Second, to the unsung heroes like Melissa Law for all she has done and caring about the Post, Sara for all of her tireless efforts putting the Newsletter and Calendar of events, Karaoke King Tom (Petty) for the entertainment, those unique supporters of the Post- IE Poway Sign Company, Atlas Crane, Stater Bros. Home Depot, Barona and Sycuan Casino and our wonderful bartenders- TRex, Mike, Melissa, and Clint.

Third, to my wife, Loida and family (and my grandfather buried in Arlington, VA who earned the ultimate Purple Heart resulting in death), special friends and superb mentors (many PPCs and PSC). Appreciate the unwavering support.

Wishing the Post and Aux, all its members and family, happiness and health. CDR Don, you now have the watch. Godspeed..

Bill MorrisonFrom the auxiliary President

Attention Auxiliary members: A change in the regular monthly business meeting date, time, or location shall be approved by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the Auxiliary members present at such meeting. A motion will be presented at the June 11th meeting, possibly leading to a vote, to change our meeting date. Notification of such change will be sent to all Auxiliary members, via email and this newsletter.

Shari DunbarFrom the senior ViCe Commander

This year has been a challenging year for all of us. Our team had to work through some tough issues but planned and executed some fun activities and we’re ending this year on a positive note. Additionally, we now have some new members who are active, energetic, and have new ideas. I hope they find being involved with the VFW meaningful and have longevity here at our Post as many of us have had.

Thanks to Bill Morrison’s vision and concept of operations I believe the new leadership team will be off to a good start in July. I would like to thank all of you who volunteered or donated your time and talent. I’m looking forward to a prosperous year and will be looking for opportunities to help.

In Comradeship,

Vernon DuMoltFrom the Junior ViCe Commander

Greetings from the Jr. Vice,

It has been my pleasure this last year to represent our Post as the lead for Poppy relief. I’ve met so many great people…their generosity was outstanding and we were able to get donations from all walks of life. I want to thank all the volunteers that helped out this year as we could not have done it without them, especially the young men and women of the JROTC.

Also, I would like to thank all you wonderful people from the Post and Auxiliary for the generous donations throughout the year.

Lastly please welcome our new Junior Vice Commander Sal Pellerito and give him the support you gave me.

Warm regards,

Bill Kimble

Bravo Zulu of the MonthThe Bravo Zulu of the month is awarded to Howard and Shari Dunbar for cooking and serving Saturday night hot dogs. Shari also tended bar for the Dickie Boys breakfast while Fernando and Melissa took a much needed break.

From the Judge adVoCate

Comrades,

Well here we are at the end of another VFW year. My, how time does fly. This month I am writing about some rules of order while in our meetings.

The VFW By-Laws and Manual of Procedure give us information on how a meeting is to be held and how members should conduct themselves during a meeting. Any procedural matter not provided for by these Rules shall be governed by the current Robert's Rules of Order.

That said, Robert's Rules states that a member never speaks while seated (except when physically unable to stand.) Section 1001.4 of the Manual of Procedure states: When a member rises to speak, the member shall rise and address the presiding officer. When two or more members rise to claim the floor at about the same time, the presiding officer assigns the floor to the member who appeared to have risen first and addressed the chair. A member having the floor shall confine their remarks to the question before the body. Now I could not find this anywhere in the By-Laws or the Manual of Procedure but in my travels about the District, it appears to be customary that when a member addresses the chair or is addressed by the chair, the member will rise and salute the chair whether covered or uncovered.

Section 1001.6 states: No member shall in debate impeach the motives of a fellow member or treat them with disrespect. ... Any conversation calculated to disturb a member while speaking or hinder the transaction of business, shall be deemed a violation of order, and, if continued, the offending member shall be reprimanded by the presiding officer and may be ordered to retire from the room.

Okay, now that I did the Judge Advocate business, here is a plug for the Post. Fernando and Melissa have been doing a great job on Friday nights with the "Burger Burn". Honestly, I don't know how they cook them, but they are really tasty! So now they are doing a "Build Your Own" Hot Dog on Saturday nights. So come on to the Post, try a Hot Dog and dress it up with a variety of provided toppings.

Yours in Comradeship,

Bob Parks

From the surgeon

Comrades,

It has been wonderful serving in the nebulous role of 'Surgeon' this past year and I would like to thank all my fellow officers for everything they've done for the Post and for me personally. It's been a great year and I feel the team accomplished a lot. I look forward to continue seeing everyone at the Post and I imagine I'll look a little happier.

Movie quote of the month (free beverage of choice to the first person that corners me at the Post with the movie title of origin):

"Danny, is this the end? Of course not, it's only the beginning!"

From the Quartermaster

As your Quartermaster I’ve been busy getting the Point of Sale (POS) operational and working out issues that are found. The latest one concerned checks not being accounted for when it is used to pay for Hall Rentals. The software is being updated to resolve this issue.

Our Membership Chairman, Richard Anderson, has provided me 18 membership applications for processing.

In regards to Post finances we had an outstanding month in April and need to continue with events like the Adopt a Unit along with a Silent Auction as they have had a huge impact on our financial health. Thanks to the CDR for all his hard work with the Silent Auction.

Currently, Fernando is serving food along with Karaoke on Saturdays and will be serving up steaks once or twice a month. We need support to get these events to be as popular as our Burger Burn which would put the Post in a position for only more success. We are doing 110% better now than we were doing one year ago. Thanks to all those who are Making it Happen!!!!

Alan HeltonFrom the adJutant

Comrades,

I want to thank you all for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your Adjutant. It was a pleasure to work with all of you, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Everyone that I have met at the post is amazing and I am truly grateful to have crossed paths with each and every one of you.

This month's song is an easy one. If you catch me at the post before June 10th the next drink is on me to the first

person that guesses the artist name or song title:

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, That's amore; When the world seems to shine like you've had

too much wine, That's amore

Thank you for your time,

Alberto Vazquez

From the house Committee Chairman

Many thanks to the volunteers and members who make our post a great place for fellowship and camaraderie. I want to thank Tom Hausherr for continuing to volunteer his time every Friday and Saturday to be our Karaoke DJ. Please join us to enjoy a great meal and sing your favorite songs with friends and family.

Upcoming projects include remodeling the men’s and women’s bathrooms and cleaning the area behind the post to make it presentable again. We want to use this area as a picnic spot and be able to provide RV parking to traveling members once again.

We have a working party every Saturday to clean and work on various odds and ends. Volunteering is good for the soul and does a body good!

Thank you for your service!

Pre-Need Eligibility for National Cemetery Burial, Memorialization and assoc. benefitsThe following benefits are available to Veterans and their families:

VA provides for a final resting place for eligible Veterans, spouses, and their eligible dependents, as well as a headstone or marker, a flag to drape the casket and a Presidential Memorial Certificate.

Memorial or Burial Flags:A United States flag is provided, at no cost, to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased Veteran who served honorably in the U. S. Armed Forces. U.S. Post Offices are the primary issuing point for burial flags. Each family of a decedent is entitled to one flag.

Government Headstones or Markers:VA can provide a single headstone, columbarium niche cover, or a flat marker for a Veteran’s final resting place (private, state or national cemeteries).

Cemetery Medallions:VA can provide a medallion for use on a headstone or other memorial in a private cemetery to signify a decedent’s status as veteran. Multiple sizes are available.

Presidential Memorial Certificates:VA can provide a Presidential Memorial Certificate (PMC) to the family of the deceased Veteran. A PMC is an engraved paper certificate signed by the current President.

Burial Benefits and Burial Automatic Payments:Burial benefits are paid to a spouse, designated family member, or executor to partially offset the cost of burial expenses, plot costs, and transportation costs for a Veteran’s remains.

These benefits are paid at different rates based on whether the Veteran’s death was service connected or non-service connected.

If the Veteran was receiving VA benefits prior to their passing and had a spouse of record, these benefits will usually be paid automatically to that spouse. However, additional funds may be paid, or payment made to another party, if an application is completed. Additional benefits, including a plot or interment allowance and transportation allowance, may also be payable.

Note: An application for non-service-connected burial benefits must be submitted within two years from the date of death. There is no time limit for a service-connected death.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation:Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is a monthly tax-free benefit provided to an eligible surviving spouse, dependent child(ren), and/or parent(s) of a deceased Servicemember or Veteran.

DIC benefits paid to surviving spouses and children are not income based. Parents DIC is an income-based benefit for parents who were financially dependent on of a Servicemember or Veteran who died from a service-related cause.

Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program:The Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program offers education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of Veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service related condition or of Servicemembers who died during active military service or Veterans who died as a result of a service-related condition.

Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship:Provides children with financial support for tuition and fees, books and supplies, and housing.

You may be eligible for up to 36 months of Fry Scholarship benefits if you are the child of a Servicemember who died during active duty after September 10, 2001. You must use your benefits between your 18th and 33rd birthdays. You may still be eligible if you are married.

The 15-year time limitation for using Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits is eliminated for qualifying dependents (Fry children who became eligible on or after January 1, 2013 and all Fry spouses).

Survivors Pension:A net worth and income-based benefit paid to un-remarried surviving spouses and children of a wartime Veteran whose death is not service related. Survivors Pension pays a maximum annual amount, which is offset by the beneficiary’s income from other sources. Certain deductible expenses, such as un-reimbursed medical expenses, may be used to reduce the survivor’s countable income.

Special Monthly Pension Benefits:This is additional funds available to survivors in receipt of pension who are, due to a mental or physical disability, blind, require the aid and attendance of another person in performing daily activities, or are permanently housebound. Qualifying for this benefit requires medical evidence from a doctor or specialist.

The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs:A benefit that provides reimbursement for most medical expenses to certain surviving spouses and dependents of Veterans with permanent and total service-connected disabilities who are not eligible for TRICARE.

Home Loans:VA helps eligible surviving spouses become homeowners. This benefit may be used to help you buy, build, repair, retain, or adapt a home for your own personal occupancy.

Veterans Month of Death Benefits:If a Veteran who is receiving VA compensation or pension benefits passes away, their last month of benefits can be paid to their surviving spouse. This payment is usually automatic, but if it is not received, it can be claimed via a phone call to 1-800-827-1000, or through your County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO).

As always your Service Officer stands by to serve you...
