LODGE BROTHER LOU SABITINI GAVE A WONDERFUL CULTURE PRESENTATION, HOW ITALIAN

AMERICANS BUILT LONG ISLAND IN THE LATE 1880’S TO EARLY 1900’S.

IN NYC THEY WORKED AS MANUAL LABORERS IN CONSTRUCTION AND GARMENT INDUSTRIES, AND

PRINTING TRADES.

THEY HELPED BUILD THE LIRR OUT TO LONG ISLAND.

THE ITALIANS HELPED DEVELOP SOME OF THE BEST NURSERIES ON LONG ISLAND. THE ITALIANS

SHOWED THEM HOW TO ENRICH THE SOIL, MAKING IT MORE PRODUCTIVE TO GROW.

THE BUILDING INDUSTRY IN NYC WAS BOOMING BY THE 1890’S, THERE WAS A HUGE SAND PIT IN PORT

WASHINGTON. SAND FROM THERE WAS USED TO BUILD MANY SKYSCRAPERS IN NYC, THE CHRYSLER

BUILDING, WORLD TRADE CENTER ALSO FDR DRIVE AND WEST SIDE HIGHWAY. SAND MINING ERA IN

PORT WASHINGTON ENDED IN THE 1990’S. ON JUNE 11, 2011 A MEMORIAL WAS BUILT AT THE GATE

ENTRANCE OF THE FORMER COLONIAL SAND AND STONE COMPANY FOR ALL THE IMMIGRANTS WHO

WORKED THERE.

OTHER CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS WORKED ON BY THE ITALIANS; LONG ISLAND MOTOR PARKWAY

AND BELMONT RACETRACK.

YOGI BERRA IN THE NEWS

When it rains, it pours: two Yogi Berra films are in the works, with options for both signed

in recent months. One of the films will be a documentary, while the other will be a feature

film. According to the Sports Business Journal, actor Nick Basta is taking care of the

feature film and hopes to finish the screenplay later this year, while Peter Sobiloff will be

producing the Berra documentary.

Basta is known for a handful of one-off roles on a variety of Law & Order series, a

recurring role on the AMC show Turn: Washington’s Spies, and a pair of episodes of the

third season of HBO’s True Detective. Sobiloff has produced a handful of features,

including last summer’s short film Skin. However, don’t expect Basta’s film to be

concentrated on Berra’s baseball career.

Albert Ghiorso (July 15, 1915 – December 26, 2010)

An American nuclear scientist and co-discoverer of a record 12 chemical elements

on the periodic table.

His research career spanned six decades, from the early 1940s to the late 1990s.

Ghiorso was born in California of Italian and Spanish ancestry.

As a teenager, he built radio circuitry and earned a reputation for establishing radio contacts

at distances that outdid the military.

Alessandra Belloni BORN JULY 24, 1954, is an Italian musician, singer,

dancer, actress, choreographer, teacher, and ethnomusicologist.

Her instrument is the Southern Italian tambourine and her music and dance are

focused on the traditional roots of tarantella.

Her studies of tarantism are rooted in the culture of Apulia and Calabria, expressing it

from women's point of view.

Her work has gained international appreciation,

especially in the United States and Brazil.

She is artist in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine

An Italian general and nationalist. A republican, he contributed to the Italian unification and the

creation of the Kingdom of Italy. He commanded and fought in many military campaigns that led

eventually to the Italian unification.

In 1848, the provisional government of Milan made Garibaldi a general, and in 1849, the Minister of

War promoted him to General of the Roman Republic to lead the Expedition of the Thousand on

behalf and with the consent of Victor Emmanuel II. His last military campaign took place during the

Franco-Prussian War, as commander of the Army of the Vosges.

Garibaldi was born and christened Joseph-Marie Garibaldi on 4 July 1807 to the Ligurian family of

Domenico Garibaldi from Chiavari and Maria Rosa Nicoletta Raimondi from Loano.

He took up the cause of the Republic of Rio Grande do Sul in its attempt to separate from Brazil,

joining the rebels in the Ragamuffin War of 1835.

During this war he met Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro da Silva commonly known as Anita. In 1841

Garibaldi and Anita moved to Montevideo, Uruguay, where Garibaldi worked as a trader and

schoolmaster. The couple married in Montevideo the following year. They had four children–

Domenico Menotti "Menotti" (born 1840), Rosa "Rosita" (born 1843-1945),

Teresa "Teresita" (born 1845), and Ricciotti (born 1847).

CORSA DEL PALIO DEFINITION

The Palio, Italian in ful;l Corsa del Palio (“Course of the Banner”), festival of medieval origin conducted annually

in certain Italian cities and featuring bareback horse races. Best known to foreigners is the Palio of Siena. Horse

racing in Siena dates from 1232.

Palio is the name given in Italy to an annual athletic contest, very often of a historical character, pitting the neighbourhoods of a town or the hamlets of a comune against each other. Typically they are fought in costume and commemorate some event or tradition of the Middle Ages, and thus often involve horse racing, archery, jousting, crossbow shooting, and similar medieval sports. Once purely a matter of local rivalries, many have now become events staged with an eye to visitors and foreign tourists.

CELEBRATIONS, BUT NO ORIGIN IS FOUND,

HOWEVER I THINK IT IS WORTH CELEBRATING!!!!

I JUST LEARNED OF A NEW SCAM, A YOUNG LADIES PHONE WAS STOLEN. THE THIEF CALLED THE PHONE NUMBER

UNDER HER LISTING, “DAD” . WHEN HER DAD ANSWERED THE CALL, HE WAS TOLD THEY HAD HIS DAUGHTER,

WITH A GUN TO HER HEAD, AND WOULD KILL HER IF HE DIDN’T DELIVER MONEY TO THEM.

DAD KEPT HIS COOL, ASKED TO SPEAK TO HIS DAUGHTER, OF COURSE THEY DIDN’T HAVE HER, BUT REPEATED

THEIR THREAT OF SHOOTING HER. HE AGREED TO THEIR DEMANDS, HUNG UP THE PHONE. CALLED HIS

DAUGHTER AT HER HOME PHONE NUMBER, THANKFULLY, SHE WAS HOME, AND THEY PROCEEDED TO CALL THE

POLICE. I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THAT. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW FRIGHTENED THE DAD WAS.

I MYSELF RECEIVED THE GRANDSON IN JAIL PHONE CALL SCAM. THE BOY SAID, DO YOU KNOW WHO THIS IS

GRANDMA? I JUST LAUGHED AND SAID, OH YOU BOYS ALL SOUND ALIKE, WHICH ONE IS THIS? THE KID SAID

BOBBY, OF COURSE HE MUST HAVE SEEN OUR PHONE NUMBER IS LISTED UNDER MY HUSBANDS NAME, ROBERT.

SO I PRETENDED I HAD A GRANDSON NAMED BOBBY, AND LISTENED TO HIM. HE HAD HIS LAWYER CALL ME.

THE LAWYER GAVE ME THE INFORMATION, THE CASE NUMBER AND WHERE TO WIRE THE MONEY.

I JUST LAUGHED AND SAID, AH KEEP THE BRAT IN JAIL. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THEY HUNG UP ON ME.
