Dear Parishioners,

“So, do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows”

Life matters! We are precious in the eyes of Our Lord. These words from this weekend’s Gospel reassure us how the Lord profoundly values all that has been created. We acknowledge the relationships in our lives that shape and form us.

I saw a bumper sticker recently that said, “The good things in life aren’t things”. If there is one insight that has affected me through these months of dealing with Corvid 19 is a much deeper appreciation in my life for the blessings that have surrounded me; my family, my faith, my priesthood, OLPH, my friends.

Happy Father’s Day! I extend my best wishes to all those men in our lives who have given life, given wisdom, given the gift of presence. Fathers matter and we acknowledge their influence today.

Typically, families gather to celebrate this day beginning with mass. Unfortunately, this year it is not possible for most. I have been thinking about how I could make this day special considering our gradual reopening and the many restrictions on public gatherings.

I would like to invite you to OLPH’s First Annual Drive By Father’s Day/Family Blessings and Communion celebration!

On this Sunday, June 21, from 10:00 until Noon, I will be on the steps of the Parish Center. Simply drive up, I will bestow a blessing for Fathers or anyone that would like one and then distribute communion to anyone in the car. Simple but in a special way we celebrate God’s love for us and the gift of the eucharist. All you must do is enter the parking lot off Glenview Road, pause in front of the parish center receive a blessing and communion and be on your way.

The reopening process took a major step forward this week. We began celebrating daily mass at 8:30 a.m. I must admit it was very powerful to finally see parishioners in our beloved church after so long. The first mass was made even more special because our new associate pastor, Deacon Larry Basbas celebrated his first liturgy here.

I was thrilled to receive a phone call last week from the Placement Board announcing that Cardinal Cupich was appointing Deacon Larry to OLPH. I had very low expectations we would receive an associate much less a newly ordained given the ever-growing shortage of priests. This appointment is yet another acknowledgement of the remarkable influence OLPH has had on the formation of newly ordained priests. This is a great place to learn the craft of priestly ministry. I thank you for your support and willingness to get involved in helping launch a newly ordained’s priestly ministry.

The early years are significant as a newly ordained priest makes the transition from the classroom to parish. It has been such a blessing for me here at OLPH to have ministered with Fr. Elliott Dees, Fr. Isaac Lara, Fr. Nick Kostyk and Fr. Patrick Kizza. What a gift to the church these exceptional priests are. They will forever be influenced by you, the parishioners of OLPH.

You will be hearing more about the soon to be ordained, Fr. Larry Basbas. He will be ordained to the priesthood on June 29th by Cardinal Cupich. Please pray for him. Veni Creator Spiritus!

One of our seminarians, Michael Lingauer, was ordained to the diaconate on Saturday, June 20 in St. Mary’s Cathedral in Gaylord Michigan. He will be returning for his final year in the Fall before he is ordained a priest for the Diocese of Gaylord, Michigan. Congratulations Deacon Michael!

Another event to celebrate is the arrival of our magnificent statue of the Blessed Mother who can be venerated in the Hellerman Garden. She was carved in Italy from marble that came from the same quarry that Michelangelo and DaVinci used. She is the gift of John and Katie Nicolau, Greg and Jeanne Eisinger, Mike Monticello and Karin Ulstrup, Kevin and Irene Shaughnessy and Ed and Mary Kay Haben to commemorate the 100th anniversary of OLPH. This is a generational gift that will be a source a spiritual comfort for generations of parishioners. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Special thanks to the family of Pat Cullen who marked the second anniversary of her death by assembling 100 brown bag lunches for the Northfield Food Depository. Our Blessed Mother is beaming with this act of kindness.

On a personal note, congratulations to my brother, Msgr. Mike Boland on his appointment to the staff of Catholic Charities USA. I am so proud of him. He will be moving to Washington DC. I am driving him and his belongings to DC next week.

May your week be blessed!

Our Mary has arrived!

At long last - Mary is here! All the way from the Spagnoli Marble Works in Carrara Italy, our statue of the Blessed Mother has arrived and has been permanently installed in the Hellerman Garden on the OLPH campus.

We soon will be scheduling a formal dedication for all parishioners to attend. In the meantime, feel free to visit her when you are able. The Hellerman Garden now is truly a place of peace, love, and prayer.

Special thanks to Mike Hrvojevic and his staff along with Bob Wilbat and his crew from Van Zelst Inc. who assisted in the installation, and also our vendor, Wheaton Religious Gift & Church Supply.

Contemplative Piano with Russell SternSaturday, June 20

Please join Russell Stern, our Director of Music Ministry, for a time for heart opening contemplative piano, on Sat., June 20 from 5:00 to 5:30 pm.

Russell welcomes you into his living room, where he will prayerfully improvise in the way that we have enjoyed during Mass in the past. He will also play his own arrangement of The Lord's Prayer by Malotte in honor of Father's Day which is the following day. Margie André will read an inspiring new poem that she wrote for the first contemplative session about music.

The first Contemplative Piano session was the day before Mother's Day. People commented about how they enjoyed it very much. At the same time, Russell learned a lot about how to make this work better technically thanks to people's feedback. For this session, please do not turn on your video (cameras) or your audio (stay muted). It will help the video and audio of Russell's piano performance be clearer. I have learned that if even one person has their video or audio on, it can limit the quality very much.

Please note that this is a live session, only accessible during that timeframe. This time, there is no need to RSVP. You can join the session by clicking on the following link using your smartphone or computer:

Sharing Parish News:The St. Sabina Academy Benefit which was postponed in March has been rescheduled for Sat., Oct. 3, at St. Sabina Academy.

This is a most important event for the school and the school families who have been adversely affected by the recent health and economic crises.

The mission of the school is to provide each child who attends St. Sabina Academy with a high quality catholic education in a safe and nurturing environment.

As in the past, the primary fund raising efforts for this benefit are the sponsorships, auction items, and raffle.

The faith community of St. Sabina is forever thankful for your past support and hope you can join them in supporting this year's event.

For more information please contact Bob Hicks.EMAIL – [email protected] – 847 724 5993

seek, share, rejoice - religious education...Fall Religious Education Registration is now open! Register today!Religious Education Registration for the fall of 2020 is here! With the Covid pandemic, our first priority at OLPH is the health and safety of everyone. OLPH Religious Education will follow public health, government and Archdiocesan recommendations and protocols. We will be social distancing, temperatures will be taken before entering the buildings and each classroom will be completely disinfected before and after each session. Masks are encouraged. Please contact us with concerns.

Three new class days In order to limit the number of students in each class and on the campus at the same time, we offer three additional class days this year. When we know numbers and what families prefer, we will assign classes. (If we do not have enough students for a particular day or time, a second choice may be necessary.) The new Sunday class, between Masses is only 50 minutes long. Those attending Sunday morning classes will meet 30 times instead of 24 and attend a special event each semester.

Appeal for CatechistsWith smaller classes and three new days of class, we are in great need for Catechists. Times are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday afternoon (4:30-6:00), Tuesday evening (6:30-8:00), Saturday morning (9:00-10:30) Sunday morning (8:40-9:30) and one Friday evening and Sunday per month for the Gather and Grow program. All grade levels needed. Have your own class or be a team teacher. Young and old welcome to volunteer.

Additional Options for traditional in classroom sessionsOptions other than the traditional classroom 24 session classes are Gather and Grow (a family program involving parents and children), e-learning, and Home Schooling. Gather and Grow has its own curriculum. With e-learning and Home Schooling, the curriculum would be the same as the traditional classroom program. Children signed up for e-learning and Home Schooling would be expected to join other students for two activities per semester.

Seventh and Eighth graders are not eligible for e-learning or Home School options as they are preparing for Confirmation and part of the dynamic is sharing the process with their classmates.

Fees remain the same this yearFees for Religious Education are the same as last year. A limited number of scholarships are available. Ability to pay should NEVER keep you from enrolling your family in any of the programs. Please contact the Rel. Ed. Office to discuss scholarships, payment plans and financial issues. We will work something out.

This link will take you to the Registration Page. (Please note: this link is being sent out in the daily eblasts.)

seek, share, rejoice - our parish school...

Following our End of Year Prayer Service, OLPH School families returned to campus in open sun roofs, decorated cars with homemade signs for a festive Last Day of School Car Parade. The entire school staff was present to greet our Warriors. With some fun tunes, loud honks, shouts of thank you and warm wishes, it was an emotional and uplifting experience for everyone. What a joyful way to end this school year and kick-off the summer of 2020!

Our GiveCentral Home PageAs you know, Sunday collections are vital to the health and sustainability of OLPH. We are always so thankful for the generosity of our parishioners. During this difficult time, we ask that you continue to support our church. With more and more restrictions in our ability to gather together or even leave our homes, it has become imperative that parishioners begin to utilize our GiveCentral online giving portal. We do understand that, up until now, some of us have been reluctant to switch from writing checks to using an online method. We seriously ask you at this time to try GiveCentral.

Accessing our GiveCentral Portal OnlineOn our website and in most of our eblasts you will see the Give Central Logo depicted here.

This logo will always be a live link to our OLPH GiveCentral homepage. Whenever you see this logo on our website or in an eblast, you will be able to click on it and it will take you directly to our portal.

Accessing our GiveCentral Portal from Your PhoneTo access our OLPH GiveCentral homepage from your phone, point your phone camera app at the qr code below. You will simply and easily be able to donate to our Sunday collection directly from your phone.

Or dial our text-to-engage number 570-354-6574 and then text the word "Sunday" to make your gift.Thank you and God bless you all as we work together to get through this national health crisis.
