Kids, Dress Up, Bikes, Money and Canada Day will all be happening on Wednesday July 1st! Between 70 and 120 kids with their moms and dads will gather at Lake Trail School with their bikes. The theme this year is “Salute to the Pioneers”.

To enter the Bike Decorated Con-test, kids should take their decorated bike to Lake Trail School at 9:30am Wednesday July 1st.

Recognition of the kids decorating skills, rather than their parent’s skills are rewarded, the judges this year will be Chantelle Bur-gess and Steven Zwick. Cash prizes in all age groups 4 years to 12 years of age: groups 4-5 years, 6-7 years, 8-9 years, 10-11 years, 12 and older will be in the run-ning for rst prizes of $20, second priz-es of $15 and third prizes of $10 (3yrs. and under $15,$10,and $5) Also prize for best family group and best club ef-fort of $25. Every entry will get a gift. The best part of the Contest is all get to ride down behind the EAGLE radio car leading off the Grande Parade. Parents should pick their kids up at the CRA at 11am. (approx)

The July 1st Committee for the City of Courtenay organizes Canada Day

festivities with the happiness of chil-dren one of its major priorities.

The Bike Decorated Contest, Kids Zone in Lewis Park with free bounc-ers, 7 Story Circus, Hoola Hoopla, facepainting, games, the outdoor swimming pool Free Swim, delicious Birthday Cake donated by Costco, and the exciting Kids Bike Draw, all will be happening Wednesday July 1st. Moms

and Dads can give their kids a great day and it is all free. For all the children in the Valley the Kids Bike Draw is a very exciting hap-pening. All day long in Lewis Park kids have the opportuni-ty to go to the Bike Draw Booth and get a ticket. Their hand will be stamped and

then at 3pm on the Lewis Park Stage over a dozen brand new shiny bikes with helmets are given away.

The bikes are donated by generous service clubs in the Valley and over the years, hundreds of kids have been lucky to have won a bike.

Courtenay is celebrating its 100th birthday and Canada Day this year will be a great celebration.

Canada Day in Courtenay is a fun family event, please plan to come! All info is on the web site comoxvalley-canadaday.ca.

Somewhere in the homes of many long time Valley residents there is a box of old LP records and among those old vinyl relics you can nd a 1974 release of Comox and Friends - probably the rst recorded by a band from the Comox Valley.

Jim Papp and Edwin Grieve, along with Ontario native, Paul Stephens were just out of high school when they signed a recording contract with Hoo-ka Records and moved to Vancouver to spend two years recording at the famous Mushroom Studios.

Their unique vocals and country/folk/rock style caught the attention of A&M records in Los Ange-les and, although the band never had a release in the U.S., they scored a brief top 10 Canadian charted success with “My Country Lady”

Their songs stand the test of time with two of them still getting airplay in Europe and on the internet.

“We spent a lot of time on our songwriting,” says Edwin Grieve, “and with the great vocals of Jim and Paul we could hold our own with any of the bands of that era.”

Comox and Friends will be performing Tuesday night June 30 as part of the Nite Before concert in Simms Park.   You can even trade the old scratchy record in for a re-mastered C.D.
