Many, many items. some of value, some pretty odd, guns, tools, saws, tv, stereo, computer, crockpot, cash and coins, tennis racquets, etc, etc, organized crew, many items, many trips, no damage, looked in every drawer shelf cupboard cabinet, has access to every account, ssn, DL#, keys to every vehicle and door. Sheriff says a spate of burglaries in this area, they had to see my “neighborhood watch sign”. Please be aware, this is truly a life changing experience, so far, not for the good.

June 2, 2017 Contacts: OSU Ext. Forest Agent for Klamath & Lake Counties Daniel Leavell, 541-883-7131 Fremont-Winema N.F. Partnership Coordinator Roland Giller, 541-274-1667 CHILOQUIN, Ore.—The Klamath-Lake Forest Health Partnership is reaching out to landowners near Chiloquin and Agency Lake to reduce wildland fire danger, assist effective fire response, and restore wildlife habitat and forest health. The effort is called the Chiloquin Community Forest and Fire Project, and includes about 32,000 acres owned by about 3,200 landowners. Many of the landowners live in Chiloquin or eight nearby subdivisions. Both the Chiloquin and Klamath County Wildfire Protection Plans identify the Chiloquin Community Forest and Fire Project area as high-risk for wildland fire. The Klamath-Lake Forest Health Partnership (KLFHP) will hold its first Chiloquin Community Forest and Fire Project workshop on June 13 from noon until 2 p.m. in the Chiloquin Community Center, located in downtown Chiloquin at 1401 S. First St. The workshop will focus on initial outreach efforts to landowners in the Rainbow Park Subdivision, located north of Chiloquin. The KLFHP plans to contact landowners, then educate them about fire resistance and forest health. It then hopes to coordinate projects on private land simultaneously, or shortly after the Fremont-Winema National Forest completes treatments. Timber harvests, chainsaw thinning or prescribed burns that might not otherwise be feasible could then occur on adjacent private land. The Chiloquin Community Forest and Fire Project is adjacent to the 97,500-acre Lobert Restoration Project on the Fremont-Winema National Forest, and is an opportunity to complete cross-boundary treatments on public and private land. “Fire knows no boundaries,” said OSU Extension Forest Agent Daniel Leavell, Ph.D. “Simultaneously treating private and public lands before the next big fire makes sense from a forest health, and public and firefighter safety perspective. But, it all hinges on landowner cooperation.” KLFHP objectives include developing a landowner list, creating a fire response map, prioritizing treatment areas, and assisting landowners interested in fire prevention and forest health treatments. KLFHP members will begin contacting landowners this summer through telephone calls, direct mail, email, social media and workshops. They hope to foster landowner interest, obtain contact information and offer to complete forest health inventories of individual lots. According to Leavell, Oregon State University Extension Service funds are now available to conduct inventories and fire risk mapping that can provide landowners forest health information and recommended treatments. Members of the KLFHP with forest health and fire suppression expertise will be available to assist landowners with these efforts. The KLFHP has been actively addressing forest health issues in Klamath and Lake Counties since 1995. It is a non-profit organization comprised of private forest landowners, forestry consultants, conservation groups, local fire districts, and state and federal agencies.

As of Thursday June 1st, all outdoor burning within the Chiloquin Fire and Rescue District is prohibited. Here are some helpful hints to help protect your home during Wildland Fire Season. Action steps for around your home: • CLEAR leaves and other vegetative debris from roofs, gutters, porches and decks. This helps prevent embers from igniting your home. • REMOVE dead vegetation and other items from under your deck or porch, and within 10 feet of the house. • SCREEN in areas below patios and decks with wire mesh to prevent debris and combustible materials from accumulating. • REMOVE flammable materials (wood piles, propane tanks) within 30 feet of your home’s foundation and outbuildings, including garages and sheds. If it can catch fire, don’t let it touch your house, deck or porch. • Wildfire can spread to tree tops. PRUNE trees so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 feet from the ground. • KEEP your lawn hydrated and maintained. If it is brown, cut it down to reduce fire intensity. Dry grass and shrubs are fuel for wildfire. • Don’t let debris and lawn cuttings linger. DISPOSE of these items quickly to reduce fuel for fire. • INSPECT shingles or roof tiles. Replace or repair the shingles that are loose or missing to prevent ember penetration. • COVER exterior attic vents with metal wire mesh no larger than 1/8 inch to prevent sparks from entering the home. • ENCLOSE eaves and screen soffit vents using 1/8 mesh metal screening to prevent ember entry. Costa Rican treehopper Umbelligerus sp Tree-Climbing Goats Keep the ‘Desert Gold’ Growing Scientists have discovered that the domesticated goats in southern Morocco benefit the argan trees, Argania spinosa, by spitting out the seeds of the fruits they eat, which helps in seed dispersal. Argan trees play an important role in southern Morocco acting as a barrier for the Sahara Desert, and providing locals with wood, food, medicine and other materials. Argan oil, sometimes called “desert gold,” has also emerged as an international luxury commodity, prized for its supposed anti-aging and conditioning properties for hair and skin. Tree-climbing goats play a crucial role dispersing nuts from argan trees, ensuring the success of future generations of this valuable resource. Read the article

Millions Of Pieces Of Plastic Are Piling Up On An Otherwise Pristine Pacific Island in the Pitcairn Islands. More than 37 million pieces of plastic debris have accumulated on a remote island in the South Pacific, thousands of miles from the nearest city, according to estimates from researchers who documented the accumulating trash. The island is uninhabited and visited by scientists only once or twice a decade, according to the University of Tasmania. But ocean currents bring a steady stream of plastic trash from around the world, from litter swept into storm drains to debris dropped off fishing boats. But the scale of the problem extends far beyond this isolated island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. In their paper, the researchers note that the masses of trash on Henderson Island "account for only 1.98 seconds' worth of the annual global production of plastic." Researchers say Henderson Island is polluted with the highest density of plastic trash ever recorded in the field. Read the story Jennifer Lavers/University of Tasmania

Spun Glass Caterpillar Isochaetes beutenmuelleri, the spun glass slug moth, is a moth of the Limacodidae family. It is found in the United States from New York to Florida and west to Colorado and Texas The name comes from the appearance of their pupal stage, when they are very nearly transparent, and covered in spiny hairs containing poison that can cause dermatitis, as is not uncommon for other so-called stinging caterpillars

Make it a point to visit with the new owners of Fish Lake Resort. Snarf down a great meal, and scope out all the activities the lake lodge has to offer. Lake of the Woods Resort is hopping. The lodge is going full speed with breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings. Eric has the pizza parlor at the Marina going strong, especially with the new offering of draft beer. And the activities! Friday night vintage movies, Saturday BBQ & Band, and Sunday afternoon live easy listening music on the patio, not to mention the fireworks, races, car show, and lots of other events. Visit their website often to see what’s going on there. It’s a lot! Harriman Springs Resort serves all 3 meals a day Wednesday through Sunday. Rent a boat and spend a day on the lake, or catch that big one. In addition to offering fuel, liquor, and last-minute items, Scott and Camille at Odessa Market are now stocking fresh vegetables. Stop by for their new supply of garden bounty. And here’s a deal for you. They’re starting a new opportunity the 2nd week of June—Saturday community swap meet! Contact them to rent a space in their parking lot to sell your wares. For only $5 a day, you can capture highway traffic buyers, as well as locals, from 8 AM to 1 PM every Saturday throughout the summer. Move over Quartzite, here comes Rocky Point! Call now to reserve your spot. Gardens of Joy is just what you need for blossoms, native & acclimated plants, trees, & shrubs, as well as colorful annuals. And Joy knows what survives here, what the critters will leave alone, and what you need to do to have an oasis of beauty in your very own yard. Liz of Crystalwood Lodge is again teaming up with Bonnie Nork to offer a gluten-free cooking (and eating) retreat on Aug. 18 – 20. Meetings are the 2nd Wed of each month at 9:30. Meetings are open to all. We have a pot luck each month along with the lessons presented by a member. For the location and directions to the next meeting, please call Sandie Bolyard at 541-892-2336. Locally, FCE raises money for college scholarships for our Chiloquin High School Seniors. Money is raised through fund-raising projects such as a Thanksgiving turkey dinner fixings raffle with tickets being sold at Kirchers Hardware; Christmas Boutique at the Chiloquin Community Center; Kaleidoscope of Learning at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. We are very active in our community and you will find FCE volunteers at many local events. Oregon FCE is a non-profit organization of volunteers who have worked on such issues as improving sanitary requirements in hospitals, women’s labor laws, requirements for high school teachers, and funding for the state library. Nationally, we began the school hot lunch program and pushed for bookmobile libraries. FCE asked for and got money from the legislature to fund an OSU research study on the dental caries problem in Oregon. We’ve studied our county governments and monitored their activities; worked on county and state fair boards to improve their quality; sponsored programs on rural road safety, farm safety, home safety, bike safety, Defensive Driving courses, campaigns to get the drunk drivers off the road, and child seatbelt laws. Current educational programs focus on the environment, children and television, literacy, and global issues. Current concerns include addressing the growing need for food banks, for shelters for the homeless, and for reducing the violence against women and children. Oregon FCE members donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars to these causes.

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Evening volunteer: The library is open until 6pm on Tuesdays, Weds and Thursdays. We would really appreciate a volunteer who could help us out with closing tasks for the last hour or so on these days (especially Tuesdays). 2. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. 3. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 4. Honor collections: These are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”.
