June 2019 Newsletter
Dear Parent/Carer
It’s hard to believe that we are rapidly approaching the last few weeks of another
academic year. In recent weeks I have been discussing with the pupils in Years 5 and 6
about the importance of creating a good first impression when meeting your next class
teacher. We all know how important it is to create the best first impression. On school
trips, members of the public often remark upon the exemplary behaviour of our school
pupils. Visitors to our school comment on the calm atmosphere and how well our
pupils behave. At Chadwell, we continually remind our older pupils of the importance
of replicating these high standards of behaviour beyond the school gates within the
local community, as it is important to keep themselves safe beyond the school gates.
It is with regret that we have to say goodbye to 2 members of our teaching staff. Mrs
Peters has been at the school for 9 years. She has taught across both Key Stage 1 and 2
as well as leading the development of a curriculum subject. Mrs Peters has secured a
promotion at a school closer to home. I would like to thank Mrs Peters for her
commitment to the school and wish her the very best of luck in her new role.
Miss Bowes started her teaching career at Chadwell 3 1/2 years ago. During this time
she has taught in both Key Stage 1 and 2. She has also led on the development of a
curriculum subject. Miss Bowes travels a significant distance to get to work and has
taken the difficult decision to move onto pastures new and has secured a new post
much closer to home. I wish Miss Bowes the best of luck and thank her for her
commitment to the school over the last few years.
We continue to promote the importance of regular attendance. Currently our
overall attendance percentage is just below the national average figure of 96%, at
95.72%. We do have a number of classes that are significantly above the national
figure of 96%; Caruso class are the highest at 97.32%. Well done to Caruso. Soon we
will be having the prize draw for those pupils who have achieved 100% attendance for
either the Autumn, Spring or Summer term. I look forward to seeing each child’s face
light up when they hear their name called as a winner.
We have a number of upcoming events in the next few weeks: Summer Fair, Exhibition
Evening, Summer Music Concert and our school production of The Lion King, so I look
forward to seeing you at these events. Details of upcoming events can be found in the
newsletter.

The Lion King Production
Chadwell Primary School are delighted to announce details of our upcoming performance of 'The Lion King' Students across KS2 have been working hard alongside Mr Nordon and Mrs Peugniez to rehearse scenes and learning songs for what promises to be a wonderful, entertaining adaption of this famous story. KS2 children have been learning songs from the production in their singing assemblies with Mrs Peugniez, who has kindly recorded these and added them to our Music at Chadwell blog. Children are now able to familiarise themselves with these songs by visiting: http://musicatchadwell.blogspot.com/ There will be three performances taking place on Monday 8th July and Tuesday 9th July, with tickets available from the School Office from Wednesday 26th June priced at £5 for adults and £3 for students. The performance details are as follows: Monday 8th July: 1.45 (Main Hall) Monday 8th July: 6.30 (Main Hall)

Class Competition – Penny Race
Chadwell Primary School gave each class a container to put any
spare copper coins in.
MOZART Class won with a grand total of £68.94
The class are considering their options for spending their
winnings at the moment.
The rest of the money was collected from all other class buckets
and the children raised a fantastic £154.68
This money will be spent by School Council on projects they
believe will benefit all pupils.
Well done to everyone who has helped raise so much money!
The race now begins again…
The school has recently subscribed to a new service which
helps to keep staff and parents up-to-date with what is
happening online.
This includes trends in new games as well as warnings about
online threats and dangers.
We will soon be sending out invitations to all parents to
participate in the electronic learning modules included in
this subscription.
More details will appear in the next newsletter and the
invitations to create your account are due to be sent in July,
so watch out in your email for further details.
Thank you for your help in making Chadwell Primary a safer
place for all.

What have School Council been up to?
On Tuesday 25th June, School Council had a special meeting with a
representative from the Borough of Redbridge.
Mr Haque is part of a project team at Redbridge Council that is driving forward
an initiative to make Redbridge a UNICEF accredited child-friendly borough. As
part of this project, he has been engaging with some primary schools across the
borough to get feedback from pupils on what they think the key priorities
should be in helping to deliver this project.
He asked them how they would improve the area they live in. The children were
very keen to put their opinions across. Hannah in Hepworth suggested that
people get together to pick up all the rubbish, this could be a community event;
posters could be created saying ‘Don’t Drop Litter’ with a fine if you do; plant
more trees on the high roads to reduce pollution.
Oriana in Caruso suggested no car zones around schools; Owais in Gandhi
wanted more hospitals and to improve the uneven pathways. Shaan in Turing
would like alleyways to be lit up better to make them safer. Jujhar in Turing
asked for more police and more crossings near schools so that children feel
safer when going to school.
Obi in Caruso was concerned about teenagers hanging around and causing
trouble and he thought that this was because they had nowhere to go. He
suggested more Youth Clubs and things for them to do might help and Owais
added that this would also get them away from using technology all the time.
What have School Council been up to?
Mr Haque then gave the children a list of things that they needed to vote on
that they thought they needed to concentrate on to make the borough
child-friendly.
Being healthy got 1 vote; Participating (taking part in activities with others)
got 2 votes; Flourishing (being able to do well at what you put your time
into) got 1 vote; Child friendly policies (people making decisions that are
good for children) got 1 vote and Feeling safe and secure got 16 votes.
Mr Haque will now take his results and collate them with the other schools
that he has visited. The borough will then pick the top three to focus on as
chosen by the children. He will come back to us with feedback and maybe
more questions in a few months.
The School Council represented the school very well and Mr Haque
commented on how good they all were with ideas and suggestions. He was
impressed that all the children took part not just a few.
Well done Chadwell School Council!
STEM—DT Workshop
All Classes across the school took part in a Design and Technology workshop
with Mr Paul which involved working in small groups to build a structure strong
enough to support a tennis ball. The only materials they were allowed to use
were paper straws and masking tape. The students combined their
mathematical, engineering, design and problem solving skills to create some
fantastic structures.

On Friday the 7th
of June, all classes in the school attended a Science
assembly. During the assembly, Mr Mackie discussed with the children why
Science and STEM is important in our society. We also discussed what
possible jobs they could do if they followed a career in STEM, from an
underwater archaeologist to a computer game programmer. Mr Mackie
(with the help of the children) carried out a few experiments to see the
wonder of Science. In the first experiment, we blew up a balloon using just
vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. We observed how putting water into a
balloon prevented it from popping when being burnt by fire. For the second
experiment, we were able to float a table tennis ball using a hair dryer. The
final experiment was the best, we had a bag full of water that did not leak
when you stuck pencils through it. We had some brave teachers sit under
the bag as we tested it out .
STEM - Science Assembly
STEM - Prizes
During STEM fortnight, we held two competitions. The first competition was
to design a poster to promote STEM fortnight. We had many fantastic
designs, but could only choose three winners. Our winners for the poster
competition are: Bibek from 1 Shackleton, Melanie from 4 Franklin and
Laveen from 5 Luther King. Well done to those children.
For the second competition, the children brought in their own amusement
park models that they had made at home. As always, we were blown away
by how creative and fantastic the models were. It was very clear that lots of
children had really worked hard to produce these amazing models. After
many difficult discussions, we were finally able to choose 4 winners. Our
winners for the models competition are: Sudiksha from Andreae class,
Ibrahim from Shackleton class, Reign from Hepworth and Harmeet from 6
Simone class.

Year 3 Ancient Egypt
Freshwater Theatre Workshop
On Tuesday 11th
June 2019, Freshwater Theatre visited
Chadwell Primary School to conduct a workshop about
Ancient Egypt. Children had an opportunity to engage
in some drama, dance and writing activities as well as
learn about the process of mummification. Year 3 really
enjoyed dressing up like Ancient Egyptians and
thoroughly enjoyed all the activities.
On Thursday 6th
June 2019, Freshwater Theatre visited
Chadwell Primary School to conduct a workshop about
Ancient Greeks. Children had an opportunity to engage in
some drama, play a Greek game as well as understand how
‘democracy’ worked during this period. Year 5 really enjoyed
dressing up like Ancient Greeks and thoroughly enjoyed all
the activities.
Year 5 Ancient Greeks - Freshwater Theatre Workshop
Here are some comments from our children:
“What I enjoyed is that we played a lot of games and
learnt a lot of things about Greece.” (Amrita 5 Gandhi)
“In conclusion, the part I most enjoyed was when we
played a Greek War Board Game. It was called Pettia,
this is because there was a lot of thinking
involved.’ (Dawid, 5 Luther-King)
“After that, he told us about the Peloponnesian war
between Athens and Sparta. It started at 431BC and
end at 404BC.” (Nabia, 5 Luther-King).
STEM Fortnight DT Projects
This year the theme for STEM fortnight was all about ‘Theme Parks’. Each
year group created a fairground attraction. The children had to research,
design, make and evaluate their products. This what the children have
made:
Year 1- Cars
Year 2- Boats
Year 3- Lighthouses
Year 4- Bumper cars
Year 5- Chair-o-plane
Year 6- Ferris wheel

to recognise 2d and 3d shapes and build a cube.
PM Nursery taking part in a Maths Workshop
On 18th June, Years 5 and 6 took part in their sports day and what a day it was! Luckily the sun was
shining in the morning which made it more enjoyable.
There were two events throughout the morning, these were the Spring Race and the Carousel
(eight activities)
The activities were:
Football Dribbling
Beanbag on Head Race
Three-legged Race
Egg and Spoon Race
Vortex Throw (how far can you throw the nurf)
Bocce (who can throw the bocce closest to the tennis ball)
Speed Bounce Relay (jump over the hurdles ten times)
Each child in the same year group had the opportunity to race one another! Each race consisted of
six children, the first two children were placed into the semi-finals. Once this was all complete,
there were two semi-finals and the fastest three boys and girls from their race got entered into the
final.
The finals consisted of six boys racing against each other and six girls again racing against each
other. The finals were very exciting to watch as the children were very quick and keen to win.
The Year 5 and 6 winners, runners up and third place positions are as follows.
Boys, year 5;
1st Steven (Malala)
2nd Essa (Gandhi)
3rd Danyal (Malala)
Girls, year 5;

Sports Day
On Wednesday 12th June, 45 children from Chadwell Primary School
travelled to Ilford Town Hall to perform with 9 other schools from
Redbridge. They performed a selection of pieces together with all the
schools and Chadwell were only one of two schools selected to play a
special solo. We played ‘Sharks and Lions’ arranged by Mrs Peugniez. In
addition, they listened to solos from the Redbridge Music
School ensembles and were wowed by Pallisander, a quartet of professional
recorder players who played the recorder unlike anything they had heard
before!. Well done to all the children in Recorder Club who performed and
thank you parents for getting then there in time.
