Fairview family and friends,
It’s hard to believe that summer is almost here! School is out, the
temperatures are getting hotter, and now we long for those cool fall days (and
perhaps are even wishing for some snow again)! At the end of this month we will
hold Vacation Bible School (VBS) for a week of teaching, music and fun for
children of all ages. (Many hands and feet are needed to help make this ministry
happen, so remember, when Katherine Lewis calls asking you to serve, “just say yes!”) VBS is a chance for
children in our community to hear the good news of Jesus Christ and experience the love of Christ. For some
of these children, this may be the first time they’ll have the gospel shared with them, and for others this may
be the only time they come to church all year.
These truths remind me of just how important it is for us to take seriously the call of Christ to “go and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). We live in the city of
churches and yet there are children, youth and adults in our community who do not know the love of Christ in
their hearts and lives. There are families struggling with addiction, hunger, violence, and more. These families
need to know the good news of Jesus’ crucifixion, death, and resurrection in their lives so they can experience
the freedom, forgiveness, and new life that is possible today.
This begins with our willingness and eagerness to share God’s love with others. Our youth mission team
is in Kentucky the first week of this month doing this very work through the UM ARMY. As they help with
construction and other projects they are also sharing their faith and the love of God through Christ with others.
We will do this important life-changing work with the children who gather at the end of the month for VBS,
but our call is not limited to these couple of opportunities.
Last year, the Evangelism Committee challenged the congregation to bring a friend to church for our
church picnic – and you all responded faithfully to it! Our church picnic was an awesome morning of worship
followed by a great meal, music, fun, fellowship, and pies for our staff for each friend who came! This fall the
Evangelism Committee will be challenging you to invite a friend again for our church picnic (date TBA), but I
want to challenge you to do this each week. Invite a friend, neighbor, co-worker, or family member who
doesn’t know Jesus Christ as their savior to come worship with you, attend your Sunday School class or Bible
study, come to youth group or JUMP, or other ministries and events at Fairview.
With so much hurt, pain, and suffering in the world, we can be part of spreading God’s love by sharing
hope and caring for others in their time of need, but we must be intentional, devoted, committed followers of
Christ to do so. Think of where you would be today — how you would face each day — without a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ. Be in prayer for all those who feel hopeless, lost and broken each day and ask
God to open the door for you to share Christ with them in the coming days. And as you do, remember Christ’s
promise in the last verse of Matthew 28, “and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Thanks be to God!
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Coffey
June 15-17, Virginia United Methodist lay delegates and clergy will gather in Hampton for the 2018
VAUMC Annual Conference. Along with annual business, reports, worship, and more, this year’s gathering will
include a day of service in and around the Hampton area. Please keep our Fairview delegates and pastor in your
prayers for Annual Conference.
In 2019, the UMC will hold a special general conference to look at the work and discernment of the Council
of Bishops and Commission on a Way Forward.
At their most recent meeting, the Council of Bishops approved a motion from their process of prayer and
discernment which will be submitted in July as a proposal for the special called general conference in 2019. The
motion is a One Church Plan which provides conferences, churches, and pastors the flexibility to reach their
missional context and remain connected as one UMC. In this plan, the restrictive language around human sexuality
would be removed from the Book of Discipline while providing assurance that no pastors or conferences would be
required to perform same-sex weddings or ordain homosexuals against their theological convictions. This motion
will be outlined more fully in July when it is submitted for general conference, and this motion along with any
others received will be considered and voted on in 2019 at the special general conference. More information and
updates can be found at https://vaumc.org/WayForward and http://www.umc.org/who-we-are/commission-on-a-way
-forward.
In addition, the Danville District will hold informational meetings on Sunday June 3 to share more about
this upcoming special general conference. There will be one from 2:00-3:30 pm at First UMC in Martinsville and
from 4:30-6:00 pm at Rocky Mount UMC in Rocky Mount. All are invited to come learn more as we pray and look
ahead at the mission and ministry of the UMC.

BACKPACK MINISTRY
Jesus said in Luke 22:26-27, “. . .but let him who is the greatest among
you become as the youngest and the leader, as the servant. . .I am among
you as one who serves.”
What a joy and privilege it has been to see how our congregation, whether
older or younger, became servants as we lifted up and served the hungry children
from Park Avenue Elementary School. This ministry has delivered 104 bags to be placed in the backpacks of
104 children every week from September through May. The last 104 bags for this school year have been
delivered!
It is with great gratitude that we thank each “servant” who participated, set up, packed, delivered bags
or served as captains, built our food closet and purchased, delivered, and stocked all the food!
This ministry will continue and I encourage each of us to live out the example of our servant, Jesus.
Please continue to support the Backpack Ministry with your prayers, participation, and financial pledges as
we plan for the next school year. Thank you again.
Please call Lynn Clark 434-792-6514 or Suzanne Giffen 434-822-1727 to join a team for the fall.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
LOVE GOD, SHARE HOPE, SERVE ALL!
School’s out for summer! I’m so glad to be into summer time full swing. There
is so much fun to be had during the summer months. The next 10 weeks will have lots
of intentional fellowship times that I pray you will plan to be a part of.
JUMP will continue to run through the summer. We meet each Sunday night
from 6-8. I am excited that the kids are working on a series about emotions and feelings
using emojis. I plan for us to have fun while we learn a lot as well. This program is
continuing to be a blessing to me each week. We could use a few more adults to add to
our rotations for dinner and supervision. Let me know if you can help. JUMP will meet
June 3, 10 and 17.
I am thrilled that we will once again have our Wonderful Wednesday Program.
Planning is almost complete for the whole summer and we will have so much fun on our
adventures. If you would like a front row seat to watch our kids be the hands and feet of Jesus, plan to join us! We can
always use more hands and eyes to help! For the month of June we will meet June 6, 13, and 20.
Our other big outreach opportunity is Vacation Bible School. That will be the week of June 24-28th. If you
have not already registered your child, please do so as soon as possible. That makes it so much easier on our ladies
doing registration. It will also help us with our t-shirt order to make it as accurate as possible. Join us as we meet a
shipwrecked castaway who will share stories of Jesus and how he saved us. Dr. Nosa is also planning on being back
with us for the science experiments, we will have yummy snacks, lots of fun games, awesome worship music, and fun
crafts to round out each night. I am also working on some ideas for the last night……we’ll see what that looks like!
Thanks in advance to all who will serve this week. It takes so many hands to make this machine work smoothly. I am
thankful for each of you and your willingness to serve.
Keep watching for more info on other events and exciting happenings here at Fairview! We are already
working on planning for fall as well so if you have ideas I would love to hear them!
Blessings to each of you!
Kate
We would like to offer our most sincere thanks for

cards, and other kindnesses you shared with Anne
and with our family over the past few months.
Thank you so very much for your love, care, prayer,
and support during this most difficult of times.

#vaumc18 Hashtags, once your phone’s pound sign, now have a place on most popular social networks, including
Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, and Pinterest. The hashtag is likely the most popular means of
categorizing content on social media. It makes your own content discoverable and allows you to find
relevant content from other people and businesses. The hashtag also allows you to connect with and
engage other social media users based on a common theme or interest. So follow/engage in this year's
Virginia Annual Conference session on social media using #vaumc18 !
