WHO’S TO BLAME?
Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century. He has been called the “prince of paradox.” He was known for his insightful views on many issues. He wrote authoritatively in several areas of literature, including Christian apologetics.
The London Times newspaper once asked a number of authors to write on the topic: “What’s wrong with the world?” Chesterton’s answer was the shortest of those submitted; he simply wrote.
Dear London Times,
I am.
Sincerely Yours,
G. K. Chesterton
He was not joking. As a Christian writer, his answer was very fundamental. The problem of this world will never be addressed in full until we come to understand in our own minds, hearts, and souls that the problem lies first and foremost in me.
Sin came into God’s beautiful creation through Adam and Eve. We have all inherited a sinful condition from our first parents. Man’s sin in the garden was one of disobedience to God’s command, and even more one of pride, thinking that he could know better than God, and be the determining factor in what was right or wrong for him.
The most important aspect of sin that every person must understand and acknowledge is the universal nature of sin. The Bible is clear on this point. Every person has sinned and stands before God guilty in this regard. Thus, the truth told by G.K. Chesterton.
Everything that is wrong in the world is because of sin. Because of sin human beings have been alienated from God, from one another, from nature, and from themselves. All sin leads to death. The snowball began rolling downhill with the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
But God loves the world, and especially loves His human creation. And the Lord was not going to lose anything that is His. John 3:16 tells “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” And, the Father’s Son, Jesus, declared: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10.
St. Paul teaches us correctly: through one man sin entered the world, and through sin death, but through one man, Jesus, life has been restored. Along with G.K. Chesterton, each of us is part of what is wrong with the world. Jesus, however, has righted the wrong.
Fr. Dave

“A little mercy makes the world less cold and more just.” Pope Francis, Angelus, March 17, 2013
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Soon our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection. Our participation supports the charitable work of Pope Francis as he reaches out to those who are marginalized and suffering around the globe. By supporting this collec-tion, you join the Holy Father in bringing a little more mercy into the world.
Pope Francis called to us in his 2016 Urbi et Orbi address, “May efforts be made everywhere to promote the culture of encounter, justice and reciprocal respect, which alone can guarantee the spiritual and material welfare of all people.” We are taking up this collection to be part of the Church’s effort to promote a culture of encounter and justice. Your support makes it possible for the Holy Father to carry out his charitable works around the world, to help victims of war, natural disasters, and other difficult situations.
Let us join with our brothers and sisters in faith from around the globe to help Pope Francis reach the marginalized in our world. Please prayerfully consider how you can best support the collection this year. For more information about the collection, please visit www.usccb.org/peters-pence. May God bless you,
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C. Bishop of Peoria
Note: This collection will be next weekend, July 1st & 2nd.

HELLO VOLUNTEERS, HELLO SENIORS
Would you like to make a difference in another person’s life? The Catholic Charities Good Samaritan Program of Champaign & Piatt Counties is working to expand its Caring Companions Program for seniors. The program pro-vides socialization, transportation, and assistance with activities of daily living by matching volunteers with seniors based on mutual interests, needs and compatibility.
Are you over the age of 60 and living independently but would appreciate someone coming to visit, talk, read, play cards or share in another activity? Do you need help with shopping, light errands, or getting to appointments? A Car-ing Companion volunteer may be just what you need.
If you don’t fit either of these descriptions, do you know someone who does? To participate in this program as a senior care receiver, or to volunteer, contact Kim McAvoy at [email protected] or call 217-637-2395.
