Cllr. David Savage Elected Mayor of YoughalBy Michael Twomey

Cllr. David Savage was elected as Mayor of Youghal at the TownCouncil’s Annual General Meeting last Wednesday evening. Cllr.Savage won a majority with five votes. Nominated by Cllrs.Linehan-Foley and the outgoing Mayor, Cllr. Revins, DavidSavage took his elevated seat on the bench, seeing off competitionfrom Cllr. McLellan (nominated by Cllr. Hennessy) and Cllr.Beecher (nominated by Cllr. Murray). Mayor Savage thanked themembers on accepting the post. He expressed his pleasure at beingpart of the ’democratic’ process. "It’s nice to see democracy atwork. Everyone has a right to go forward and now I hope that wecan go forward together," he said. Following thanks to the ’excel-lent Town Clerk, Liam Ryan’ and the ’ever present’ CountyManager, Declan Daly, Cllr. Savage addressed the members."There’s a great sense of pride and joy and honour in being theMayor of the town you grew up in. I’d like to pay tribute to Cllrs.Linehan-Foley, Casey and Revins for their commitment and ded-ication as the previous Mayors of this Council. We owe them hugeappreciation for that. They have raised the bar so high it will behard to step up to that standard," he said. Looking to the yearahead the new Mayor cited two programmes as of particularimportance to him. "We are going through exciting times inYoughal. We have the Heritage and Rejuvenation Plan and theDevelopment Plan for the town and I’m looking forward to co-ordinating my role with that. I also hope that when I look back intwelve months time we can say we achieved something," headded. As part of his opening address as Chairman of the Councilthe new Mayor had a novel proposal for his unsuspecting col-leagues. "One thing I would like each member to consider is tolook at what you have achieved and what you would like toachieve, call it a working document if you like. We can worktogether on these so we can go forward as a Council with fullknowledge that we tried to deliver on our promises," he said. TheMayor made an attempt to clarify his request when Cllr. Linehan-Foley questioned the proposal by expressing some confusion tothe desired outcome. "There is nothing that I would say that Iachieved by myself. I don’t work like that. Anything that isachieved is achieved by all nine Councillors. My personal agen-das are similar to the other Councillors," she stated. The Mayorexplained that prior to the local elections Councillors would havehad a number of things they wanted to achieve. He cited theseissues as separate to those that ’go under the general workings ofthe group’. Cllr. Murray referred to the Mayor’s proposal as a ’wishlist’ but Cllr. Beecher also sought clarification as to the Mayor’sintent. "I would just like to know a little more about it," he said.Mayor, Savage suggested that he may have left his proposal forthe next meeting for longer discussion and more transparency butconcluded that his idea was to have ’our own personal, internalaudit’.

New Mayor of Youghal Mr. David Savage with fellow councillors, Town Clerk Liam Ryan and Geraldine O’Connell YTC staff member

Newly-elected Mayor of Youghal Mr. David Savage with his wife Louise, childrenKate, Dean and Jane, his parents Ger and Helen and his sister Marguerite

The Town Clerk pointed out that ’individual’ agendas that do notcome to fruition are dealt with in ’unresolved motions’. It wasagreed to revisit the proposal at a later date. The Mayor thenreceived wishes of goodwill from the members. The post ofDeputy Mayor was then decided with Cllr. Revins being unop-posed under the proposition of Cllr. Linehan-Foley and secondedby Cllr. Savage. Prior to the appointment of Cllr. Savage as Mayor,Cllr. Revins vacated the chair in the warmth of glowing praisefrom his colleagues with the Cllr.’s ’fairness’ and ’commitment’being the main tenet of their appraisal. Other expressions of valueplaced on his office included - ’diligent’, ’wonderful’, ’proper gen-tleman’ and ’great ambassador’. Cllr. Revins cited the opening ofthe leisure centre and swimming pool and the heritage conferenceon walled towns as the highlights of his year as Chairman of theCouncil. He expressed unequivocal gratitude to Council staffreserving ’special thanks’ for staff member, Geraldine O’ Connell."She has been fantastic to me and we spoke every week," he said.He also afforded thanks to the Town Clerk for ’making my jobeasy’. The outgoing Mayor added that it had ’been a good year’ andhoped he had ’been fair’. He admitted that the role of Mayor is a’hard one’ and juggling family life and business in conjunction withthe public engagements had its demands. He did not allow theopportunity to thank his wife, Kate pass by for her support over thepast twelve months. While reflecting on the pressures of the post,Cllr. Revins could not hide his obvious pride when he added."Youghal is my home, we are all in this together." Following themeeting, Mayor, Savage took a moment to reflect on his own wishlist. Asked if there was anything he would like to oversee in histime on the chair his immediate response was to ’carry out thisoffice with the same respect as those who have gone before me’,and in an ideal world? " to see new jobs for Youghal and the open-ing of the Youghal-Cork railway line."

GALLAGHERS TERRACE -PRESSURE KEPT ON

CORK COUNTY COUNCILCork County Council officials have again come under pressure todeal with the sewage situation in Gallaghers Terrace, Youghalsooner rather than later. Cllr Martin Hallinan supported byCouncillor Barbara Murray and Councillor Noel Collins refusedto accept that the situation could remain as it is for another fouryears until major new sewage works take place in Youghal. I am embarrassed to be bringing this up 12 months after it wasfirst raised as a health hazard said Cllr Hallinan. This is a healthhazard affecting mostly elderly residents and must be dealt withpromptly. It is all the more urgent considering the County Councilengineer is unable to locate where the sewage from two housesactually goes to. After a robust and frank discussion the engineer pledged to goaway and see if he can raise the necessary funds to do the remedi-al works. Be sure we will not be fobbed off on this one said CllrHallinan. We want action not promises one this one

THE PASSING OF ST. MARYSBRASS AND REED BAND

By Michael Twomey

The recent placing of Youghal’s defunct St. Mary’s Brass and ReedBand practice room on the market has effectively closed the bookon the history of the band. The band, which preserves many mem-ories of another age, had fallen into serious decline over the pastdecade. Former Chairman, Seamus Murphy reflected this week onthe triumphs and struggles of what was for the musicians a labourof love. "It marks the end of the Youghal Brass and Reed band. We arevery saddened by it because it represents the passing of a piece ofYoughal’s history. We had hundreds of people pass through thathall some who have gone on to be professionals," he said. Thatachievement is too often understated. Indeed, Many young fledg-ing musicians received his/her first musical lessons through theband’s training programme while Pat and Mark O’Keeffe, BarryLawlor and Adrian Murphy all became professionals instrumen-talists.Seamus admitted that the demise of the band was in some waysinevitable. "Our problem is our age. When we started out kids did-n’t have the distractions they have today such as playstations. Itwould be a lot more difficult to get kids into a cold hall now. Also,if a kid is learning an instrument they can pick it up quickly butyou could be blowing a brass instrument for six months beforeyou get something out of it," he added. The band started up during the Christmas period of 1969 when agroup of Youghal musicians who had their own instruments cametogether to perform Christmas carols; a practice that holds partic-ular sentimental value for many Youghal people. Early the following year, 1970, St. Mary,s Brass and Reed Bandwas formed at a meeting in the League of the Cross Hall. TheBand made its first official public performance at the EucharisticProcession of the same year. The original founding members were, Andrew Cronin, DenisKelleher(conductor), Fred Dickinson, Jack Forrest, Ned Clancy,Jim Roche and Billy O Connell. In the following years the band became very active and performedat numerous events. The Band was quite successful at competi-tions winning in Cobh in 1979 and then had victories at ClonakiltyBand Festival in 1983, 1989 and 1993. As a result of the 2003 vic-tory the Band was invited to participate in the Senior Section ofthe Clonakilty Championships competing against Bands from allover Ireland.Indeed the Band was at such a high standard of musicianship thatit entered the National Championships in Athlone in 2002.The purchase of the former Youghal Carpets Canteen in StoreStreet as a Bandroom in 1985 marked a peak in the band’s for-tunes. The Bandroom was officially opened by the Chairman ofYoughal UDC, the late Denis Murphy in June 1986. Bands fromall over Cork and Waterford came to Youghal to perform at theevent.Seamus said upkeep was not easy for a band that did not have theluxury of the sort of grant aids available to associations today. "Weoften had 50 - 60 people in the room at a time. The members oftenpaid for the gas to heat the room out of their own pockets. We did-n’t have funding and we funded our own trips through flag daysand the like." St. Mary’s Brass and Reed band made their last public perform-ance at the St.Patrick’s Day Parade in 2003. Despite the band’s demise, Seamus believes the discipline of thegenre can continue. "Brass and reed music can survive inYoughal. Three bands from Dungarvan competed in the countycompetition in Clonakilty because they are well organized andthey ran a programme through the local school and that’s probablythe direction to go," he concluded.

Youghal Badminton Club The Division 6 mixed team recently secured their second cup ofthe season when capturing the Cork Mixed Handicap Cup title inMahon on Sunday 13th May against Churchtown of North Cork.It was a difficult competition format for the team and in the finalhad to concede a 10 point start in each game. It was a highly com-petitive final and as in previous matches it went right down to thewire. In the end the match finished all square with 3 victories apiece and the verdict was decided on a countback. Thankfully, thisworked in Youghal’s favour by approximately 30 aces. The victo-ry capped a great season for the club having already won the leaueDivision 6 County title a few weeks earlier. The team memberswhose dedication throughout the long season ensured the successof the club were: Marie Mason, Brighid Galvin, Tara Barron,Caroline Davis, Sadie Doyle, SeÆn-Paul Grahame team captain,Brendan Galvin, Ken Healy and vice-captain Tommy Roche. The presentation of the County Cups took place in the ImperialHotel in Cork and the club’s success was celebrated long into thenight. The cups will be on display in the GAA hall when the bad-minton season starts again in September. We will be hoping torecruit further new members at that stage and the aim is to be in aposition to enter more teams into competition representing theclub. A more comprehensive Club Committee has been put inplace for the coming season to focus on getting the maximum ben-efit for all the members from the clubs resources. A special wordof thanks must go to Marie Mason and Caroline Davis for theirvery hard in this regard for the past season. The club would alsolike to extend a special word of thanks again to all the support wehave received from Timmy Mason. All the advice and guidancereceived from the badminton guru himself Martin Prendergast wasalso much appreciated! Finally, the club would like to wishBrighid Galvin all the best on her travels down under and we hopeto see her back playing with the club again in the future.

LOCALS GET THE WINDUP OVER SLUDGE SMELL.

By Christy Parker Residents and businesses in the vicinity of Youghal civic amenitysite (usually known as ’the dump’) at Foxhole have been enduringdiscomfort from obnoxious smells from the facility in recentmonths. Last week saw another flurry of phone calls and com-plaints to Cork County Council as the prevailing winds wafted thewoeful odour across the adjacent Industrial Estate and beyond. Due to its landfill facility, the EPA licensed the site lastSeptember, to accept up to 9,700 tons of waste-water sludge (dry-ish sewerage). This has arrived from waste water treatment plantsthroughout County Cork, though according to site manager JohnPaul O’Neill, it has "averaged about 300 tons per month" which isfar short of the permitted quota. The sludge is unloaded and tipped into a fully lined area and thusthe terrible smell is released. Mr. O’Neill says prevalent south-westerly winds have ’normally carried it towards the bay butrecently easterly winds have carried it towards the town". He con-firms there have been several complaints in recent weeks, partic-ularly since April. The manager says that since January they have "reduced ourintake considerably and are trying to divert our remaining cus-tomers to source treatment elsewhere. There are other technolo-gies besides landfill for treating sludge nowadays. I expect theproblem to be fully resolved shortly". The EPA says it visited the site last April on foot of complaints andhaving conducted an odour assessment, "is liaising with Cork Co.Council to ensure that the necessary management practices are inplace to reduce the nuisance. The Agency is satisfied that progressis being made to eliminate the causes and protect the environ-ment", said a spokesperson.Youghal Town and Cork Co. Councillor Barbara Murray says Mr.Lucey has assured her the problem is being addressed. She adds,"This isn’t suitable for a tourist town and I certainly don’t like tothink that the smell is the first impression a visitor to Youghalgets". Meanwhile it appears that Cork County Council is in the processof advising clients to send their sludge elsewhere while bidingtime to allow them find such alternatives. Unfortunately SeniorCounty Civil Engineer Ted Lucey declined to come to the phonelast week to clarify what exactly the Co. Council are doing, inpractical terms, to assist this process. A spokeswoman on hisbehalf said ’it’s a matter for individual waste water managementcentres’.The Youghal landfill is expected to reach capacity and close with-in two years but even then trips to the seaside by sludge areunlikely to cease. One "alternative" destination surely being con-sidered by the Co. Council’s clients is the adjacent AVR treatmentcentre. Granted licence under contentious circumstances, it issoon due to be fully operational. Being an indoor facility, it hasbeen argued that odours will be contained. As Bob Dylan mightobserve, the veracity or otherwise of that, will shortly "be blowingin the wind." Lets hope it blows the right way.

Bonfire Night was always cel-ebrated in Youghal with bonfires in different parts of the townbut these customs and traditions are largely ignored nowadays. The embers of this long tradition have become a burning or moreaccurately a non-burning issue. The photograph shows every-body enjoying the annual spectacle of the bonfire in the plotSarsfield Terrace back in 1983.

A CELEBRATIONof the VISUAL ARTS

Youghal Visual Arts FestivalBy Michael Twomey

Youghal has had its fair share of summer festivals inthe past but few have lasted long enough to establishannual tourist attraction. The short-lived and muchmaligned Summertime Festival has fallen by the way-side due to lack of financial support. Others to sufferthe same fate were the ’Busking Festival’, ’WalterRaleigh Festival’ and ’Maritime Festival’. All of whichbrightens the spotlight on the quiet but growing impor-tance of the Youghal Visual Arts Festival. Now in itssecond year, the festival is benefiting from the bur-geoning development of countrywide events supportedby the Arts Council under the Small Festivals Schemefor 2007. The Youghal Visual Arts Festival committeehas received 3,000 to continue where the inauguralevent left off last year. Youghal was only one of 175applicants under the scheme for 2007. na McCarthy,Arts Council Programme Manager, Festivals andEvents explained. "These events and festivals are cru-cially important in providing arts programmes all overthe country. The growth in the number of high qualityapplications is indicative of the vibrancy in the arts, especially at local level. It is really exciting that some

level. It is really exciting that some festivals areexpanding while many more are emerging, with virtu-ally every county in Ireland represented." The successof Youghal Visual Arts Festival 2006 vindicates suchopinion, the highlights of which were the children’sexhibition at St. Mary’s Collegiate Church and the’walking gallery’, which exhibited the works of invitedartists in shop windows through the town’s main street. The mile long gallery will again be

a central attraction this year. In addition, a centralgallery will be opened with a themed exhibition enti-tled ’Elements and Antics’. The Central Gallery will behoused in the Mall Arts Centre situated at the riversideof the town hall. Visitors will have the opportunity toview quality artwork from local, national and interna-tional artists. Other venues to exhibit art will include, the Library, Community Centre and local churches. A timetable of artist led workshops is being compiledat present. The workshops will be open to all membersof the public from beginner to advanced from child toadult. These workshops are heavily subsidised by thefestival. The White Gables art studio on Strand Streethas been enlarged to allow the daily workshops to takeplace. In addition to all this there will be a watercolourpainting competition and special feature installation. Atotal of 73 artists have now been accepted with bigname artists Pauline Bewick and John Nolan on exhibi-tion. Festival Manager, Amanda Hogan said a newaspect to this year’s festival would benefit artists seek-ing to develop a professional career. "On Thursday the19th we are running an artists seminar entitled ’artistsquest for professional development. It is to help artistmove from the amateur level to the professional level. We have a number of guest speakers presenting talkson developing a career, Una McCarthy of the ArtsCouncil, Margaret Organ the Waterford Arts Officerand we hope to have Pauline Bewick’s agent. A lot ofartists need to know how to take the next step or evenhow to work with an agent so the seminar should bevery helpful."The festival’s success has surprised locals and even thecommittee itself. Amanda explained. "We face thesame problem that a lot of festivals face and that is rais-ing local money. The difference with us is that we don’task local businesses for money. We just ask that theygive space in their windows for the artists work." TheCommittee secures its funds from a variety of sources.Along with the Arts Council grant they receive moneyfrom the arts department of Cork County Council andFailte Ireland. However, Amanda cited fundraising as acrucial element in making sure the festival continueswhere others have faded. "We want to give back some-thing to the people who contribute. If somebody givesmoney then they get something for it, for example, wewill hold a fundraising concert at the Walter RaleighHotel," she added. The benefit concert is on Friday22nd June with Bobby Lee and Friends, The LazyRiver Band and performances by Ceoltas Si. Entry is7euro doors open at 8pm.The Youghal Visual Arts Festival will run from the 14thof July to the 22nd.

Tourist Guide to Services &The fact that CeoltaSi was chosen by theMexican Embassy torepresent Ireland atthe very prestigious ’O l l i n k a nInternational WorldCultures Festival’this April, massivelyendorses the reputa-tion and authenticityof the show. To beasked to deliver alecture on Irish tra-ditional music, its roots and how it has survived is the ultimateseal of approval. The prestigious festival proposes "a permanentdialogue between nations and people who have kept their ritualsand traditions. "This foray to Mexico followed hot on the heels ofa wonderful venture to Wales in March. Ceolta Si entertained inthe Welsh Sennad (parliament) in Cardiff, again by invitation.Another key element of the success of Ceolta Si over the years liesin the fact that there is no age barrier; Young and old mingle com-fortably in the laid back, friendly atmosphere of the summershows.Comhaltas Youghal is a voluntary, not for profit organisation.Any funds generated through the groups performances are putback into the branch, which provides weekly music lessons forchildren and adults; runs an outreach program to local schools andco - ordinates other activities such as weekly step dancing and setdancing classes, plus a local radio show, regular concerts andshows. Aura Youghal Leisure Centre celebratesprestigious Overall Winner award at ’O2

Ability Awards 2007’Aura Youghal Leisure Centre was the toast of success at the ’O2Ability Awards 2007’ in Dublin this week when it was named asthe national Overall Winner in the private sector. The presentation of the prestigious award by President MaryMcAleese at a gala evening in Dublin Castle officially recognisedAura’s outstanding reputation for removing the barriers which pre-vent people with disability from enjoying sports and leisure facil-ities or from taking up employment in the leisure industry. The close working relationship that exists between the staff atAura Youghal Leisure Centre and its customers and their willing-ness to take on board the suggestions that have been made by cus-tomers were recognised by the judges and this played a significantpart in the leisure centre being named as the Overall Winner of the’O2 Ability Awards 2007’.

Aura Youghal Leisure Centre is one ofseven leisure centres operated through-out the country by Aura Sport andLeisure Management, an associate com-pany of the Holohan Leisure Group. Itsfacilities include a 25 metre pool, 65metre slide, fun feature pool, learnerpool, sauna and steam room, state of artgym and a fully equipped aerobics stu-dio.It opened in Youghal in 2006 and itemploys 24 people locally, many ofwhom gathered at Tides Pub onThursday night to celebrate the awardsceremony of RTE television."We are absolutely thrilled that our com-mitment to providing fun, fitness andhealth for all the family has been recognised with such a presti-gious award. Aura Youghal Leisure Centre is accessible to allmembers of the family, both young and old, including people withdisability. This approach to our business was the key to our suc-cess on this occasion and it has continued to ensure that we com-plement the six O2 Ability Awards for customer service and envi-ronmental accessibility as well as the other national awards thatwe have won for our standards of hygiene," said Marion Hayden,Operations Manager at the centre."The ’Pay-As-You-Go’ option that we offer customers has ensuredthat Aura Youghal Leisure Centre is accessible to everyone, espe-cially families, and we have developed our service to take accountof the demand that this cost effective option continues to generatefrom those interested in getting fit, losing weight, toning up orsimply relaxing and unwinding," Marion added.

Aura Youghal Leisure Centre has also been instrumental in gettinglocal children involved in physical activity at an early age. ItsTeen Gyms, kids swimming lessons and summer camps have beenhugely successful and are just as well subscribed as their gymworkout, slimmers and personal training programmes.Commenting on Aura Youghal Leisure Centre’s success the judgessaid that the company was "outstanding not just for its ability tomatch the standards set but to articulate even larger ambitions"."Its approach is organic and embedded and fully integrated into itsbusiness strategy, its customer relations, its recruitment policiesand its corporate ethic. Its training focuses on skills not justawareness," said the judges."Our customers are just as much a part of our success as the ini-tiatives that we have introduced. One such customer is local nine-teen year old Amanda Crotty. Amanda, who is partially sighted, made a number of suggestions on how the centre could be moreuser friendly for customers who are partially sighted and heradvice has resulted in the installation of lower level lockers withraised numbers at the centres that we operate throughout the coun-try. Small changes such as these have made a great difference tothe service that we provide for customers with partial sight,"Marion explained. The extra mile that the staff at Aura Youghal Leisure Centre areprepared to go in the area of customer service was also applaudedby the judges. Receptionist Ann Meaghan typifies such commit-ment. Ann ’buddies’ with local women who are disabled to ensurethat they enjoy regular aquafit classes and her work is a shiningexample of how Aura Youghal Leisure Centre is helping to changelives.Other initiatives adopted by Aura Sport and Leisure Managementwhich impressed the judges included the provision of familychanging rooms, lower level lockers with raised numbers for cus-tomers with partial sight, the provision of evacuation chairs andcourtesy wheelchairs, the provision of an accessible website andpromotional literature and the formation of a Special NeedsCommittees at Aura Youghal Leisure Centre. As an associate company of the Holohan Leisure Group, AuraYoughal Leisure Centre has benefited immensely from the holis-tic service that the Group provides to clients including planning, design and management of state of the art leisure centres. TheGroup also possesses extensive technical knowledge of materialsand products which allow it to design for safety, durability andaccessibility. The company’s success is also owing to its close working relation-ship with Youghal Town Council who invested in ensuring thatAura Youghal Leisure Centre removed barriers for people withdisability.

AGMThe club held it’s annual agm in the league of the cross onSaturday night last. On what was a difficult year on the field atadult level and a successful year on the field at schoolboy/girllevel there was a lot to be discussed. What was good to see wasthe input of some of the adult players that attended. Firstly clubChairman; Billy Cotter addressed the meeting giving a rundownon the clubs activities both on and off the field during the year. Hethen handed over to Sally O Sullivan schoolboy/girl secretary whogave the meeting a rundown on all the teams achievements duringthe season, that actually only finished on the same day.Liam Ryan the clubs treasurer then went through the clubsfinances for the year. Finally, before discussions under any otherbusiness Anthony Horgan club secretary read out his report on theadult section as well as the club as a whole. All those who gavereports on the night must be congratulated on their very thoroughand well presented reports. Then there was numerous discussionsraised by different people on the floor regarding possible improve-ments that could be made both on and off the field. With too manyto mention, one of the main points that came across, was the pointregarding help that was needed especially at kid’s level.Over the next number of weeks the club will be actively seekingto recruit people/parents to help out just 1 hour a week with thecoaching of kids in the age group of 7/10 years. At present thereare 70/80 kids in this age group which will be reduced drasticallyif help isn’t forthcoming. The committee would like to thank allthose who attended the meeting and gave valuable input into aconstructive meeting.Senior Team Management Announcement. The club are delighted to announce the appointment of a newmanagement team for the senior team for the coming season. Thenew manager Michael Durkin will be joined by Liam Ryan andDavy O’Brien. Michael, who is finishing his UEFA B Licence thisyear, is the most qualified coach within the club and throughoutthe city and county for that matter. Liam who has worked withMichael for the last couple of years will be joined by Davy inhelping Michael in developing a team and attitude to get back thewinning mentality. The club believe this will be a very successfulset up and will push the senior side forward in its quest for suc-cess. Best of luck to the lads.Under 12 Play-Off. The under 12’s unfortunately lost their play-off against Kanturk last week by 4-1. All the goals were scored inthe first half with the lads just not performing against a team thatthey had played twice already during the year, winning once andlosing once in what were always tight games. The lads who fin-ished second will be promoted and got their runners- up medals onthe day. Well done to all concerned.Under 13’s. The under 13’s lost their last game of the season awayto Crosshaven on Saturday last by three goals to one. Crosshavenwho have two games left this week, need to win the two of themto overtake Youghal to win the league. Hopefully one of the teamscan do Youghal a favour by getting a result off them althoughYoughal aren’t really expecting this to happen. At worst Youghalwill finish second and will be promoted, so well done to allinvolved and fingers crossed.Teams. The club are entering teams at schoolboy/girl level thisseason ranging in age from 11 to 16 years of age and are lookingfor managers for a couple of those teams. Anyone who would beinterested in either managing or helping out in any of the teamsshould please contact any committee member over the comingweeks to let their interest be known. The club will be looking toenter a junior team as well this year. It is an area that we have hadtrouble with over the last couple of years but is something that weare trying hard to put right. We are preferably looking for a teamof 2/3 people to put their names forward to manage the team. Ifthe right management team can be found the club will do all in it’spower to help make this section a success, as it is a very valuablepart of the club to back up the senior team.

Under 17. The club would like to congratulate Patrick Durkin onhis recent call up for trials for the Irish under 17 team. Patricktravelled to Dublin on Saturday last for the trials, and will knowmore about how he got on in the coming weeks. Best of luck tohim.Cork under 13 Team. Well done to Ross McCarthy, who playedin the Cork Kennedy Cup team that eventually lost to the Dublindistrict league in the competition final 2-0. Ross played his part inmost of the games including the final and did very well indeed.National Irish Bank Summer Soccer Schools. The club will be hosting the National Irish Bank Summer SoccerSchool again this summer. The camp which is always a big hitwith all the kids that participate is open to girls and boys from theages of 7-15. The dates this summer are 2nd - 6th July. The costof the camp is 90. You can register online at www.fai.ie or tele-phone 1890 653 653. If you register by June 1st you have theoption of personalising your kit. Each participant receives the fol-lowing:Special edition FAI Umbro Playing Kit; Special edition FAIUmbro FootballShoulder Bag; Water Bottle; Official Certificate of Participation;Option to personalise and number your kit.Attention ParentsThe club are at the moment having difficulty in attracting peoplein helping out with the younger kids added between 7-10. It is atbursting point at the moment and already the people involved inthe coaching have had to cut the number of kids they can coach. This has led to a lot of disappointment with kids that have beentold that they can no longer come to training as well as there par-ents.But the simple fact is that two people cannot train fifty or sixtykids. We need people to get involved. If someone wants to getinvolved please let someone within the club know. Basic coach-ing is only needed for this age group and will be given to anyonewho wants to help. If no one comes forward them there will be alot of disappointment kids.Dog Foul - Dog BanI am sorry to say that the club have to introduce a total ban ondogs being let free or walked by there owners in the clubs groundsat Ardrath Park. This is because of a very serious health and safe-ty issue that has being getting progressively worse over the lastyear. The amount of dog foul that is on the clubs pitches and train-ing facilities is totally unacceptable. A lot of dog owners arebringing there dogs into the grounds and letting them free anddon’t seem to care about the fouling.Dog foul is a very serious hazard to players who, if they get it inthere eyes can be blinded in certain circumstances. Also this goesfor our FAS guys who when cutting the grass. Another aspect isthat it just isn’t nice for an eleven year old to fall on the groundwhile playing a game and, get destroyed in dog foul which hashappened. Also a referee can call off a game if he deems the pitchto be a health hazard to the players because of foul. Signs are inthe process of being erected notifying people of the ban. Pleaserespect them as it will be strictly enforced.Advertising SignsThe club are in the process of writing to businesses that don’t havean advertising sign in the club grounds. People are being asked tosee if they would be interested in erecting a sign to advertise therebusiness. The cost will be 150 a year rental charge which is only3 a week. The first 150 would cover the cost of the sign anderecting it. This would allow up to three main colours on the signand would be a standard 8 ft by 2 ft. Every year there after wouldbe rental charge. Anyone who has an interest can contact DamienO’Brien on 086-1988526.All-Weather Pitch The clubs all-weather pitch is available for hire at 25 per hour forfive a side pitch or 50 for a full pitch. The man to contact is Chrison 086-3461540.

YOUGHAL TOURIST TRAILThis tour will take about one hour. It starts at the Heritage Centre in theold market house which was built on reclaimed land on the site of themedieval harbour. The Heritage Centre will introduce you to the story ofYoughal and this trail will take You to see important landmarks in thatstory.

(1) Water GateThis Water Gate was built in the 13th century to provide access throughthe town walls to the docks. It is still known as Cromwell’s Arch, as thisis the place from which Oliver Cromwell left Ireland in 1650.(2) Clock GateThis is the third gate on this site in the town walls and was completed in1777. The tower was used as the town gaol until the mid-19th century.Prisoners were executed by hanging from the windows.(3) Main Street and ShopsThe fronts of the buildings on the Main Street are stepped to follow thecurve ofthe original shoreline. Many fine examples of 19th centuryshopfronts survive today.(4) St. John’s PrioryThe Priory was founded in 1350. Small portions still survive, includingthe door arch and small window on the street front.5) The Red HouseThe Red House was built in the early 18th century for the Uniacke fami-ly. It is reputed to be the only example of the Dutch or Queen Anne styletown house continuing in use as a private dwelling in Ireland.(6) Tynte’s CastleThis 15th century Norman tower was used by a local merchant family asa house and as a store for valuable goods. It is unusual to have such a for-tified dwelling built inside the town walls. Sir Robert Tynte owned thetower in the early 17th century - he married the widow of the poetEdmund Spenser.

(7) Alms HousesThese houses were built in 1610 by Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork, forsix old soldiers. The soldiers received a pension of £5 per annum. Someof the houses were altered in the mid-19th century.(8) Shalom HouseThe Protestant Asylum was built in 1838 by the Protestant Relief Societyto provide rooms for the homeless. It was renovated in 1992 to providesheltered housing and was renamed Shalom House(9) Myrtle GroveThis attractive house was the home of Sir Walter Raleigh when he wasresident in Youghal. It was purchased by Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork,in 1602. It is a fine example of a late medieval dwelling. (Restricted open-ing times, please contact the Tourist Information Office).(10) St. Mary’s Collegiate ChurchThe church was built in 1220 and extended in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is one of the few parish churches of the period still in use in Ireland. Ithas a fascinating history which is fully illustrated in the church.(11) Town WallsThe first record of the town walls is a charter of 1275, granted by KingEdward I, for their repair and extension. The walls surrounded the/townon the shoreline as well as inland. Most of the inland portion still survivestoday. A good vantage point is in the grounds of St. Mary’s CollegiateChurch.(12) The CollegeThe College was founded in 1464 by Thomas Fitzgerald, 7th Earl ofDesmond. It was referred to as the University of the City of Youghal in aLetter from Pope Innocent VIII in 1492. It ceased to function in the late16th century and very little of the original building remains today.

Completion of the Town TrailOur Trail finishes at the College gates. You can explore the small lanesand backstreets of Youghal or return to the Heritage Centre by the route you havecome.

YOUGHAL’S INTERNATIONALVOLLEYBALL TEAM WINFIRST EVER FIXTURE.

By Christy Parker Youghal’s International Volleyball team won is first ever gamewhen it defeated Waterford’s Presentation Colleges by here sets tofour recently. The friendly, mixed match was a closely contestedcontest throughout and took place at city side’s venue. Spokesman Brendan Kavanagh described the trip as "invaluable, not just on a sporting level but also in terms of making new friendsand in exchanging ideas with fellow enthusiasts". The teamenjoyed a very warm welcome and the three-hour visit includedpost-match tea and snacks. The Waterford side were led by formerAll-Ireland medallist Pat Larkin but, like Youghal, are a fledglingside. They will visit the seasiders for a return friendly in the com-ing months. Dubliner Bernard and Czech Republic immigrant Petra Kopalovawere the chief instigators in forming Youghal team, after Petrabegan inviting locals and immigrants to participant in the park andbeach last summer. Dozens of individuals from many countriesanswered the call over the past year but most left according toaltering circumstances. "Now", says Bernard, "a solid core of twelve or so has emerged, including two Youghal players and a Killeagh girl", whose team-mates include Petra, Bernard, three Poles and a Serb. "Our playhas improved immensely since we have become a regular groupand this was very much reflected in Waterford", says Bernard. New members are always welcome and age, experience and fit-ness level carries no prerequisite. The Youghal team has receivedassistance from both community advisory group Cumman naDaoine and Youghal GAA club, whose premises and facilities theyrent on Saturday nights through the winter. Through summer, theypractice outdoors. The match was valuable for both sides in that they each intendjoining a competitive league next September. Youghal are current-ly endeavouring to get sponsorship, with the singular disappoint-ment of the recent match being that they do not yet have team out-fits. Still, its heartening to know that at leas tone Cork team thattrains in a GAA pavilion managed to beat a Waterford side thissummer! Inquiries: 086-8640285

GLOBAL VIEW AS YOUGHALCHILDREN CHOOSE THEIR

FAVOURITE PLACES.By Christy Parker

Youghal Visual Arts Festival Committee deployed art to extractwonderful insight from the landscape of modern childhood whenit asked the region’s youngest generations to express their feelingson ’My Favourite Place’ recently. The intriguing responses frompupils at four primary schools reflect modern influences as theEiffel Tower, Hollywood, Wembley Stadium, Lismore Towers anda cruise liner vying with bedrooms, mum’s car, Youghal’s mainstreet, cows, bonfire night and cutting silage for the prime spot inaffections. The project was an art competition run by the festival committee.Over 400 children from Junior Infants to 6th year at GaelscoilChorain, South Abbey NS, Bun Scoil Mhuire and Knockanore NSwere given three weeks to answer one the most traditional ques-tions of any school bus journey. Local, Cork-based artist Marcella Riordan judged the entriesaccording to class year (as against age), having poured over a mix-ture of media on the floor of a room provided by the WaltherRaleigh hotel. "The children were allowed use whatever materialthey wanted", says Youghal Visual Arts secretary Karen Gallogley."The really went for it and we got back a huge variety, from pen-cils and crayons to paints and models made from paper and glue! One entry involved rolls of silver paper shaped like the EiffelTower". The young minds displayed enough variation to give a college ofpsychologists a year’s insomnia. The list included mother’s car, asubmarine (presumably not mother’s), bedrooms, the beach,Youghal’s main street, Spain. a rocket, video shop, cinema,Hollywood, Capel Island, cows, a forest, railway station andBallinatray House. There were several reassuring images of one’sown front door, while picture poignancy emerged in depictions oftowns and streets in Poland and Estonia from immigrant children.Nobody submitted an art gallery! Some parents’ reactions wererevealing too. "I didn’t know she had done any painting", saidsome. "I haven’t seen it yet", said another more.Initial plans to award each category 1st, 2nd and 3rd place recog-nition was soon extended to additional ’Merit’ awards as animpressed Marcella found it difficult to deprive several entries ofofficial recognition. There were 39 statuettes given out to theselected best, with their entries to be displayed at Youghal’s newlibrary during the Visual Arts Festival from July 14th to 22nd. "Itsan ideal venue and will encourage the children’s interests in booksat the same time" says Karen. It might even become their favouriteplace. See: www.youghalvisualartsfestival.net

ALL RIGHT ON THE KNIGHT ASBUN SCOIL MHUIRE CROWNED

CHESS CHAMPS.By Christy Parker

The young brains of Bun Scoil Mhuire did their town proud thisyear when they performed excellently in their chess competitions. The school runs four teams in the Cork County Z League and2006/7 saw the Under 10’s and the Girls Only teams crownedCounty champions in their respective sections. The two other sections are the Novice League and the ChampionsLeague. The Novice League narrowly missed out on honours butthe Champions League team finished county runners-up in theirsection. The Under-10’s finish at county level but the high placings of theGirls Only and Champions League qualified them for theProvincial Finals, a major tournament held in Limerick. Over 90children from schools throughout Ireland competed and bothYoughal sides finished a highly creditable fifth. The Irish Chess Union, particularly through its secretary JohnAlfred, manages school chess tournaments throughout Ireland.Teacher Michael Sheehan introduced Bun Scoil Mhuire to the ZLeague and his colleagues Stella Terry and Melanie De La Cour

currently carry the mantle. "The children absolutely love it and inwinter especially, we’d have up to 90 children playing duringlunchtime", says Stella. "They start at six years old and learnquickly from watching each other." With the obvious exception of the Girls Only section, most teamsare mixed, though "its mostly boys that play", Stella explains."However when girls do play, they tend to be very good at it", sheadds, indicating that even at such an early age, women will insiston being one move ahead! "Its something that will stay with themforever, long past their days of football or athletics", concludesStella.
