When we came to receive our First Communion (and Confession!), it is almost certain that you were prepared by the nuns at the school and the role of your parents was to make sure that you were there at the appropriate time, cleaned, polished and dressed in white! However, the policy of the Archdiocese (for the past 30 years!) is that Sacramental Initiation is to be Parish-based rather than school-based, and the ones who prepare the children for the Sacraments should be their parents, not their teachers.. This is not in any way meant to be a criticism of the school system or the ability of teachers. On the contrary, we recognize the invaluable contribution that teachers make in educating the children both by word and example. One of the reasons we are so confident about this different approach is that these teachers can help us by sharing their resources and supporting parents who aren’t quite so confident about preparing their children for the Sacraments. In fact, when I put together my first Parish-based programs for Sacramental preparation at Wavell Heights in the early Nineties, the first people I approached were the teachers at the local school whom I asked to share with me their best lessons in the area. We then built on this foundation to put together a very successful program which both parents and children seemed to enjoy. However, there are a number of reasons why it is not good to have the Sacramental Program tied to the School. First, it turns the reception of the Sacraments into an “Assembly Line” reality. When they get to Grade 3, whether they and their families have contact with Church or not, whether they go to Mass or not, whether the children are ready for it or not, children and families have tremendous pressure on them to receive the Sacraments “because everybody else in the class is”. It is not a good idea for somebody to make their First Communion if it is also likely to be their last. Second, the progressive introduction of children to the Sacraments includes discernment as to their readiness, which is not simply a matter of age. Parents, pastor and teacher all have a role in ascertaining that the child has achieved appropriate faith development and that adequate faith support is assured. Third, it is primarily the Parish which is the faith community that we belong to throughout life. School plays an important part for significant stages of our life, but then we move on. So it is appropriate that the Parish be responsible for and ultimately involved in the Sacramental preparation and presentation of children. Fourthly, and perhaps most importantly, is the fact that parents are the primary educators of their children in the ways of faith. The role of parents in preparing their children for reception of the Sacraments for the first time cannot be over-emphasised. Anything a priest, nun or a teacher does can only be supplementary to the basic training that a child receives at home. We respectfully acknowledge the

Turrbal people, as the traditional owners

and caretakers of the land which is the

Toowong Catholic Parish.

We acknowledge the Elders, past and

present. May we, too, be good stewards of

this land.

A New Way of Doing It ?

Apart from the change in the order and the normal age at which children should receive the Sacraments of Initiation, there is a significant change in HOW they are prepared to receive the Sacraments.

When we came to receive our First Communion (and Confession!), it is almost certain that you were prepared by the nuns at the school and the role of your parents was to make sure that you were there at the appropriate time, cleaned, polished and dressed in white!

However, the policy of the Archdiocese (for the past 30 years!) is that Sacramental Initiation is to be Parish-based rather than school-based, and the ones who prepare the children for the Sacraments should be their parents, not

their teachers..

PARISH INFORMATION

UPDATE ON AUCHENFLOWER SITE As you will have noticed the area in the front of the Church is getting close to finished, with planting and landscaping undertaken during the week. When this is finished, there will be an approximately 6 weeks break while the new stage of the project is signed off on. So we are expecting the next stage of the development (which will mean the back of the Church will be totally inaccessible) to begin in mid—July. Because of limited parking on site, we are asking that you respect that the parking in front of the Church is reserved for those with problems of mobility although the drive can be accessed for drop off. Entrance to the driveway is via the Ridley St side of the driveway with exit from the end closest to Dowling St. Hopefully, there will be sufficient street parking in Harriet, McIlwraith & Ridley Streets for Sunday Mass goers. These provide free parking on Sundays. Weekdays there should be sufficient parking on site for our Masses.

NEW PRINCIPAL FOR ST IGNATIUS SCHOOL. Just over a week ago, Duncan Maitland was appointed Principal of St Ignatius School. Duncan has fulfilled the role of Acting Principal since the beginning of the year, following the move of Ms Roycelyn Wilden, and his appointment, effective immediately, is great news for all concerned with the school. He brings a great sense of Church and the importance of Parish—School relationships to the role. Welcome, Duncan!
