    JUNE SPEAKER:

    Kenneth H. Cooper, MD, MPH

Kenneth H. Cooper DAPS Lifetime Achievement AwardSponsors

Recognized as the leader of the international physical fitness movement and credited with motivating more people to exercise in pursuit of good health than any other person, Dr. Kenneth Cooper has long advocated moving the field of medicine away from disease treatment to disease prevention. The Cooper philosophy, "It is easier to maintain good health through proper exercise, diet, and emotional balance than to regain it once it is lost,” has been proven valid in scientific research.

In 2017, DAPS honored Dr. Cooper with a special emeritus award for his contributions to improving the lives of those affected by Parkinson’s disease. DAPS will continue to honor his legacy and acknowledge his contributions in the field of Movement Disorders by awarding the Kenneth H. Cooper, MD, MPH Lifetime Achievement Award to a deserving candidate annually.

Join us at this year’s event, during which we will present the 3rd annual Lifetime Achievement Award to Cheryl Sutterfield-Jones, President and CEO of Frontiers of Flight Museum. Dr. Cooper will share his vision that being connected to a group or class helps people accept their condition, and exercise helps their physical well-being. You will also be inspired by stories of Cheryl’s achievements and contributions to the community.

In English—Thank you! Or to quote Elvis, “Thank you, thank you very much!”

Thanks continued from front page Medication Managementby Holly Smith

Anyone living with Parkinson’s disease (PD) understands how confusing and frustrating it can be to manage medications. Michael McGiboney, RPh, knows the challenges firsthand. A Director of Pharmacy over children’s hospitals for Vizient, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in August 2017 after being a caregiver for his father, who also had PD.

As the guest speaker for the DAPS October General Meeting, Michael talked about the diferrence between a pharmacist's knowledge of drugs versus a patient's understanding of drugs prescribed. “I want to help fill in some gaps in managing prescriptions for patients,” he said.

Some Parkinson’s patients rely on single-drug therapy, which may help manage symptoms, but with increased dosage can also cause increased side effects and decreased effectiveness. Multiple-drug therapy, or using different drugs that work via different pathways, is another option to treat PD; however, this method can be more expensive and make tracking dose times more difficult. Advantages to using multiple-drug therapy include improved outcome, reduced dosages of each medicine, reduced expense, and reduced side effects. Michael also discussed how these side effects can be different for each patient. “Probabilities listed in literature are for the number or percentage of all patients taking a specific drug that may have a certain effect, not probability that one person will have a side effect,” Michael said.

Medication management is an important part of drug therapy. Issues with medication management can cause dizziness, instability, falls, confusion, loss of energy, and repeat doctor visits. “It has been found that ten percent of all hospital visits are due to medication mismanagement,” said Michael. Some things that can be done to prevent medication mismanagement include maintaining a current and comprehensive list of medications, making sure care partners have a copy of the list of medications, and keeping track of medications with pill reminders and organizers (pillboxes). “The best method to track your medications is the easiest one for you to use,” he said. Advantages to using pillboxes are, ideally: they hold everything (preferably for a week); they are

portable and well labeled; and they are easy to get into, but secure enough not to pop open. Phone apps are also a way to track and organize medications. App benefits include readily available medication lists and photos, as well as drug interaction information and pharmacy contacts. However, some practical problems for Parkinson’s patients using apps are that they can be hard to see, they need a steady hand to be used, and setup can be challenging.

Medication management can be frustrating, but by keeping the lines of communication open with your doctor, and taking advantage of methods to track medication and dosing, the frustration can be alleviated.

We are very grateful to Michael and the members of the Vizient pharmacy team who were at the meeting and took time to meet with attendees, answering pharmaceutical and medication-related questions, as well as helping to install apps on phones.

Holly Smith is an employee of Vizient, Inc., and a volunteer for Dallas Area Parkinsonism Society.

Your brain is a mysterious organ that researchers are still trying to better understand. Brain Awareness Week is a global campaign that raises public awareness about the progress and benefits of brain research, including research into the causes of Parkinson's disease (PD) and how to treat it. This year we wanted to provide you with 12 ways you can enhance your cognitive function, starting right now:

    1. Keep LearningChoose activities that keep your brain working. Set out to complete a complex goal or learn something new. Start with watching a new video on our YouTube channel.2. Eat a Healthy DietFollowing the Mediterranean Diet can help people with Parkinson's slow levadopa absorption into the brain. This diet not only helps the brain, but can reduce blood pressure and cardiovacular disease. 3. Take a Book with YouReading is a complex task that requires multiple parts of the brain to work together. A complex book can improve

memory and cause positive neurological changes that last even after you stopped reading.

    4. Stay SocialStaying social has been proven to help retain cognitive sharpness. Surround yourself with people who make you laugh and smile, or make new friends at Parkinson’s support groups. Get to know us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.5. Keep Calm Stress of any kind can temporarily worsen PD symptoms. Meditating just 15 minutes a day can bring a sense of calm and the ability to see things more clearly.

    6. Get Enough SleepMaintain a regular sleep schedule; get up and go to bed the same time every day. Not sure where to start? Try Sleep: A Mind Guide to Parkinson's Disease.7. Keep Track of MedicationsEstablishing a daily routine helps keep you on track with medications and exercise regiments. It can also help with sleep and digestion issues. Watch this guided meditation video to get started now. 8. Increase Your Heart Rate Intense exercise can improve efficiency of your brain cells using dopamine and lessen PD symptoms.

    9. Give Your Brain a WorkoutCreativity in everyday life provides excellent mental stimulation. Vary your activity to keep the mind strong and healthy. Draw, paint or write your My PD Story.

    10. Groove to the MusicListening to music can improve memory. Singing and dancing to a song helps cognitive and physical functions. Research shows that exercise, social stimulation and singing can help postpone PD symptoms.

    11. Drink CaffeineSeveral studies have shown that caffeine may reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s. A cup a day may also help with motor symptoms, boosting memory and lowering the risk of depression.

    12. Laugh Out LoudLaughing stimulates different areas in the brain. Some studies show laughing can also improve short-term memory. Watching a funny movie or cat video is also a natural stress reducer
