PAGE 2 JUNE 9, 2019
Capt. David Glassmire
Happy birthday to the Catholic Church! Happy birthday to
you, who are the body of the Church!
We're all familiar with our own birthdays,
and we celebrate them because they mark the
day of the year in which we entered into this
life. But did you know you have a second birth-
day?
Because you are part of the body of the Church, Pentecost
is the Church's birthday, and yours as well. And like any birth-
day, it's a cause for celebration.
The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty
days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Ho-
ly Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the begin-
ning of their Earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations.
Pentecost is also a Jewish holiday, which the Jews use to
celebrate the end of Passover. Jews celebrate the gift of the
law to Moses at Mt. Sinai on this day. But we, as Catholics
celebrate the birth of our Church.
At Pentecost, the Apostles and their followers were gath-
ered in a room. Jews from all over the world were gathered
with Peter, the leader of the Apostles and the Eleven.
Suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong
driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were
in. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which
parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were
all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different
tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
Christ had promised His Apostles that He would send His
Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of
the Holy Spirit. The Apostles began to preach the Gospel in all
of the languages that the Jews who were gathered there
spoke, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptized.
Working with the Word
Pentecost Sunday
June 9, 2019
Reading I: Acts 2:1-11
Responsorial Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34
Reading II: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13, or Romans 8:8-17
Gospel: John 20:19-23 or John 14:15-16, 23b-26
Focusing the Gospel
Key words and phrases: If, Whoever, Father will love, the
Holy Spirit whom the Father will send
To the point: “If you love me.” “Whoever loves
me.” (emphases added) Our love is always a free choice and,
as human beings, we are never quite sure of our choices.
God’s love, on the other hand, is sure and steady. God contin-
ually sends the Spirit to dwell within us. This indwelling Spirit
empowers us to love with God’s steadfastness. Transformed
by the Spirit, our love moves from “if” to “I can, I choose, I
will.”
Connecting the Gospel
to the Second Reading: Saint Paul enumerates the ef-
fects of the Spirit’s dwelling within us: we belong to Christ, are
made righteous, are given new life, become adopted children
and heirs of God. Here is God’s gift of Love to us: an unprece-
dented relationship made possible by the indwelling of the
Holy Spirit.
to experience: It is so much easier to act with love when
we know we are loved. We can act with love in all times and
places, all situations and circumstances, because we know
we are filled with the Spirit who is God’s love.

To Our Confirmandi:
Blessings and joy as you are sealed with the Holy Spirit.
May you always give “witness to the Holy Spirit” by living a
strong Christian life daily. Keeping the gifts of the Holy Spirit
active in your heart, you will walk in God’s ways.

Musician’s Path to Prayer
Lord, I am humbly in your presence.
Open my heart and my mind. Let me dwell in your Spirit
in the midst of your assembly.
I think of the place where I will worship on Sunday. I recall its many
aromas… I feel myself within it …
I listen … I look …
If I am a singer,
I see the breath support and resonance of my body
my voice projecting from a place deep inside me
If I play an instrument,
I imagine how it feels in my hands
the manuals, pedals, and draw knobs of the organ
the strings and frets of the guitar
the keys of the piano
drum, flute, trumpet, violin
my voice or my instrument resonates
first on its own
then blending with all the others
As I join the song,
I feel the Holy Spirit deep within me
voicing my deepest longing and desire.
Fill us with your Holy Spirit once again,
Rouse your power within us. ~Amen

Father Dave and the Ascension Parish
Parishioners congratulate our native son,
Aaron Kulczyk, on the occasion of his
ordination to the priesthood.
My God bless and keep him in His care.
Bishop Richard Malone anointing Fr. Aaron Kulczyk’s Hands.
Jesus, our great High Priest, hear our humble prayers on
behalf of your newly ordained priest, Father Aaron Kulczyk.
Give him a deep faith, a bright and firm hope, and a burning
love which will ever increase in the course of his priestly life.
In his loneliness, comfort him; in his sorrows, strengthen
him; in his frustrations, point out to him that it is through suf-
fering that the soul is purified. Show him that he is needed
by the Church; he is needed by souls; he is needed for the
work of redemption.
O loving Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Priests, take to
your heart your son who is close to you because of his
priestly ordination, and because of the power which he has
received to carry on the work of Christ in a world which
needs him so much. Be his comfort, be his joy, be his
strength, and especially help him to live and to defend the
ideals of consecrated celibacy. ~ Amen.
