THE CHURCH GATHERS

Silent Prayer and time for Centering

Prelude

*Call to Worship:

We wait for the Lord, our souls wait for the Lord,

and find hope in God’s word.

Our souls wait for the Lord

more than those who watch for the morning.

More than those who watch for the morning.

Let us seek hope in our God,

whose power is enduring love,

whose redemption brings healing and grace.

We wait for the Lord,

and find our hope in God’s presence

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Silence for Personal Confession

God of Grace, we come to you in search of healing.

We come to you in search of peace.

We come, often bearing only a tiny seed of hope within,

praying that it is enough.

Our cries come in the deepest part of the night,

and we do not always ask for help.

Our hearts bleed just as surely as our bodies,

and we do not always recognize the hidden pain of others.

Or even our own.

Sometimes we struggle to find our faith at all,

and forget that doubt, too, is a part of belief.

Give us courage enough

to reach out for the hem of your cloak.

Give us strength enough

to speak the truth of our own struggles,

and to see and hear and know

the struggles of others.

Forgive us when we think you only want us if we’re perfect.

Fill us with your endless supply of love,

so that we might try again. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Christ gave us his weakness,

that we might become strong.

He gave us the wealth of his wisdom,

that we might know what is true.

He offered his own vulnerability,

making himself defenseless,

that we might actually learn love.

It is the faith Christ has given us that has made us well;

the power of God’s love that heals and redeems.

There is forgiveness in God,

and a hope that makes us whole.

Having received Christ’s peace,

we share signs of it now with one another.

For God’s healing is meant to move both within us and between us.

Passing the Peace of Christ

OFFERTORY MUSIC Let Nothing Ever Grieve Thee Johannes Brahms

Let nothing ever grieve thee, distress thee, nor fret thee;

heed God's good will, my soul, be still, compose thee.

Why brood all day in sorrow?

tomorrow will bring thee God's help benign and grace sublime in mercy.

Be true in all endeavor, and ever do bravely;

what God decrees brings joy and peace, He'll stay thee. Amen.

An English-language version of Brahms' famous motet Lass dich nur nichts nicht dauren, Op.30. SATB and organ. Text

by Paul Fleming, translated by Walter Buszin. © 2010, St. James Music Press Box 249 Tryon NC 28782. Permission to

DOXOLOGY

OFFERTORY PRAYER

God of boundless generosity,

as we offer our gifts and our lives to you,

help us to hear and heed your apostle Paul.

We long to grow as disciples,

so that we grow in generosity.

The abundance we’ve been given has a purpose in your plan,

that we might know the joy of sharing that abundance with those in need.

We long for that vision of your kin-dom,

where loving hearts bring a better balance between abundance and need.

In the name of Christ, our teacher and redeemer, we pray. Amen.
