FROM THE PAROCHIAL VICAR, FR. PEDRO MERCADO JR.
In Matthew 28: 18-20 we read that before Jesus ascended into heaven, He told His apostles: “. . . All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Nine days after the Ascension, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday.
Why is this outpouring of the Holy Spirit so important? Even though the apostles had served in Jesus’ ministry, had seen Him perform miracles, and had been chosen by Jesus to be His first disciples, the apostles were still in need of the Holy Spirit. “I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid” (John 14: 25-31). As the baptized, every single one us is called to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ and more importantly to lead others to be baptized and become His disciples. Of course this discipleship begins with our baptism (given authority to preach Jesus), and can be done through having babies baptized, through reading Sacred Scripture, through attending retreats or
helping out in church ministries, but it is complemented through the reception of the Holy Spirit and its fruits and gifts. Although in Baptism every baptized person receives the Holy Spirit, it is through the Sacrament of Confirmation (conferred by the bishop or one of his delegates) that we the confirmed accept firmly our Catholic faith and receive the full outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit: “The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord … [t]hey complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them. They make the faithful docile in readily obeying divine inspirations. … [and t]he fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: ‘charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity’” (CCC, 1831-1832). These gifts and fruits aid us in becoming better Christians by leading us to act more like our Lord. For example, fear of the Lord is not that we are afraid of going to hell but that we are afraid of leading anyone away from God through sin. The less we sin the less we are prone to hurt others and ourselves. The more we ask God to use us as His instruments the better we will serve others and ourselves. Also, by being faithful to God we will seek to do His will, rather than our own. We will live out Jesus’ words "If you love me, you will keep my commandments, and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you al-ways, the Spirit of truth.” (John 14:15-17).
“But you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

(Juan 14:15-17).
Todos ellos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo. Hechos 2.4

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of
our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical
suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your
mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole and
free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and
deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this
through Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen
