INFORMATION SHEET ENSEMBLE PLACEMENT AUDITION DUE JULY 1, 2019 All campers will be placed in classes and ensembles with players of similar level. Your audition recording will help to us to determine your placement in these groups. If you have not already done so, please submit a 3-5 minute sample of your flute playing. Your audio recording (mp3 format), or video recording (via an unlisted Youtube link), must be submitted via email to [email protected] by July 1st.

Your audition recording should include the following:

Chromatic Scale: 2-3 octaves, ascending and descending, starting on low C.

A selection from a solo piece or etude of your choice that you feel best demonstrates your lyrical and technical abilities.

There will not be ensemble placement at auditions at the camp; therefore, it is important that you send us your audition recording by July 1st. If you do not send a recording, we will determine your placement using the information you provided on your application.

Check-In Check-In will be held from 11:30 a.m.-12: 45 p.m. on Sunday, July 7, 2019 in Fricker Hall, 1022 West Starin Road (see campus map: http://www.uww.edu/campus/). All campers, Resident and Commuter, should register during this time. You will receive your meal band, T‐shirt, room assignment, and name badge at Check-In. COMMUTERS Commuter Campers can arrive at the designated Check-In Time and Location. Commuters will not receive a room key for the residence hall but are welcome to hangout in the residence hall with friends during breaks. Only Lunch and Dinner will be served to commuter campers. Report to camp before the first session of the day after breakfast. Authorized driver can pick up commuter camper at the conclusion of camp after Checking-Out. If you plan to leave your car here during the week, you will need a parking permit ($10.00) so you do not get a ticket. The camp director will have these at Check-In. Late arrivals should report to the Center of the Arts Building. If you are a late arrival, please call 262-472-3165 to inform them. Please be sure you have had lunch before your arrival Please remember to fill out the online Medication Form if bringing medication. At 1:00 p.m. we will have a camp meeting in the Recital Hall, Center of the Arts, 950 W. Main Street. At this meeting we will introduce the camp staff to you, go over the camp rules, and go over the camp daily schedule. At 1:30 p.m., we will kick off the week’s performances with our Faculty Flute Recital. After the recital, we will begin flute choir rehearsals, and there will also be a campus tour

followed by a pizza dinner in the Atrium of the Center of the Arts. In the evening, you will meet with your coaches and small ensembles (quartets and trios) to begin rehearsing. ATTENDANCE Attendance is mandatory at all camp classes, rehearsals, concerts, and other scheduled activities. Students may not leave campus at any time during the camp without written permission from parents and the head counselor. AWARDS The UW‐W Flute Camp will be awarding a number of scholarships to next year's camp. These awards will be determined by the camp staff and announced at the final concert. FINAL RECITAL & CHECK OUT The Flute Camp Final Recital is on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall. All campers will perform in one of the three Flute Camp Flute Choirs and a select number of small Honors Ensembles will also perform. Campers will be dismissed after this recital to pick up their belongings in the dorms. We estimate finishing no later than 5:45 p.m.

At the UW-Whitewater Flute Camp you will have the opportunity to develop and refine your skills as a soloist and as a member of both a small and large chamber ensemble. Campers will be placed in ensembles and classes (Tone/Technique and Repertoire) with other players of similar level. Please see the enclosed Daily Schedule for details. Tone/Technique Class: Improve your tone, vibrato, and intonation while building all aspects of your technique from articulation to posture and balance in this daily warm-up class. Small group classes with 3-4 players of similar level. Repertoire Class: Get feedback on pieces you are working on, learn tips for collaborating with a pianist, and beat performance anxiety in this faculty master class hour. Content varies daily. Solo performance is optional although encouraged. Group classes with 6-10 players of similar level. Elective Classes: Explore a variety of fun topics and build new skills!

Improvisation Through Dalcroze Eurhythmics (Emma Shubin) Explore improvisation while improving your rhythm and sense of pulse in this experiential, movement- based class. Piccolo Class (James Donahue and Dulce Rodriguez) Tame the Tiny Beast! Beginner and advanced piccolo classes. Players will be placed in small group classes with players of similar level. **Please bring your own piccolo, or borrow one, for camp. If you do not have access to a piccolo, please contact Dr. Ballatori by July 1st ([email protected])

Extended Techniques (Shanna Gutierrez) Explore creating new sounds on the flute through extended flute techniques like singing and playing, multi-phonics, and more!

Yoga for Musicians (Emma Koi): Stretch, balance, and breathe! World Flutes (James Donahue) Discover the sounds and traditions of flutes from around the world.

Flute Choir (Cristina Ballatori and Dulce Rodriguez, Directors): Explore fun repertoire for flute ensemble! Each camper will be placed in one of three flute choirs based on level and all groups will prepare a program to perform in the Final Camp Recital on Thursday afternoon in the Recital Hall. Chamber Music Each camper will be placed in a flute quartet, or trio, and ensembles will receive daily coaching with faculty and staff. All chamber groups will perform in a chamber recital on Wednesday evening in the Fern Terrace at Young Auditorium. After this concert, faculty and staff will select a small number of “Honors Ensembles” to perform their pieces again on the Thursday afternoon in the Final Camp Recital. Be sure that you bring all solo music and etudes you wish to work on during the week. Please bring piano accompaniments if you would like to perform the solos for feedback during Repertoire Class during the week (Repertoire Class performances are optional although encouraged!). The faculty will collect your piano accompaniments at Sunday night’s Flute Choir/Group Meeting to give to our accompanist.
