SERMON NOTES

1

June 24, 2018

The purpose of Wesley United Methodist Church is to proclaim God’s love

by: Providing spiritual nurture to those who have accepted Christ as their

Lord and Savior, and witnessing his love to those who have not yet accept-

ed him; and by providing for the needs of the human community as God

reveals them to us.

We gather to publicly worship the Lord through Praise, Prayer, Word, and Sacra-

ment. Worship is by definition a communal act. We gather in response to the grace

already given to us through Jesus Christ. So at its heart, worship is about thanks-

giving for the relationship established through the crucifixion and resurrection of our

Savior. We bring a sacrifice of praise. We gather not as an audience, but as actors

on a stage, directed by the worship leaders, directing our worship toward our audi-

ence: our faithful, awesome God.

The Chancel Flowers this morning are given to the glory of God and in memory of

Becky Coulson, beloved mother of Briston, daughter, sister, niece, cousin, grand-

daughter of the Snell, Wilkins, Sinde, Stamas and Nichols families.

Welcome: Thank you for joining us in worship today. We hope that you have felt

God’s love in a new way. If you are a first-time visitor, please let one of the ushers

know; we would like for you to have a welcome bag. Following the 8:00 and 9:45

a.m. worship services we invite you to join us in Grace Fellowship Hall for a cup of

coffee or juice, and a cookie or two. We look forward to worshiping with you again

soon.

Hearing assistance devices are available. Please speak with an usher if you are

in need of one.

A Family Restroom can be found in the Music Suite on the same level as the Sanc-

tuary by using the door to the left of the pulpit.

June 24 – July 1, 2017

Let Us Pray….

Sunday: and praise God, Who is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, unchanging,

transcendent, and sovereign. Pray for those worshiping today to hear

truth as Scripture is read and proclaimed. Ask God to bless the Sunday

School Teachers and Students as they learn more about God.

Monday: that our love for God’s Word would increase as we spend time reading and

studying. Pray that God’s light will expose our sins so that we might come

to Him in confession and repentance and receive forgiveness and cleans-

ing.

Tuesday: for the Staff as they meet to prepare for worship. Ask God to encourage

them in their walk of faith. Pray for the Women’s Covenant Discipleship

Group as they meet to review the four areas of the covenant and how they

have been faithful.

Wednesday: and intercede for the sick asking for God’s healing touch upon them, for

Him to comfort the grieving, to provide a safe haven for the abused, to

give renewed hope and perseverance to those dealing with chronic condi-

tions, to renew love and respect for those dealing with marital challenges,

to give wisdom and discernment to parents dealing with rebellious chil-

dren, to set free those caught in an addiction, etc. Pray for our church to

be a place where Christ is lifted up.

Thursday: for our Organist, Praise & Worship Ensemble, and Leader as they prepare

for worship. Pray for our guest musicians as they fill in for the choir during

the summer months. Ask God to bless each one as they share their time

and talent with us.

Friday: for those in authority to be given wisdom and discernment as they work

together to do what is right and good. Pray for Christ’s church to be

strong, to be like a light on a hill, and to be successful at making disciples.

Saturday: for those who live in places where there is a shortage of food and good

drinking water, civil unrest, persecution, etc. Pray that God’s people will

do all they can to alleviate these conditions. Pray for the Mama Tola

School to be successful in teaching their students ways to support their

families and to live for Christ.

Sunday: prepare our hearts and minds to worship God in spirit and in truth. Pray

that as we celebrate the Sacrament of Communion our gratitude for all

that Christ has accomplished for us will overflow.

Pray for our Pastors every day. Ask God to fill them with an unquenchable thirst for

His Word and time alone with Him in prayer 3

Announcements

240th Anniversary Fun Fact: DID YOU KNOW … that in 1830 the Methodist Protestant Church split from the Methodist Episcopal Church over whether laity

had a voice and vote? Then in 1844 tensions over slavery split the denomina-tion into two conferences, the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church South. In 1939 the northern and southern Methodist Episcopal

Church and the Methodist Protestant Church merged to become the Methodist Church.

Attention, Collectors ─ The 240th Anniversary Committee is organizing to cele-brate Wesley Church’s birthday throughout 2018. Have you collected memora-bilia about the church, such as plates, photos, letters, Sunday School pins, doc-

uments, and articles, that you would like to share? If so, please bring the items to the church office or call Connie Strickland (678-0685) to pick up. Donna Josefowski is scanning photos showing church events in the church’s

website (wesleyumc-dover.com). Please contact her to lend your pictures: ([email protected] or 697-6210). If already digital, they can be e-mailed to Donna as well. The photos can then be shared on Wesley's Facebook Page

and saved for our records.

Flower Calendar for 2018 upcoming open dates are: September 9th, and 16th. On Sunday morning take time to stop in the hallway to sign-up for a Sun-

day, or, call the church office.

Audio/Video Outreach Ministry — Greetings and blessings to all. I come to

you with a request for assistance. Wesley’s audio/video outreach ministry is in need of volunteers to help run our video camera each Sunday. Ideally, we would like servants for both the 9:45 a.m. traditional and the 11:15 a.m. contempo-

rary services. We will be happy to help train those willing to serve in this vital ministry. The more volunteers, the lighter the work. If you’re interested or would like information, please contact Alex Vaughan at 302-423-1608.

Altar Call — Sunday, July 1, 2018 — During the 9:45 a.m. Worship Service Invitation to Christian Discipleship. We invite any who want to respond to the love of God and commit their lives to Christ to come forward and pray at the

chancel rail. We also invite those who would like to recommit their lives to Christ, and then any who would like to kneel in prayer. If you would like a pas-

tor to pray with you while you are at the rail, please extend a hand out to let us know.

July 1st, Patriotic Hymns Sing at 9:30 a.m. in Celebration of Independence Day!

July 8th, we will celebrate Communion at all three services.
