Ebenezer Canadian Reformed School

The students chose as their graduation theme, Philippians 4:13 “I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (NIV 1984). The second part of that verse shows that the doing is impossible without God.Reading the surrounding verses enables us to properly understand this verse. Verse 12 talks about how the writer, Paul, has experienced great hardship as well as abundance and has learned to be content with either. Verse 13 then becomes a powerful statement of trust in God and his goodness regardless of how life is going

and echoes Habakkuk’s moving expression of faith (Habakkuk 3:17-19). Verse 14 ties the “I” statement of the theme text into community and relationship when Paul expresses that it was good to experience how the faith community helped him in his troubles. So, as grads, find in God your strength to face anything but share in each other’s troubles and joys as your tangible expression of the love that Christianity is.

The word “peace” is central in the verse chosen by this year’s graduating class of Bulkley Valley Christian School. (John 14:27) This is commendable, because peace is something everyone longs for. At the same time peace seems to be very elusive. And in fact, that is exactly what it is for those who are not disciples of Christ. It is the desire of the parents who send their children to BVCS that they graduate with a wish to bring the healing power of Christ to the world. The peace described in the chosen verse does exactly that.

Those who have this peace will enjoy a complete sense of well-being and spiritual rest, allowing them to go out into the world ready to share this peace with others in whatever way they choose. It is my wish for this year’s graduates that having the peace of Christ will help you to fulfill your dreams and desires in a way that not only satisfies your desire, but that also pleases the One who has brought you this far.
