In the second reading today Paul speaks of a “thorn in the flesh” that has been given to him, some malady or mental anguish that seems to distress him greatly. He further testifies that even after praying to God three times for it to be removed from him the answer that God gave him was

“My grace is sufficient for you.” There has been much speculation about what this “thorn” really was, some think that it was a physical ailment or handicap, others think that it was temptations of some sort

and then there were those that think that it was some person who harassed Paul and tried to cause trouble in the Church at Corinth. Whatever the issue that was causing Paul to be troubled it is interesting that God would not relieve him of it even though he prayed, as Christ did in the garden, three times to be

delivered of it. The answer that Paul received that the grace that God gives to him should be enough to get him through should give us hope as well. The hope that we gain from the situation that we see Paul in comes directly from the Sacraments, the wellspring from which the graces of the Church flow so abundantly. In any situation that we may find ourselves, whatever “thorn in the flesh” that we encounter can be endured

with the graces that we receive from the Eucharist, Reconciliation and prayer. God always provides His faithful with the means and the faculties to grow in His love even in our worst of times.

So let us take the example of Paul and carry out our God given mission to share our faith, through action and word, to all of our brothers and sisters, even, and especially, when we are under duress.

Amen.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

- Msgr. Michael D. McGraw

JUNE 28 • ST. JOAN OF ARC • 3

Soon we will be celebrating our Independence Day National Holiday. Hopefully, it will be a weekend for some relaxation and family activities. It is also a perfect time to remind our selves of the great blessing that it is to be an American and to enjoy the rights and privileges that come with citizenship. We have so many freedoms to be thankful for including freedom of religion, speech and safety in our lives. These freedoms we regularly refer to as the “Rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”. Along with these freedoms come attendant responsibilities that we need to live out and practice each day. Independence from oppression and the enjoyment of true freedom of life need our vigilance and practical involvement. Apathy can be a great enemy of our freedoms. Active participation in the democratic process as informed citizens is the best way that we can honor our national identity and keep it strong.

Please visit the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website to read about the different themes that we will be reflecting upon during the National Fortnight for Freedom prayer project, June 21 thru July 4th. (See topics to the right). Copies of meditation and educational materials on each daily theme will be available in the Chapel. Each night during this prayer project there will be a public recitation of the Patriotic Rosary at 7:00 p.m. in our Chapel. Friday and Saturday July 3rd and 4th, the Rosary will be recited in our Marian Garden after the morning Mass. Special thanks to the Eucharistic Adoration Ministry, the Knights of Columbus and the Columbiettes for their leadership in this prayerful opportunity. Prayer, education, and active involvement in the political process will help to preserve and enhance the Freedoms we so gratefully cherish.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL OUTREACH MINISTRIES

I am departing a bit from the usual ministries article with a response to an atheist who does not believe that there can be a “truth” that is accepted by all, that everything is relative to each and every person and if we happen to agree on some things that is good but there is nothing outside of ourselves that orders anything.

To this I answer balderdash. We all know that this way of looking at creation is false. We understand that a created, ordered universe with natural laws, a true sense of right and wrong and a Creator to make it all happen, truly exists. We can also test a simple thing as mathematics as being true.

I learned in school that a “truth” must have 3 aspects to it in order for it to be truly a “truth.” Those aspects are universality, eternality, and necessity.

A truth must be universal, it must exist anywhere and everywhere. Take the sum of 1+1=2 for this to be true it must be true here, on the moon in any galaxy that exists and so forth. A truth must be eternal, always was and always will be, 1+1=2 must be true always, yesterday, tomorrow, even ten billion years from now.

So far so good. A truth must also be absolutely necessary, 1+1 has to equal 2, it can never be anything but 2. Let us ignore the numbers for a second and do a thought experiment, if we have one pencil on a desk and we place another pencil beside it we will and must always and everywhere we may be, have this many pencils . Now don’t say eleven those are not ones there, they are pencils. So we see that a truth can exist and it is universal, eternal and necessary. Now comes the big question. How can a person like you and me who are not universal, not eternal and even though we might believe so, we are not necessary, how can mere creatures like us understand a truth as we do? The answer is and must be because we are creatures that must have been created by a being that must have these characteristics and we can only know these truths by participating in this Creators creation. We like to call Him God. So, Mr. Atheist, can I introduce you to our RCIA Program Director?

WHAT IS TRUTH?

AIM RETREAT WEEKEND“A resounding success and a blessing to many” is how our recent AIM retreat for individuals with physical disabilities is being described. The retreat, an outreach ministry of St. Joan of Arc, was held this past June 5-7 weekend, with Fr. Gavin Badway, Pastor of Ascension Catholic Church, providing the talks and spiritual direction to 46 participants. The retreat theme, “From Suffering to Joy and Glory,” emphasized how we can make suffering something of significant value to us and highlighted how to live a joyful life, despite our limitations or challenges, and be ready to welcome glory. Upon returning home from the retreat, one of our parishioners found out that her elderly mother had stage IV

cancer and she says, “I am so grateful that I had just come back from AIM when I found out, because I now know that suffering serves an important purpose. She’s looking forward to the joy and glory!”

As Monsignor McGraw said during one of his homilies recently, participating in an AIM Retreat Weekend is a transformative experience. Parishioners interested in supporting or participating in future retreats call Margarita Castellon at 954-821-6077 or e-mail at [email protected].

VOCATION CHALICE & FAMILY PRAYERS FOR VOCATIONS

Several years ago the Diocese of Palm Beach began the Vocation Chalice Program. Families were encouraged, one Sunday at a time, to take a chalice home after Mass for a week of prayer for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

The Serra Club started this ministry to foster and promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life and to further family spirituality and devotional practices. The worldwide Serra movement has over 23,000 members in over 700 clubs in 36 nations. It is named for Blessed Junipero Serra, a Franciscan priest who was a California missionary in the late 1700s.

HOW THE VOCATION CHALICE PROGRAM WORKSOne family, each week, takes a chalice home after the end of the Mass and family members pray every night with the chalice in their midst for more priests and religious vocations. They return the chalice by the following Saturday for it to be given to the next family who is selected for that weekend.

We, at St. Joan of Arc, have not only continued this practice with the English speaking Parishioners, but have also included it with the Spanish-speaking parishioners at the 6:30pm Mass on Saturdays.

Several members of the St. Joan of Arc Columbiettes have chosen to be Chalice Coordinators and will be approaching families after the weekend Masses and/or after the daily masses during the week. Families will have the option to choose the Mass of their choice to receive the chalice.

As you know Pope Francis will come to visit USA for the World Meeting of Families taking place in Philadelphia September 22-27, 2015. While not many families will be able to attend this event, we can all participate in the preparation with prayer and sharing in the catechesis made especially for this world meeting. In the next weeks, we invite the parents of the children of Religious Education and of the entire parish as well to read in this spot a summary of each of the topics that will be discussed. We open with an excerpt of Archbishop Chaput in his welcome letter to families attending the event.

Saint John Paul II, hailed as the Pope of the Family, created the World Meeting of Families in 1994 in Rome to explore the critical role the family plays in society and to give families opportunities to talk about the challenges and blessings that all families have.

Our theme, “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive” was inspired by the early Church Family, St. Irenaeus, who wrote “the Glory of God is man fully alive.” The glory of men and women is their capacity to love as God loves – and no better means exists to teach the meaning of love than the family. His Holiness, Pope Francis also inspired the theme. He embodies the message of mercy, joy and love at the heart of the Gospel.

STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property.

STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you’d like to make.1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed.2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.)A bequest can be made in a number of ways:• A specific dollar amount.• Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property.• Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan.• A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met.• An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc.

STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you’ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney.

An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits.

As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes.

STEP 4 Contact us.We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.)

Please contact Wendy Horton in the Development Office at (561) 952-2838 or [email protected].
