Patience is Divine
It seems to me the recent weather changes are really striking a chord in our otherwise much expected
routine. This spring has been quite unpredictable in its outlook, with its roller coaster trend. We have
had an extended winter leading to a rare snow in spring that had not been experienced for a long time.
We have seen the sun for a few times with our hopes being high that finally it’s here only to be
cautioned by the weather forecasters not so fast. The uncertainty of the weather has even disoriented
our thoughts and plans in life at times. Our conversations have centered around the weather with
some concerns and measured complaints as to what God might have in store for us.
Well to some extent can we say He is testing our patience? Especially when we have no control over
the weather? Patience is the word which we often least pay attention to or do not like to hear under
these circumstances. However, it could be the welcome and consolation word in our present
circumstances. It gives a cause to pause and acknowledge who is in charge and appreciate God for all
his grace and mercy. We are often used to a life of routineness filled with expectations and not
otherwise. But as reminded in Isaiah 55:8 “Our ways are not God’s ways, neither are our thoughts his
thoughts…”. So, what do we do under unusual circumstances as depicted by this weather? Another
scriptural encouragement comes from the psalmist in 27:14 “Do not despair but wait on the Lord” or
when we seem to have had enough and want to give up, again the psalmist cautions “Be still and know
that I am God!”.
What does this mean? Again, the word patience rings in our ears reluctantly with the attributes of
endurance and perseverance to strengthen us through such times. As a reflection of in life we often
encounter challenges which keeps us wondering, desperate, helpless, worried or what the case may
be. In moments as such we are called to be in prayer while waiting on the Lord in prayers as reflected
by the song “What a friend we have in Jesus…”.
The biblical testimonies of Abraham, Hannah, Joseph and others, are a few that we can relate to when
it comes to patience. They encompass the attributes of patience which include waiting, enduring and
perseverance. In the case of Abraham, he received an eternal promise and had to wait on the Lord’s
time despite the fear of his servant might be his successor. With Hannah it was adversity with ridicule
from her rival causing her to endure pain and suffering emotionally. Joseph’s, while looking
promising through his dreams, encountered long-suffering with betrayal from his brothers by being
sold into slavery, false accusation from Potiphar’s wife, being forgotten by the chief cup bearer whom
he had helped. Joseph endured and persevered through these tests to victory and glory.
Yes, in our despair, disbelief, disappointments and more reflected by the changing weather, we can
cry out to God, but as shown from our biblical heritage, patience with the attributes of prayer,
endurance and perseverance will see us through such times with victory in Jesus! Yes, patience is
divine, for through it we experience God’s faithfulness and his promise being fulfilled.

Who’s in the Pew?
Getting to Know Sam O’Dell
Hello All!
On June 24, 1996, I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. My parents, Cory and Becky O’Dell, have been
married for 33 years and have 4 boys: Daniel (26), Samuel (22), Joseph (17), and James (15).
I grew up just East of Indianapolis in a town similar to Burlington named New Palestine. The one
high school in the town has about 1,200 students. Throughout my life I played soccer, indoor soccer,
baseball, basketball, tennis, swimming, and golf. After high school, I attended Indiana University in
Bloomington, Indiana. I studied Finance, Business Analytics, and International Studies.
My International Studies major lead me across the pond to several countries, but I was based out of
Glasgow, Scotland. I lived in a “flat” with students from all over the world including Spain, Canada,
Italy, France, and Thailand. I was able to travel to Spain, Germany, Norway, Hungary, Ireland, Italy,
and Austria. My favorite stops were Barcelona for the vibrant lifestyle and beautiful weather, along
with Norway for its natural beauty and unbelievable sights. I met up with my cousin in the deep
mountains of Norway where we stayed in a cabin and hiked/skied in the snow. It was eye opening
and maturing traveling Europe mostly by myself.
I currently work at Nestlé in town but will be moving around January of 2020. I am a part of a
rotational program where we work in a factory for 18 months, work at corporate for 12 months
(Cleveland or DC), and then either/or for another 12 months. After the 3.5-year rotation, you are
eligible to be hired anywhere in Nestlé, so the 3 rotations are to help us determine what we like and
don’t like doing. The Burlington factory is fun and fast paced because something new is happening
every day. I support the candy side of things such as 100 Grand, Oh Henry!, Crunch, Raisinets, and
Goobers. For my next rotation, I am hoping to work with the Sales Finance team to help manage a
brand like Digiorno or Hot Pocket.
In my time here, I have been to a Green Bay Packers game (Go Colts!), a Badgers football game (Go
Hoosiers!), and a few Brewers games (Go Brewers!). On the weekends, I visit friends in Chicago and
Milwaukee, or I have friends visit me in Burlington! It is only about 5 hours from my hometown, so it
isn’t so bad to come and go. The quaintness of downtown Burlington is refreshing and allows me to
walk around and not feel the bustle of work or a big city.
I started attending Burlington United Methodist Church shortly after July 4th, 2018 when I moved
here. I attend the Saturday service and enjoy the family/community feel. It’s like I am right at home.
If we haven’t met yet, I promise I don’t bite…but I do enjoy a nice home cooked meal over
conversation.
Thanks for reading about me and my life! I look forward to more experiences to come in Burlington!

Congratulations Graduates!
On Sunday June 9th we will be honoring our graduates Emily Zuleger and Mike Rozell during the

grow and use the gifts and talents God has given them.
What’s Happening with the Church Mortgage?
When we underwent construction of our church (completed in 2006), our loan was financed by
Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation, Inc. The original loan amount was $850,000 with the
maturity date of the loan being July 1, 2020. Thanks to your faithful and generous giving to our
mortgage reduction fund, our balance as of May 21, 2019 is only $166,648.90. If no additional
payments are made towards principal, there will be a “balloon payment” due at the maturity date.
Our best “guesstimate” is the balance due will be less than $125,000.
Our Finance Committee will share with you the progress we are making toward our 2020 goal. With
God’s help, the “mortgage burning” is in sight!
Please pray and remember that as our mortgage is reduced and eventually eliminated, it will become
much easier to fund the truly important work of the church.
Thank You, Thank you, Thank you!
We would like to thank the members of our “traditional” choir that have been a part of our
Sunday morning service for many years. Your time, work and heart are appreciated!
Going forward, Ann Newman has volunteered to coordinate the different music groups,
soloists and musicians who will be sharing their talents with us. We appreciate your
dedication to the music ministry of our church!

How “Who’s Who in the Pew” and “Heavenly Tidbits” Came to Be
I thought some of you might be interested in knowing why I decided to write the articles in the
newsletter. No, it’s not that I’m nosey, but I saw where Sandi had suggested an article for the
newsletter and she didn’t get much response, so I approached her and told her what I had in mind.
She agreed we should try it. My reason was I was new here and getting to know people and by doing
so I found out a lot of interesting things and thought others might like to know more about who they
are sitting next to on Saturday night or Sunday morning. That, plus one of our members told me she
has been in the church for almost 40 years and there were some people she didn’t know other than to
say hello to. You would be surprised to read an interview to find out that so and so grew up in a place
close to you or worked at the same place your Uncle Stan worked back in the 50’s. Believe me, it has
happened. It’s also fun to find out how a couple met and how they ended up in Burlington. I find
other people’s lives interesting when they think they aren’t. I hope you enjoy reading about your
fellow “pew mates.”
Heavenly Tidbits came about when I asked someone about the beautiful cross behind the altar and
the Christmas Nativity Set we have, only to find out they weren’t bought but were given to the church,
and that was only the beginning. So many people either made things or have given things just
because they saw a need, asking to do so with no fanfare! Usually names will not be mentioned, but if
the person is deceased, I then feel it appropriate to honor them. You will be surprised by how many
things we have in this building that have made it what it is today. We have been blessed with a lot of
talented people!
I would like to thank Sandi for giving me the opportunity to do this. Claudia Williamson

Health and Wellness Committee
Our next meeting is June 27th at 6:00 p.m. The committee has been working with
Advocate Aurora to enable us to provide valuable information to our
congregation. The articles are provided by Advocate Health Care, featuring
different topics each month. These will also be inserted in the church bulletin
the first of each month. Following are June’s articles:
Connect Well for Health
Social life may play a larger role in a person’s health than one might think. A recent study from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill made a concrete connection between living a longer,
healthier life, and maintaining social connections.
The first of its kind, the study connected relationships with real measures of physical well-being,
including high blood pressure, abdominal obesity and inflammation — health issues that can lead to
long-term problems like heart disease, stroke and cancer. The research builds upon previous work
that found older adults live longer if they have more social connections. Researchers said the
conclusions from this study were even more promising — determining that a person’s social
relationships play a role in decreasing health risk.
Dr. Sudhir Gokhale, a psychiatrist at Advocate Christ Medical Center and Advocate Children’s
Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL, echoes the importance of social relationships at all stages of life. “The effect
of emotional health on physical well-being is being understood more and more clearly as research
continues,” says Dr. Gokhale. “This particular study points out the importance of quality and
supportive relationships in life.
Feeling connected with others seems to be showing a strong positive influence on reducing the risk of
depressive disorders,” he says. “And now we know it also has a strong impact on various physical
parameters.” Dr. Gokhale stresses that physicians and health care providers should also emphasize
the significance of social relationships on health as much as advocating for eating right and
exercising.
Prayer: Holy One, you created us to live in community. May we take care to nurture our relationships
with each other and bring love and care to those who are alone.
Church Ministries (Continued)
Faith Communities Support Social Relationships
Recent science affirms that having positive social connections is critically important for people’s
health--on par with eating well and being physically active. Building community and teaching about
positive ways for us to relate to each other is the natural work of faith communities of all religious
traditions. In a study conducted by Advocate’s Congregational Health Partnerships program,
congregations demonstrated 11 ways that they nurture social connection among their members and in
their communities.
1. Noticing and Inviting—Members notice people who are new, hurting or alone and connect them
with others and with opportunities to lead and participate;
2. Practical Support—Systems exist to offer food, transportation, child care, etc. in times of crisis or
on-going need;
3. Intergenerational Relationships—Adults know children and children feel known and appreciated.
Children have leadership roles;
4. Faith leader-led Community-Building—The faith leader models, educates and coaches ways to
build relationships among members;
5. Informal Socializing—There are opportunities for people to be together informally and for people
to gather outside of their usual group;
6. Learning Together—Regular times for learning, both spiritually and about issues of concern, and
for teaching each other;
7. Sacred Intimacy and Belongingness—Spaces exist for people to share deeply with each other about
their lives, struggles and hopes;
8. Worship Life—There are religious practices that help us connect with each other and that actively
use music and the arts;
9. Community Outreach—Members have relationships with people living in the community. The
congregation participates with initiatives that are priorities for the community;
10. Mission and Social Justice—The congregation uses its influence to improve conditions for people
in their community or around the world;
11. Small groups—Members gather in formal and informal small groups and intentional gatherings
around common concerns or experiences.
What are the ways that your faith community supports social connections? What more can you do?
What do you do that is not on this list?

Trustees Appeal
We are looking for folks with expertise in building maintenance like electrical, HVAC, plumbing,
general handyman/handywoman. If you have any skills in these areas, could we call on you for advice
or to fix a small problem? Additionally, we are looking for volunteers to help with the clean-up and
maintenance of the Playground Area, the Parking Lot Islands and the area by the Back Door. If you
alone, or with a friend or family, could choose one of these areas in which to help, our church could
look its best for the Glory of God. Adopt-A-Garden sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board in the
Gathering Area. Any questions, please talk with Dave Woerpel at church or by phone 262-763-6815
or email at [email protected]. Thank you so much and Blessings.
Angel’s Attic Mission Center
Angel’s Attic will be reopening for its 5th season on Thursday June 6th through Saturday October
19th. Hours will be Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Please note we are not open holiday weekends nor during church events. Proceeds from Angel’s Attic
will be going to local, national and international charities. Donations are gratefully accepted during
hours of operation ONLY or by appointment (please call the church office). Please DO NOT leave
items in front of door as the Crossroads Room is used by several groups. We request that all items
donated be CLEAN and in saleable condition (please, no clothing, shoes, or electronics). A donation
slip is available upon request. Word of mouth and signage is the only form of advertising, so
PLEASE . . . stop in and check it out. You will be amazed at the great “finds” at such affordable
pricing. Our friendly volunteers welcome your visit and remember, you do not need to be a BUMC
member to donate your “gently enjoyed” items. We are in need of small furniture, jewelry and
household accents.
WI Annual Conference Kits
Once again, BUMC will provide “Conference Kits” for Pastor Insor to take to the Annual Conference.
Please pick-up the list provided in the Gathering Area, choose the type of kit you would like to make
(according to the instructions listed) and return to church no later than Sunday June 9th. A basket
will be placed in the Gathering Area for your COMPLETED kits. Monetary donations can be
substituted for kits, if preferred. Please place monetary donations in an envelope marked “Attention
Donna Reesman” and place in the church office. For questions, please contact Donna Reesman at

How to Stay Young
1. Try everything twice: On one woman’s tombstone she said she wanted this epitaph:
“Tried everything twice. Loved it both times.”
2. Keep only cheerful friends: The grouches pull you down. (Keep this in mind if you are one of those
grouches.)
3. Keep learning: Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever…Never let the brain
get idle. “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” And the devil’s name is Alzheimers!
4. Enjoy the simple things.
5. Laugh often, long and loud: Laugh until you gasp for breath. And if you have a friend who makes
you laugh, spend lots and lots of time with HIM/HER.
6. The tears happen: Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life is
ourselves. LIVE while you are alive.
7. Surround yourself with what you love: Whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies,
whatever…Your home is your refuge.
8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you
can improve, get help.
9. Don’t take guilt trips: Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT
to where the guilt is.
10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity: I love you, my special friend!
11. Forgive now those who made you cry: You might not get a second chance….And if you don’t send
this to at least 4 people – who cares? But do share this with someone.
REMEMBER! LOST TIME CAN NEVER BE FOUND. Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you
meet is fighting some kind of battle.
WE ALL NEED TO READ THIS ONE OVER AND OVER UNTIL IT BECOMES PART OF WHO WE
ARE!
