MERCY CORNER The Promises of the Sacred Heart
1st Promise: “I will give to My faithful all the graces
necessary in their state of life.”
Sacred Heart of Jesus, give me all the graces I need in my life.
I believe that at Holy Mass the graces you gained for me when
You died on the cross reach my soul, especially in Holy Com-
munion.
Give me Your grace which is the life of my soul. That grace will
make my soul holy and pleasing to God.
Give light to my mind and strength to my will to do good and
avoid evil.
I want to confess my sins and receive You in Holy Communion
often.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I love You!
Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of
Christ
Theme: Jesus continues to offer himself to us and feed us
in the Holy Eucharist.
Breaking Open the Word
Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Gospel
Step One: Listen to the Word
As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike
you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lin-
gers in your memory?
Step Two: Look into Your Life
Question for Children: How can you share what you have
received from Jesus with others this week?
Question for Youth: Each week, when we celebrate the
Holy Eucharist we are asked to “do this in remembrance
of me”. How else do you acknowledge the importance of
Jesus in your life? Through prayer? Through the ways that
you treat others?
Question for Adults: How can you prepare yourself to be
nourished by Jesus in the Eucharist this week?

How to Participate in the Eucharistic Prayer The fundamental insight: A priest is a bridge builder, or pontifex, who bridges the divide sepa-rating man from God so that we can pass over from earth to heaven. Jesus’ priestly Pascal Mys-tery—His suffering, dearth, Resurrection, and As-cension—bridges the gap between fallen earth and eternal heaven: He is the Pontifex Maximus. Even though Christ does not need our assistance in His saving work, He makes us sharers in His priesthood at baptism, empowering us to build the Paschal bridge with Him during the Eucharis-tic Prayer. The principal activity: Recalling that baptism con-forms us to Jesus and His priesthood and gives to each the power to offer sacrifice, following the preparation of your heart dring the offertory pray-ers, remember that you must join these to the sacrifice of Jesus at the priest’s hands, sending them across the chasm to God the Father.

Weekly Reflection June 23, 2019
The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Those charitable appeals that land in our mailboxes seem to have a way
of multiplying. They also seem to arrive so frequently that lead us to a
toss into the trash basket. Their senders could care less about their com-
petitors for our dollars. Yet I find there is a special power in any appeal
that calls for aid to those who hunger. Add to the brochure a picture of
a famished child and you have my attention. I reach for my checkbook.
If you have ever gone on a diet to lose weight, or even fasted authenti-
cally during Lent, you know there is the slight pain in your stomach. It
is so used to more and more often. But in those two situations there is
certainly no real fear, because we know that just behind the refrigerator
door lies the comfort of available food. Not true for those starving peo-
ple on our planet.
Jesus knew all about physical hunger. He fasted for forty days. Being
“like us in all things but sin” as one Mass preface puts it, He experi-
enced the pain of hunger. But He also knew much about our spiritual
hunger for God. For union with our Maker, which whether or not we
acknowledge it, is “hard wired” in our makeup. We may try to stifle this
other form of hunger with all kinds of “stuffing.” You know what I
mean. It’s all those distractions we permit. The tangible toys of materi-
al success. The hobbies that become habits. Or the habits that become
addictions. But we remain hungry long after the initial attraction of
those things is gone.
The goodness of God is everlasting. He has a long record of feeding
us. The Hebrews had manna to survive in their desert wanderings. The
five thousand had their fill of bread and fish. But on the night of the
Last Supper we learned that those were mere foreshadows of what He
would do with the Passover bread and wine. Quite simply, the real
Jesus took real bread and real wine and changed them into Him-
self. This He followed with the command to do this in His memory.
Two months ago, on Holy Thursday, we were too distracted by Our
Lord’s awful agony in the garden; His powerful gesture of foot washing;
His creation of the New Testament priesthood and even the tragic be-
trayal of Judas to give our full attention to the Eucharist. So each year
the Church puts this feast of “Corpus Christi” on the calendar to focus
on the most precious of the seven gifts of the sacraments. It is this jewel
that is, in her way of expressing it officially, “the source and summit” of
the Christian life. The main reason for the Church’s existence. The
principal reason for the priesthood.
It is important for us Catholics, especially in our pluralistic culture and
one that prefers everybody to blend in, that we be very clear in how we
differ from Protestant Christians, who believe that the Eucharist is only
a symbol. That Christ was only speaking metaphorically. We instead
believe that the bread and wine, consecrated at the Mass, through the
words of Christ spoken by the celebrating priest, really and truly be-
come the living Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
Even if this feeding seems to have no immediate effect, our souls have
been fed. Spiritual hunger is satisfied. Through the Eucharist our faith
has the chance to be renewed. Also, our hope becomes reinvigorated
and our charity is re-energized. This means ultimately that none of us
need go spiritually hungry ever again. Humbly we pray “Our Father,
who art in heaven, give us this day our daily Bread.”
June 23, 2019 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Saint of the Week Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin, 1873-1897
St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus – also known as St. Thérèse of Lisieux
and the Little Flower – was born Marie-Françoise-Thérèse Martin in
Alençon, France on January 2, 1873. She was the youngest of five
surviving children, all girls, of Louis and Azélie-Marie Martin.
Thérèse had a happy childhood, surrounded by good influences. She
wrote that her earliest memories were “of smiles and tender caress-
es”. When her mother died in 1877, her father sold his watchmaking
business and moved the family to Lisieux so that the children could be
near an aunt who would help to raise them. Mary, an older sister, ran
the household and Pauline, the eldest, took charge of the family’s reli-
gious training.
When Thérèse was nine, Pauline entered the Carmelite convent at Li-
sieux, something that Thérèse also longed to do. Mary entered the
same convent when Thérèse was nearly fourteen. It was at this time
that Thérèse experienced her first vision of the baby Jesus. During the
next few months, Thérèse made known her wish to enter the Carmelite
convent. While her father agreed, the Carmelites and the bishop felt
that, at fourteen, she was too young. Shortly thereafter, when her father
took Thérèse on a pilgrimage to Rome, she boldly spoke up at a gen-
eral audience with the pope seeking his permission to enter the con-
vent. “You shall enter if it be God’s will,” Pope Leo XIII told her in a
kindly dismissal.
Some time later, the bishop gave her permission to enter. Only fifteen,
Thérèse joined her two sisters in the Carmelite convent in April, 1888.
(A fourth sister, Céline, also entered the convent a few years later after
the death of their father.) In the convent, Thérèse was content with the
life of hard work and prayer. "I prefer the monotony of obscure sacri-
fice to all ecstasies. To pick up a pin for love can convert a soul," echo-
ing her way of life.
Thérèse’s superiors, one of whom was her sister Pauline, recognized
the saintliness of this humble girl and directed her to write her autobi-
ography. This book, L’histoire d’une âme (The Story of a Soul), was
instantly successful and is still read and loved throughout the world.
During Holy Week in the year 1896, Thérèse took ill. Over the next
eighteen months, her disease worsened and she died on September 30,
1897 at the age if twenty-four. Shortly before that, she wrote, "I want
to spend my heaven doing good on earth." She also said that “After my
death I will let fall a shower of roses,” a prophecy that has become a
sign of the saint’s intercession even to our own time. Due to her popu-
larity and the miracles which were attributed to her soon after her
death, the Holy See dispensed with the period of fifty years which
ordinarily elapsed in those days before the beatification process could
begin. Pope Pius XI beatified her in 1923 and declared her a saint in
1925.
St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus is the patroness of all foreign missions
and of all works for Russia. She is also a patroness of aviators. We
honor St. Thérèse with a Memorial on October 1.
Thérèse's message today: “To pick up a pin for love can conver t a
soul.” Thérèse understood that anything we do for another in God’s
name is done for love. Even in doing the humblest and most mundane
of chores, Thérèse was serving God in the most magnificent manner.
We too should dedicate our daily tasks to God and do them with love.
Do you go about your daily tasks with joy or do you complain about
what you are asked to do?

June 23, 2019 - Feast of Corpus Christi
“They all ate and were satisfied. And when the lefto-
ver fragments were picked up, they filled twelve

when we share what we have, even if it doesn’t seem
like that much, miracles can happen! Do not think
that your gift is too small or insignificant! God bless-
es all the gifts we offer and makes them wondrous.

pobres.

JUNE 23, 2019 MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT We have all heard the old adage, "You are what you eat." Nowhere else could these words be truer than at our Eucharistic celebration. Not only is the real presence of Christ recognized in the form of consecrated bread and wine, it is also located in the community which gath-ers to celebrate the Eucharist. At the liturgy of the Eucha-rist we become what we eat. Recognizing that we become the body of Christ can take us a long way toward rever-encing one another. Isn't there someone in your life, whom you care enough about to invite to the Eucharistic table? An invitation to come and hear more about the Catholic faith is not a pressure to come and join the Cath-olic Church. Inquiry sessions are held each week so that those who wish to ask questions about the Catholic faith family can do so in an informed, non-pressured atmos-phere. Not everyone who comes to an Inquiry Session makes a commitment to become part of the Catholic Church. All who are unbaptized, baptized into another faith denomi-nation, or baptized Catholic but have not received Eucharist or Confirmation, are invited. Inquiry sessions are for those who wish to inquire, explore, and search for ways to grow in relationship with God. For more information, call RCIA at 609-397-3350.
