Yo soy el Pan vivo, bajado del cielo. Si uno come de este pan, vivirá para siempre;

y el pan que yo le voy a dar, es mi carne por la vida del mundo.

Jn. 6, 51

One of our very generous donors recently asked us why so much of the money we spend goes to assist people with their rent? Surely there are other needs in Midland besides rent. Well, yes there are, but true, the majority of the money we spend goes to assist with rent and we do so primarily because there are very, very few agencies in Midland today that will assist with rent, and many of them have limits on how much they can spend on each case. Some of these agencies will help with rent but not with mortgages. Whether it is a rent or a mortgage, the need is still the same…keeping a family in their home, so we do not make that differentiation, and we lump it all under the heading of “rent.” Also, rents are rising at an alarming rate in Midland right now (some apartments as much as $400-$500 per month) and it is hard for many families to have to come up with that much extra money when they have had no warning (they find out when they have to sign a new lease). So we are very much committed to helping with rent and mortgages, and we are blessed that you give us the ability to reach as many people as we do. Still, we also help with utilities, medical, legal and pretty much any other “legitimate” need that comes along. Here are some examples of people we have helped in the month of May with medical needs: We helped a young many with doctor’s fees for knee surgery that he was undergoing. His insurance covered the majority of the hospital expense however a fairly large portion of the doctor’s fee was not covered. He had not been working due to the injury and he used the very last of his money to pay for his June rent. We were able to cover the fee and he was able to get his surgery scheduled. A woman came to us for assistance with her rent. She has been sick and has had extensive visits to Lubbock to doctors who are trying to find what is wrong with her. Her kidneys were shutting down. We have known this woman for quite some time and were shocked to see her condition – she had lost way too much weight and looked much, much older than she should have. We paid her fee to see an urologist (as well as her rent) and we pray for her recovery. We helped a young woman for a process called corneal crosslinking which will hopefully prevent her need for a cornea transplant and/or prevent her from losing her vision. We need to pray for her successfully surgery as well. A man who lost the lower portion of a leg due to diabetes was in need of a prosthetic leg. We work closely with Allen Orthotics on cases like this, and after insurance we covered that portion not covered by Medicare. The man lives on a limited income and struggles just to pay his rent. These cases amounted to $8,896 that was paid out to help with medical in May, and that does not include the many prescriptions that we fill each month for people who do not have Medicare or Medicaid. We are blessed to be able to help these people with these very critical needs and we thank you for giving us the opportunity to do so. May God bless you abundantly!
