Slide 4: Encourage sts to look at the jerseys the players are wearing if they have trouble identifying the players. Ask sts if there are any other players not on this list that they admire. On June 21st, eliminated teams were: Spain, England, Cameroon, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Australia.

Slide 5: Work on pronunciation of items and try to get sts to put the expressions in sentences to make sure they understand how they’re used. Here are some suggested answers for the Portuguese equivalents:

1) a win / a loss / a draw – vitória / derrota / empate; 2) an own goal – gol contra; 3) a foul – falta; 4) the lineup – escalação; 5) a referee – árbitro; 6) the team captain – capitão do time; 7) a coach – técnico; 8) an assistant referee – bandeirinha; 9) a wall – barreira; 10) an offside offence – impedimento; 11) a corner kick - escanteio

Slide 6: Some of the things sts might like to mention are:

1)Marcelo scored an own goal against Brazil; Thiago Silva is our team captain; The referee awarded Brazil a penalty kick that was considered controversial because of a supposed foul committed on Fred.

2) Netherlands defeated Australia; Robben scored three goals in the competition so far and he is one of the top scorers; Australia was awarded a penalty kick and took the lead on the game for about 4 minutes, after which the Netherlands tied the game.

3) It was a draw; Ghana had more shots on target (10x6); striker Klose scored his 15th goal in World Cups, tying the record for most career goals at the tournament, held by former Brazil star Ronaldo.
