    Parshat Nasso June 4, 2011 2 Sivan, 5771

Parshas Naso is thelongest parsha in theTorah, containing 176verses. (It is interestingto note that the longesttractate in Talmud --Bava Basra -- also has176 blatt (folios, two-sided pages), and thelongest chapter inTanach, the Bible --Tehillim (Psalms) 119 --also has 176 verses.)When I was a youngchild, I remember feelingbad for the Bar Mitzvahboy who had to readParshas Naso. The truthof the matter is that interms of being a Ba'alKoreh, Parshas Naso isa rather simple parsha, because a large part of it

    is basically repetition.

The end of the Parshacontains the recitation ofthe various sacrificesoffered by the Princes ofeach of the Tribes onconsecutive days inhonor of the dedicationof the Mishkan. TheTorah tells us the exactoffering of every singlePrince. However, as it

    turns out, every Prince

brought exactly the sameoffering. For 12 Princes(Nesiim), one after the other, the Torah tells us verbatimthe same thing. So the BarMitzvah boy doesn't have tolearn so many new pesukim, after all.

There is a fascinatingMedrash on this portion ofthe Nesiim. The Medrashrelates that the Nasi fromYehudah, which was the firsttribe to make an offering, had it easy. He could offerwhatever he desired. Thesecond Nasi -- Nesanel benTzuar of the Tribe ofYissachar -- was faced witha dilemma: what was hegoing to bring?

We can compare thisdilemma to the followingsituation: There will be 12Bar Mitzvahs in shul, oneweek after the other. Thefirst Bar Mitzvah serves afruit cup, a quarter of achicken, a piece of kugle, some carrots, and somechocolate cake for desert. That is Bar Mitzvah -- Week1.

    The next week is Bar

Rabbi Frand on Parshat NasoMitzvah, Week 2. Whatdoes he serve?

"I should serve the samechicken, the same kugle? That makes no sense! I'mnot an imitator. That is notme. I'll do it differently. I'llserve chicken cutlets andbroccoli..." The person willplan how to make eachcourse a little different, alittle better.

The poor third guy hasalready seen the chickenand the chicken cutlets. What can he do? Heobviously must servebeef!

We can readilyunderstand that by the

time we get to BarMitzvah number 12, hereally needs to outdohimself...

The Medrash says that this is what went through themind of Nesanel ben Tzuar: If I try to do different thanthe Tribe of Yehudah, if I try to 'one-up' Nachshon benAminadav, then the Nasi after me and the Nasi afterhim will face a spiral of escalating sacrifices, escalatingcosts, until day 12. Imagine what the Nasi will have tobring by then!

Nesanel ben Tzuar reasoned as follows: We know ourown nature. Everyone will argue that his offering wasbetter. This will lead to Lashon Hara and hatred and

    jealousy. We know our nature.

So, Nesanel ben Tzuar did a tremendous thing. Hebrought _exactly_ the same offering. He set the tone --everyone is the same.

What was G-d's response? The Medrash says anunbelievable thing

There is an inviolate rule that a Public Offering canoverride Shabbos prohibitions, but a Private Offeringcannot. No individual offering is ever brought on theSabbath. If that is true, the sequence of offerings of thePrinces should have been suspended on Shabbos, since they were Private Offerings. In this case, however, G-d allowed the offering to be brought evenon Shabbos because it was like a Public Offering.

Since all of the offerings were brought exactly like oneanother to maintain the sense of community (Tzibur),peace, and unity -- this was a Korban Yachid (PrivateOffering) that was infused with the spirit of a KorbanTzibur (Public Offering). It was a Korban Yachid thatwas brought to keep the Tzibur intact. G-d said -- as itwere -- "For Me, this is considered a CommunalOffering".

There is a great ethical lesson here. This teaches usthe importance of communal unity and the importanceof communal peace. We see what G-d's response is toone who does things to promote such peace, unity, andharmony. A person that keeps a Tzibur together is one
