it’s a riteIt’s a rite of passage — an event to
mark the end of one stage in life, and the beginning of a new one. In the case of
high school, a spring convocation marks the end of grade school years — and for many of the graduates, a new job, a new
path in education, or even anopportunity to see more of
the world.
presenting the diplomasOne-by-one, each graduate is introduced (often alphabetically), called to the stage,
and presented with their diploma. In B.C., this diploma is called
the Dogwood.
grand paradeIn general, the school faculty, parents and other dignitaries enter the facility
first. Graduating students then parade in, to either traditional
music or a class song.
cap and gownThe grads are decked out, traditionally,
in a cap and gown. These date back to medieval clergy and
European universities.
turning the tasselWhether done by themselves or by one of the faculty or a guest presenter, the tassels on the graduates’ mortarboards (caps) are
then moved from the right to the left. This signifies student becoming graduate.
presentationsFaculty and guest speakers then
do what they do, followed by speeches from the class
valedictorian(s).
pomp & circumstancePlenty of photos are taken during this
ceremony — which can last up to three hours. Often, there are tidbits about each grad spo-
ken, and their awards, dreams, goals and interests detailed.

Graduating students, on behalf of Kwalikum Secondary I would like to congratulate you on all your accomplishments on the way to being the graduating class of 2013. I hope you look back years from now andremember all the wonderful times you had and all the challenges you were able to meet.
It is such a shock to me that it is already time to see you go. I remember so clearly the grade 9 day in September and watching you run around trying to gure out high school life and then so quickly you have become
grads and are leading the way for the grades behind you. You have lead with such conviction, you have
goals, you have dreams and you have the tools to achieve them.I hope you nd the careers and the happiness you all deserve. When the moment is right take time to re ect on your days at KSS and when you can thank the people that had a positive in uence in your life and helped made KSS just a little more rewarding for you.
Thank you the parents and the whole Qualicum community for all your support you have given to our students and school programs. Without your support our students would not achieve the success and education that they deserve and strive for. It is important for our students to feelsupported and they do by our community. ~ Jesse Witte, Principal
