Early bulletin submission: Due to the 4th of July holiday,
bulletin announcements for July 5 are due Thursday, June 25.
From the Pastor notas del párroco 3
1. Personnel Changes For various reasons,
including our desire to live within our means
and to be good stewards of the parish’s
money, starting July 1
st
we will be making
some changes to the parish staff. Some
positions have been eliminated and others
have had their hours reduced or duties
changed. I believe the following changes will
help us move forward in this time of
transition:
Jim Weiskopf will continue as our Director
of Administration.
Maria Murillo will no longer be in the parish
office. She will be taking on the new role of
Hospitality Coordinator. Maria’s primary
responsibilities will be to provide lunch for
our Early Childhood Learning Center and
assist parish organizations and ministries
with anything food-related. She will still be
available to assist our Spanish- speaking
parishioners.
Shari Heitmann will be our morning
receptionist and keeper of Sacramental
records.
Debby Marshall will be our afternoon
receptionist and will assist the ministry team
with events and record keeping.
Maureen O’Reilly will continue as the
Bulletin Editor and Child Safety Coordinator
and will help with other office
responsibilities.
Katie Markiewicz will continue to serve as
the Accounting Assistant, manage the parish
and ECLC payroll and assist with Human
Resources.
Michelle Foster will continue as our
Coordinator of Religious Education and will
run Vacation Bible School.
Julie Quillo will serve as our Parish Life
Coordinator (manager of the parish calendar
and facilities) and Director of Young Family
Ministries.
David Broemmelsick will continue as the
Director of Worship and Special Projects.
Maggie Schurz will continue to serve as our
Youth Minister and will also be in charge of
our Confirmation program.
Greg Barker will continue as Director of
Adult Faith Formation and Evangelization
and will also take on the role of Coordinator
of Spanish Ministry.
Imelda Cervantes will be leaving us because
she has decided to go back to school. We
wish Imelda the best of luck and we are
grateful for all she did in her time here as
Coordinator of Spanish Ministry.
Cathy Noyes will continue to serve as the
Director of our Early Childhood Learning
Center.
We are blessed to have Fr. Ricardo with us
and we look forward to having Fr. Jim
Holbrook join us in August.
*Starting on July 1
st
we will no longer have a
receptionist on duty in the Education Center
after 4:30PM and we have eliminated the part
-time accounting clerk position.
2. Coronavirus Changes (Updated 6/14)
a. 4PM Mandatory Mask Mass In an effort
to accommodate as many people as possible
with varying preferences, we have decided to
make our 4PM Mass on Saturday a Mandatory
Mask Mass, meaning that we will be requiring
everyone in attendance to keep their masks on
throughout the entire Mass. At all other
Masses masks are optional once you reach
your pew. Please wear a mask on your way in
and out of Church.
b. Sign-Up Genius The Archdiocese and the
CDC have asked that parishes have an online
registration for each Sunday Mass to help
with contact tracing. Please go to our parish
website www.stjoemanchester.org, follow the
link to the sign-up genius and sign up for the
Mass that you plan to attend. If someone tests
positive for COVID-19 and tells the CDC that
they were at “such-and-such” Mass, we will
then be able to inform you and you can take
the necessary precautions. If you come to
Mass and have not signed up ahead of time,
please check in with an ambassador.
c. Kneelers If you visit the Church (other
than for Mass), we are asking you to please
leave your kneeler down when you leave. This
will allow us to know what areas of the
Church need to be cleaned and sanitized
again. If you come into the Church and you
find a kneeler down, please leave it down and
sit in another spot. We plan to clean the
Church on weekdays between 9AM and
10AM and then again around 3PM-4PM.
3. Amazing Teachers Keep on Being
Amazing Our amazing teachers, with the
help of the PTO and School Advisory Board,
have created a lending library for the people of
the parish to use. The library is located in the
grassy area that separates the parking lot from
St. Joseph Lane. If you are looking for a good
book or you have a book to share please
consider using the lending library. Right now
there are a couple of benches located nearby
for people to use. If anyone would like to
make the area a little nicer and donate some
newer benches for this area please let me
know.
4. Furniture Wanted With the coming of a
new priest to the parish, I would like to
update some of the furniture that we have in
the houses that the priests use. We have two
maroon leather recliners and would
appreciate someone to donate a leather sofa
(or loveseat) to go with it. We are also
looking for a couch and recliner, in nice
condition, for the second house. If anyone has
a patio table that you wish to donate please
email me.
5. Large Group Gatherings We are still
waiting on permission from the Archdiocese
to host meetings inside our buildings. We
hope that this will be soon.
6. Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) The
Archdiocese has decided to go ahead with this
year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. When I first
heard about this decision I was really angry so
I called the director of the ACA. As we talked,
he explained to me that the ACA is needed
now more than ever because it is what allows
the Archdiocese to fund so many charitable
outreaches. The ACA helps fund the Respect
Life Apostolate which in turn helps fund post-
abortive healing ministries such as Project
Rachel, Project Joseph, and Rachel’s Vineyard
in addition to pregnancy resource centers. The
ACA also helps fund the Rural Parish
Workers whom we team up with at
Christmas time to assist the town of Fertile,
MO. Another area that the ACA assists with
is the caring for retired priests. I encourage
you to consider making a donation to the
ACA today from your heart.
7. Lily and Hammer Club Participation in
the Lily and Hammer Club has helped us
tackle the big issues of replacing our Church’s
heating and air-conditioning unit, renovating
our Early Childhood Learning Center, and
other smaller needed repairs. On behalf of
your fellow parishioners, I ask you to please
consider joining the Lily and Hammer Club
for the 2020-2021 year. Remember that
membership in the club is limited to four
hundred people and only costs $100. Our
monthly raffles will begin on the third Sunday
of July. To join, visit our website, click
ONLINE GIVING and scroll down to the Lily
and Hammer Club. As I write this note, I am
keenly aware that not everyone who may
desire to participate will be able to this year
because of contributions to the Legacy Wall
and the effects of the Coronavirus. While it
would be nice to sell all four hundred spots,
we would be ecstatic to sell at least one
hundred spots. This would allow us to cover
the Lily and Hammer Club prize money and
to continue ongoing maintenance and repair
projects. Thank you for your generous support
of St. Joseph Parish. Know that your donation
will be a big help in allowing St. Joseph Parish
to continue the amazing work it does.
“Through our prayers and
through the intercession of St.
Joseph, patron of fathers, may
fathers come to know the
irreplaceable role they hold in the
lives of their children, and the
responsibility they share in
welcoming God’s gift of new life!

For months the covid-19 virus
has dramatically altered everyday
living. Our St. Louis council
continues to recommend
suspended ‘in-person home
visits’ to our neighbors in
need. This policy will likely stay
in effect through August.
However, we are still making
phone calls and ‘virtual visits’.
We are helping our neighbors
pay housing, utility and many
other bills. If you or someone
you know needs help with food
or financial assistance please call
our St. Vincent de Paul office
phone at 636-779-5616. All calls
are confidential. We pray for
God’s loving grace and
protection.

working? There’s a lot of work to

Spiritual Ponderings
Go To Heaven
Let us continue to encourage each other to move toward heaven by gaining insights from Fulton
Sheen’s “Spiritual Road Map.” Archbishop Sheen sadly points out that people are more likely to
tell others to go to hell than to tell them to go to heaven. He writes, “Nobody ever says ‘Go to
heaven.’” He therefore wrote a book entitled Go to Heaven: a Spiritual Road Map to Eternity. Quotes
from the book will be in bold and my reflections on these quotes will be in normal font.
Escapists who want a religion without a cross call themselves agnostics in order to avoid the
moral consequences of truth.
No one enters into a branch of the military not expecting to go through boot camp. In the same
way no one should enter into a religion without realizing that there will be a time of preparation to
align ourselves with the mission of the organization. In his book Make Your Bed, Admiral McRaven
describes his experience of going through Navy Seal Training. At any time, if anyone wanted out of
the training, all they had to do was go to the center of the camp and ring a bell and that would
bring their training to an end. Denying the cross for the Christian is kind of like ringing the bell
because we are called to love and true love requires us to sacrifice our wants and desires for the
good of another.
Religion, too, requires a sacrifice; it is not a crutch, but a cross.
Carl Marx, the founder of communism, called religion “the opium of the masses.” He believed that
religion inspired people, especially the poor, to simply accept things as they were. I wonder if Carl
Marx ever really knew a Catholic or had ever really studied the history of the world. The Catholic
faith is in no way a drug that encourages people to accept the status quo. It is rather a force that
motivates Catholics to think beyond themselves and to change the world.
At one time, the Roman Empire was a place filled with much evil. For example, the Romans
practiced infanticide. When a child reached the age of eight days, he or she would be presented to
his or her father. If the father literally turned his back on the child, the child would be tossed out
into an alley to die of exposure. This great evil eventually disappeared from the Roman Empire
because of the Catholic Church’s teachings on the value of life.
According to some historians, the city of Rome at one time had more slaves living in it than free
people. Eventually slavery disappeared from the Roman Empire because of the Catholic Church’s
teachings regarding loving one’s enemies and the belief that all people were made in the divine
image.
One last example is that at one time the Roman Empire held gladiatorial games where men were
forced to fight against wild animals or worse, each other, in order to survive, and sadly this was
also considered some crude form of entertainment. These games were eventually banished because
of Catholic moral teaching.
The Catholic faith has inspired countless people throughout the ages to make the world a better
place. Mother Teresa, Dorothy Day, and Damian Molokai, are just a few saints who spent their
lives making the world a better place and, in the process, they inspired countless others to follow
their example.
An honest look at the daily life of any Catholic parish reveals quickly that the Catholic Church is
not designed for those who do not want to get involved. Every parish provides its parishioners
with countless opportunities to volunteer and make their world a better place. For example,
serving the poor through the Saint Vincent DePaul Society, teaching children how to play sports
through the Athletic Association, inspiring children through the religious education program,
going on mission trips, and frying fish for fish fries are just a few of the many activities Catholics
are encouraged to get involved in. Catholic Relief Services is the largest international aid service in
the world today.
One leans on a crutch, but a cross rests on us. A coward can use a crutch, but it takes a hero
to embrace a cross.
Married couples who stay together through many ups and downs are heroes. Teenagers who
remain chaste like God calls them to be are heroes. We also have what I would call redeemed
heroes, such as divorced couples who treat each other with respect. Women who find themselves
with unwanted pregnancies but choose life can be redeemed heroes. Moses was a redeemed hero.
He was a murderer who fled and left his people in slavery but God gave him a second chance. Paul
(Saul) was a redeemed hero. He was a murderer and a persecutor of Christians and yet God did
not abandon him.

As the universal Church begins a transition back to the celebration of public liturgies, many are still mindful of the need to practice
social distancing and have expressed concerns about using worship aids that have been handled by others. Aware of these concerns,
some dioceses are eliminating printed missalettes and encouraging parishioners to download digital editions or to carry a personal
worship aid. In response, MAGNIFICAT is offering special $5 subscriptions to enable the faithful to follow the liturgy with
personal copies of either a printed or digital edition of MAGNIFICAT. Details at www.magnificat.com/free.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least
spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.

A few items to note: All the faithful are dispensed from
the obligation of the Easter Duty and the obligation to
attend Mass on Sunday through June 30, 2020. The
faithful are obliged to wear a mask (or other face covering)
upon entering the church and during the celebration of
Mass, except while seated in the pew and for the brief
moment of receiving Holy Communion. Attendees will be
counted as they enter and attendance may be limited to
assure compliance with social distancing requirements. All
hymnals and missalettes have been removed from the
pews and stored for the duration of the pandemic. No
song sheets or other worship aids will be distributed. The
faithful are encouraged to bring their own missals or
hymnals for use during the celebration of Mass. Restroom
facilities are reserved for emergency use only. Please use
the restroom at home before arriving at the church. The
Sunday Mass recorded at St. Joseph is available on the
parish website. Daily Masses (Monday through Saturday)
from Bishop Barron’s private chapel are also available on
the parish website.

fellowship, a great talk, and grateful prayer. Due to COVID
precautions, this time there is no breakfast but also no charge for
a ZOOM online community meeting invitation. For Zoom details
and directions email [email protected], call 636-296-2903, or
fill out the form at StlRenewal.Org/ZPB. Details are at the CRC

Walking With God? Walk with us! The Benedictine Sisters of
Perpetual Adoration invite single women, ages 18 - 40 who are
considering religious life, to attend a Virtual Monastic Experience
via Zoom July 12-14, 2020. We hope to digitally show discerners
around, introduce some of our Sisters and share some tips on
prayer and discernment. The experience will include one hour of
input each day. There will also be an opportunity to connect with
the vocation director one on one. There is no cost to attend. Visit
our website to learn more: www.benedictinesisters.org. To
register, please call Sr. Maria Victoria at (660) 944-2221 ext. 127
or email [email protected].
