March 8-21, 2010 On this thrilling journey of discovery through China’s scenic south, we will see the fantastic countryside around Guilin and then venture off the beaten track in the mountain enclaves of Guangxi and Guizhou for extraordinary cultural opportunities with fascinating ethnic people. Our journey begins in a landscape of steep limestone hills and meandering rivers, the iconic landscape of southern China, whose misty silhouettes beckon travelers from across the world. In Guilin and nearby Yangshuo, farmhouses are set amidst overhanging crags and cormorants catch fsh along the river. We will enjoy a classic river journey on the Li River, as we admire this spectacular landscape. We'll then follow backroads into a remote mountainous area where several of China’s distinctive ethnic minority groups, including the Yao, Dong, and Miao (Hmong), retain traditional lifestyles living in picturesque wooden villages that cling to steep hillsides. The architecture—drum towers and Wind-Rain bridges—is unique, colorful, incredibly photogenic, and fascinating. Continue to the spectacularly terraced rice felds— the Backbone of a Dragon—and see many ethnic villages. We’ll traverse this remote area, far from the Western tourist circuit, with cultural highlights including wooden villages, old stone bridges, sacred banyan groves, and the gracious people. Handicrafts include beautifully-wrought silver ornamentation, hand-stitched textiles of the Miao, and pounded indigo fabric of the Dong. Then fy to Chongqing and visit the amazing Buddhist caves at Dazu. Our adventure will culminate with two nights in the festivity of Hong Kong. $2,995 + $995 air from SFO, RT
