing this one!

Bermuda Breeze hints of mandarin, orange & berries. It has jasmine petals & violet leaves and dries down with lovely sandalwood & white musk.

The inspiration for the beautiful packaging is drawn from our brilliant clear turquoise ocean surrounding us. The design was created with the assistance of Terry Madeiros of TM Design. Terry did a fantastic job capturing Bermuda’s breeze off our ocean waves. It’s exactly the expression we wanted.

Bermuda Blue and Bermuda Breeze are perfect for gift giving! They are inexpensive

www.GolfTravelSociety.com

griP iT anD riP iTOne of the most under appreciated pieces of equipment in your golf

bag is your golf grips. Grips are made of materials that age and wear as a function of time. Heat, cold, rain, dirt, and oils from your hands all age your grips and cause the natural degradation of the grip. The traction that a fresh grip provides lets you hold the club lightly without the subconscious fear of losing the club during your swing. This promotes proper swing mechanics and wrist action, while a worn grip causes you to grasp the club tighter, causing arm and wrist tension that inhibits proper swing mechanics.

As a rule of thumb, you should re-grip once every year. Regardless of whether you play golf every day or only twice a year, it is important that your grips are soft and tacky. Granted, frequent play and personal preference may dictate re-gripping more often, but normally there’s enough degradation of the material after a year to warrant fresh grips. Keep in mind that grips lose a significant amount of their original feel long before they become hard and glazed over.

Many people find that getting in the routine of re-gripping every spring as the golf season “officially” begins is the easiest way to remember. Your PGA Professional can assist in choosing the proper grip. Golf grip manufacturers have improved the number of options available including ribbed grips which provide helpful placement of the hands on the grip, grips that reduce vibration for those with arthritis, cord grips for those whose hands perspire and grips with soft and firm composites to fit your “feel” preferences.

Don’t forget that putter grip! The putter is in your hands more than any other club in your bag. A golfer will use the putter once, twice and unfortunately three and four times per hole played. There are plenty of choices for putters as well. The fitting of the putter grip maybe the most important of any of your clubs. An improperly fit putter grip can promote off-line putting. Ask your PGA Professional to join you on the putting green to check your inconsistencies.

Keep your grips clean. Most grips can be cleaned with mild dish washing liquid. Take a wet towel and apply the dish washing liquid. Wipe your grips and get ready to be surprised at the amount of dirt that you can remove. Then simply towel dry or let the grips dry naturally.

I would also mention that studies have found that a new set of grips can save golfers three to four strokes per round. Now that’s a reason to plan a grip change today.

Remember that you can change your own grips and save a few dollars for the driving range. Simply cut the old grips off with a carpet knife. Remove any access tape from the shaft. Apply two sided tape to the shaft in spirals in the same length of your grip. I then take a spray bottle of paint thinner and spray three squirts into my golf grip placing my finger over the hole on the top of the grip. Covering the bottom of the grip, shake the solvent inside the grip, then pour it over the two sided tape. Slide the grip over the shaft and position it. Then leave for twenty to thirty minutes and the clubs are ready for use.

Now you are ready to “Grip it and rip it!”

Gosling’s Rums. The Spirit of Bermuda.Excessive alcohol consumption may be harmful to your health.

Thanks to seven generations of patient distilling and blending methods, Gosling’s rums are widely regarded around the world, but alas, not widely available. So there are many unique treasures to explore and savor in Bermuda, and these are three of them: Our flagship Black Seal Rum, our newest, Gold Rum and our absurdly slowly made, Old Rum.

It Isn’t Just Bermuda’s Sun and Sand The World Loves.

Dining in Bermuda is an experience on its own. Imagine that you’re at one of Bermuda’s pink beaches savoring a local delicacy, the Bermuda fishcake sandwich. If you would like to experience what Bermudians love, then you would order the works. An old-timer once told me that Bermudians invented “the works.” Even if that statement isn’t accurate, the Bermuda fish sandwich with the works is like nothing I have experienced before.

Local and internationally recognized chefs create a dining adventure that will take your taste buds to a new level. Wines and spirits from around the world will be matched to perfection with each course. Go back in time; several restaurants date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The globe is represented in the restaurants that dot Bermuda and it’s easy to locate a restaurant close to the ocean, with views that will inspire all your senses.

MUSIC!Bermuda waters, but with my love of the style of Mediterranean cooking, there is something for everyone, including favorite recipes from my mother!” Chef Livio began his training at age eleven in a hotel in his village home of Cortina D’Ampezzo in Italy where he was born and raised. He proudly relates how he has cooked for famous people such as President Carter, Michael Douglas, David Bowie, Iman and even the President of Italy. “I always chose to work in an environment of a very high standard, alongside many respected head chefs”, thus he trained and worked in some of Italy’s most prestigious hotels and restaurants….always remembering that to be the best chef meant “your heart was in your hands!” Today Chef Livio prides himself on maintaining this rule so, with very few exceptions, everything on his menu is made in his kitchen. He emphasizes that he likes to ‘create’ what his customers want, then acknowledges that this should be the role of a true chef, one who has been trained by the best. The happy atmosphere in his lively restaurant is enhanced by the fun music, the wonderful indoor/outdoor bar and dining, and of course the views of the waterfront. “When my customers see their food, I want them to say, “Wow! The plate looks so beautiful and enticing,” he said smiling. It is not unusual to see Chef Livio chatting with the diners in his restaurant. Ask to meet him…we know he would love to meet you! He will give you an evening to remember!

With our beautiful Bermuda summer days upon us, I happened to have been sitting outside reading up on history. When reading about Spain I became enamored with the wines, cheeses and seafood from that region. So I figured, why not head out and see what I could find to create a real Spanish summer dinner.

The foods that Spain enjoys when the mercury rises are suited to lighter foods, smaller portions and refreshing fare. The wine I chose was the 2008 Vinos Portal White which is a blend of 70% Garnacha Blanca, 20% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Viognier and 5% Macabeo. This absolutely refreshing white wine displays a brilliant yellow color. The bouquet is redolent with white peach and rose and leads to flavours of grapefruit zest and a medley of stone fruits followed by a nuance of tropical fruit

After tasting this lovely refreshing wine, I began to daydream about the foods that might heighten an already sublime experience. I had tasted a new product just the week before and fell in love with it. The object of this Spanish delight was the Ortiz Boquerones (marinated sardines from Spain). I decided to make a wonderful fresh fish dish and used the vino and sardines that had captured my imagination.

I then began to think of a way to finish my culinary journey through Spain and decided to find a cheese that would complement the remaining glass of Vinos Portal White. Earlier that week, I wandered over to our artisan cheese department and asked about a Spanish goat cheese that

would be new to me. They pointed out the Montcabrer. Montcabrer is a semi-firm goat cheese from Catalunya that is bathed in vegetable oil and charcoal and aged for 60-90 days. The rind is gray, the result of the surface mould mingling with the charcoal. The texture is creamy and there is a slight sweetness, which is derived from the milk of the Murciana goats. This cheese also exhibits an earthy, full-flavoured richness and a slightly tangy finish. I was thrilled with this pairing and in awe at the History between Bermuda and Spain, in terms of hot weather, food, wine and our shared passion for them. Here is a dish I created that brings them all together! Goce!
