(This Tuesday is the Feast of Sts Peter & Paul, the traditional date on which priests were ordained in the Brisbane Archdiocese. This year 3 young men, Francis Fernandes, Jack Ho and William Aupito Iuliano, will follow that tradition and be ordained to the presbyterate by Archbishop Mark Coleridge in St Stephen’s Cathedral. Luke Bully from the Passionist Community will also be ordained in the same ceremony. I don’t know whether it is with tongue planted firmly in cheek or with a genuine awareness of the variety of difference in the Church that the Church makes these two early preachers share a Feast Day. One thing is for sure: they were hardly the best of buddies while they were alive. Paul actually records one of their disagreements: “When Cephas (Peter) came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face. He stood self-condemned because, until certain people came from James, he used to eat with Gentiles. But, as soon as they arrived, he drew back and kept separate from them for fear of the Circumcision Faction. And the other Jews joined him in this hypocrisy, even Barnabas. But, when I saw that they were not acting consistently with the truth of the Gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, ‘If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?’” (Galatians 2/11-14). Now that’s one little confrontation I would have loved to be a fly on the wall at! After all, the two were as different as chalk and cheese. Peter was a working man- not a poor one, mind you! You could make a tidy little profit out of fishing around the Sea of Galilee, and Peter had his own boat(s) and seems to have been partners in a company (Luke 5/1-11). There is no suggestion, however, that he was particularly educated or overly interested in the religious side of things prior to Jesus coming along. Paul also had a trade, a tent maker (A cts 18/2-4), and must have been comfortably enough off to be able to run around the countryside to persecute Christians. He tells us that he was “advanced in Judaism beyond many among my people of the same age, for I was far more zealous for the traditions of my ancestors” (Galatians 1/14). So he was pretty much into the religion thing from the start. If both were plucked unexpectedly from their normal lifestyles to follow Christ, it was in very different circumstances. Peter was to link up with Jesus early on in his ministry and possibly had some three years following and listening to his vision, culminating in the traumatic events leading up to and following his death. Paul never knew Jesus and any knowledge he had of Jesus or his followers presumably came from a hostile environment. You might think that it must have taken a fair bit of re- education to prepare him for his mission, but Paul himself tells us that nobody gave him any instruction (so much for the RCIA!) but that he immediately started preaching about Christ in Arabia (Galatians 1/16f). So this man who had never even met Jesus becomes one of his most prolific and innovative preachers. Not only that but, while Paul was the confirmed bachelor (and thought everybody else should be too (1 Corinthians 7/1- 9)!), Peter had a wife whom he did not even forsake for the sake of the Gospel, taking her with him on his preaching journeys (1 Corinthians 9/5). Both have their battles in life. Peter, together with the rest of the disciples, has to come to terms with deserting Jesus in his hour of need (John 21/15-19), while Paul never forgot that he was a persecutor of the Movement (Galatians 1/13) and, if Peter had a tendency to vacillate, Paul seems to have had a tendency to over-confidence (2 Corinthians 12/7). But the main difference seems to have been in their attitude to which way the mission would go. Despite, according to the Acts of the Apostles, having a conversion experience over the Cornelius affair (A cts 10/48), Peter always seems to have been much more comfortable with his own, whereas Paul, having made the decision, commits himself totally to the new vision: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3/28). Maybe the better you know the old, the easier it is to accept the new! 13th Sunday Ordinary 27th June 2021

Year B

Peter and Paul - Saints!

(This Tuesday is the Feast of Sts Peter & Paul, the traditional date on which priests were ordained in the Brisbane Archdiocese. This year 3 young men, Francis Fernandes, Jack Ho and William Aupito Iuliano,

will follow that tradition and be ordained to the presbyterate by Archbishop Mark Coleridge in St Stephen’s Cathedral. Luke Bully from the Passionist Community will also be ordained in the same

ceremony.

But, when I saw that they were not acting consistently with the truth of the Gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, ‘If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the

Gentiles to live like Jews?’” (Galatians 2/11-14).

Paul also had a trade, a tent maker (Acts 18/2-4), and must have been comfortably enough off to be able to run around the countryside to persecute Christians.

You might think that it must have taken a fair bit of re-

education to prepare him for his mission, but Paul himself tells us that nobody gave him any instruction (so much for the RCIA!) but that he immediately started preaching about Christ in Arabia (Galatians 1/16f). So this man who had never even met Jesus becomes one of his most prolific and innovative preachers.

Not only that but, while Paul was the confirmed bachelor (and thought everybody else should be too (1 Corinthians 7/1-

9)!), Peter had a wife whom he did not even forsake for the sake of the Gospel, taking her with him on his preaching journeys (1 Corinthians 9/5).

Despite, according to the Acts of the Apostles, having a conversion experience over the Cornelius affair (Acts 10/48), Peter always seems to have been much more comfortable with his own, whereas Paul, having made the decision, commits himself totally to the new vision: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3/28). Maybe the better you know the old, the easier it is to accept the new!

We respectfully acknowledge the Turrbal people, as the traditional owners and caretakers of the land which is the Toowong Catholic Parish. We acknowledge the Elders, past and present. May we, too, be good stewards of this land.

PARISH INFORMATION

Task Force Update.

Covid requirements for churches have been eased!

Capacity. The new capacity for churches is 3 people per 4 square metres so we can now have up to 270 in St Ignatius and 210 at Auchenflower. The same measure applies to any event within the church.

After Mass hospitality. People are now able to serve themselves food and drink so we will be recommencing hospitality at each Mass. Please watch for notices about a cuppa after the Mass you attend.

Qld Government Covid check in app. Contact tracing remains an important element of keeping everyone safe. Where possible, you are encouraged to download the app to your phone as many venues across Queensland will be introducing mandatory check-in including supermarkets. If you are unsure how to download the app, be encouraged to ask for help – it is quite simple and takes only a couple of minutes. It will save you a lot of time when you go about your daily business.

Regardless of these changes, you are reminded to stay home if you are unwell, get fully vaccinated as soon as possible, socially distance and be conscious of hygienic practices wherever you are.

ANNUAL PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION ~ 3—4 JULY

Each year parishes in the Archdiocese of Brisbane take up the Peter's Pence collection. The collection is to be taken at the Masses the weekend after the Feast of Sts Peter and Paul.

Therefore, this year’s collection will be taken up next weekend 3—4 July 2021.

This collection gives Catholics in Australia an opportunity to join in communion with the Catholic faith throughout the world in support of the charitable works of the Holy See.

Marked envelopes will be available on rotary stands (both churches) this weekend. Please place your contribution into one and leave in the collection basket at church doors.
